An operator algebraic approach to symmetry defects and fractionalization

We provide a superselection theory of symmetry defects in 2+1D symmetry enriched topological (SET) order in the infinite volume setting. For a finite symmetry group $G$ with a unitary on-site action, our formalism produces a $G$-crossed braided tensor category $G\mathsf{Sec}$. This superselection theory is a direct generalization of the usual superselection theory of anyons, and thus is consistent with this standard analysis in the trivially graded component $G\mathsf{Sec}_1$. This framework also gives us a completely rigorous understanding of symmetry fractionalization. To demonstrate the utility of our formalism, we compute $G\mathsf{Sec}$ explicitly in both short-range and long-range entangled spin systems with symmetry and recover the relevant skeletal data.

An Operator-Algebraic Framework for Anyons and Defects in Quantum Spin Systems

In this dissertation, we detail an operator algebraic approach to studying topological order in the infinite volume setting. We give a thorough and self-contained review of the DHR-style approach on quantum spin systems, which builds a category $\mathrm{\textbf{DHR}}$ of anyon sectors starting from microscopic lattice spin systems. In general, this category has the structure of a braided $\mathrm{C}^*$-tensor category. We will verify in full detail that $\mathrm{\textbf{DHR}}$ is the expected category in Kitaev's Quantum Double model, a paradigmatic model for studying topological order on the lattice. We will then extend the DHR-style analysis to systems in the presence of a global on-site symmetry, and introduce a category of symmetry defects, $G\mathsf{Sec}$, and show that it has the structure of a $G$-crossed braided $\mathrm{C}^*$-tensor category.

The category of anyon sectors for non-abelian quantum double models

We study Kitaev's quantum double model for arbitrary finite gauge group in infinite volume, using an operator-algebraic approach. The quantum double model hosts anyonic excitations which can be identified with equivalence classes of `localized and transportable endomorphisms', which produce anyonic excitations from the ground state. Following the Doplicher--Haag--Roberts (DHR) sector theory from AQFT, we organize these endomorphisms into a braided monoidal category capturing the fusion and braiding properties of the anyons. We show that this category is equivalent to $\mathrm{Rep}_f \mathcal{D}(G)$, the representation category of the quantum double of $G$. This establishes for the first time the full DHR structure for a class of 2d quantum lattice models with non-abelian anyons.

Classification of the anyon sectors of Kitaev's quantum double model

We give a complete classification of the anyon sectors of Kitaev's quantum double model on the infinite triangular lattice and for finite gauge group $G$, including the non-abelian case. As conjectured, the anyon sectors of the model correspond precisely to equivalence classes of irreducible representations of the quantum double algebra of $G$.

Superselection sectors in the 3d Toric Code

We rigorously define superselection sectors in the 3d (spatial dimensions) Toric Code Model on the infinite lattice $\mathbb{Z}^3$. We begin by constructing automorphisms that correspond to infinite flux strings, a phenomenon that's only possible in open manifolds. We then classify all ground state superselection sectors containing infinite flux strings, and find a rich structure that depends on the geometry and number of strings in the configuration. In particular, for a single infinite flux string configuration to be a ground state, it must be monotonic. For configurations containing multiple infinite flux strings, we define "infinity directions" and use that to establish a necessary and sufficient condition for a state to be in a ground state superselection sector. Notably, we also find that if a state contains more than 3 infinite flux strings, then it is not in a ground state superselection sector.

Dynamical abelian anyons with bound states and scattering states

We introduce a family of quantum spin Hamiltonians on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ that can be regarded as perturbations of Kitaev's abelian quantum double models that preserve the gauge and duality symmetries of these models. We analyze in detail the sector with one electric charge and one magnetic flux and show that the spectrum in this sector consists of both bound states and scattering states of abelian anyons. Concretely, we have defined a family of lattice models in which abelian anyons arise naturally as finite-size quasi-particles with non-trivial dynamics that consist of a charge-flux pair. In particular, the anyons exhibit a non-trivial holonomy with a quantized phase, consistent with the gauge and duality symmetries of the Hamiltonian.
