Schur $Q$-functions and the Capelli eigenvalue problem for the Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak q(n)$

Let $\mathfrak l:= \mathfrak q(n)\times\mathfrak q(n)$, where $\mathfrak q(n)$ denotes the queer Lie superalgebra. The associative superalgebra $V$ of type $Q(n)$ has a left and right action of $\mathfrak q(n)$, and hence is equipped with a canonical $\mathfrak l$-module structure. We consider a distinguished basis $\{D_λ\}$ of the algebra of $\mathfrak l$-invariant super-polynomial differential operators on $V$, which is indexed by strict partitions of length at most $n$. We show that the spectrum of the operator $D_λ$, when it acts on the algebra $\mathscr P(V)$ of super-polynomials on $V$, is given by the factorial Schur $Q$-function of Okounkov and Ivanov. This constitutes a refinement and a new proof of a result of Nazarov, who computed the top-degree homogeneous part of the Harish-Chandra image of $D_λ$. As a further application, we show that the radial projections of the spherical super-polynomials corresponding to the diagonal symmetric pair $(\mathfrak l,\mathfrak m)$, where $\mathfrak m:=\mathfrak q(n)$, of irreducible $\mathfrak l$-submodules of $\mathscr P(V)$ are the classical Schur $Q$-functions.

Analytic continuation of equivariant distributions

We establish a method for constructing equivariant distributions on smooth real algebraic varieties from equivariant distributions on Zariski open subsets. This is based on Bernstein's theory of analytic continuation of holonomic distributions. We use this to construct $H$-equivariant functionals on principal series representations of $G$, where $G$ is a real reductive group and $H$ is an algebraic subgroup. We also deduce the existence of generalized Whittaker models for degenerate principal series representations. As a special case, this gives short proofs of existence of Whittaker models on principal series representations, and of analytic continuation of standard intertwining operators. Finally, we extend our constructions to the $p$-adic case using a recent result of Hong and Sun.

Double affine Hecke algebras and congruence groups

The most general construction of double affine Artin groups (DAAG) and Hecke algebras (DAHA) associates such objects to pairs of compatible reductive group data. We show that DAAG/DAHA always admit a faithful action by automorphisms of a finite index subgroup of the Artin group of type $A_{2}$, which descends to a faithful outer action of a congruence subgroup of $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ or $PSL(2,\mathbb{Z})$. This was previously known only in some special cases and, to the best of our knowledge, not even conjectured to hold in full generality. The structural intricacies of DAAG/DAHA are captured by the underlying semisimple data and, to a large extent, by adjoint data; we prove our main result by reduction to the adjoint case. Adjoint DAAG/DAHA correspond in a natural way to affine Lie algebras, or more precisely to their affinized Weyl groups, which are the semi-direct products $W\ltimes Q^{\vee}$ of the Weyl group $W$ with the coroot lattice $Q^{\vee}$. We now describe our results for the adjoint case in greater detail. We first give a new Coxeter-type presentation for adjoint DAAG as quotients of the Coxeter braid groups associated to certain crystallographic diagrams that we call double affine Coxeter diagrams. As a consequence we show that the rank two Artin groups of type $A_{2},B_{2},G_{2}$ act by automorphisms on the adjoint DAAG/DAHA associated to affine Lie algebras of twist $r=1,2,3$, respectively. This extends a fundamental result of Cherednik for $r=1$. We show further that the above rank two Artin group action descends to an outer action of congruence subgroup $Γ_{1}(r)$. In particular $Γ_{1}( r) $ acts naturally on the set of isomorphism classes of representations of an adjoint DAAG/DAHA of twist type $r$, giving rise to a projective representation of $Γ_{1}( r) $ on the space of a $Γ_{1}( r) $-stable representation.

Generalized and degenerate Whittaker models

We study generalized and degenerate Whittaker models for reductive groups over local fields of characteristic zero (archimedean or non-archimedean). Our main result is the construction of epimorphisms from the generalized Whittaker model corresponding to a nilpotent orbit to any degenerate Whittaker model corresponding to the same orbit, and to certain degenerate Whittaker models corresponding to bigger orbits. We also give choice-free definitions of generalized and degenerate Whittaker models. Finally, we explain how our methods imply analogous results for Whittaker-Fourier coefficients of automorphic representations. For $\mathrm{GL}_n(F)$ this implies that a smooth admissible representation $π$ has a generalized Whittaker model $\mathcal{W}_{\mathcal{O}}(π)$ corresponding to a nilpotent coadjoint orbit $\mathcal{O}$ if and only if $\mathcal{O}$ lies in the (closure of) the wave-front set $\mathrm{WF}(π)$. Previously this was only known to hold for $F$ non-archimedean and $\mathcal{O}$ maximal in $\mathrm{WF}(π)$, see [MW87]. We also express $\mathcal{W}_{\mathcal{O}}(π)$ as an iteration of a version of the Bernstein-Zelevinsky derivatives [BZ77,AGS15a]. This enables us to extend to $\mathrm{GL_n}(\mathbb{R})$ and $\mathrm{GL_n}(\mathbb{C})$ several further results from [MW87] on the dimension of $\mathcal{W}_{\mathcal{O}}(π)$ and on the exactness of the generalized Whittaker functor.

The Capelli problem for $\mathfrak{gl}(m|n)$ and the spectrum of invariant differential operators

The "Capelli problem" for the symmetric pairs $(\mathfrak{gl}\times \mathfrak{gl},\mathfrak{gl})$ $(\mathfrak{gl},\mathfrak{o})$, and $(\mathfrak{gl},\mathfrak{sp})$ is closely related to the theory of Jack polynomials and shifted Jack polynomials for special values of the parameter. In this paper, we extend this connection to the Lie superalgebra setting, namely to the supersymmetric pairs $(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{g}):=(\mathfrak{gl}(m|2n),\mathfrak{osp}(m|2n))$ and $(\mathfrak{gl}(m|n)\times\mathfrak{gl}(m|n),\mathfrak{gl}(m|n))$, acting on $W:=S^2(\mathbb C^{m|2n})$ and $\mathbb C^{m|n}\otimes(\mathbb C^{m|n})^*$. We also give an affirmative answer to the abstract Capelli problem for these cases.

Positivity of Shimura operators

In [16] G. Shimura introduced a family of invariant differential operators that play a key role in the study of nearly holomorphic automorphic forms, and he asked for a determination of their \textquotedblleft domain of positivity\textquotedblright. In this paper we relate the eigenvalues of Shimura operators to certain polynomials introduced by A. Okounkov, which leads to an explicit answer to Shimura's questions.

Money as Minimal Complexity

We consider mechanisms that provide traders the opportunity to exchange commodity $i$ for commodity $j$, for certain ordered pairs $ij$. Given any connected graph $G$ of opportunities, we show that there is a unique mechanism $M_{G}$ that satisfies some natural conditions of "fairness" and "convenience". Let $\mathfrak{M}(m)$ denote the class of mechanisms $M_{G}$ obtained by varying $G$ on the commodity set $\left\{1,\ldots,m\right\} $. We define the complexity of a mechanism $M$ in $\mathfrak{M(m)}$ to be a certain pair of integers $τ(M),π(M)$ which represent the time required to exchange $i$ for $j$ and the information needed to determine the exchange ratio (each in the worst case scenario, across all $i\neq j$). This induces a quasiorder $\preceq$ on $\mathfrak{M}(m)$ by the rule \[ M\preceq M^{\prime}\text{if}τ(M)\leqτ(M^{\prime})\text{and}π(M)\leqπ(M^{\prime}). \] We show that, for $m>3$, there are precisely three $\preceq$-minimal mechanisms $M_{G}$ in $\mathfrak{M}(m)$, where $G$ corresponds to the star, cycle and complete graphs. The star mechanism has a distinguished commodity -- the money -- that serves as the sole medium of exchange and mediates trade between decentralized markets for the other commodities. Our main result is that, for any weights $λ,μ>0,$ the star mechanism is the unique minimizer of $λτ(M)+μπ(M)$ on $\mathfrak{M}(m)$ for large enough $m$.

Graphical Exchange Mechanisms

Consider an exchange mechanism which accepts diversified offers of various commodities and redistributes everything it receives. We impose certain conditions of fairness and convenience on such a mechanism and show that it admits unique prices, which equalize the value of offers and returns for each individual. We next define the complexity of a mechanism in terms of certain integers $τ_{ij},π_{ij}$ and $k_{i}$ that represent the time required to exchange $i$ for $j$, the difficulty in determining the exchange ratio, and the dimension of the message space. We show that there are a finite number of minimally complex mechanisms, in each of which all trade is conducted through markets for commodity pairs. Finally we consider minimal mechanisms with smallest worst-case complexities $τ=\maxτ_{ij}$ and $π=\maxπ_{ij}$. For $m>3$ commodities, there are precisely three such mechanisms, one of which has a distinguished commodity -- the money -- that serves as the sole medium of exchange. As $m\rightarrow \infty$ the money mechanism is the only one with bounded $\left( π,τ\right) $.

The Capelli identity and Radon transform for Grassmannians

We study a family $C_{s,l}$ of Capelli-type invariant differential operators on the space of rectangular matrices over a real division algebra. The $C_{s,l}$ descend to invariant differential operators on the corresponding Grassmannian, which is a compact symmetric space, and we determine the image of the $C_{s,l}$ under the Harish-Chandra homomorphism. We also obtain analogous results for corresponding operators on the non-compact duals of the Grassmannians, and for line bundles. As an application we obtain a Radon inversion formula, which generalizes a recent result of B. Rubin for real Grassmannians.

Invariant Functionals on the Speh representation

We study Sp(2n,R)-invariant functionals on the spaces of smooth vectors in Speh representations of GL(2n,R). For even n we give expressions for such invariant functionals using an explicit realization of the space of smooth vectors in the Speh representations. Furthermore, we show that the functional we construct is, up to a constant, the unique functional on the Speh representation which is invariant under the Siegel parabolic subgroup of Sp(2n,R). For odd n we show that the Speh representations do not admit an invariant functional with respect to the subgroup U(n) of Sp(2n,R) consisting of unitary matrices. Our construction, combined with the argument in [GOSS12], gives a purely local and explicit construction of Klyachko models for all unitary representations of GL(2n,R).

On an analytic description of the $α$-cosine transform on real Grassmannians

The goal of this paper is to describe the $α$-cosine transform on functions on a Grassmannian of $i$-planes in an $n$-dimensional real vector space. in analytic terms as explicitly as possible. We show that for all but finitely many complex $α$ the $α$-cosine transform is a composition of the $(α+2)$-cosine transform with an explicitly written (though complicated) O(n)-invariant differential operator. For all exceptional values of $α$ except one we interpret the $α$-cosine transform explicitly as either the Radon transform or composition of two Radon transforms. Explicit interpretation of the transform corresponding to the last remaining value $α$, which is $-(min\{i,n-i\}+1)$, is still an open problem.

Degenerate Whittaker functionals for real reductive groups

In this paper we establish a connection between the associated variety of a representation and the existence of certain degenerate Whittaker functionals, for both smooth and K-finite vectors, for all quasi-split real reductive groups, thereby generalizing results of Kostant, Matumoto and others.

Twisted homology for the mirabolic nilradical

The notion of derivatives for smooth representations of $GL(n,\mathbb{Q}_p)$ was defined in [BZ77]. In the archimedean case, an analog of the highest derivative was defined for irreducible unitary representations in [Sah89] and called the "adduced" representation. In [AGS] derivatives of all orders were defined for smooth admissible Frechet representations (of moderate growth). A key ingredient of this definition is the functor of twisted coinvariants with respect to the nilradical of the mirabolic subgroup. In this paper we prove exactness of this functor and compute it on a certain class of representations. This implies exactness of the highest derivative functor, and allows to compute highest derivatives of all monomial representations. In [AGS] these results are applied to finish the computation of adduced representations for all irreducible unitary representations and to prove uniqueness of degenerate Whittaker models for unitary representations.

Derivatives for smooth representations of GL(n,R) and GL(n,C)

The notion of derivatives for smooth representations of GL(n) in the p-adic case was defined by J. Bernstein and A. Zelevinsky. In the archimedean case, an analog of the highest derivative was defined for irreducible unitary representations by S. Sahi and called the "adduced" representation. In this paper we define derivatives of all order for smooth admissible Frechet representations (of moderate growth). The archimedean case is more problematic than the p-adic case; for example arbitrary derivatives need not be admissible. However, the highest derivative continues being admissible, and for irreducible unitarizable representations coincides with the space of smooth vectors of the adduced representation. In [AGS] we prove exactness of the highest derivative functor, and compute highest derivatives of all monomial representations. We prove exactness of the highest derivative functor, and compute highest derivatives of all monomial representations. We apply those results to finish the computation of adduced representations for all irreducible unitary representations and to prove uniqueness of degenerate Whittaker models for unitary representations, thus completing the results of [Sah89, Sah90, SaSt90, GS12].

Harmonic vectors and matrix tree theorems

The paper describes an explicit combinatorial formula for a harmonic vector for the Laplacian of a directed graph with arbitrary edge weights. This result was motivated by questions from mathematical economics, and the formula plays a crucial role in forthcoming joint work of the author on the emergence of prices and money in an exchange economy. It turns out that the formula is closely related to well-studied problems in graph theory, in particular to the so-called matrix tree theorem due to W. Tutte and independently to R. Bott and J. Mayberry. As a further application of our considerations, we obtain a short new proof of both the matrix tree theorem as well as its generalization due to S. Chaiken.

Intertwining operators between line bundles on Grassmannians

Let G=GL(n,F) where F is a local field of arbitrary characteristic, and let $π_1,π_2$ be representations induced from characters of two maximal parabolic subgroups $P_1,P_2$. We explicitly determine the space $Hom_G(π_1,π_2)$ of intertwining operators and prove that it has dimension at most 1 in all cases.

Annihilator varieties, highest derivatives, Whittaker functionals, and rank for unitary representations of GL(n,R)

In this paper we study irreducible unitary representations of GL(n,R) and prove a number of results. Our first result establishes a precise connection between the annihilator of a representation and the existence of degenerate Whittaker functionals, for both smooth and K-finite vectors, thereby generalizing results of Kostant, Matumoto and others. Our second result relates the annihilator to the sequence of highest derivatives, as defined in this setting by one of the authors. Based on those results, we suggest a new notion of rank of a smooth admissible representation of GL(n,R), which for unitarizable representations refines Howe's notion of rank. Our third result computes the highest derivatives for (almost) all unitary representations in terms of the Vogan classification. We also indicate briefly the analogous results over complex and p-adic fields.

Fourier coefficients of automorphic forms, character variety orbits, and small representations

We consider the Fourier expansions of automorphic forms on general Lie groups, with a particular emphasis on exceptional groups. After describing some principles underlying known results on GL(n), Sp(4), and G_2, we perform an analysis of the expansions on split real forms of E_6 and E_7 where simplifications take place for automorphic realizations of real representations which have small Gelfand-Kirillov dimension. Though the character varieties are more complicated for exceptional groups, we explain how the nonvanishing Fourier coefficients for small representations behave analogously to Fourier coefficients on GL(n). We use this mechanism, for example, to show that the minimal representation of either E_6 or E_7 never occurs in the cuspidal automorphic spectrum. We also give a complete description of the internal Chevalley modules of all complex Chevalley groups -- that is, the orbit decomposition of the Levi factor of a maximal parabolic on its unipotent radical. This generalizes classical results on trivectors and in particular includes a full description of the complex character variety orbits for all maximal parabolics. The results of this paper have been applied in the string theory literature to the study of BPS instanton contributions to graviton scattering [arXiv:1111.2983].
