Variant of Ramanujan polynomials and a conjecture of Maji & Sarkar

We settle a conjecture proposed by B. Maji and T. Sarkar regarding the location of zeros of a two-parameter family of reciprocal polynomials, $R_{k,\ell}(z)$ for positive integers $k$ and $\ell$. These polynomials are generalizations of Ramanujan polynomials studied by M. R. Murty, C. Smyth, and R. Wang. More specifically, we show that except for two real zeros, all other zeros of $R_{k,\ell}(z)$ lie on the unit circle.

Selmer stability for elliptic curves in Galois $\ell$-extensions

We study the behavior of Selmer groups of an elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{Q}$ in finite Galois extensions with prescribed Galois group. Fix a prime $\ell \geq 5$, a finite group $G$ with $\#G = \ell^n$, and an elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{Q}$ with $Sel_\ell(E/\mathbb{Q}) = 0$ and surjective mod-$\ell$ Galois representation. We show that there exist infinitely many Galois extensions $F/\mathbb{Q}$ with Galois group $Gal(F/\mathbb{Q}) \simeq G$ for which the $\ell$-Selmer group $Sel_\ell(E/F)$ also vanishes. We obtain an asymptotic lower bound for the number $M(G, E; X)$ of such fields $F$ with absolute discriminant $|\Delta_F|\leq X$, proving that there is an explicit constant $\delta>0$ such that $M(G, E; X) \gg X^{\frac{1}{\ell^{n-1}(\ell - 1)}} (\log X)^{\delta - 1}$. The asymptotic for $M(G, E; X)$ matches the conjectural count for all $G$-extensions $F/\mathbb{Q}$ for which $|\Delta_F|\leq X$, up to a power of $\log X$. This demonstrates that Selmer stability is not a rare phenomenon.

A note on transcendence of special values of functions related to modularity

In this note, we study the arithmetic nature of values of modular functions, meromorphic modular forms and meromorphic quasi-modular forms with respect to arbitrary congruence subgroups, that have algebraic Fourier coefficients. This approach unifies many of the known results, and leads to generalizations of the theorems of Schneider, Nesterenko and others.

Rank stability of elliptic curves in certain non-abelian extensions

Let $E_{/\mathbb{Q}}$ be an elliptic curve with rank $E(\mathbb{Q})=0$. Fix an odd prime $p$, a positive integer $n$ and a finite abelian extension $K/\mathbb{Q}$ with rank $E(K) = 0$. In this paper, we show that there exist infinitely many extensions $L/K$ such that $L/\mathbb{Q}$ is Galois with $\operatorname{Gal}(L/\mathbb{Q}) \simeq \operatorname{Gal}(K/\mathbb{Q}) \ltimes \mathbb{Z}/p^n\mathbb{Z}$, and rank $E(L)=0$. This is an extension of earlier results on rank stability of elliptic curves in cyclic extensions of prime power order to a non-abelian setting. We also obtain an asymptotic lower bound for the number of such extensions, ordered by their absolute discriminant.

Distribution and Non-vanishing of special values of $L$-series attached to Erd\H{o}s functions

In a written correspondence with A. Livingston, Erd\H{o}s conjectured that for any arithmetical function $f$, periodic with period $q$, taking values in $\{-1,1\}$ when $q \nmid n$ and $f(n)=0$ when $q \mid n$, the series $\sum_{n=1}^{\infty} f(n)/n$ does not vanish. This conjecture is still open in the case $q \equiv 1 \bmod 4$ or when $2 \phi(q)+ 1 \leq q$. In this paper, we obtain the characteristic function of the limiting distribution of $L(k,f)$ for any positive integer $k$ and Erd\H{o}s function $f$ with the same parity as $k$. Moreover, we show that the Erd\H{o}s conjecture is true with "probability" one.

Special values of derivatives of $L$-series and generalized Stieltjes constants

The connection between derivatives of $L(s,f)$ for periodic arithmetical functions $f$ at $s=1$ and generalized Stieltjes constants has been noted earlier. In this paper, we utilize this link to throw light on the arithmetic nature of $L'(1,f)$ and certain Stieltjes constants. In particular, if $p$ is an odd prime greater than $7$, then we deduce the transcendence of at least $(p-7)/2$ of the generalized Stieltjes constants, $\{ \gamma_1(a,p) : 1 \leq a < p \}$, conditional on a conjecture of S. Gun, M. R. Murty and P. Rath.

A vanishing criterion for Dirichlet series with periodic coefficients

We address the question of non-vanishing of $L(1,f)$ where $f$ is an algebraic-valued, periodic arithmetical function. We do this by characterizing algebraic-valued, periodic functions $f$ for which $L(1,f)=0$. The case of odd functions was resolved by Baker, Birch and Wirsing in 1973. We apply a result of Bass to obtain a characterization for the even functions. We also describe a theorem of the first two authors which says that it is enough to consider only the even and the odd functions in order to obtain a complete characterization.

On a conjecture of Livingston

In an attempt to resolve a folklore conjecture of Erd\H{o}s regarding the non-vanishing at $s=1$ of the $L$-series attached to a periodic arithmetical function with period $q$ and values in $\{-1, 1 \}$, Livingston conjectured the $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$ - linear independence of logarithms of certain algebraic numbers. In this paper, we disprove Livingston's conjecture for composite $q \geq 4$, highlighting that a new approach is required to settles Erd\H{o}s's conjecture. We also prove that the conjecture is true for prime $q \geq 3$, and indicate that more ingredients are needed to settle Erd\H{o}s's conjecture for prime $q$.
