Complete hierarchical structure of the spectral bands in the Kohmoto model

We study the Kohmoto model, a family of discrete Schr\"odinger operators with Sturmian potentials depending on a frequency and a coupling constant. We prove that, for all non-vanishing coupling constants, all spectral bands admit a hierarchical structure. This structure offers a variety of applications, including a detailed description of the Kohmoto butterfly and a central step towards the resolution of the dry ten Martini problem for Sturmian Hamiltonians, which we carry out in a subsequent work.

The butterflies' effects

This work studies spectral properties of Schr\"odinger operators in the context of aperiodic order, using weighted Delone sets to explore the interplay between the underlying dynamics and spectral properties. We study parameter-dependent families interpolating between periodic and aperiodic regimes, whose spectra form so-called spectral butterflies. These reflect fractal and self-similar structures of the spectra. We review existing results, introduce additional examples, and establish new connections between works in the literature. The framework is largely dimension-independent and extends to non-Abelian groups and more general settings.

Spectral pollution in substitution systems

We study spectral properties of Schr\"odinger operators associated with substitution dynamical systems in higher dimensions. Focusing on periodic approximations generated by iterating substitutions on initial configurations, we analyze how structural defects influence the limiting spectral behavior. In contrast to the one-dimensional setting, we show that such approximations may exhibit significant spectral pollution, including changes in the essential spectrum and the Lebesgue measure.

From Quasiperiodicity to a Complete Coloring of the Kohmoto Butterfly

The spectra of the Kohmoto model give rise to a fractal phase diagram, known as the Kohmoto butterfly. The butterfly encapsulates the spectra of all periodic Kohmoto Hamiltonians, whose index invariants are sought after. Topological methods - such as Chern numbers - are ill defined due to the discontinuous potential, and hence fail to provide index invariants. This Letter overcomes that obstacle and provides a complete classification of the Kohmoto model indices. Our approach encodes the Kohmoto butterfly as a spectral tree graph, reflecting the quasiperiodic nature via the periodic spectra. This yields a complete coloring of the phase diagram and a new perspective on other spectral butterflies.

Spectral regularity and defects for the Kohmoto model

We study the Kohmoto model including Sturmian Hamiltonians and the associated Kohmoto butterfly. We prove spectral estimates for the operators using Farey numbers. In addition, we determine the impurities at rational rotations leading to the spectral defects in the Kohmoto butterfly. Our results are similar to the ones obtained for the Almost-Mathieu operator and the associated Hofstadter butterfly.

A review of a work by Raymond: Sturmian Hamiltonians with a large coupling constant -- periodic approximations and gap labels

We present a review of the work L. Raymond from 1995. The review aims at making this work more accessible and offers adaptations of some statements and proofs. In addition, this review forms an applicable framework for the complete solution of the Dry Ten Martini Problem for Sturmian Hamiltonians as appears in the work arXiv:2402.16703 by R. Band, S. Beckus and R. Loewy. A Sturmian Hamiltonian is a one-dimensional Schr\"odinger operator whose potential is a Sturmian sequence multiplied by a coupling constant, $V\in\mathbb{R}$. The spectrum of such an operator is commonly approximated by the spectra of designated periodic operators. If $V>4$, then the spectral bands of the periodic operators exhibit a particular combinatorial structure. This structure provides a formula for the integrated density of states. Employing this, it is shown that if $V>4$, then all the gaps, as predicted by the gap labelling theorem, are there.

Spectral approximation for substitution systems

We study periodic approximations of aperiodic Schr\"odinger operators on lattices in Lie groups with dilation structure. The potentials arise through symbolic substitution systems that have been recently introduced in this setting. We characterize convergence of spectra of associated Schr\"odinger operators in the Hausdorff distance via properties of finite graphs. As a consequence, new examples of periodic approximations are obtained. We further prove that there are substitution systems that do not admit periodic approximations in higher dimensions, in contrast to the one-dimensional case. On the other hand, if the spectra converge, then we show that the rate of convergence is necessarily exponentially fast. These results are new even for substitutions over $\mathbb{Z}^d$.

The Dry Ten Martini Problem for Sturmian Hamiltonians

The dry ten Martini problem for Sturmian Hamiltonians is solved. Concretely, we prove that all the predicted spectral gaps "are there" for all the Schr\"odinger operators with Sturmian potentials and non-vanishing coupling constant. A key approach towards the solution is a representation of the spectrum as the boundary of an infinite tree. This tree is constructed using periodic approximations and encodes substantial spectral characteristics.

MFO Report: The dry ten Martini problem for Sturmian dynamical systems

This extended Oberwolfach report (to appear in the proceedings of the MFO Workshop 2335: Aspects of Aperiodic Order) announces the full solution to the Dry Ten Martini Problem for Sturmian Hamiltonians. Specifically, we show that all spectral gaps of Sturmian Hamiltonians (as predicted by the gap labeling theorem) are open for all nonzero couplings and all irrational rotations. We present here the proof strategy.

Spectral estimates of dynamically-defined and amenable operator families

We consider kernel operators defined by a dynamical system. The Hausdorff distance of spectra is estimated by the Hausdorff distance of subsystems. We prove that the spectrum map is $ \frac{1}{2} $-H\"older continuous provided the group action and kernel are Lipschitz continuous and the group has strict polynomial growth. Also, we prove that the continuity can be improved resulting in the spectrum map being Lipschitz continuous provided the kernel is instead locally-constant. This complements a 1990 result by J.~Avron; P.H.M.v.~Mouche; B.~Simon establishing that one-dimensional discrete quasiperiodic Schr\"odinger operators with Lipschitz continuous potentials, e.g., the Almost Mathieu Operator, exhibit spectral $ \frac{1}{2} $-H\"older continuity. Also, this complements a 2019 result by S.~Beckus; J.~Bellissard; H.~Cornean establishing that $ d $-dimensional discrete subshift Schr\"odinger operators with locally-constant potentials, e.g., the Fibonacci Hamiltonian, exhibit spectral Lipschitz continuity. Our work exposes the connection between the past two results, and the group, e.g., the Heisenberg group, needs not be the integer lattice nor abelian.

Symbolic substitution systems beyond abelian groups

In this article we construct the first examples of strongly aperiodic linearly repetitive Delone sets in non-abelian Lie groups by means of symbolic substitutions. In particular, we find such sets in all $2$-step nilpotent Lie groups with rational structure constants such as the Heisenberg group. More generally, we consider the class of $1$-connected nilpotent Lie groups whose Lie algebras admit a rational form and a derivation with positive eigenvalues. Any group in this class admits a lattice which is invariant under a natural family of dilations, and this allows us to construct primitive non-periodic symbolic substitutions. We show that, as in the abelian case, the associated subshift (and hence the induced Delone dynamical system) is minimal, uniquely ergodic and weakly aperiodic and consists of linearly repetitive configurations. In the $2$-step nilpotent case, it is even strongly aperiodic.

Growth of Eigenfunctions and R-limits on Graphs

A characterization of the essential spectrum $\sigma_{\text ess}$ of Schr\"odinger operators on infinite graphs is derived involving the concept of $\mathcal{R}$-limits. This concept, which was introduced previously for operators on $\mathbb{N}$ and $\mathbb{Z}^d$ as "right-limits", captures the behaviour of the operator at infinity. For graphs with sub-exponential growth rate we show that each point in $\sigma_{\text ess}(H)$ corresponds to a bounded generalized eigenfunction of a corresponding $\mathcal{R}$-limit of $H$. If, additionally, the graph is of uniform sub-exponential growth, also the converse inclusion holds.

Linear repetitivity beyond abelian groups

We show that linearly repetitive weighted Delone sets in groups of polynomial growth have a uniquely ergodic hull. This result applies in particular to the linearly repetitive weighted Delone sets in homogeneous Lie groups constructed in the companion paper arXiv:2109.15210 using symbolic substitution methods. More generally, using the quasi-tiling method of Ornstein-Weiss, we establish unique ergodicity of hulls of weighted Delone sets in amenable unimodular lcsc groups under a new repetitivity condition which we call tempered repetitivity. For this purpose, we establish a general sub-additive convergence theorem, which also has applications concerning the existence of Banach densities and uniform approximation of the spectral distribution function of finite hopping range operators on Cayley graphs.

Generalized eigenfunctions and eigenvalues: a unifying framework for Shnol-type theorems

Let $H$ be a generalized Schr\"odinger operator on a domain of a non-compact connected Riemannian manifold, and a generalized eigenfunction $u$ for $H$: that is, $u$ satisfies the equation $Hu=\lambda u$ in the weak sense but is not necessarily in $L^2$. The problem is to find conditions on the growth of $u$, so that $\lambda$ belongs to the spectrum of $H$. We unify and generalize known results on this problem. In addition, a variety of examples is provided, illustrating the different nature of the growth conditions.

H\"older Continuity of the Spectra for Aperiodic Hamiltonians

We study the spectral location of strongly pattern equivariant Hamiltonians arising through configurations on a colored lattice. Roughly speaking, two configurations are "close to each other" if, up to a translation, they "almost coincide" on a large fixed ball. The larger this ball is, the more similar they are, and this induces a metric on the space of the corresponding dynamical systems. Our main result states that the map which sends a given configuration into the spectrum of its associated Hamiltonian, is H\"older (even Lipschitz) continuous in the usual Hausdorff metric. Specifically, the spectral distance of two Hamiltonians is estimated by the distance of the corresponding dynamical systems.

Spectral Continuity for Aperiodic Quantum Systems II. Periodic Approximations in 1D

The existence and construction of periodic approximations with convergent spectra is crucial in solid state physics for the spectral study of corresponding Schr\"odinger operators. In a forthcoming work [9] (arXiv:1709.00975) this task was boiled down to the existence and construction of periodic approximations of the underlying dynamical systems in the Hausdorff topology. As a result the one-dimensional systems admitting such approximations are completely classified in the present work. In addition explicit constructions are provided for dynamical systems defined by primitive substitutions covering all studied examples such as the Fibonacci sequence or the Golay-Rudin-Shapiro sequence. One main tool is the description of the Hausdorff topology by the local pattern topology on the dictionaries as well as the GAP-graphs describing the local structure. The connection of branching vertices in the GAP-graphs and defects is discussed.

Delone dynamical systems and spectral convergence

In the realm of Delone sets in locally compact, second countable, Hausdorff groups, we develop a dynamical systems approach in order to study the continuity behavior of measured quantities arising from point sets. A special focus is both on the autocorrelation, as well as on the density of states for random bounded operators. It is shown that for uniquely ergodic limit systems, the latter measures behave continuously with respect to the Chabauty-Fell convergence of hulls. In the special situation of Euclidean spaces, our results complement recent developments in describing spectra as topological limits: we show that the measured quantities under consideration can be approximated via periodic analogs.

Spectral Continuity for Aperiodic Quantum Systems I. General Theory

How does the spectrum of a Schr\"odinger operator vary if the corresponding geometry and dynamics change? Is it possible to define approximations of the spectrum of such operators by defining approximations of the underlying structures? In this work a positive answer is provided using the rather general setting of groupoid $C^\ast$-algebras. A characterization of the convergence of the spectra by the convergence of the underlying structures is proved. In order to do so, the concept of continuous field of groupoids is slightly extended by adding continuous fields of cocycles. With this at hand, magnetic Schr\"odinger operators on dynamical systems or Delone systems fall into this unified setting. Various approximations used in computational physics, like the periodic or the finite cluster approximations, are expressed through the tautological groupoid, which provides a universal model for fields of groupoids. The use of the Hausdorff topology turns out to be fundamental in understanding why and how these approximations work. Corrigendum: A correct statement of Theorem 4 is provided. The change does not affect the main results.
