Maximality of dual coactions on sectional C*-algebras of Fell bundles and applications

In this paper we give a simple proof of the maximality of dual coactions on full cross-sectional C*-algebras of Fell bundles over locally compact groups. As applications we extend certain exotic crossed-product functors in the sense of Baum, Guentner and Willett to the category of Fell bundles and the category of partial actions and we obtain results about the K-theory of (exotic) cross-sectional algebras of Fell-bundles over K-amenable groups. As a bonus, we give a characterisation of maximal coactions of discrete groups in terms of maximal tensor products.

Exotic crossed products and the Baum-Connes conjecture

We study general properties of exotic crossed-product functors and characterise those which extend to functors on equivariant C*-algebra categories based on correspondences. We show that every such functor allows the construction of a descent in KK-theory and we use this to show that all crossed products by correspondence functors of K-amenable groups are KK-equivalent. We also show that for second countable groups the minimal exact Morita compatible crossed-product functor used in the new formulation of the Baum-Connes conjecture by Baum, Guentner and Willett extends to correspondences when restricted to separable G-C*-algebras. It therefore allows a descent in KK-theory for separable systems.

Rieffel proper actions

In the late 1980's Marc Rieffel introduced a notion of properness for actions of locally compact groups on C*-algebras which, among other things, allows the construction of generalised fixed-point algebras for such actions. In this paper we give a simple characterisation of Rieffel proper actions and use this to obtain several (counter) examples for the theory. In particular, we provide examples of Rieffel proper actions $α:G\to\mathrm{Aut}(A)$ for which properness is not induced by a nondegenerate equivariant *-homomorphism $ϕ:C_0(X)\to \mathcal{M}(A)$ for any proper $G$-space $X$. Other examples, based on earlier work of Meyer, show that a given action might carry different structures for Rieffel properness with different generalised fixed-point algebras.

Universal and exotic generalized fixed-point algebras for weakly proper actions and duality

Given a C*-dynamical system (A,G,α), we say that A is a weakly proper (X\rtimes G)-algebra if there exists a proper G-space X together with a nondegenerate G-equivariant *-homomorphism ϕ:C_0(X)->M(A). Weakly proper G-algebras form a large subclass of the class of proper G-algebras in the sense of Rieffel. In this paper we show that weakly proper (X\rtimes G)-algebras allow the construction of full fixed-point algebras A^G corresponding to the full crossed product A\rtimes_αG, thus solving, in this setting, a problem stated by Rieffel in his 1988's original article on proper actions. As an application we obtain a general Landstad duality result for arbitrary coactions together with a new and functorial construction of maximalizations of coactions. The same methods also allow the construction of exotic generalized fixed-point algebras associated to crossed-product norms lying between the reduced and universal ones. Using these, we give complete answers to some questions on duality theory for exotic crossed products recently raised by Kaliszewski, Landstad and Quigg.

Weakly proper group actions, Mansfield's imprimitivity and twisted Landstad duality

Using the theory of weakly proper actions of locally compact groups recently developed by the authors, we give a unified proof of both reduced and maximal versions of Mansfield's Imprimitivity Theorem and obtain a general version of Landstad's Duality Theorem for twisted group coactions. As one application, we obtain the stabilization trick for arbitrary twisted coactions, showing that every twisted coaction is Morita equivalent to an inflated coaction.

Imprimitivity theorems for weakly proper actions of locally compact groups

In a recent paper the authors introduced universal and exotic generalized fixed-point algebras for weakly proper group actions on C*-algebras. Here we extend the notion of weakly proper actions to actions on Hilbert modules. As a result we obtain several imprimitivity theorems establishing important Morita equivalences between universal, reduced, or exotic crossed products and appropriate universal, reduced, or exotic fixed-point algebras, respectively. In particular, we obtain an exotic version of Green's imprimitivity theorem and a very general version of the symmetric imprimitivity theorem by weakly proper actions of product groups GxH. In addition, we study functorial properties of generalized fixed-point algebras for equivariant categories of C*-algebras based on correspondences.

On the K-theory of the C*-algebra generated by the left regular representation of an Ore semigroup

We compute the K-theory of C*-algebras generated by the left regular representation of left Ore semigroups satisfying certain regularity conditions. Our result describes the K-theory of these semigroup C*-algebras in terms of the K-theory for the reduced group C*-algebras of certain groups which are typically easier to handle. Then we apply our result to specific semigroups from algebraic number theory.

Structure of crossed products by strictly proper actions on continuous-trace algebras

We examine the ideal structure of crossed products B\rtimes G where B is a continuous-trace C*-algebra and the induced action of G on the spectrum of B is proper. In particular, we are able to obtain a concrete description of the topology on the spectrum of the crossed product in the cases where either G is discrete or G is a Lie group acting smoothly on the spectrum of B.

On the K-theory of crossed products by automorphic semigroup actions

Let P be a semigroup that admits an embedding into a group G. Assume that the embedding satisfies a certain Toeplitz condition and that the Baum-Connes conjecture holds for G. We prove a formula describing the K- theory of the reduced crossed product A \rtimesα,r P by any automorphic action of P. This formula is obtained as a consequence of a result on the K-theory of crossed products for special actions of G on totally disconnected spaces. We apply our result to various examples including left Ore semigroups and quasi-lattice ordered semigroups. We also use the results to show that for certain semigroups P, including the ax + b-semigroup for a Dedekind domain R, the K-theory of the left and right regular semigroup C*-algebras of P coincide, although the structure of these algebras can be very different.

Structure and K-theory of crossed products by proper actions

We study the C*-algebra crossed product $C_0(X)\rtimes G$ of a locally compact group $G$ acting properly on a locally compact Hausdorff space $X$. Under some mild extra conditions, which are automatic if $G$ is discrete or a Lie group, we describe in detail, and in terms of the action, the primitive ideal space of such crossed products as a topological space, in particular with respect to its fibring over the quotient space $G\backslash X$. We also give some results on the $\K$-theory of such C*-algebras. These more or less compute the $\K$-theory in the case of isolated orbits with non-trivial (finite) stabilizers. We also give a purely $\K$-theoretic proof of a result due to Paul Baum and Alain Connes on (\K)-theory with complex coefficients of crossed products by finite groups.

Equivariant K-theory of finite dimensional real vector spaces

We give a general formula for the equivariant complex $K$-theory $K_G^*(V)$ of a finite dimensional real linear space $V$ equipped with a linear action of a compact group $G$ in terms of the representation theory of a certain double cover of $G$. Using this general formula, we give explicit computations in various interesting special cases. In particular, as an application we obtain explicit formulas for the $K$-theory of $C_r^*(GL(n,\RR))$, the reduced group C*-algebra of $GL(n,\RR)$.

Fibrations with noncommutative fibers

We study an analogue of fibrations of topological spaces with the homotopy lifting property in the setting of C*-algebra bundles. We then derive an analogue of the Leray-Serre spectral sequence to compute the K-theory of the fibration in terms of the cohomology of the base and the K-theory of the fibres. We present many examples which show that fibrations with noncommutative fibres appear in abundance in nature.

Principal noncommutative torus bundles

In this paper we study continuous bundles of C*-algebras which are non-commutative analogues of principal torus bundles. We show that all such bundles, although in general being very far away from being locally trivial bundles, are at least locally trivial with respect to a suitable bundle version of bivariant K-theory (denoted RKK-theory) due to Kasparov. Using earlier results of Echterhoff and Williams, we shall give a complete classification of principal non-commutative torus bundles up to equivariant Morita equivalence. We then study these bundles as topological fibrations (forgetting the group action) and give necessary and sufficient conditions for any non-commutative principal torus bundle being RKK-equivalent to a commutative one. As an application of our methods we shall also give a K-theoretic characterization of those principal torus-bundles with H-flux, as studied by Mathai and Rosenberg which possess "classical" T-duals.

A Lefschetz fixed-point formula for certain orbifold C*-algebras

Using Poincaré duality in K-theory, we state and prove a Lefschetz fixed point formula for endomorphisms of cross product C*-algebras $C_0(X)\cross G$ coming from covariant pairs. Here $G$ is assumed countable, $X$ a manifold, and $X\cross G$ cocompact and proper. The formula in question expresses the graded trace of the map on rationalized K-theory of $C_0(X)\cross G$ induced by the endomorphism, \emph{i.e.} the Lefschetz number, in terms of fixed orbits and representation-theoretic data connected with certain isotropy subgroups of the isotropy group at that point. The technique is to use noncommutative Poincaé duality and the formal Lefschetz lemma of the second author.

KK-theoretic duality for proper twisted actions

Let the discrete group G act properly and isometrically on the Riemannian manifold X. Let C_0(X, δ) be the section algebra of a smooth locally trivial G-equivariant bundle of elementary C*-algebras representing an element δof the Brauer group Br_G(X). Then C_0(X,δ^{-1}) x G is KK-theoretically Poincare dual to (C_0(X,δ)\otimes_{C_0(X)} C_τ(X)) xG, where δ^{-1} is the inverse of δin the Brauer group. We deduce this from a strengthening of Kasparov's duality theorem RKK^G(X; A,B) \cong KK^G(C_τ(X)\otimes A, B). As applications we also obtain a version of the above Poincare duality with X replaced by a compact G-manifold M and for twisted group algebras C*(G,ω) if G satisfies some additional properties related to the Dirac-dual Dirac method for the Baum-Connes conjecture.

Inheritance of Isomorphism Conjectures under colimits

We investigate when Isomorphism Conjectures, such as the ones due to Baum-Connes, Bost and Farrell-Jones, are stable under colimits of groups over directed sets (with not necessarily injective structure maps). We show in particular that both the K-theoretic Farrell-Jones Conjecture and the Bost Conjecture with coefficients hold for those groups for which Higson, Lafforgue and Skandalis have disproved the Baum-Connes Conjecture with coefficients.
