Incremental Dissipativity based Control of Discrete-Time Nonlinear Systems via the LPV Framework

Unlike for Linear Time-Invariant (LTI) systems, for nonlinear systems, there exists no general framework for systematic convex controller design which incorporates performance shaping. The Linear Parameter-Varying (LPV) framework sought to bridge this gap by extending convex LTI synthesis results such that they could be applied to nonlinear systems. However, recent literature has shown that naive application of the LPV framework can fail to guarantee the desired asymptotic stability guarantees for nonlinear systems. Incremental dissipativity theory has been successfully used in the literature to overcome these issues for Continuous-Time (CT) systems. However, so far no solution has been proposed for output-feedback based incremental control for the Discrete-Time (DT) case. Using recent results on convex analysis of incremental dissipativity for DT nonlinear systems, in this paper, we propose a convex output-feedback controller synthesis method to ensure closed-loop incremental dissipativity of DT nonlinear systems via the LPV framework. The proposed method is applied on a simulation example, demonstrating improved stability and performance properties compared to a standard LPV controller design.

Decoupling multivariate functions using a non-parametric Filtered CPD approach

Black-box model structures are dominated by large multivariate functions. Usually a generic basis function expansion is used, e.g. a polynomial basis, and the parameters of the function are tuned given the data. This is a pragmatic and often necessary step considering the black-box nature of the problem. However, having identified a suitable function, there is no need to stick to the original basis. So-called decoupling techniques aim at translating multivariate functions into an alternative basis, thereby both reducing the number of parameters and retrieving underlying structure. In this work a filtered canonical polyadic decomposition (CPD) is introduced. It is a non-parametric method which is able to retrieve decoupled functions even when facing non-unique decompositions. Tackling this obstacle paves the way for a large number of modelling applications.

Duality and $H_{\infty}$-Optimal Control Of Coupled ODE-PDE Systems

In this paper, we present a convex formulation of $H_{\infty}$-optimal control problem for coupled linear ODE-PDE systems with one spatial dimension. First, we reformulate the coupled ODE-PDE system as a Partial Integral Equation (PIE) system and show that stability and $H_{\infty}$ performance of the PIE system implies that of the ODE-PDE system. We then construct a dual PIE system and show that asymptotic stability and $H_{\infty}$ performance of the dual system is equivalent to that of the primal PIE system. Next, we pose a convex dual formulation of the stability and $H_{\infty}$-performance problems using the Linear PI Inequality (LPI) framework. LPIs are a generalization of LMIs to Partial Integral (PI) operators and can be solved using PIETOOLS, a MATLAB toolbox. Next, we use our duality results to formulate the stabilization and $H_{\infty}$-optimal state-feedback control problems as LPIs. Finally, we illustrate the accuracy and scalability of the algorithms by constructing controllers for several numerical examples.

A Generalized LMI Formulation for Input-Output Analysis of Linear Systems of ODEs Coupled with PDEs

In this paper, we consider input-output properties of linear systems consisting of PDEs on a finite domain coupled with ODEs through the boundary conditions of the PDE. This framework can be used to represent e.g. a lumped mass fixed to a beam or a system with delay. This work generalizes the sufficiency proof of the KYP Lemma for ODEs to coupled ODE-PDE systems using a recently developed concept of fundamental state and the associated boundary-condition-free representation. The conditions of the generalized KYP are tested using the PQRS positive matrix parameterization of operators resulting in a finite-dimensional LMI, feasibility of which implies prima facie provable passivity or L2-gain of the system. No discretization or approximation is involved at any step and we use numerical examples to demonstrate that the bounds obtained are not conservative in any significant sense and that computational complexity is lower than existing methods involving finite-dimensional projection of PDEs.

Model reduction for linear parameter-varying systems through parameter projection

For affine linear parameter-varying (LPV) systems, this paper develops two parameter reduction methods for reducing the dimension of the parameter space. The first method achieves the complexity reduction by transforming the affine LPV system into a parameter-ordered form and establishing an affine upper bound of the system Gramians, which is extended to time-varying rate-bounded parameters. The second method is based on considering the sensitivity function of the transfer function and time evolution equations. Both methods are applied to an academic example and a thermal model. Simulation results together with some analysis are given.

Representation and Stability Analysis of PDE-ODE Coupled Systems

In this work, we present a scalable Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) based framework to verify the stability of a set of linear Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) in one spatial dimension coupled with a set of Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs) via input-output based interconnection. Our approach extends the newly developed state space representation and stability analysis of coupled PDEs that allows parametrizing the Lyapunov function on $L_2$ with multipliers and integral operators using polynomial kernels of semi-separable class. In particular, under arbitrary well-posed boundary conditions, we define the linear operator inequalities on $\mathbb{R}^n \times L_2$ and cast the stability condition as a feasibility problem constrained by LMIs. In this framework, no discretization or approximation is required to verify the stability conditions of PDE-ODE coupled systems. The developed algorithm has been implemented in MATLAB where the stability of example PDE-ODE coupled systems are verified.

Affine Parameter-Dependent Lyapunov Functions for LPV Systems with Affine Dependence

This paper deals with the certification problem for robust quadratic stability, robust state convergence, and robust quadratic performance of linear systems that exhibit bounded rates of variation in their parameters. We consider both continuous-time (CT) and discrete-time (DT) parameter-varying systems. In this paper, we provide a uniform method for this certification problem in both cases and we show that, contrary to what was claimed previously, the DT case requires a significantly different treatment compared to the existing CT results. In the established uniform approach, quadratic Lyapunov functions, that are affine in the parameter, are used to certify robust stability, robust convergence rates, and robust performance in terms of linear matrix inequality feasibility tests. To exemplify the procedure, we solve the certification problem for $\mathscr{L}_2$-gain performance both in the CT and the DT cases. A numerical example is given to show that the proposed approach is less conservative than a method with slack variables.

Parametric model order reduction for large-scale and complex thermal systems

In this paper, a parametric model order reduction (pMOR) technique is proposed to find a simplified system representation of a large-scale and complex thermal system. The main principle behind this technique is that any change of the physical parameters in the high-fidelity model can be updated directly in the simplified model. For deriving the parametric reduced model, a Krylov subspace method is employed which yields the relevant subspaces of the projected state. With the help of the projection operator, first moments of the low-rank model are set identical to the correspondent moments of the original model. Additionally, a prior upper bound of the error induced by the approximation is derived.

Control refinement for discrete-time descriptor systems: a behavioural approach via simulation relations

The analysis of industrial processes, modelled as descriptor systems, is often computationally hard due to the presence of both algebraic couplings and difference equations of high order. In this paper, we introduce a control refinement notion for these descriptor systems that enables analysis and control design over related reduced-order systems. Utilising the behavioural framework, we extend upon the standard hierarchical control refinement for ordinary systems and allow for algebraic couplings inherent to descriptor systems.

Robust Fault Diagnosis by Optimal Input Design for Self-sensing Systems

This paper presents a methodology for model based robust fault diagnosis and a methodology for input design to obtain optimal diagnosis of faults. The proposed algorithm is suitable for real time implementation. Issues of robustness are addressed for the input design and fault diagnosis methodologies. The proposed technique allows robust fault diagnosis under suitable conditions on the system uncertainty. The designed input and fault diagnosis techniques are illustrated by numerical simulation.
