Left-invariant Pseudo-Riemannian metrics on Lie groups: The null cone

We study left-invariant pseudo-Riemannian metrics on Lie groups using the bracket flow of the corresponding Lie algebra. We focus on metrics where the Lie algebra is in the null cone of the $G=O(p,q)$-action; i.e., Lie algebras $μ$ where zero is in the closure of the orbits: $0\in\overline{G\cdot μ}$. We provide examples of such Lie groups in various signatures and give some general results. For signatures $(1,q)$ and $(2,q)$ we classify all cases belonging to the null cone. More generally, we show that all nilpotent and completely solvable Lie algebras are in the null cone of some $O(p,q)$ action. In addition, several examples of non-trivial Levi-decomposable Lie algebras in the null cone are given.

Opening Pandora's box: Kundt solutions to Conformal Killing Gravity

We consider Kundt solutions to vacuum Conformal Killing Gravity (CKG) proposed by Harada and find numerous solutions in four dimensions and in higher dimensions. In CKG theory the cosmological constant appears as an integration constant, and hence, is naturally embedded in the theory. However, by considering Kundt solutions to CKG we seemingly open Pandora's box: We find so many solutions so a selection criterium is needed in CKG to explain the current accelerated expansion of the universe.

Real GIT with applications to compatible representations and Wick-rotations

Motivated by Wick-rotations of pseudo-Riemannian manifolds, we study real geometric invariant theory (GIT) and compatible representations. We extend some of the results from earlier works \cite{W2,W1}, in particular, we give some sufficient as well as necessary conditions for when pseudo-Riemannian manifolds are Wick-rotatable to other signatures. For arbitrary signatures, we consider a Wick-rotatable pseudo-Riemannian manifold with closed $O(p,q)$-orbits, and thus generalise the existence condition found in \cite{W1}. Using these existence conditions we also derive an invariance theorem for Wick-rotations of arbitrary signatures.

A Wick-rotatable metric is purely electric

We show that a metric of arbitrary dimension and signature which allows for a standard Wick-rotation to a Riemannian metric necessarily has a purely electric Riemann and Weyl tensor.

Wick rotations and real GIT

We define Wick-rotations by considering pseudo-Riemannian manifolds as real slices of a holomorphic Riemannian manifold. From a frame bundle viewpoint Wick-rotations between different pseudo-Riemannian spaces can then be studied through their structure groups which are real forms of the corresponding complexified Lie group (different real forms $O(p,q)$ of the complex Lie group $O(n,\mathbb{C})$). In this way, we can use real GIT (geometric invariant theory) to derive several new results regarding the existence, and non-existence, of such Wick-rotations. As an explicit example, we Wick rotate a known $G_2$-holonomy manifold to a pseudo-Riemannian manifold with split-$G_2$ holonomy.

$\mathcal{I}$-degenerate pseudo-Riemannian metrics

In this paper we study pseudo-Riemannian spaces with a degenerate curvature structure i.e. there exists a continuous family of metrics having identical polynomial curvature invariants. We approach this problem by utilising an idea coming from invariant theory. This involves the existence of a boost which is assumed to extend to a neighbourhood. This approach proves to be very fruitful: It produces a class of metrics containing all known examples of $\mathcal{I}$-degenerate metrics. To date, only Kundt and Walker metrics have been given, however, our study gives a plethora of examples showing that $\mathcal{I}$-degenerate metrics extend beyond the Kundt and Walker examples. The approach also gives a useful criterion for a metric to be $\mathcal{I}$-degenerate. Specifically, we use this to study the subclass of VSI and CSI metrics (i.e., spaces where polynomial curvature invariants are all vanishing or constants, respectively).

Pseudo-Riemannian VSI spaces II

In this paper we consider pseudo-Riemannian spaces of arbitrary signature for which all of the polynomial curvature invariants vanish (VSI spaces). Using an algebraic classification of pseudo-Riemannian spaces in terms of the boost-weight decomposition we first show more generally that a space which is not characterised by its invariants must possess the ${\bf S}_1^G$-property. As a corollary, we then show that a VSI space must possess the ${\bf N}^G$-property (these results are the analogues of the alignment theorem, including corollaries, for Lorentzian spacetimes). As an application we classify all 4D neutral VSI spaces and show that these belong to one of two classes: (1) those that possess a geodesic, expansion-free, shear-free, and twist-free null-congruence (Kundt metrics), or (2) those that possess an invariant null plane (Walker metrics). By explicit construction we show that the latter class contains a set of VSI metrics which have not previously been considered in the literature.

Ricci Nilsoliton Black Holes

We follow a constructive approach and find higher-dimensional black holes with Ricci nilsoliton horizons. The spacetimes are solutions to Einstein's equation with a negative cosmological constant and generalises therefore, anti-de Sitter black hole spacetimes. The approach combines a work by Lauret -- which relate so-called Ricci nilsolitons and Einstein solvmanifolds -- and an earlier work by the author. The resulting black hole spacetimes are asymptotically Einstein solvmanifolds and thus, are examples of solutions which are not asymptotically Anti-de Sitter. We show that any nilpotent group in dimension $n\leq 6$ has a corresponding Ricci nilsoliton black hole solution in dimension (n+2). Furthermore, we show that in dimensions (n+2)>8, there exists an infinite number of locally distinct Ricci nilsoliton black hole metrics.

Evolution of a Simple Inhomogeneous Anisotropic Cosmological Model with Diffusion

We investigate a simple inhomogeneous anisotropic cosmology (plane symmetric $G_2$ model) filled with a tilted perfect fluid undergoing velocity diffusion on a scalar field. Considered are two types of fluid: dust and radiation. We solve the system of Einstein field equations and diffusion equations numerically and demonstrate how the universe evolves towards its future asymptotic state. Also, typical time scales of characteristic processes are determined. The obtained results for dust- and radiation-filled cosmologies are compared to each other and to those in the diffusionless case, giving a hint on which effects can be the result of including diffusion in more complicated models. For example, diffusion causes the accelerated expansion stage to arrive at later times.

Refinements of the Weyl tensor classification in five dimensions

We refine the null alignment classification of the Weyl tensor of a five-dimensional spacetime. The paper focusses on the algebraically special alignment types {\bf {N}}, {\bf {III}}, {\bf {II}} and {\bf {D}}, while types {\bf {I}} and {\bf {G}} are briefly discussed. A first refinement is provided by the notion of spin type of the components of highest boost weight. Second, we analyze the Segre types of the Weyl operator acting on bivector space and examine the intersection with the spin type classification. We present a full treatment for types {\bf {N}} and {\bf {III}}, and illustrate the classification from different viewpoints (Segre type, rank, spin type) for types {\bf {II}} and {\bf {D}}, paying particular attention to possible nilpotence, which is a new feature of higher dimensions. We also point out other essential differences with the four-dimensional case. In passing, we exemplify the refined classification by mentioning the special subtypes associated to certain important spacetimes, such as Myers-Perry black holes, black strings, Robinson-Trautman spacetimes, and purely electric/magnetic type {\bf {D}} spacetimes.

A spacetime not characterised by its invariants is of aligned type II

By using invariant theory we show that a (higher-dimensional) Lorentzian metric that is not characterised by its invariants must be of aligned type II; i.e., there exists a frame such that all the curvature tensors are simultaneously of type II. This implies, using the boost-weight decomposition, that for such a metric there exists a frame such that all positive boost-weight components are zero. Indeed, we show a more general result, namely that any set of tensors which is not characterised by its invariants, must be of aligned type II. This result enables us to prove a number of related results, among them the algebraic VSI conjecture.

All metrics have curvature tensors characterised by its invariants as a limit: the ε-property

We prove a generalisation of the $ε$-property, namely that for any dimension and signature, a metric which is not characterised by its polynomial scalar curvature invariants, there is a frame such that the components of the curvature tensors can be arbitrary close to a certain "background". This "background" is defined by its curvature tensors: it is characterised by its curvature tensors and has the same polynomial curvature invariants as the original metric.

Algebraic classification of spacetimes using discriminating scalar curvature invariants

The Weyl and Ricci tensors can be algebraically classified in a Lorentzian spacetime of arbitrary dimensions using alignment theory. Used in tandem with the boost weight decomposition and curvature operators, the algebraic classification of the Weyl tensor and the Ricci tensor in higher dimensions can then be refined utilizing their eigenbivector and eigenvalue structure, respectively. In particular, for a tensor of a particular algebraic type, the associated operator will have a restricted eigenvector structure, and this can then be used to determine necessary conditions for a particular algebraic type. We shall present an analysis of the discriminants of the associated characteristic equation for the eigenvalues of an operator to determine the conditions on (the associated) curvature tensor for a given algebraic type. We will describe an algorithm which enables us to completely determine the eigenvalue structure of the curvature operator, up to degeneracies, in terms of a set of discriminants. We then express these conditions (discriminants) in terms of these polynomial curvature invariants. In particular, we can use the techniques described to study the necessary conditions in arbitrary dimensions for the Weyl and Ricci curvature operators (and hence the higher dimensional Weyl and Ricci tensors) to be of algebraic type II or D, and create syzygies which are necessary for the special algebraic type to be fulfilled. We are consequently able to determine the necessary conditions in terms of simple scalar polynomial curvature invariants in order for the higher dimensional Weyl and Ricci tensors to be of type II or D. We explicitly determine the scalar polynomial curvature invariants for a Weyl or Ricci tensor to be of type II or D in 5D. A number of simple examples are presented and, in particular, we present a detailed analysis of the important example of a 5D rotating black ring.

On the algebraic classification of pseudo-Riemannian spaces

We consider arbitrary-dimensional pseudo-Riemannian spaces of signature $(k,k+m)$. We introduce a boost-weight decomposition and define a number of algebraic properties (e.g., the ${\bf S}_i$- and ${\bf N}$-properties) and present a boost-weight decomposition to classify the Weyl tensors of arbitrary signature and discuss degenerate algebraic types (e.g., VSI spaces). We consider the four dimensional neutral signature space as an illustration.

Pseudo-Riemannian VSI spaces

In this paper we consider pseudo-Riemannian spaces of arbitrary signature for which all of their polynomial curvature invariants vanish (VSI spaces). We discuss an algebraic classification of pseudo-Riemannian spaces in terms of the boost weight decomposition and define the ${\bf S}_i$- and ${\bf N}$-properties, and show that if the curvature tensors of the space possess the ${\bf N}$-property then it is a VSI space. We then use this result to construct a set of metrics that are VSI. All of the VSI spaces constructed possess a geodesic, expansion-free, shear-free, and twist-free null-congruence. We also discuss the related Walker metrics.

Future asymptotics of tilted Bianchi type II cosmologies

In this paper we study the future asymptotics of spatially homogeneous Bianchi type II cosmologies with a tilted perfect fluid with a linear equation of state. By means of Hamiltonian methods we first find a monotone function for a special tilted case, which subsequently allows us to construct a new set of monotone functions for the general tilted type II cosmologies. In the context of a new partially gauge invariant dynamical system, this then leads to a proof for a theorem that for the first time gives a complete description of the future asymptotic states of the general tilted Bianchi type II models. The generality of our arguments suggests how one can produce monotone functions that are useful for determining the asymptotics of other tilted perfect fluid cosmologies, as well as for other sources.

Lorentzian manifolds and scalar curvature invariants

We discuss (arbitrary-dimensional) Lorentzian manifolds and the scalar polynomial curvature invariants constructed from the Riemann tensor and its covariant derivatives. Recently, we have shown that in four dimensions a Lorentzian spacetime metric is either $\mathcal{I}$-non-degenerate, and hence locally characterized by its scalar polynomial curvature invariants, or is a degenerate Kundt spacetime. We present a number of results that generalize these results to higher dimensions and discuss their consequences and potential physical applications.

Negatively curved left-invariant metrics on Lie groups

We discuss negatively curved homogeneous spaces admitting a simply transitive group of isometries, or equivalently, negatively curved left-invariant metrics on Lie groups. Negatively curved spaces have a remarkably rich and diverse structure and are interesting from both a mathematical and a physical perspective. As well as giving general criteria for having left-invariant metrics with negative Ricci curvature scalar, we also consider special cases, like Einstein spaces and Ricci nilsolitons. We point out the relevance these spaces play in some higher-dimensional theories of gravity. In particular, we show that the Ricci nilsolitons are Riemannian solutions to certain higher-curvature gravity theories.
