Coherent charge transport through molecular wires: influence of strong Coulomb repulsion

We derive a master equation for the electron transport through molecular wires in the limit of strong Coulomb repulsion. This approach is applied to two typical situations: First, we study transport through an open conduction channel for which we find that the current exhibits an ohmic-like behaviour. Second, we explore the transport properties of a bridged molecular wire, where the current decays exponentially as a function of the wire length. For both situations, we discuss the differences to the case of non-interacting electrons.

Coherence stabilization of a two-qubit gate by AC fields

We consider a CNOT gate operation under the influence of quantum bit-flip noise and demonstrate that ac fields can change bit-flip noise into phase noise and thereby improve coherence up to several orders of magnitude while the gate operation time remains unchanged. Within a high-frequency approximation, both purity and fidelity of the gate operation are studied analytically. The numerical treatment with a Bloch-Redfield master equation confirms the analytical results.

Driven quantum transport on the nanoscale

We explore the prospects to control by use of time-dependent fields quantum transport phenomena in nanoscale systems. In particular, we study for driven conductors the electron current and its noise properties. We review recent corresponding theoretical descriptions which are based on Floquet theory. Alternative approaches, as well as various limiting approximation schemes are investigated and compared. The general theory is subsequently applied to different representative nanoscale devices, like the non-adiabatic pumps, molecular gates, molecular quantum ratchets, and molecular transistors. Potential applications range from molecular wires under the influence of strong laser fields to microwave-irradiated quantum dots.

Shot noise control in ac-driven nanoscale conductors

We derive within a time-dependent scattering formalism expressions for both the current through ac-driven nanoscale conductors and its fluctuations. The results for the time-dependent current, its time average, and, above all, the driven shot noise properties assume an explicit and serviceable form by relating the propagator to a non-Hermitian Floquet theory. The driven noise cannot be expressed in terms of transmission probabilities. The results are valid for a driving of arbitrary strength and frequency. The connection with commonly known approximation schemes such as the Tien-Gordon approach or a high-frequency approximation is elucidated together with a discussion of the corresponding validity regimes. Within this formalism, we study the coherent suppression of current and noise caused by properly chosen electromagnetic fields.

Vibrational effects in laser driven molecular wires

The influence of an electron-vibrational coupling on the laser control of electron transport through a molecular wire that is attached to several electronic leads is investigated. These molecular vibrational modes induce an effective electron-electron interaction. In the regime where the wire electrons couple weakly to both the external leads and the vibrational modes, we derive within a Hartree-Fock approximation a nonlinear set of quantum kinetic equations. The quantum kinetic theory is then used to evaluate the laser driven, time-averaged electron current through the wire-leads contacts. This novel formalism is applied to two archetypical situations in the presence of electron-vibrational effects, namely, (i) the generation of a ratchet or pump current in a symmetrical molecule by a harmonic mixing field and (ii) the laser switching of the current through the molecule.

Coherence control for qubits

We study the influence of an external driving field on the coherence properties of a qubit under the influence of bit-flip noise. In the presence of driving, two paradigmatic cases are considered: (i) a field that results for a suitable choice of the parameters in so-called coherent destruction of tunneling and (ii) one that commutes with the static qubit Hamiltonian. In each case, we give for high-frequency driving a lower bound for the coherence time. This reveals the conditions under which the external fields can be used for coherence stabilization.

Charge transport through a molecule driven by a high-frequency field

We study the current and the associated noise for the transport through a two-site molecule driven by an external oscillating field. Within a high-frequency approximation, the time-dependent Hamiltonian is mapped to a static one with effective parameters that depend on the driving amplitude and frequency. This analysis allows an intuitive physical picture explaining the nontrivial structure found in the noise properties as a function of the driving amplitude. The presence of dips in the Fano factor permits a control of the noise level by means of an appropriate external driving.

Chemical-potential standard for atomic Bose-Einstein condensates

When subject to an external time periodic perturbation of frequency $f$, a Josephson-coupled two-state Bose-Einstein condensate responds with a constant chemical potential difference $Δμ=khf$, where $h$ is Planck's constant and $k$ is an integer. We propose an experimental procedure to produce ac-driven atomic Josephson devices that may be used to define a standard of chemical potential. We investigate how to circumvent some of the specific problems derived from the present lack of advanced atom circuit technology. We include the effect of dissipation due to quasiparticles, which is essential to help the system relax towards the exact Shapiro resonance, and set limits to the range of values which the various physical quantities must have in order to achieve a stable and accurate chemical potential difference between the macroscopic condensates.

Current Noise in ac-Driven Nanoscale Conductors

The theory for current fluctuations in ac-driven transport through nanoscale systems is put forward. By use of a generalized, non-Hermitian Floquet theory we derive novel explicit expressions for the time-averaged current and the zero-frequency component of the power spectrum of current fluctuations. A distinct suppression of both the zero-frequency noise and the dc-current occurs for suitably tailored ac-fields. The relative level of transport noise, being characterized by a Fano factor, can selectively be manipulated by ac-sources; in particular, it exhibits both characteristic maxima and minima near current suppression.

Resonant laser excitation of molecular wires

We investigate the influence of external laser excitations on the average current through bridged molecules. For the computation of the current, we use a numerically very efficient formalism that is based on the Floquet solutions of the time-dependent molecule Hamiltonian. It is found that the current as a function of the laser frequency exhibits characteristic peaks originating from resonant excitations of electrons to bridge levels which are unoccupied in the absence of the radiation. The electrical current through the molecule can exhibit a drastic enhancement by several orders of magnitude.

Rectification of laser-induced electronic transport through molecules

We study the influence of laser radiation on the electron transport through a molecular wire weakly coupled to two leads. In the absence of a generalized parity symmetry, the molecule rectifies the laser induced current, resulting in directed electron transport without any applied voltage. We consider two generic ways of dynamical symmetry breaking: mixing of different harmonics of the laser field and molecules consisting of asymmetric groups. For the evaluation of the nonlinear current, a numerically efficient formalism is derived which is based upon the Floquet solutions of the driven molecule. This permits a treatment in the non-adiabatic regime and beyond linear response.

Decoherence in resonantly driven bistable systems

We study dissipative tunneling in a double well potential that is driven close to a resonance between the lowest tunnel doublet and a singlet. While the coherent dynamics can be described well within a three-level approximation, dissipative transitions to levels outside the singlet and the doublet may play a crucial role. Moreover, such transitions can enhance the entropy production significantly.

Laser controlled molecular switches and transistors

We investigate the possibility of optical current control through single molecules which are weakly coupled to leads. A master equation approach for the transport through a molecule is combined with a Floquet theory for the time-dependent molecule. This yields an efficient numerical approach to the evaluation of the current through time-dependent nano-structures in the presence of a finite external voltage. We propose tunable optical current switching in two- and three-terminal molecular electronic devices driven by properly adjusted laser fields, i.e. a novel class of molecular transistors.

Molecular Wires Acting as Coherent Quantum Ratchets

The effect of laser fields on the electron transport through a molecular wire being weakly coupled to two leads is investigated. The molecular wire acts as a coherent quantum ratchet if the molecule is composed of periodically arranged, asymmetric chemical groups. This setup presents a quantum rectifier with a finite dc-response in the absence of a static bias. The nonlinear current is evaluated in closed form within the Floquet basis of the isolated, driven wire. The current response reveals multiple current reversals together with a nonlinear dependence (reflecting avoided quasi-energy crossings) on both, the amplitude and the frequency of the laser field. The current saturates for long wires at a nonzero value, while it may change sign upon decreasing its length.

Oscillatory decay of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate

We study the decay of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate with negative effective interaction energy. With a decreasing atom number due to losses, the atom-atom interaction becomes less important and the system undergoes a transition from a bistable Josephson regime to the monostable Rabi regime, displaying oscillations in phase and number. We study the equations of motion and derive an analytical expression for the oscillation amplitude. A quantum trajectory simulation reveals that the classical description fails for low emission rates, as expected from analytical considerations. Observation of the proposed effect will provide evidence for negative effective interaction.

Phase resolution limit in macroscopic interference between Bose-Einstein condensates

We study the competition between phase definition and quantum phase fluctuations in interference experiments between independently formed Bose condensates. While phase-sensitive detection of atoms makes the phase progressively better defined, interactions tend to randomize it faster as the uncertainty in the relative particle number grows. A steady state is reached when the two effects cancel each other. Then the phase resolution saturates to a value that grows with the ratio between the interaction strength and the atom detection rate, and the average phase and number begin to fluctuate classically. We discuss how our study applies to both recently performed and possible future experiments.

Driven Tunneling: Chaos and Decoherence

Chaotic tunneling in a driven double-well system is investigated in absence as well as in the presence of dissipation. As the constitutive mechanism of chaos-assisted tunneling, we focus on the dynamics in the vicinity of three-level crossings in the quasienergy spectrum. The coherent quantum dynamics near the crossing is described satisfactorily by a three-state model. It fails, however, for the corresponding dissipative dynamics, because incoherent transitions due to the interaction with the environment indirectly couple the three states in the crossing to the remaining quasienergy states. The asymptotic state of the driven dissipative quantum dynamics partially resembles the, possibly strange, attractor of the corresponding damped driven classical dynamics, but also exhibits characteristic quantum effects.

Disordered Systems in Phase Space

As a function of the disorder strength in a mesoscopic system, the electron dynamics crosses over from the ballistic through the diffusive towards the localized regime. The ballistic and the localized situation correspond to integrable or regular behavior while diffusive conductors correspond to chaotic behavior. The chaotic or regular character of single wave functions can be inferred from phase space concepts like the Husimi distribution and the Wehrl entropy. These quantities provide useful information about the structure of states in disordered systems. We investigate the phase space structure of one dimensional (1d) and 2d disordered systems within the Anderson model. The Wehrl entropy of the eigenstates allows to detect the crossover between the ballistic, diffusive and localized regime.
