Global well-posedness of the Maxwell-Dirac system in two space dimensions

In recent work, Grünrock and Pecher proved that the Dirac-Klein-Gordon system in 2d is globally well-posed in the charge class (data in $L^2$ for the spinor and in a suitable Sobolev space for the scalar field). Here we obtain the analogous result for the full Maxwell-Dirac system in 2d. Making use of the null structure of the system, found in earlier joint work with Damiano Foschi, we first prove local well-posedness in the charge class. To extend the solutions globally we build on an idea due to Colliander, Holmer and Tzirakis. For this we rely on the fact that MD is charge subcritical in two space dimensions, and make use of the null structure of the Maxwell part.

Bilinear Fourier restriction estimates related to the 2d wave equation

We study bilinear $L^2$ Fourier restriction estimates which are related to the 2d wave equation in the sense that we restrict to subsets of thickened null cones. In an earlier paper we studied the corresponding 3d problem, obtaining several refinements of the Klainerman-Machedon type estimates. The latter are bilinear generalizations of the $L^4$ estimate of Strichartz for the 3d wave equation. In 2d there is no $L^4$ estimate for solutions of the wave equation, but as we show here, one can nevertheless obtain $L^2$ bilinear estimates for thickened null cones, which can be viewed as analogues of the 3d Klainerman-Machedon type estimates. We then prove a number of refinements of these estimates, analogous to those we obtained earlier in 3d. The main application we have in mind is the Maxwell-Dirac system.

Atlas of products for wave-Sobolev spaces on $\mathbf R^{1+3}$

The wave-Sobolev spaces $H^{s,b}$ are $L^2$-based Sobolev spaces on the Minkowski space-time $\R^{1+n}$, with Fourier weights are adapted to the symbol of the d'Alembertian. They are a standard tool in the study of regularity properties of nonlinear wave equations, and in such applications the need arises for product estimates in these spaces. Unfortunately, it seems that with every new application some estimates come up which have not yet appeared in the literature, and then one has to resort to a set of well-established procedures for proving the missing estimates. To relieve the tedium of having to constantly fill in such gaps "by hand", we make here a systematic effort to determine the complete set of estimates in the bilinear case. We determine a set of necessary conditions for a product estimate $H^{s_1,b_1} \cdot H^{s_2,b_2} \hookrightarrow H^{-s_0,-b_0}$ to hold. These conditions define a polyhedron $Ω$ in the space $\R^6$ of exponents $(s_0,s_1,s_2,b_0,b_1,b_2)$. We then show, in space dimension $n=3$, that all points in the interior of $Ω$, and all points on the faces minus the edges, give product estimates. We can also allow some but not all points on the edges, but here we do not claim to have the sharp result. The corresponding result for $n=2$ and $n=1$ will be published elsewhere.

Finite-energy global well-posedness of the Maxwell-Klein-Gordon system in Lorenz gauge

It is known that the Maxwell-Klein-Gordon system (M-K-G), when written relative to the Coulomb gauge, is globally well-posed for finite-energy initial data. This result, due to Klainerman and Machedon, relies crucially on the null structure of the main bilinear terms of M-K-G in Coulomb gauge. It appears to have been believed that such a structure is not present in Lorenz gauge, but we prove here that it is, and we use this fact to prove finite-energy global well-posedness in Lorenz gauge. The latter has the advantage, compared to Coulomb gauge, of being Lorentz invariant, hence M-K-G in Lorenz gauge is a system of nonlinear wave equations, whereas in Coulomb gauge the system has a less symmetric form, as it contains also a nonlinear elliptic equation.

Null structure and almost optimal local well-posedness of the Maxwell-Dirac system

We uncover the full null structure of the Maxwell-Dirac system in Lorenz gauge. This structure, which cannot be seen in the individual component equations, but only when considering the system as a whole, is expressed in terms of tri- and quadrilinear integral forms with cancellations measured by the angles between spatial frequencies. In the 3D case, we prove frequency-localized $L^2$ space-time estimates for these integral forms at the scale invariant regularity up to a logarithmic loss, hence we obtain almost optimal local well-posedness of the system by iteration.

Anisotropic bilinear $L^2$ estimates related to the 3d wave equation

We first review the $L^2$ bilinear generalizations of the $L^4$ estimate of Strichartz for solutions of the homogeneous 3D wave equation, and give a short proof based solely on an estimate for the volume of intersection of two thickened spheres. We then go on to prove a number of new results, the main theme being how additional, anisotropic Fourier restrictions influence the estimates. Moreover, we prove some refinements which are able to simultaneously detect both concentrations and nonconcentrations in Fourier space.

Low regularity well-posedness of the Dirac-Klein-Gordon equations in one space dimension

We extend recent results of S. Machihara and H. Pecher on low regularity well-posedness of the Dirac-Klein-Gordon (DKG) system in one dimension. Our proof, like that of Pecher, relies on the null structure of DKG, recently completed by D'Ancona, Foschi and Selberg, but we show that in 1d the argument can be simplified by modifying the choice of projections for the Dirac operator. We also show that the result is best possible up to endpoint cases, if one iterates in Bourgain-Klainerman-Machedon spaces.

Global well-posedness below the charge norm for the Dirac-Klein-Gordon system in one space dimension

We prove global well-posedness below the charge norm (i.e., the $L^2$ norm of the Dirac spinor) for the Dirac-Klein-Gordon system of equations (DKG) in one space dimension. Adapting a method due to Bourgain, we split off the high frequency part of the initial data for the spinor, and exploit nonlinear smoothing effects to control the evolution of the high frequency part. To prove the nonlinear smoothing we rely on the null structure of the DKG system, and bilinear estimates in Bourgain-Klainerman-Machedon spaces.

Local well-posedness below the charge norm for the Dirac-Klein-Gordon system in two space dimensions

We prove that the Cauchy problem for the Dirac-Klein-Gordon equations in two space dimensions is locally well-posed in a range of Sobolev spaces of negative index for the Dirac spinor, and an associated range of spaces of positive index for the meson field. In particular, we can go below the charge norm, that is, the $L^2$ norm of the spinor. We hope that this can have implications for the global existence problem, since the charge is conserved. Our result relies on the null structure of the system, and bilinear space-time estimates for the homogeneous wave equation.

Null structure and almost optimal local well-posedness of the Dirac-Klein-Gordon system

We prove almost optimal local well-posedness for the coupled Dirac-Klein-Gordon (DKG) system of equations in 1+3 dimensions. The proof relies on the null structure of the system, combined with bilinear spacetime estimates of Klainerman-Machedon type. It has been known for some time that the Klein-Gordon part of the system has a null structure; here we uncover an additional null structure in the Dirac equation, which cannot be seen directly, but appears after a duality argument.

On the asymptotic analysis of the Dirac-Maxwell system in the nonrelativistic limit

We deal with the ``nonrelativistic limit'', i.e. the limit c to infinity, where c is the speed of light, of the nonlinear PDE system obtained by coupling the Dirac equation for a 4-spinor to the Maxwell equations for the self-consistent field created by the ``moving charge'' of the spinor. This limit, sometimes also called ``Post-Newtonian'' limit, yields a Schroedinger-Poisson system, where the spin and the magnetic field no longer appear. However, our splitting of the 4-spinor into two 2-spinors preserves the symmetry of "electrons'' and "positrons''; the latter obeying a Schroedinger equation with ``negative mass'' in the limit. We rigorously prove that in the nonrelativistic limit solutions of the Dirac-Maxwell system converge in the energy space $C([0,T];H^{1})$ to solutions of a Schroedinger-Poisson system, under appropriate (convergence) conditions on the initial data. We also prove that the time interval of existence of local solutions of Dirac-Maxwell is bounded from below by log(c). In fact, for this result we only require uniform $H^{1}$ bounds on the initial data, not convergence. Our key technique is "null form estimates'', extending the work of Klainerman and Machedon and our previous work on the nonrelativistic limit of the Klein-Gordon-Maxwell system.

Almost optimal local well-posedness of the Maxwell-Klein-Gordon equations in 1+4 dimensions

We prove that the Maxwell-Klein-Gordon equations on $\R^{1+4}$ relative to the Coulomb gauge are locally well-posed for initial data in $H^{1+ε}$ for all $ε> 0$. This builds on previous work by Klainerman and Machedon who proved the corresponding result for a model problem derived from the Maxwell-Klein-Gordon system by ignoring the elliptic features of the system, as well as cubic terms.

Nonrelativistic limit of Klein-Gordon-Maxwell to Schrodinger-Poisson

We prove that in the nonrelativistic limit, solutions of the Klein-Gordon-Maxwell system in 1+3 dimensions converge in the energy space to solutions of a Schrodinger-Poisson system, under appropriate conditions on the initial data. This requires the splitting of the scalar Klein-Gordon field into a sum of two fields, corresponding, in the physical interpretation, to electrons and positrons.

Bilinear Estimates and Applications to Nonlinear Wave Equations

We undertake a systematic review of some results concerning local well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for certain systems of nonlinear wave equations, with minimal regularity assumptions on the initial data. Moreover we provide a considerably simplified and unified treatment of these results and provide also complete proofs for large data. The paper is also intended as an introduction to and survey of current research in the very active area of nonlinear wave equations. The key ingredients throughout the survey are the use of the null structure of the equations we consider and, intimately tied to it, bilinear estimates.

On an estimate for the wave equation and applications to nonlinear problems

We prove estimates for solutions of the Cauchy problem for the inhomogeneous wave equation on $\R^{1+n}$ in a class of Banach spaces whose norms only depend on the size of the space-time Fourier transform. The estimates are local in time, and this allows one, essentially, to replace the symbol of the wave operator, which vanishes on the light cone in Fourier space, with an inhomogeneous symbol, which can be inverted. Our result improves earlier estimates of this type proved by Klainerman-Machedon. As a corollary, one obtains a rather general result concerning local well-posedness of nonlinear wave equations.
