Investigation of evaluated nuclear data in the prediction of inherent neutron sources

Quantifying inherent neutron sources in matter, particularly $(α, n)$ reactions and spontaneous fission, is important in nuclear engineering and other fields. The SOURCES code is a common tool for calculating the yield and spectrum of such neutrons. This paper critically examines all modelling assumptions and nuclear data in SOURCES and proposes alternative approaches where applicable. For $(α, n)$ reactions, we show that the alpha emission lines for $^{235}\mathrm{U}$ should be updated. Furthermore, we compare four different stopping power data sets for alpha particles slowing down and propose measurements to constrain mixed oxide nuclear fuel data. We use the computer code PHITS to show that energy and angular straggling during the slowing down of alpha particles in the material of interest is unimportant. Then, we compare the cross section and emission spectrum of $(α, n)$ reactions in SOURCES to recently evaluated data libraries. Importantly, the modelling of SOURCES for the emission spectrum seems too simple and may need to be updated. Finally, we compare data on spontaneous fission and show that while the neutron yield from SOURCES is reliable, some discrepancy is found with the neutron spectrum of evaluated data libraries. Complementing this work is an implementation of spontaneous fission in the Monte Carlo code OpenMC.

Study of a longitudinally expanding plasma with the 2PI effective action

A central question in heavy-ion collisions is how the initial far-from-equilibrium medium evolves and thermalizes while it undergoes a rapid longitudinal expansion. In this work we use the two-particle irreducible (2PI) effective action for the first time to consider this question, focusing on $ϕ^4$ scalar theory truncated at three loops. We calculate the momentum distribution of quasiparticles in the medium and show that isotropization takes place. We furthermore consider the thermal mass of quasiparticles and the importance of number-changing processes.

Jet quenching in the glasma phase: medium-induced radiation

Inspired by the recent considerations of parton momentum broadening in the glasma phase, we study the medium-induced soft gluon radiation of jet partons at early times in heavy-ion collisions. The glasma state is assumed to be comprised of independent color domains with homogenous longitudinal fields that vary event by event, and we further complete this model with an event-averaging procedure accounting for the finite correlation length. Using this description, we evaluate the rate of medium-induced radiation from an energetic parton at midrapidity in the glasma phase. We mainly focus on SU(2) color fields for simplicity, also referring to the U(1) case and comparing with the BDMPS-Z rate to gain further insight. Our results show that there is an intricate interplay of the synchrotron-like radiation in a single color domain with the destructive interference between different color domains, after the medium averaging is performed. Thus, we find that the emission rate is sensitive to the matter structure, decreasing for a glasma state populated by smaller color domains, i.e. for a glasma with a larger characteristic saturation scale. Our approach can be applied to more realistic backgrounds, and sets the stage for the modelling of jet evolution in the early stages of heavy-ion collisions.

Isotropization of a longitudinally expanding system of scalar fields in the 2PI formalism

Motivated by isotropization of QCD matter in the initial stages of heavy-ion collisions, we consider a system of scalar fields that undergoes a boost invariant longitudinal expansion. We use the framework of the two-particle irreducible (2PI) effective action, which is close to the underlying quantum field theory, and resum self-energy corrections up to three loops. The resulting 2PI equations of motion are expressed in terms of the Milne coordinates to account for longitudinal expansion. By solving numerically these equations of motion, we can extract the occupation density and the effective mass generated by in-medium interactions. At the largest values of the coupling considered in this study, we observe the onset of isotropization both in the occupation number and in the momentum dependence of the effective mass.

Polarized Photons from the Early Stages of Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions

The polarization of real photons emitted from early-time heavy-ion collisions is calculated, concentrating on the contribution from bremsstrahlung and quark-antiquark annihilation processes at leading order in the strong coupling. The effect of an initial momentum space anisotropy of the parton distribution is evaluated using a model for the non-equilibrium scattering kernel for momentum broadening. The effect on the photon polarization is reported for different degrees of anisotropy. The real photons emitted early during in-medium interactions will be dominantly polarized along the beam axis.

Jet polarisation in an anisotropic medium

We study the evolution of an energetic jet which propagates in an anisotropic quark-gluon plasma, as created in the intermediate stages of ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. We argue that the partons of the jet should acquire a non-zero average polarisation proportional to the medium anisotropy. We first observe that the medium anisotropy introduces a difference between the rates for transverse momentum broadening along the two directions perpendicular to the jet axis. In turn, this difference leads to a polarisation-dependent bias in the BDMPS-Z rates for medium-induced gluon branching. Accordingly, the daughter gluons in a branching process can carry net polarisation even if their parent gluon was unpolarised. Using these splitting rates, we construct kinetic equations which describe the production and transmission of polarisation via multiple branching in an anisotropic medium. The solutions to these equations show that polarisation is efficiently produced via quasi-democratic branchings, but then it is rapidly washed out by the subsequent branchings, due to the inability of soft gluons to keep trace of the polarisation of their parents. Based on that, we conclude that a net polarisation for the jet should survive in the final state if and only if the medium anisotropy is sizeable as the jet escapes the medium.

The momentum broadening of energetic partons in an anisotropic plasma

The quark-gluon plasma produced in heavy-ion collisions is anisotropic throughout its evolution. This anisotropy changes the physics of jet-medium interaction, making it dependent on the momentum direction of the jet. In this paper we analyze transverse momentum broadening of a jet parton interacting with soft gluons in an anisotropic plasma. Our analysis equally applies to momentum broadening of quasiparticles in kinetic theory. We subtract contribution from instability modes in the deep infrared and discuss how our calculation should be complemented in that regime. The resulting anisotropic collision kernel for momentum broadening is qualitatively different from the equilibrium collision kernel and from the isotropic ansatz used in effective kinetic theory. Because of increased medium screening, there is substantially less transverse broadening at low and intermediate momenta.

Probes of the quark-gluon plasma and plasma instabilities

Penetrating probes in heavy-ion collisions, like jets and photons, are sensitive to the transport coefficients of the produced quark-gluon plasma, such as shear and bulk viscosity. Quantifying this sensitivity requires a detailed understanding of photon emission and jet-medium interaction in a non-equilibrium plasma. Up to now, such an understanding has been hindered by plasma instabilities which arise out of equilibrium and lead to spurious divergences when evaluating the rate of interaction of hard probes with the plasma. In this paper, we show that taking into account the time evolution of an unstable plasma cures these divergences. We calculate the time evolution of gluon two-point correlators in a setup with small initial momentum anisotropy and show that the gluon occupation density grows exponentially at early times. Based on this calculation, we argue for a phenomenological prescription where instability poles are subtracted. Finally, we show that in the Abelian case instability fields do not affect medium-induced photon emission to our order of approximation.

Effects of the mean field on fluid dynamics in the relaxation time approximation

In this paper the nonequilibrium correction to the distribution function containing a time and space dependent mass is obtained. Given that, fully consistent fluid dynamic equations are formulated. Then, the physics of the bulk viscosity is elaborated for Boltzmann and Bose-Einstein gases within the relaxation time approximation. It is found that the parametric form of the ratio $ζ/τ_R$ for the quantum gas is affected by the infrared cut-off. This may be an indication that the relaxation time approximation is too crude to obtain a reliable form of bulk viscosity.

Hard probes of non-equilibrium quark-gluon plasma

Jets and photons could play an important role in finding the transport coefficients of the quark-gluon plasma. To this end we analyze their interaction with a non-equilibrium quark-gluon plasma. Using new field-theoretical tools we derive two-point correlators for the plasma which show how instabilities evolve in time. This allows us, for the first time, to derive finite rates of interaction with the medium. We furthermore show that coherent, long-wavelength instability fields in the Abelian limit do not modify the rate of photon emission or jet-medium interaction.

Jets in non-equilibrium quark-gluon plasma

Jets are a promising way to probe the non-equilibrium physics of quark-gluon plasma (QGP). We study how an out-of-equilibrium medium induces a jet particle to emit gluons. Evaluation of the emission rate is complicated by Weibel instabilities which lead to an exponential growth of chromomagnetic fields. Deriving a quantum field theoretical description of an unstable QGP medium, we show that the chromomagnetic fields deflect jet particles during the gluon emission.

Penetrating probes: Jets and photons in a non-equilibrium quark-gluon plasma

We employ new field-theoretical tools to study photons and jets in a non-equilibrium quark-gluon plasma. Jet broadening and photon emission takes place through radiation which is suppressed by repeated and coherent interaction with the medium. We analyze this physics in an anisotropic plasma such as is created in the early stages of heavy-ion collisions. The anisotropy introduces an angular dependence in radiation and reduces its overall rate. This can affect phenomenological predictions of the rapidity dependence and angular flow of jets and photons.

Bulk viscosity of strongly interacting matter in the relaxation time approximation

This paper presents how thermal mean field effects are incorporated consistently in the hydrodynamical modelling of heavy-ion collisions. The nonequilibrium correction to the distribution function resulting from a temperature-dependent mass is obtained in a procedure which automatically satisfies the Landau matching condition and is thermodynamically consistent. The physics of the bulk viscosity is studied here for Boltzmann and Bose-Einstein gases within the Chapman-Enskog and 14-moment approaches in the relaxation time approximation. Constant and temperature-dependent masses are considered in turn. It is shown that, in the small mass limit, both methods lead to the same value of the ratio of the bulk viscosity over its relaxation time. The inclusion of a temperature-dependent mass leads to the emergence of the $β_λ$-function in that ratio, and it is of the expected parametric form for the Boltzmann gas, while for the Bose-Einstein case it is affected by the infrared cut-off. This suggests that the relaxation time approximation may be too crude to obtain a reliable form of $ζ/τ_R$ for gases obeying Bose-Einstein statistics.

Photon emission from quark-gluon plasma out of equilibrium

The photon emission from a non-equilibrium quark-gluon plasma (QGP) is analyzed. We derive an integral equation that describes photon production through quark-antiquark annihilation and quark bremsstrahlung. It includes coherence between different scattering sites, also known as the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect. These leading-order processes are studied for the first time together in an out-of-equilibrium field theoretical treatment that enables the inclusion of viscous corrections to the calculation of electromagnetic emission rates. In the special case of an isotropic, viscous, plasma the integral equation only depends on three constants which capture the non-equilibrium nature of the medium.

Bulk viscous corrections to photon production in the quark-gluon plasma

Photons radiated in heavy-ion collisions are a penetrating probe, and as such can play an important role in the determination of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) transport coefficients. In this work we calculate the bulk viscous correction to photon production in two-to-two scattering reactions. Phase-space integrals describing the bulk viscous correction are evaluated explicitly in order to avoid the forward scattering approximation which is shown to be poor for photons at lower energies. We furthermore present hydrodynamical simulations of AA collisions focusing on the effect of this calculation on photonic observables. Bulk corrections are shown to reduce the elliptic flow of photons at higher $p_T$.

Excitation of radial collective modes in a quantum dot: Beyond linear response

We compare the response of five different models of two interacting electrons in a quantum dot to an external short lived radial excitation that is strong enough to excite the system well beyond the linear response regime. The models considered describe the Coulomb interaction between the electrons in different ways ranging from mean-field approaches to configuration interaction (CI) models, where the two-electron Hamiltonian is diagonalized in a large truncated Fock space. The radially symmetric excitation is selected in order to severely put to test the different approaches to describe the interaction and correlations of an electron system in a nonequilibrium state. As can be expected for the case of only two electrons none of the mean-field models can in full details reproduce the results obtained by the CI model. Nonetheless, some linear and nonlinear characteristics are reproduced reasonably well. All the models show activation of an increasing number of collective modes as the strength of the excitation is increased. By varying slightly the confinement potential of the dot we observe how sensitive the properties of the excitation spectrum are to the Coulomb interaction and its correlation effects. In order to approach closer the question of nonlinearity we solve one of the mean-field models directly in a nonlinear fashion without resorting to iterations.
