Ricci Solitons, Conical Singularities, and Nonuniqueness

In dimension $n=3$, there is a complete theory of weak solutions of Ricci flow - the singular Ricci flows introduced by Kleiner and Lott - which are unique across singularities, as was proved by Bamler and Kleiner. We show that uniqueness should not be expected to hold for Ricci flow weak solutions in dimensions $n\geq5$. Specifically, we exhibit a discrete family of asymptotically conical gradient shrinking solitons, each of which admits non-unique forward continuations by gradient expanding solitons. (v2) We recast the Main Theorem in the language of Kleiner and Lott's Ricci Flow spacetimes and in addition show that topological nonuniqueness is possible for the solutions we construct.

Nonstandard existence proofs for reaction diffusion equations

We give an existence proof for distribution solutions to a scalar reaction diffusion equation, with the aim of illustrating both the differences and the common ingredients of the nonstandard and standard approaches. In particular, our proof shows how the operation of taking the standard part of a nonstandard real number can replace several different compactness theorems, such as Ascoli's theorem and the Banach--Alaoglu theorem on weak$^*$-compactness of the unit ball in the dual of a Banach space.

Uniqueness of two-convex closed ancient solutions to the mean curvature flow

In this paper we consider closed non-collapsed ancient solutions to the mean curvature flow ($n \ge 2$) which are uniformly two-convex. We prove that any two such ancient solutions are the same up to translations and scaling. In particular, they must coincide up to translations and scaling with the rotationally symmetric closed ancient non-collapsed solution constructed by Brian White in (2000), and by Robert Haslhofer and Or Hershkovits in (2016).

Degenerate neckpinches in Ricci flow

In earlier work, we derived formal matched asymptotic profiles for families of Ricci flow solutions developing Type-II degenerate neckpinches. In the present work, we prove that there do exist Ricci flow solutions that develop singularities modeled on each such profile. In particular, we show that for each positive integer $k\geq3$, there exist compact solutions in all dimensions $m\geq3$ that become singular at the rate (T-t)^{-2+2/k}$.

The Zoo of Solitons for Curve Shortening in $\R^n$

We provide a detailed description of solutions of Curve Shortening in $\R^n$ that are invariant under some one-parameter symmetry group of the equation, paying particular attention to geometric properties of the curves, and the asymptotic properties of their ends. We find generalized helices, and a connection with curve shortening on the unit sphere $\Sph^{n-1}$. Expanding rotating solitons turn out to be asymptotic to generalized logarithmic spirals. In terms of asymptotic properties of their ends the rotating shrinking solitons are most complicated. We find that almost all of these solitons are asymptotic to circles. Many of the curve shortening solitons we discuss here are either space curves, or evolving space curves. In addition to the figures in this paper, we have prepared a number of animations of the solitons, which can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/user/solitons2012/videos?view=1.

Formal matched asymptotics for degenerate Ricci flow neckpinches

Gu and Zhu have shown that Type-II Ricci flow singularities develop from nongeneric rotationally symmetric Riemannian metrics on $S^m$, for all $m\geq 3$. In this paper, we describe and provide plausibility arguments for a detailed asymptotic profile and rate of curvature blow-up that we predict such solutions exhibit.

Minimally invasive surgery for Ricci flow singularities

In this paper, we construct smooth forward Ricci flow evolutions of singular initial metrics resulting from rotationally symmetric neckpinches on S^(n+1), without performing an intervening surgery. In the restrictive context of rotational symmetry, this construction gives evidence in favor of Perelman's hope for a "canonically defined Ricci flow through singularities".

Curve shortening and the topology of closed geodesics on surfaces

We study "flat knot types" of geodesics on compact surfaces M^2. For every flat knot type and any Riemannian metric g we introduce a Conley index associated with the curve shortening flow on the space of immersed curves on M^2. We conclude existence of closed geodesics with prescribed flat knot types, provided the associated Conley index is nontrivial.
