A note on electrical and thermodynamic properties of Isolated Horizon

The electrical laws and Carnot cycle of Isolated Horizon (IH) are investigated in this paper. We establish the Ohm's law and Joule's law of an Isolated Horizon, and find that the conceptual picture of black holes (Membrane Paradigm) can also apply to this kind of quasi-local black holes. We also investigate the geometrical properties near a non-rotating IH, and find that under the first-order approximation of r, there exist a Killing vector and a Hamiltonian conjugate to it, so this vector is a physical observer. We calculate the energy as measured at infinity of a particle at rest outside a non-rotating IH, and use this result to construct a reversible Carnot cycle with the Isolated Horizon as a cold reservoir, which confirms the thermodynamic nature of Isolated Horizon.

General proof of the entropy principle for self-gravitating fluid in static spacetimes

We show that for any perfect fluid in a static spacetime, if the Einstein constraint equation is satisfied and the temperature of the fluid obeys Tolman's law, then the other components of Einstein's equation are implied by the assumption that the total entropy of the fluid achieves an extremum for fixed total particle number and for all variations of metric with certain boundary conditions. Conversely, one can show that the extrema of the total entropy of the fluid are implied by Einstein's equation. Compared to previous works on this issue, we do not require spherical symmetry for the spacetime. Our results suggest a general and solid connection between thermodynamics and general relativity.

Testing cosmic censorship conjecture near extremal black holes with cosmological constants

It has been shown previously that an extremal Reissner-Nordström or an extremal Kerr black hole cannot be overcharged or overspun by a test particle if radiative and self-force effects are neglected. In this paper, we consider extremal charged and rotating black holes with cosmological constants. By studying the motion of test particles, we find the following results: An extremal Reissner-Nordström anti-de Sitter (RN-AdS) black hole can be overcharged by a test particle but an extremal Reissner-Nordström de Sitter (RN-dS) black hole cannot be overcharged. We also show that both extrmal Kerr-de-Sitter (Kerr-dS) and Kerr-anti-de-Sitter (Kerr-AdS) black holes can be overspun by a test particle, implying a possible breakdown of the cosmic censorship conjecture. For the Kerr-AdS case, the overspinning requires that the energy of the particle be negative, a reminiscent of the Penrose process. In contrast to the extremal RN and Kerr black holes, in which cases the cosmic censorship is upheld, our results suggest some subtle relations between the cosmological constants and the comic censorship. We also discuss the effect of radiation reaction for the Kerr-dS case and find that the magnitude of energy loss due to gravitational radiation may not be enough to prevent the violation of the cosmic censorship.

Destroying extremal Kerr-Newman black holes with test particles

It has been shown that a nearly extremal black hole can be overcharged or overspun by a test particle if radiative and self-force effects are neglected, indicating that the cosmic censorship might fail. In contrast, the existing evidence in literature suggests that an extremal black hole cannot be overcharged or overspun in a similar process. In this paper, we show explicitly that even an exactly extremal black hole can be destroyed by a test particle, leading to a possible violation of the cosmic censorship. By considering higher order terms, which were neglected in previous analysis, we show that the violation is generic for any extremal Kerr-Newman black hole with nonvanishing charge and angular momentum. We also find that the allowed parameter range for the particle is very narrow, indicating that radiative and self-force effects should be considered and may prevent violation of the cosmic censorship.

A general maximum entropy principle for self-gravitating perfect fluid

We consider a self-gravitating system consisting of perfect fluid with spherical symmetry. Using the general expression of entropy density, we extremize the total entropy $S$ under the constraint that the total number of particles is fixed. We show that extrema of $S$ coincides precisely with the relativistic Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equation of hydrostatic equilibrium. Furthermore, we apply the maximum entropy principle to a charged perfect fluid and derive the generalized TOV equation. Our work provides a strong evidence for the fundamental relationship between general relativity and ordinary thermodynamics.

Particle collisions near the cosmological horizon of a Reissner-Nordström de Sitter black hole

It has recently been shown that black holes can act as particle accelerators and two particles can collide with arbitrarily high center-of-mass (CM) energy under certain critical conditions. In this paper, we investigate particle collisions outside a Reissner-Nordström de Sitter (RN-dS) black hole. We find that infinite CM energy can be produced near the cosmological horizon for generic spacetime configurations. Remarkably, such infinite CM energy does not require the black hole to be extremal, in contrast to spacetimes in the absence of cosmological constants. However, since the charge of an astrophysical body is negligible, the required charge to mass ratio of the particle is extremely higher than that of any elementary particle.

Non-extremal Kerr black holes as particle accelerators

It has been shown that extremal Kerr black holes can be used as particle accelerators and arbitrarily high energy may be obtained near the event horizon. We study particle collisions near the event horizon (outer horizon) and Cauchy horizon (inner horizon) of a non-extremal Kerr black hole. Firstly, we provide a general proof showing that particles cannot collide with arbitrarily high energies at the outter horizon. Secondly, we show that ultraenergetic collisions can occur near the inner horizon of a Kerr black hole with any spin parameter $a$.

Stability of Brans-Dicke thin shell wormholes

Recently, a class of spherically symmetric thin-shell wormholes in Brans-Dicke gravity have been introduced. Such wormholes can be supported by matter satisfying the weak energy condition (WEC). In this paper, we first obtain all the exact solutions satisfying the WEC. Then we show these solutions can be stable for certain parameters. A general requirement for stability is that $β^2>1$, which may imply that the speed of sound exceeds the speed of light.

On Newman-Penrose constants of stationary electrovacuum spacetimes

A theorem related to the Newman-Penrose constants is proven. The theorem states that all the Newman-Penrose constants of asymptotically flat, stationary, asymptotically algebraically special electrovacuum spacetimes are zero. Straightforward application of this theorem shows that all the Newman-Penrose constants of the Kerr-Newman spacetime must vanish.

Proof of the entropy bound on dynamical horizons

The entropy bound conjecture concerning black hole dynamical horizons is proved. The conjecture states, if a dynamical horizon, $D_H$, is bounded by two surfaces with areas of $A_B$ and $\abp$ ($\abp>A_B$), then the entropy, $S_D$, that crosses $D_H$ must satisfy $S_D\leq {1/4}(\abp-A_B)$. We show that this conjecture is implied by the generalized Bousso bound. Consequently, the generalized second law holds for dynamical horizons. Finally, we show that the lightlike bousso bound and its spacelike counterpart can be unified as one bound.

Collapsing and static thin massive charged dust shells in a Reissner-Nordström black hole background in higher dimensions

The problem of a spherically symmetric charged thin shell of dust collapsing gravitationally into a charged Reissner-Nordström black hole in $d$ spacetime dimensions is studied within the theory of general relativity. Static charged shells in such a background are also analyzed. First a derivation of the equation of motion of such a shell in a $d$-dimensional spacetime is given. Then a proof of the cosmic censorship conjecture in a charged collapsing framework is presented, and a useful constraint which leads to an upper bound for the rest mass of a charged shell with an empty interior is derived. It is also proved that a shell with total mass equal to charge, i.e., an extremal shell, in an empty interior, can only stay in neutral equilibrium outside its gravitational radius. This implies that it is not possible to generate a regular extremal black hole by placing an extremal dust thin shell within its own gravitational radius. Moreover, it is shown, for an empty interior, that the rest mass of the shell is limited from above. Then several types of behavior of oscillatory charged shells are studied. In the presence of a horizon, it is shown that an oscillatory shell always enters the horizon and reemerges in a new asymptotically flat region of the extended Reissner-Nordström spacetime. On the other hand, for an overcharged interior, i.e., a shell with no horizons, an example showing that the shell can achieve a stable equilibrium position is presented. The results presented have applications in brane scenarios with extra large dimensions, where the creation of tiny higher dimensional charged black holes in current particle accelerators might be a real possibility, and generalize to higher dimensions previous calculations on the dynamics of charged shells in four dimensions.

Can gravitational dynamics be obtained by diffeomorphism invariance of action?

It has recently been suggested that the gravitational dynamics could be obtained by requiring the action to be invariant under diffeomorphism transformations. We argue that the action constructed in usual way is automatically diffeomorphism invariant in nature, which thus invalidates this alternative perspective to obtain gravitational dynamics. Especially, we also show what is wrong with the technical derivation of gravitational dynamics in the alternative approach.

Tunneling Effect Near Weakly Isolated Horizon

The tunneling effect near a weakly isolated horizon (WIH) has been studied. By applying the null geodesic method of Parikh and Wilczek and Hamilton-Jacibi method of Angheben et al. to a weakly isolated horizon, we recover the semiclassical emission rate in the tunneling process. We show that the tunneling effect exists in a wide class of spacetimes admitting weakly isolated horizons. The general thermodynamic nature of WIH is then confirmed.

Charged shells in Lovelock gravity: Hamiltonian treatment and physical implications

Using a Hamiltonian treatment, charged thin shells in spherically symmetric spacetimes in d dimensional Lovelock-Maxwell theory are studied. The coefficients of the theory are chosen to obtain a sensible theory, with a negative cosmological constant appearing naturally. After writing the action and the Lagrangian for a spacetime comprised of an interior and an exterior regions, with a thin shell as a boundary in between, one finds the Hamiltonian using an ADM description. For spherically symmetric spacetimes, one reduces the relevant constraints. The dynamic and constraint equations are obtained. The vacuum solutions yield a division of the theory into two branches, d-2k-1>0 (which includes general relativity, Born-Infeld type theories) and d-2k-1=0 (which includes Chern-Simons type theories), where k gives the highest power of the curvature in the Lagrangian. An additional parameter, chi, gives the character of the vacuum solutions. For chi=1 the solutions have a black hole character. For chi=-1 the solutions have a totally naked singularity character. The integration through the thin shell takes care of the smooth junction. The subsequent analysis is divided into two cases: static charged thin shell configurations, and gravitationally collapsing charged dust shells. Physical implications are drawn: if such a large extra dimension scenario is correct, one can extract enough information from the outcome of those collapses as to know, not only the actual dimension of spacetime, but also which particular Lovelock gravity, is the correct one.

The Tolman-Bondi--Vaidya Spacetime: matching timelike dust to null dust

The Tolman-Bondi and Vaidya solutions are two solutions to Einstein equations which describe dust particles and null fluid, respectively. We show that it is possible to match the two solutions in one single spacetime, the Tolman-Bondi--Vaidya spacetime. The new spacetime is divided by a null surface with Tolman-Bondi dust on one side and Vaidya fluid on the other side. The differentiability of the spacetime is discussed. By constructing a specific solution, we show that the metric across the null surface can be at least $C^1$ and the stress-energy tensor is continuous.

Local conditions for the generalized covariant entropy bound

A set of sufficient conditions for the generalized covariant entropy bound given by Strominger and Thompson is as follows: Suppose that the entropy of matter can be described by an entropy current $s^a$. Let $k^a$ be any null vector along $L$ and $s\equiv -k^a s_a$. Then the generalized bound can be derived from the following conditions: (i) $s'\leq 2πT_{ab}k^ak^b$, where $s'=k^a\grad_a s$ and $T_{ab}$ is the stress energy tensor; (ii) on the initial 2-surface $B$, $s(0)\leq -{1/4}θ(0)$, where $θ$ is the expansion of $k^a$. We prove that condition (ii) alone can be used to divide a spacetime into two regions: The generalized entropy bound holds for all light sheets residing in the region where $s<-{1/4}θ$ and fails for those in the region where $s>-{1/4}θ$. We check the validity of these conditions in FRW flat universe and a scalar field spacetime. Some apparent violations of the entropy bounds in the two spacetimes are discussed. These holographic bounds are important in the formulation of the holographic principle.

The covariant entropy bound in gravitational collapse

We study the covariant entropy bound in the context of gravitational collapse. First, we discuss critically the heuristic arguments advanced by Bousso. Then we solve the problem through an exact model: a Tolman-Bondi dust shell collapsing into a Schwarzschild black hole. After the collapse, a new black hole with a larger mass is formed. The horizon, $L$, of the old black hole then terminates at the singularity. We show that the entropy crossing $L$ does not exceed a quarter of the area of the old horizon. Therefore, the covariant entropy bound is satisfied in this process.

Position space of Doubly Special Relativity

We consider three possible approaches to formulating coordinate transformations on position space associated with non-linear Lorentz transformations on momentum space. The first approach uses the definition of velocity and gives the standard Lorentz transformation. In the second method, we translate the behavior in momentum space into position space by means of Fourier transform. Under certain conditions, it also gives the standard Lorentz transformation on position space. The third approach investigates the covariance of the modified Klein-Gordon equation obtained from the dispersion relation.
