An algebraic model for rational ultracommutative rings

Given a global equivariant ultracommutative ring spectrum $E$ and inclusion $H\hookrightarrow G$ of finite groups, one may apply geometric fixed points to the norm $N_H^G E_H \to E_G$ to obtain what we call a \emph{geometric norm} $\Phi^H E \to \Phi^G E$. We prove that, together with inflations, these assemble into a functor $\Phi\colon\mathrm{UCom}_{\mathrm{fin}} \to \mathrm{Fun}(\mathrm{Span}(\mathcal{G},\mathcal{E},\mathcal{O}),\mathrm{CAlg})$, where $\mathrm{Span}(\mathcal{G},\mathcal{E},\mathcal{O})$ is the span category of finite connected groupoids with full backwards maps and faithful forwards maps, and that $\Phi$ restricts to an equivalence between full subcategories of rational objects. Central to our construction is a refinement of geometric fixed points to a natural transformation $\Phi\colon \mathrm{Sp}_\bullet\to\mathrm{Fun}(\mathrm{Orb}_\bullet^\simeq,\mathrm{Sp})$ which is compatible with restrictions and norms, and which restricts to an equivalence on full subcategories of rational objects. We explain how this may also be used to recover theorems of Barrero--Barthel--Pol--Strickland--Williamson and Wimmer on algebraic models for rational global spectra and normed $G$-commutative ring spectra respectively.

Free algebras via monoidal envelopes

For any morphism of $\infty$-operads $\mathcal{P} \to \mathcal{O}$, we show that the free $\mathcal{O}$-algebra on a $\mathcal{P}$-algebra admits an explicit formula as the colimit over the $\mathcal{O}$-monoidal envelope of $\mathcal{P}$, providing a new and simple proof of the existence of relative free $\mathcal{O}$-algebras.

Ambidextrous global spectra and tempered cohomology

We introduce generalizations of global equivariant spectra which encode globally equivariant cohomology theories equipped with additional transfers, such as the deflation maps present in equivariant topological $K$-theory. We call these $\mathcal{Q}$-ambidextrous global spectra, where $\mathcal{Q}$ is a parameter encoding which additional transfers one allows. As our main example, we prove that the tempered cohomology theory associated with an oriented $\mathbf{P}$-divisible group, constructed by Lurie, is represented by a $\pi$-ambidextrous global $\mathbf{E}_\infty$ ring spectrum, encoding transfers along all relatively $\pi$-finite maps of global spaces. This is established by means of a general parametrized decategorification process, perhaps of independent interest, that produces $\mathcal{Q}$-ambidextrous global spectra from suitable global families of stable $\infty$-categories. By allowing $\mathcal{Q}$ to vary, we are able to coherently encode the fact that non-invertible morphisms of oriented $\mathbf{P}$-divisible groups induce maps of tempered theories that only commute with certain transfers. With these $\pi$-ambidextrous enhancements in hand, we explore the fundamental properties of tempered theories as equivariant stable homotopy types. We construct a well-behaved $F$-global homology theory for any $\pi$-finite space $F$, with good base change properties. Taking $F = \mathbf{B} H$ for a finite group $H$, this establishes general base change results for the geometric fixed points of tempered theories. We use this to compute the $H$-geometric fixed points of tempered theories, showing that they vanish for $H$ nonabelian and admit a simple algebro-geometric model when $H$ is abelian, with identifiable blueshift properties.

Affineness and reconstruction in complex-periodic geometry

Working in a generic derived algebro-geometric context, we lay the foundations for the general study of affineness and local descendability. When applied to $\mathbf{E}_\infty$ rings equipped with the fpqc topology, these foundations give an $\infty$-category of spectral stacks, a viable functor-of-points alternative to Lurie's approach to nonconnective spectral algebraic geometry. Specializing further to spectral stacks over the moduli stack of oriented formal groups, we use chromatic homotopy theory to obtain a large class of $0$-affine stacks, generalizing Mathew--Meier's famous $0$-affineness result. We introduce a spectral refinement of Hopkins' stack construction of an $\mathbf{E}_\infty$ ring, and study when it provides an inverse to the global sections of a spectral stack. We use this to show that a large class of stacks, which we call reconstructible, are naturally determined by their global sections, including moduli stacks of oriented formal groups of bounded height and the moduli stack of oriented elliptic curves.

Universality of span 2-categories and the construction of 6-functor formalisms

Given an $\infty$-category $C$ equipped with suitable wide subcategories $I, P \subset E\subset C$, we show that the $(\infty,2)$-category $\text{S}{\scriptstyle\text{PAN}}_2(C,E)_{P,I}$ of higher (or iterated) spans defined by Haugseng has the universal property that 2-functors $\text{S}{\scriptstyle\text{PAN}}_2(C,E)_{P,I} \to \mathbb D$ correspond precisely to $(I, P)$-biadjointable functors $C^\text{op} \to \mathbb D$, i.e. functors $F$ where $F(i)$ for $i \in I$ admits a left adjoint and $F(p)$ for $p \in P$ admits a right adjoint satisfying various Beck-Chevalley conditions. We also extend this universality to the symmetric monoidal and lax symmetric monoidal settings. This provides a conceptual explanation for - and an independent proof of - the Mann-Liu-Zheng construction of 6-functor formalisms from suitable functors $C^\text{op}\to\text{CAlg}(\text{Cat})$.

Parametrized (higher) semiadditivity and the universality of spans

Semiadditivity of an $\infty$-category, i.e. the existence of biproducts, provides it with useful algebraic structure in the form of a canonical enrichment in commutative monoids. This ultimately comes from the fact that the $\infty$-category of commutative monoids is the universal semiadditive $\infty$-category equipped with a finite-product-preserving functor to spaces, or equivalently that the $(2,1)$-category of spans of finite sets is the universal semiadditive $\infty$-category. In this article, we prove a vast generalization of these facts in the context of parametrized semiadditivity, a notion we define using Hopkins-Lurie's framework of ambidexterity. This simultaneously generalizes a result of Harpaz for higher semiadditivity and a result of Nardin for equivariant semiadditivity. We deduce that every parametrized semiadditive $\infty$-category is canonically enriched in Mackey functors/sheaves with transfers. As an application, we reprove the Mackey functor description of global spectra first obtained by the second-named author and generalize it to $G$-global spectra. Moreover, we obtain universal characterizations of the $\infty$-categories of $\mathbb Z$-valued $G$-Mackey profunctors and of quasi-finitely genuine $G$-spectra as studied by Kaledin and Krause-McCandless-Nikolaus, respectively.

Homotopical commutative rings and bispans

We prove that commutative semirings in a cartesian closed presentable $\infty$-category, as defined by Groth, Gepner, and Nikolaus, are equivalent to product-preserving functors from the $(2,1)$-category of bispans of finite sets. In other words, we identify the latter as the Lawvere theory for commutative semirings in the $\infty$-categorical context. This implies that connective commutative ring spectra can be described as grouplike product-preserving functors from bispans of finite sets to spaces. A key part of the proof is a localization result for $\infty$-categories of spans, and more generally for $\infty$-categories with factorization systems, that may be of independent interest.

On the derived Tate curve and global smooth Tate $K$-theory

The interplay between equivariant stable homotopy theory and spectral algebraic geometry is used to construct a derived Tate curve over $\mathrm{KU}((q))$, a lift of the classical elliptic curve of Tate over $\mathbf{Z}((q))$. Applications of both an algebro-geometric and a topological flavour follow. First, we construct a spectral algebro-geometric model for the compactification of the moduli stack of oriented elliptic curves, giving a canonical choice of holomorphic topological $q$-expansion map. Then we define globally equivariant forms of Tate $K$-theory $\mathbf{KO}((q))$ and $\mathbf{KU}((q))$, and equip them with globally equivariant meromorphic topological $q$-expansion maps from global topological modular forms. Finally, we explore $C_2$-equivariant versions of global Tate $K$-theory and connect them with $C_2$-equivariant global topological modular forms with level structures.

Norms in equivariant homotopy theory

We show that the $\infty$-category of normed algebras in genuine $G$-spectra, as introduced by Bachmann-Hoyois, is modelled by strictly commutative algebras in $G$-symmetric spectra for any finite group $G$. We moreover provide an analogous description of Schwede's ultra-commutative global ring spectra in higher categorical terms. Using these new descriptions, we exhibit the $\infty$-category of ultra-commutative global ring spectra as a partially lax limit of the $\infty$-categories of genuine $G$-spectra for varying $G$, in analogy with the non-multiplicative comparison of Nardin, Pol, and the second author. Along the way, we establish various new results in parametrized higher algebra, which we hope to be of independent interest.

Parametrised functor calculus: excision, spheres, and semiadditivity

We lay down the foundations of a theory of parametrised functor calculus, generalising parts of the functor calculus of Goodwillie. We introduce the notion of excisable posets and develop a theory of excisive approximations in this context. As an application, we introduce two different excisable posets when parametrising over an atomic orbital category. By comparing the notions of excisiveness for these two posets, we relate the invertibility of certain spheres with Nardin's notion of parametrised semiadditivity, generalising Wirthmüller's classical result in equivariant homotopy theory for finite groups.

The Adams isomorphism revisited

We establish abstract Adams isomorphisms in an arbitrary equivariantly presentable equivariantly semiadditive global category. This encompasses the well-known Adams isomorphism in equivariant stable homotopy theory, and applies more generally in the settings of $G$-Mackey functors, $G$-global homotopy theory, and equivariant Kasparov categories.

Normed equivariant ring spectra and higher Tambara functors

In this paper we extend equivariant infinite loop space theory to take into account multiplicative norms: For every finite group $G$, we construct a multiplicative refinement of the comparison between the $\infty$-categories of connective genuine $G$-spectra and space-valued Mackey functors, first proven by Guillou-May, and use this to give a description of connective normed equivariant ring spectra as space-valued Tambara functors. In more detail, we first introduce and study a general notion of homotopy-coherent normed (semi)rings, and identify these with product-preserving functors out of a corresponding $\infty$-category of bispans. In the equivariant setting, this identifies space-valued Tambara functors with normed algebras with respect to a certain normed monoidal structure on grouplike $G$-commutative monoids in spaces. We then show that the latter is canonically equivalent to the normed monoidal structure on connective $G$-spectra given by the Hill-Hopkins-Ravenel norms. Combining our comparison with results of Elmanto-Haugseng and Barwick-Glasman-Mathew-Nikolaus, we produce normed ring structures on equivariant algebraic K-theory spectra.

Global spaces and the homotopy theory of stacks

We show that the $\infty$-category of global spaces is equivalent to the homotopy localization of the $\infty$-category of sheaves on the site of separated differentiable stacks, following a philosophy proposed by Gepner-Henriques. We further prove that this $\infty$-category of sheaves is a cohesive $\infty$-topos and that it fully faithfully contains the singular-cohesive $\infty$-topos of Sati-Schreiber.

Global 2-rings and genuine refinements

We introduce the notion of a naive global 2-ring: a functor from the opposite of the $\infty$-category of global spaces to presentably symmetric monoidal stable $\infty$-categories. By passing to global sections, every naive global 2-ring decategorifies to a multiplicative cohomology theory on global spaces, i.e. a naive global ring. We suggest when a naive global 2-ring deserves to be called \emph{genuine}. As evidence, we associate to such a global 2-ring a family of equivariant cohomology theories which satisfy a version of the change of group axioms introduced by Ginzburg, Kapranov and Vasserot. We further show that the decategorified multiplicative global cohomology theory associated to a genuine global $2$-ring canonically refines to an $\mathbb{E}_\infty$-ring object in global spectra. As we show, two interesting examples of genuine global 2-rings are given by quasi-coherent sheaves on the torsion points of an oriented spectral elliptic curve and Lurie's theory of tempered local systems. In particular, we obtain global spectra representing equivariant elliptic cohomology and tempered cohomology.

Global homotopy theory via partially lax limits

We provide new $\infty$-categorical models for unstable and stable global homotopy theory. We use the notion of partially lax limits to formalize the idea that a global object is a collection of $G$-objects, one for each compact Lie group $G$, which are compatible with the restriction-inflation functors. More precisely, we show that the $\infty$-category of global spaces is equivalent to a partially lax limit of the functor sending a compact Lie group $G$ to the $\infty$-category of $G$-spaces. We also prove the stable version of this result, showing that the $\infty$-category of global spectra is equivalent to the partially lax limit of a diagram of $G$-spectra. Finally, the techniques employed in the previous cases allow us to describe the $\infty$-category of proper $G$-spectra for a Lie group $G$, as a limit of a diagram of $H$-spectra for $H$ running over all compact subgroups of $G$.

Lax monoidal adjunctions, two-variable fibrations and the calculus of mates

We provide a calculus of mates for functors to the $\infty$-category of $\infty$-categories and extend Lurie's unstraightening equivalences to show that (op)lax natural transformations correspond to maps of (co)cartesian fibrations that do not necessarily preserve (co)cartesian edges. As a sample application we obtain an equivalence between lax symmetric monoidal structures on right adjoint functors and oplax symmetric monoidal structures on the left adjoint functors between symmetric monoidal $\infty$-categories that is compatible with both horizontal and vertical composition of such structures. As the technical heart of the paper we study various new types of fibrations over a product of two $\infty$-categories. In particular, we show how they can be dualised over one of the two factors and how they encode functors out of the Gray tensor product of $(\infty, 2)$-categories.

Globalizing and stabilizing global $\infty$-categories

We consider the question of cocompleting partially presentable parametrized $\infty$-categories in the sense of arXiv:2307.11001. As our main result we show that in certain cases one may compute such relative cocompletions via a very explicit formula given in terms of partially lax limits. We then apply this to equivariant homotopy theory, building on the work of op. cit. and arXiv:2301.08240, to conclude that the global $\infty$-category of globally equivariant spectra is the relative cocompletion of the global $\infty$-category of equivariant spectra. Evaluating at a group $G$ we obtain a description of the $\infty$-category of $G$-global spectra as a partially lax limit, extending the main result of arXiv:2206.01556 for finite groups to $G$-global homotopy theory. Finally we investigate the question of stabilizing global $\infty$-categories by inverting the action of representation spheres, and deduce a second universal property for the global $\infty$-category of globally equivariant spectra, similar to that of arXiv:2302.06207.

Two-variable fibrations, factorisation systems and $\infty$-categories of spans

We prove a universal property for $\infty$-categories of spans in the generality of Barwick's adequate triples, explicitly describe the cocartesian fibration corresponding to the span functor, and show that the latter restricts to a self-equivalence on the class of orthogonal adequate triples, which we introduce for this purpose. As applications of the machinery we develop we give a quick proof of Barwick's unfurling theorem, show that an orthogonal factorisation system arises from a cartesian fibration if and only if it forms an adequate triple (generalising work of Lanari), extend the description of dual (co)cartesian fibrations by Barwick, Glasman and Nardin to two-variable fibrations, explicitly describe parametrised adjoints (extending work of Torii), identify the orthofibration classifying the mapping category functor of an $(\infty,2)$-category (building on work of Abellán Garcia and Stern), formally identify the unstraightenings of the identity functor on the $\infty$-category of $\infty$-categories with the (op)lax under-categories of a point, and deduce a certain naturality property of the Yoneda embedding (answering a question of Clausen).
