On the abelianization of derived categories and a negative solution to Rosicky's problem

We prove for a large family of rings R that their lambda-pure global dimension is greater than one for each infinite regular cardinal lambda. This answers in negative a problem posed by Rosicky. The derived categories of such rings then do not satisfy the Adams lambda-representability for morphisms for any lambda. Equivalently, they are examples of well generated triangulated categories whose lambda-abelianization in the sense of Neeman is not a full functor for any lambda. In particular we show that given a compactly generated triangulated category, one may not be able to find a Rosicky functor among the lambda-abelianization functors.

Flat Mittag-Leffler modules over countable rings

We show that over any ring, the double Ext-orthogonal class to all flat Mittag-Leffler modules contains all countable direct limits of flat Mittag-Leffler modules. If the ring is countable, then the double orthogonal class consists precisely of all flat modules and we deduce, using a recent result of Šaroch and Trlifaj, that the class of flat Mittag-Leffler modules is not precovering in Mod-R unless R is right perfect.

Equivalences induced by infinitely generated tilting modules

We generalize Brenner and Butler's Theorem as well as Happel's Theorem on the equivalences induced by a finitely generated tilting module over artin algebras, to the case of an infinitely generated tilting module over an arbitrary associative ring establishing the equivalences induced between subcategories of module categories and also at the level of derived categories.

Cotorsion pairs generated by modules of bounded projective dimension

We apply the theory of cotorsion pairs to study closure properties of classes of modules with finite projective dimension with respect to direct limit operations and to filtrations. We also prove that if the ring is an order in an $\aleph_0$-noetherian ring Q of small finitistic dimension 0, then the cotorsion pair generated by the modules of projective dimension at most one is of finite type if and only if Q has big finitistic dimension 0. This applies, for example, to semiprime Goldie rings and Cohen Macaulay noetherian commutative rings.

A solution to the Baer splitting problem

Let R be a commutative domain. We prove that an R-module B is projective if and only if Ext^1(B,T)=0 for any torsion module T. This answers in the affirmative a question raised by Kaplansky in 1962.
