On the use of continuous wavelet analysis for modal identification

This paper reviews two different uses of the continuous wavelet transform for modal identification purposes. The properties of the wavelet transform, mainly energetic, allow to emphasize or filter the main information within measured signals and thus facilitate the modal parameter identification especially when mechanical systems exhibit modal coupling and/or relatively strong damping.

A non-linear hardening model based on two coupled internal hardening variables: formulation and implementation

An elasto-plasticity model with coupled hardening variables of strain type is presented. In the theoretical framework of generalized associativity, the formulation of this model is based on the introduction of two hardening variables with a coupled evolution. Even if the corresponding hardening rules are linear, the stress-strain hardening evolution is non-linear. The numerical implementation by a standard return mapping algorithm is discussed and some numerical simulations of cyclic behaviour in the univariate case are presented.

On the derivation of structural models with general thermomechanical prestress

The vibrating behaviour of thin structures is affected by prestress states. Hence, the effects of thermal prestress are important research subjects in view of ambient vibration monitoring of civil structures. The interaction between prestress, geometrically non-linear behaviour, as well as damping and its coupling with the aforementioned phenomena has to be taken into account for a comprehensive understanding of the structural behaviour. Since the literature on this subject lacks a clear procedure to derive models of thin prestressed and damped structures from 3D continuum mechanics, this paper presents a new derivation of models for thin structures accounting for generic prestress, moderate rotations and viscous damping. Although inspired by classical approaches, the proposed procedure is quite different, because of (i) the definition of a modified Hu-Washizu (H-W) functional, accounting for stress constraints associated with Lagrange multipliers, in order to derive lower-dimensional models in a convenient way; (ii) an original definition of a (mechanical and thermal) strain measure and a rotation measure enabling one to identify the main terms in the strain energy and to derive a cascade of lower-dimensional models (iii) a new definition of "strain-rotation domains" providing a clear interpretation of the classical assumptions of "small perturbations" and "small strains and moderate rotations"; (iv) the introduction of a pseudo-potential with stress constraints to account for viscous damping. The proposed procedure is applied to thin beams.

Pseudo-potentials and loading surfaces for an endochronic plasticity theory with isotropic damage

The endochronic theory, developed in the early 70s, allows the plastic behavior of materials to be represented by introducing the notion of intrinsic time. With different viewpoints, several authors discussed the relationship between this theory and the classical theory of plasticity. Two major differences are the presence of plastic strains during unloading phases and the absence of an elastic domain. Later, the endochronic plasticity theory was modified in order to introduce the effect of damage. In the present paper, a basic endochronic model with isotropic damage is formulated starting from the postulate of strain equivalence. Unlike the previous similar analyses, in this presentation the formal tools chosen to formulate the model are those of convex analysis, often used in classical plasticity: namely pseudopotentials, indicator functions, subdifferentials, etc. As a result, the notion of loading surface for an endochronic model of plasticity with damage is investigated and an insightful comparison with classical models is made possible. A damage pseudopotential definition allowing a very general damage evolution is given.

Lateral vibration of footbridges under crowd-loading: Continuous crowd modeling approach

In this paper, a simple 1D crowd model is proposed, which aim is to properly describe the crowd-flow phenomena occurring when pedestrians walk on a flexible footbridge. The crowd is assumed to behave like a continuous compressible fluid and the pedestrian flow is modeled in a 1-D framework using the (total) mass (of pedestrians) conservation equation. This crowd model is then coupled with a simple model for the dynamical behavior of the footbridge and an optimized modeling of synchronization effects is performed. Numerical simulations are presented to show some preliminary results.

Endochronic theory, non-linear kinematic hardening rule and generalized plasticity: a new interpretation based on generalized normality assumption

A simple way to define the flow rules of plasticity models is the assumption of generalized normality associated with a suitable pseudo-potential function. This approach, however, is not usually employed to formulate endochronic theory and non-linear kinematic (NLK) hardening rules as well as generalized plasticity models. In this paper, generalized normality is used to give a new formulation of these classes of models. As a result, a suited pseudo-potential is introduced for endochronic models and a non-standard description of NLK hardening and generalized plasticity models is also provided. This new formulation allows for an effective investigation of the relationships between these three classes of plasticity models.

Instantaneous identification of Bouc-Wen-type hysteretic systems from seismic response data

This paper presents a technique for identification of non-linear hysteretic systems subjected to non-stationary loading. In the numerical simulations, a Bouc-Wen model was chosen for its ability to represent the properties of a wide class of real hysteretic systems. The parameters of the model are computed instantaneously by approximating the internal restoring force surface through an "ad hoc" polynomial basis. Instantaneous estimates result from time-varying spectra of the response signals. A numerical application of interest to earthquake engineering is finally reported.
