Boundedness in a chemotaxis system with consumed chemoattractant and produced chemorepellent

We study this zero-flux attraction-repulsion chemotaxis model, with linear and superlinear production $g$ for the chemorepellent and sublinear rate $f$ for the chemoattractant: \begin{equation}\label{problem_abstract} \tag{$\Diamond$} \begin{cases} u_t= Δu - χ\nabla \cdot (u \nabla v)+ξ\nabla \cdot (u \nabla w) & \text{ in } Ω\times (0,T_{max}),\\ v_t=Δv-f(u)v & \text{ in } Ω\times (0,T_{max}),\\ 0= Δw - δw + g(u)& \text{ in } Ω\times (0,T_{max}). %u(x,0)=u_0(x), \; v(x,0)=v_0(x) & x \in \barΩ. \end{cases} \end{equation} In this problem, $Ω$ is a bounded and smooth domain of $\R^n$, for $n\geq 1$, $χ,ξ,δ>0$, $f(u)$ and $g(u)$ reasonably regular functions generalizing the prototypes $f(u)=K u^α$ and $g(u)=γu^l$, with $K,γ>0$ and proper $ α, l>0$. Once it is indicated that any sufficiently smooth $u(x,0)=u_0(x)\geq 0$ and $v(x,0)=v_0(x)\geq 0$ produce a unique classical and nonnegative solution $(u,v,w)$ to \eqref{problem_abstract}, which is defined in $Ω\times (0,T_{max})$, we establish that for any such $(u_0,v_0)$, the life span $\TM=\infty$ and $u, v$ and $w$ are uniformly bounded in $Ω\times (0,\infty)$, (i) for $l=1$, $n\in \{1,2\}$, $α\in (0,\frac{1}{2}+\frac{1}{n})\cap (0,1)$ and any $ξ>0$, (ii) for $l=1$, $n\geq 3$, $α\in (0,\frac{1}{2}+\frac{1}{n})$ and $ξ$ larger than a quantity depending on $χ\lVert v_0 \rVert_{L^\infty(Ω)}$, (iii) for $l>1$ any $ξ>0$, and in any dimensional settings. Finally, an indicative analysis about the effect by logistic and repulsive actions on chemotactic phenomena is proposed by comparing the results herein derived for the linear production case with those in \cite{LankeitWangConsumptLogistic}.

Boundedness for a fully parabolic Keller-Segel model with sublinear segregation and superlinear aggregation

This work deals with a fully parabolic chemotaxis model with nonlinear production and chemoattractant. The problem is formulated on a bounded domain and, depending on a specific interplay between the coefficients associated to such production and chemoattractant, we establish that the related initial-boundary value problem has a unique classical solution which is uniformly bounded in time. To be precise, we study this zero-flux problem \begin{equation}\label{problem_abstract} \tag{$\Diamond$} \begin{cases} u_t= Δu - \nabla \cdot (f(u) \nabla v) & \text{ in } Ω\times (0,T_{max}),\\ v_t=Δv-v+g(u) & \text{ in } Ω\times (0,T_{max}),\\ \end{cases} \end{equation} where $Ω$ is a bounded and smooth domain of $\mathbb{R}^n$, for $n\geq 2$, and $f(u)$ and $g(u)$ are reasonably regular functions generalizing, respectively, the prototypes $f(u)=u^α$ and $g(u)=u^l$, with proper $α, l>0$. After having shown that any sufficiently smooth $ u(x,0)=u_0(x)\geq 0, \, v(x,0)=v_0(x)\geq 0$ emanate a unique classical and nonnegative solution $(u,v)$ to problem \eqref{problem_abstract}, which is defined on $Ω\times (0,T_{max})$ with $T_{max}$ denoting the maximum time of existence, we establish that for any $l\in (0,\frac{2}{n})$ and $\frac{2}{n}\leq α<1+\frac{1}{n}-\frac{l}{2}$, $T_{max}=\infty$ and $u$ and $v$ are actually uniformly bounded in time. This paper is in line with the contribution by Horstmann and Winkler, moreover, extends the result by Liu and Tao. Indeed, in the first work it is proved that for $g(u)=u$ the value $α=\frac{2}{n}$ represents the critical blow-up exponent to the model, whereas in the second, for $f(u)=u$, corresponding to $α=1$, boundedness of solutions is shown under the assumption $0<l<\frac{2}{n}.$

Existence and multiplicity of positive solutions for the fractional Laplacian under subcritical or critical growth

We study a Dirichlet type problem for an equation involving the fractional Laplacian and a reaction term subject to either subcritical or critical growth conditions, depending on a positive parameter. Applying a critical point result of Bonanno, we prove existence of one or two positive solutions as soon as the parameter lies under a (explicitly determined) threshold. As an application, we find two positive solutions for a fractional Brezis-Nirenberg problem.

Extremal constant sign solutions and nodal solutions for the fractional p-Laplacian

We study a pseudo-differential equation driven by the degenerate fractional p-Laplacian, under Dirichlet type conditions in a smooth domain. First we show that the solution set within the order interval given by a sub-supersolution pair is nonempty, directed, and compact, hence endowed with extremal elements. Then, we prove existence of a smallest positive, a biggest negative and a nodal solution, combining variational methods with truncation techniques.

Minimization and Steiner symmetry of the first eigenvalue for a fractional eigenvalue problem with indefinite weight

Let $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N$, $N\geq 2$, be an open bounded connected set. We consider the fractional weighted eigenvalue problem $(-Δ)^s u =λρu$ in $Ω$ with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition, where $(-Δ)^s$, $s\in (0,1)$, is the fractional Laplacian operator, $λ\in \mathbb{R}$ and $ ρ\in L^\infty(Ω)$. We study weak* continuity, convexity and Gâteaux differentiability of the map $ρ\mapsto1/λ_1(ρ)$, where $λ_1(ρ)$ is the first positive eigenvalue. Moreover, denoting by $\mathcal{G}(ρ_0)$ the class of rearrangements of $ρ_0$, we prove the existence of a minimizer of $λ_1(ρ)$ when $ρ$ varies on $\mathcal{G}(ρ_0)$. Finally, we show that, if $Ω$ is Steiner symmetric, then every minimizer shares the same symmetry.

Nonlinear Dirichlet problem for the nonlocal anisotropic operator $L_K$

In this paper we study an equation driven by a nonlocal anisotropic operator with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. We find at least three non trivial solutions: one positive, one negative and one of unknown sign, using variational methods and Morse theory. We present some results about regularity of solutions as $L^{\infty}$-bound and Hopf's lemma, for the latter we first consider a non negative nonlinearity and then a strictly negative one. Moreover, we prove that, for the corresponding functional, local minimizers with respect to a $C^0$-topology weighted with a suitable power of the distance from the boundary are actually local minimizers in the $X(Ω)$-topology.

Strict monotonicity and unique continuation for general non-local eigenvalue problems

We consider the weighted eigenvalue problem for a general non-local pseudo-differential operator, depending on a bounded weight function. For such problem, we prove that strict (decreasing) monotonicity of the eigenvalues with respect to the weight function is equivalent to the unique continuation property of eigenfunctions. In addition, we discuss some unique continuation results for the special case of the fractional Laplacian.
