Prospects for an experiment to measure $BR(K_L\rightarrow π^0ν\barν)$ at the CERN SpS

We are investigating the feasibility of performing a measurement of $BR(K_L\rightarrowπ^0ν\barν)$ using a high-energy secondary neutral beam at the CERN SPS in a successor experiment to NA62. The timescale would require many years; we assume that the experiment would be ready at the start of LHC Run 4. Some preliminary conclusions from our feasibility studies, design challenges faced and sensitivity obtainable for the measurement are here presented.

$K^+\rightarrow π^+ν\barν$ decay and NP searches at NA62

$K\rightarrow πν\barν$ is one of the theoretically cleanest meson decay where to look for indirect effects of new physics complementary to LHC searches. The NA62 experiment at CERN SPS is designed to measure the branching ratio of the $K^+\rightarrow π^+ν\barν$ decay with 10\% precision. After commissioning, in 2016 first data set good for physics has been collected. The data taking is foreseen till the LS2 at the end of 2018. The analysis method has been tested with 5\% of the full 2016 statistics. Results obtained with this subsample will be shown. The status of the experiment will be reviewed, and prospects will be presented, together with a mention to the broader NA62 physics program.

Recent results and prospects for NA62 experiment

The $K^+\rightarrow π^+ ν\bar ν$ decay is theoretically one of the cleanest meson decays and so a good place to look for indirect effects of new physics complementary to LHC searches. The NA62 experiment at CERN is designed to measure the branching ratio of this decay with 10\% precision. NA62 was commissioned in October 2014, took data in pilot runs in 2014 and 2015. The NA62 experimental setup is illustrated and data quality is reported.

The NA62 Experiment at CERN

The main physics goal of the NA62 experiment at CERN is to precisely measure the branching ratio of the kaon rare decay $K^+\rightarrow π^+ ν\barν$. This decay is strongly suppressed in the Standard Model and its branching ratio is theoretically calculated with high accuracy. The NA62 experiment is designed to measure this decay rate with an uncertainty better than 10\%. The measurement can be a good probe of new physics phenomena, which can alter the SM decay rate. The NA62 experiment has been successfully launched in October 2014. In this document, after an introduction to the theoretical framework, the NA62 experimental setup is described and a first look at the pilot run data is reported.
