Lattice artefacts in SU(3) lattice gauge theory with a mixed fundamental and adjoint plaquette action

We investigated SU(3) lattice gauge theory with a fundamental and adjoint plaquette term in the action. The purpose is to test whether the choice of a negative adjoint coupling can reduce lattice artefacts and improve the scaling b ehaviour. To this end, we have studied the finite temperature phase transition, the static potential and the mass of the 0^{++} glueball. We found that indeed the lattice artefacts in e.g. m_{0^{++}}/T_c can be reduced considerably compared with the pure Wilson (fundamental) gauge action at the same lattice spacing.

Universality and scaling behavior of RG gauge actions

We study universality and scaling properties of RG gauge actions (Iwasaki and DBW2). In the first part we consider the critical temperature T_{c} and compute the reference energy scale r_{0} for critical couplings β_{c} corresponding to N_{t}=3,4,6,8. The universality of T_{c}r_{0} between Iwasaki and Wilson action is confirmed and the scaling behavior of the Iwasaki action is found to be better than the one for the Wilson action. The results for the DBW2 action show larger lattice artefacts. A continuum value T_{c}r_{0}=0.7498(50) is extracted. We compute also the glueball masses for the states 0^{++} and 2^{++}, investigate the scaling of m_{0^{++}}r_{0} and m_{2^{++}}r_{0} and point out practical problems which are due to the violation of positivity present in the RG actions.

The static quark potential and scaling behavior of SU(3) l attice Yang-Mills theory

The potential between a static quark and antiquark in pure SU(3) Yang-Mills theory is evaluated non-perturbatively through computations on the lattice in the region from short to intermediate distances (0.05 fm < r < 0.8 fm). In the high energy regime the results are compared with the parameter-free prediction of perturbation theory obtained by solving the Renormalization Group equation at two and three loops. The choice of the renormalization scheme to define a running coupling turns out to be important for the accuracy of the perturbative prediction: by obtaining the running coupling through the force, perturbation theory is applicable up to alpha ~ 0.3, while from the static potential only up to alpha ~ 0.15. In the region where perturbation is supposed to be reliable, no large unexpected non-perturbative term is observed. In the second part of this work, universality and scaling behavior of different formulations of Yang-Mills theory on the lattice are discussed, in particular the Iwasaki and DBW2 actions. The deconfinement temperature T_c*r0 and the glueball masses (m_0++)*r0, (m_2++)*r0 are analyzed. Particular attention is dedicated to the violation of physical positivity which occur in these actions and the consequences in the extraction of physical quantities from Euclidean correlation functions.

Universality and RG-improved gauge actions

The reference energy scale r_0 is evaluated for RG-improved Iwasaki and DBW2 gauge actions (N_f = 0), at values of the deconfinement coupling beta_c corresponding to N_t = 3,4,6,8. The universality of r_0 T_c between Iwasa ki and Wilson action is confirmed; the scaling behaviour and the influence of th e violation of positivity in the extraction of effective masses are investigated.

The N_f=0 heavy quark potential and perturbation theory

The potential of a static quark-antiquark pair is studied in the range 0.05 fm $<$ r $<$ 0.8 fm, employing a sequence of lattices up to 64^4. The continuum quantities are evaluated by extrapolation of the data at finite lattice spacing. The results are compared with the perturbation theory predictions obtained from the solution of the renormalization group equation for the coupling. The renormalization scheme must be chosen carefully. No evidence for large non-perturbative effects at short distances is seen.

Testing perturbation theory on the nf=0 static quark potential

The perturbative expansion of static force and potential is reanalyzed concerning its practical applicability. A well behaved perturbative prediction is given by the integration of the renormalization group equation for the coupling $α_{qq}(μ=1/r)=(C_f)^{-1} r^2 F(r)$. Since the Lambda-parameter of the $\nf=0$ theory is known from previous work, the perturbative prediction contains no free parameter. It is confronted with recent non-perturbative results. For $α< 0.3$ where the truncation error of the perturbative expression is naively estimated to be moderate, it is really quite accurate and large ``non-perturbative terms'' are excluded.

The Nf=0 heavy quark potential from short to intermediate distances

We study the potential of a static quark anti-quark pair in the range 0.05fm \leq r \leq 0.8fm, employing a sequence of lattices up to 64^4. Lattice artifacts in potential and force are investigated theoretically as well as numerically and continuum quantities are obtained by extrapolation of the results at finite lattice spacing. Consistency of the numerical results with the form of scaling violations predicted by an analysis `a la Symanzik is found. The scale r_0/a is determined for the Wilson action up to beta=6.92.
