Extending the Chemical Reach of the H3 Survey: Detailed Abundances of the Dwarf-galaxy Stellar Stream Wukong/LMS-1

We present the first detailed chemical-abundance analysis of stars from the dwarf-galaxy stellar stream Wukong/LMS-1 covering a wide metallicity range ($-3.5 < \rm[Fe/H] \lesssim -1.3$). We find abundance patterns that are effectively indistinguishable from the bulk of Indus and Jhelum, a pair of smaller stellar streams proposed to be dynamically associated with Wukong/LMS-1. We confirmed a carbon-enhanced metal-poor star ($\rm[C/Fe] > +0.7$ and $\rm[Fe/H] \sim -2.9$) in Wukong/LMS-1 with strong enhancements in Sr, Y, and Zr, which is peculiar given its solar-level [Ba/Fe]. Wukong/LMS-1 stars have high abundances of $α$ elements up to $\rm[Fe/H] \gtrsim -2$, which is expected for relatively massive dwarfs. Towards the high-metallicity end, Wukong/LMS-1 becomes $α$-poor, revealing that it probably experienced fairly standard chemical evolution. We identified a pair of N- and Na-rich stars in Wukong/LMS-1, reminiscent of multiple populations in globular clusters. This indicates that this dwarf galaxy contained at least one globular cluster that was completely disrupted in addition to two intact ones previously known to be associated with Wukong/LMS-1, which is possibly connected to similar evidence found in Indus. From these $\geq$3 globular clusters, we estimate the total mass of Wukong/LMS-1 to be ${\approx}10^{10} M_\odot$, representing ${\sim}1$% of the present-day Milky Way. Finally, the [Eu/Mg] ratio in Wukong/LMS-1 continuously increases with metallicity, making this the first example of a dwarf galaxy where the production of $r$-process elements is clearly dominated by delayed sources, presumably neutron-star mergers.

Increasing Transparency of Reinforcement Learning using Shielding for Human Preferences and Explanations

The adoption of Reinforcement Learning (RL) in several human-centred applications provides robots with autonomous decision-making capabilities and adaptability based on the observations of the operating environment. In such scenarios, however, the learning process can make robots' behaviours unclear and unpredictable to humans, thus preventing a smooth and effective Human-Robot Interaction (HRI). As a consequence, it becomes crucial to avoid robots performing actions that are unclear to the user. In this work, we investigate whether including human preferences in RL (concerning the actions the robot performs during learning) improves the transparency of a robot's behaviours. For this purpose, a shielding mechanism is included in the RL algorithm to include human preferences and to monitor the learning agent's decisions. We carried out a within-subjects study involving 26 participants to evaluate the robot's transparency in terms of Legibility, Predictability, and Expectability in different settings. Results indicate that considering human preferences during learning improves Legibility with respect to providing only Explanations, and combining human preferences with explanations elucidating the rationale behind the robot's decisions further amplifies transparency. Results also confirm that an increase in transparency leads to an increase in the safety, comfort, and reliability of the robot. These findings show the importance of transparency during learning and suggest a paradigm for robotic applications with human in the loop.

Proceeding of the 1st Workshop on Social Robots Personalisation At the crossroads between engineering and humanities (CONCATENATE)

Nowadays, robots are expected to interact more physically, cognitively, and socially with people. They should adapt to unpredictable contexts alongside individuals with various behaviours. For this reason, personalisation is a valuable attribute for social robots as it allows them to act according to a specific user's needs and preferences and achieve natural and transparent robot behaviours for humans. If correctly implemented, personalisation could also be the key to the large-scale adoption of social robotics. However, achieving personalisation is arduous as it requires us to expand the boundaries of robotics by taking advantage of the expertise of various domains. Indeed, personalised robots need to analyse and model user interactions while considering their involvement in the adaptative process. It also requires us to address ethical and socio-cultural aspects of personalised HRI to achieve inclusive and diverse interaction and avoid deception and misplaced trust when interacting with the users. At the same time, policymakers need to ensure regulations in view of possible short-term and long-term adaptive HRI. This workshop aims to raise an interdisciplinary discussion on personalisation in robotics. It aims at bringing researchers from different fields together to propose guidelines for personalisation while addressing the following questions: how to define it - how to achieve it - and how it should be guided to fit legal and ethical requirements.

All-sky Kinematics and Chemistry of Monoceros Stellar Overdensity

We explore the kinematic and chemical properties of Monoceros stellar overdensity by combining data from 2MASS, WISE, APOGEE, and $\text{Gaia}$. Monoceros is a structure located towards the Galactic anticenter and close to the disk. We identified that its stars have azimuthal velocity in the range of $200 < v_ϕ\,{\rm(km\,s^{-1})}< 250$. Combining their kinematics and spatial distribution, we designed a new method to select stars from this overdensity. This method allows us to easily identify the structure in both hemispheres and estimate their distances. Our analysis was supported by comparison with simulated data from the entire sky generated by $\texttt{Galaxia}$ code. Furthermore, we characterized, for the first time, the Monoceros overdensity in several chemical-abundance spaces. Our results confirm its similarity to stars found in the thin disk of the Galaxy and suggest an $\textit{in situ}$ formation. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the southern (Mon-S) and northern (Mon-N) regions of Monoceros exhibit indistinguishable chemical compositions.

AGAR: Attention Graph-RNN for Adaptative Motion Prediction of Point Clouds of Deformable Objects

This paper focuses on motion prediction for point cloud sequences in the challenging case of deformable 3D objects, such as human body motion. First, we investigate the challenges caused by deformable shapes and complex motions present in this type of representation, with the ultimate goal of understanding the technical limitations of state-of-the-art models. From this understanding, we propose an improved architecture for point cloud prediction of deformable 3D objects. Specifically, to handle deformable shapes, we propose a graph-based approach that learns and exploits the spatial structure of point clouds to extract more representative features. Then we propose a module able to combine the learned features in an adaptative manner according to the point cloud movements. The proposed adaptative module controls the composition of local and global motions for each point, enabling the network to model complex motions in deformable 3D objects more effectively. We tested the proposed method on the following datasets: MNIST moving digits, the Mixamo human bodies motions, JPEG and CWIPC-SXR real-world dynamic bodies. Simulation results demonstrate that our method outperforms the current baseline methods given its improved ability to model complex movements as well as preserve point cloud shape. Furthermore, we demonstrate the generalizability of the proposed framework for dynamic feature learning, by testing the framework for action recognition on the MSRAction3D dataset and achieving results on-par with state-of-the-art methods

Extending 3-DoF Metrics to Model User Behaviour Similarity in 6-DoF Immersive Applications

Immersive reality technologies, such as Virtual and Augmented Reality, have ushered a new era of user-centric systems, in which every aspect of the coding--delivery--rendering chain is tailored to the interaction of the users. Understanding the actual interactivity and behaviour of the users is still an open challenge and a key step to enabling such a user-centric system. Our main goal is to extend the applicability of existing behavioural methodologies for studying user navigation in the case of 6 Degree-of-Freedom (DoF). Specifically, we first compare the navigation in 6-DoF with its 3-DoF counterpart highlighting the main differences and novelties. Then, we define new metrics aimed at better modelling behavioural similarities between users in a 6-DoF system. We validate and test our solutions on real navigation paths of users interacting with dynamic volumetric media in 6-DoF Virtual Reality conditions. Our results show that metrics that consider both user position and viewing direction better perform in detecting user similarity while navigating in a 6-DoF system. Having easy-to-use but robust metrics that underpin multiple tools and answer the question ``how do we detect if two users look at the same content?" open the gate to new solutions for a user-centric system.

The Chemodynamical Nature of the Triangulum-Andromeda Overdensity

We present a chemodynamical study of the Triangulum-Andromeda overdensity (TriAnd) employing a sample of 31 candidate stars observed with the GRACES high-resolution ($R$=40,000) spectrograph at the Gemini North (8.1 m) telescope. TriAnd is a stellar substructure found toward the outer disk of the Milky Way, located at $R_{\rm GC}\sim 18$ kpc from the Sun, toward Galactic latitude $b \sim 25$°. Most stars in our sample have dynamical properties compatible with a disk stellar population. In addition, by applying an eccentricity cut, we are able to detect a stellar contamination that seems to be consistent with an accreted population. In chemical abundance space, the majority of our TriAnd candidates are similar to the outer thin-disk population, suggesting that the overdensity has an \textit{in situ} origin. Finally, the found accreted halo interlopers spatially overlapping with TriAnd should explain the historical discussion of the overdensity's nature due to its complex chemical patterns.

Phase-space Properties and Chemistry of the Sagittarius Stellar Stream Down to the Extremely Metal-poor ($\rm[Fe/H] \lesssim -3$) Regime

In this work, we study the phase-space and chemical properties of Sagittarius (Sgr) stream, the tidal tails produced by the ongoing destruction of Sgr dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy, focusing on its very metal-poor (VMP; $\rm[Fe/H] < -2$) content. We combine spectroscopic and astrometric information from SEGUE and $Gaia$ EDR3, respectively, with data products from a new large-scale run of $\texttt{StarHorse}$ spectro-photometric code. Our selection criteria yields ${\sim}1600$ stream members, including ${>}200$ VMP stars. We find the leading arm ($b>0^\circ$) of Sgr stream to be more metal-poor, by ${\sim}0.2$ dex, than the trailing one ($b<0^\circ$). With a subsample of turnoff and subgiant stars, we estimate this substructure's stellar population to be ${\sim}1$ Gyr older than the thick disk's. With the aid of an $N$-body model of the Sgr system, we verify that simulated particles stripped earlier (${>}2$ Gyr ago) have present-day phase-space properties similar to lower-metallicity stream stars. Conversely, those stripped more recently (${<}2$ Gyr) are preferentially more akin to metal-rich ($\rm[Fe/H] > -1$) members of the stream. Such correlation between kinematics and chemistry can be explained by the existence of a dynamically hotter, less centrally-concentrated, and more metal-poor population in Sgr dSph prior to its disruption, implying that this galaxy was able to develop a metallicity gradient before its accretion. Finally, we discovered several carbon-enhanced metal-poor ($\rm[C/Fe] > +0.7$ and $\rm[Fe/H] \leq -1.5$) stars in Sgr stream, which is in tension with current observations of its remaining core where such objects are not found.

The SDSS-Gaia View of the Color-Magnitude Relation for Blue Horizontal-branch Stars

We present an updated sample of blue horizontal-branch (BHB) stars selected from the photometric and spectroscopic data from Sloan Digital Sky Survey and its associated project Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and Exploration (SEGUE). With this data, we selected candidates for A-type stars in the color-color space and then a mixture modeling technique was implemented in order to distinguish between BHB and main-sequence/blue-straggler stars based on their surface gravity values ($\log \rm{g}$) estimated by the SEGUE Stellar Parameter Pipeline. Our robust approach allows us to attribute individual probabilities of each star truly being in the BHB stage. Hence, our method is advantageous in comparison to previous SEGUE BHB selections that adopted simple $\log \rm{g}$ cuts. We also revisit the color-magnitude relation for these stars and propose two calibrations, based on updated distances for Galactic globular clusters, to estimate absolute magnitudes with $(g-r)_0$ and $(u-r)_0$ colors.

Explaining Hierarchical Features in Dynamic Point Cloud Processing

This paper aims at bringing some light and understanding to the field of deep learning for dynamic point cloud processing. Specifically, we focus on the hierarchical features learning aspect, with the ultimate goal of understanding which features are learned at the different stages of the process and what their meaning is. Last, we bring clarity on how hierarchical components of the network affect the learned features and their importance for a successful learning model. This study is conducted for point cloud prediction tasks, useful for predicting coding applications.

The CUBES Science Case

We introduce the scientific motivations for the development of the Cassegrain U-Band Efficient Spectrograph (CUBES) that is now in construction for the Very Large Telescope. The assembled cases span a broad range of contemporary topics across Solar System, Galactic and extragalactic astronomy, where observations are limited by the performance of current ground-based spectrographs shortwards of 400nm. A brief background to each case is presented and specific technical requirements on the instrument design that flow-down from each case are identified. These were used as inputs to the CUBES design, that will provide a factor of ten gain in efficiency for astronomical spectroscopy over 300-405nm, at resolving powers of R~24,000 and ~7,000. We include performance estimates that demonstrate the ability of CUBES to observe sources that are up to three magnitudes fainter than currently possible at ground-ultraviolet wavelengths, and we place its predicted performance in the context of existing facillities.

An Application of a Runtime Epistemic Probabilistic Event Calculus to Decision-making in e-Health Systems

We present and discuss a runtime architecture that integrates sensorial data and classifiers with a logic-based decision-making system in the context of an e-Health system for the rehabilitation of children with neuromotor disorders. In this application, children perform a rehabilitation task in the form of games. The main aim of the system is to derive a set of parameters the child's current level of cognitive and behavioral performance (e.g., engagement, attention, task accuracy) from the available sensors and classifiers (e.g., eye trackers, motion sensors, emotion recognition techniques) and take decisions accordingly. These decisions are typically aimed at improving the child's performance by triggering appropriate re-engagement stimuli when their attention is low, by changing the game or making it more difficult when the child is losing interest in the task as it is too easy. Alongside state-of-the-art techniques for emotion recognition and head pose estimation, we use a runtime variant of a probabilistic and epistemic logic programming dialect of the Event Calculus, known as the Epistemic Probabilistic Event Calculus. In particular, the probabilistic component of this symbolic framework allows for a natural interface with the machine learning techniques. We overview the architecture and its components, and show some of its characteristics through a discussion of a running example and experiments. Under consideration for publication in Theory and Practice of Logic Programming (TPLP).

The Unmixed Debris of Gaia-Sausage/Enceladus in the Form of a Pair of Halo Stellar Overdensities

In the first billion years after its formation, the Galaxy underwent several mergers with dwarf satellites of various masses. The debris of Gaia-Sausage/Enceladus (GSE), the galaxy responsible for the last significant merger of the Milky Way, dominates the inner halo and has been suggested to be the progenitor of both the Hercules-Aquila Cloud (HAC) and Virgo Overdensity (VOD). We combine SEGUE, APOGEE, Gaia, and StarHorse distances to characterize the chemodynamical properties and verify the link between HAC, VOD, and GSE. We find that the orbital eccentricity distributions of the stellar overdensities and GSE are comparable. We also find that they have similar, strongly peaked, metallicity distribution functions, reinforcing the hypothesis of common origin. Furthermore, we show that HAC and VOD are indistinguishable from the prototypical GSE population within all chemical-abundance spaces analyzed. All these evidences combined provide a clear demonstration that the GSE merger is the main progenitor of the stellar populations found within these halo overdensities.

Reconstructing the Disrupted Dwarf Galaxy $Gaia$-Sausage/Enceladus Using its Stars and Globular Clusters

We combine spectroscopic, photometric, and astrometric information from APOGEE data release 17 and $Gaia$ early data release 3 to perform a self-consistent characterization of $Gaia$-Sausage/Enceladus (GSE), the remnant of the last major merger experienced by the Milky Way, considering stars and globular clusters (GCs) altogether. Our novel set of chemodynamical criteria to select genuine stars of GSE yields a metallicity distribution function with a median [Fe/H] of $-1.22$ dex and $0.23$ dex dispersion. Stars from GSE present an excess of [Al/Fe] and [Mg/Mn] (also [Mg/Fe]) in comparison to surviving Milky Way dwarf satellites, which can be explained by differences in star-formation efficiencies and timescales between these systems. However, stars from Sequoia, another proposed accreted halo substructure, essentially overlap the GSE footprint in all analyzed chemical-abundance spaces, but present lower metallicities. Among probable GCs of GSE with APOGEE observations available, we find no evidence for atypical [Fe/H] spreads with the exception of $ω$ Centauri ($ω$Cen). Under the assumption that $ω$Cen is a stripped nuclear star cluster, we estimate the stellar mass of its progenitor to be $M_\star \approx 1.3 \times 10^9 M_\odot$, well-within literature expectations for GSE. This leads us to envision GSE as the best available candidate for the original host galaxy of $ω$Cen. We also take advantage of $Gaia$'s photometry and APOGEE metallicities as priors to determine fundamental parameters for eight high-probability ($>$70%) GC members of GSE via statistical isochrone fitting. Finally, the newly determined ages and APOGEE [Fe/H] values are utilized to model the age-metallicity relation of GSE.

CUBES Phase A design overview -- The Cassegrain U-Band Efficient Spectrograph for the Very Large Telescope

We present the baseline conceptual design of the Cassegrain U-Band Efficient Spectrograph (CUBES) for the Very Large Telescope. CUBES will provide unprecedented sensitivity for spectroscopy on a 8 - 10 m class telescope in the ground ultraviolet (UV), spanning a bandwidth of > 100 nm that starts at 300 nm, the shortest wavelength accessible from the ground. The design has been optimized for end-to-end efficiency and provides a spectral resolving power of R > 20000, that will unlock a broad range of new topics across solar system, Galactic and extraglactic astronomy. The design also features a second, lower-resolution (R \sim 7000) mode and has the option of a fiberlink to the UVES instrument for simultaneous observations at longer wavelengths. Here we present the optical, mechanical and software design of the various subsystems of the instrument after the Phase A study of the project. We discuss the expected performances for the layout choices and highlight some of the performance trade-offs considered to best meet the instrument top-level requirements. We also introduce the model-based system engineering approach used to organize and manage the project activities and interfaces, in the context that it is increasingly necessary to integrate such tools in the development of complex astronomical projects.

A ROS Architecture for Personalised HRI with a Bartender Social Robot

BRILLO (Bartending Robot for Interactive Long-Lasting Operations) project has the overall goal of creating an autonomous robotic bartender that can interact with customers while accomplishing its bartending tasks. In such a scenario, people's novelty effect connected to the use of an attractive technology is destined to wear off and, consequently, it negatively affects the success of the service robotics application. For this reason, providing personalised natural interaction while accessing its services is of paramount importance for increasing users' engagement and, consequently, their loyalty. In this paper, we present the developed three-layers ROS architecture integrating a perception layer managing the processing of different social signals, a decision-making layer for handling multi-party interactions, and an execution layer controlling the behaviour of a complex robot composed of arms and a face. Finally, user modelling through a beliefs layer allows for personalised interaction.

Abundance Patterns of $α$ and Neutron-capture Elements in the Helmi Stream

We identified 8 additional stars as members of the Helmi stream (HStr) in the combined GALAH+ DR3 and $Gaia$ EDR3 catalog. By consistently reevaluating claimed members from the literature, we consolidate a sample of 22 HStr stars with parameters determined from high-resolution spectroscopy and spanning a considerably wider (by $\sim$0.5 dex) metallicity interval ($-2.5 \lesssim \rm[Fe/H] < -1.0$) than previously reported. Our study focuses on $α$ (Mg and Ca) and neutron-capture (Ba and Eu) elements. We find that the chemistry of HStr is typical of dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies, in good agreement with previous $N$-body simulations of this merging event. Stars of HStr constitute a clear declining sequence in $\rm[α/Fe]$ for increasing metallicity up to $\rm[Fe/H] \sim -1.0$. Moreover, stars of HStr show a median value of $+$0.5 dex for $\rm[Eu/Fe]$ with a small dispersion ($\pm$0.1 dex). Every star analyzed with $\rm[Fe/H] < -1.2$ belong to the $r$-process enhanced ($\rm[Eu/Fe] > +0.3$ and $\rm[Ba/Eu] < 0.0$) metal-poor category, providing remarkable evidence that, at such low-metallicity regime, stars of HStr experienced enrichment in neutron-capture elements predominantly via $r$-process nucleosynthesis. Finally, the extended metallicity range also suggests an increase in $\rm[Ba/Eu]$ for higher $\rm[Fe/H]$, in conformity with other surviving dwarf satellite galaxies of the Milky Way.
