The Quasiparticle Ansatz for Relativistic Continuous Matrix Product States

The Relativistic Continuous Matrix Product State (RCMPS) ansatz introduced in arXiv:2102.07741 is a translation-invariant variational ansatz intended to approximate the ground states of gapped one-dimensional relativistic Quantum Field Theories directly in the continuum limit and in infinite volume. In this work, we develop an ansatz, referred to as the Relativistic Quasiparticle (RQP) ansatz, for the low-lying one-particle excitations of the RCMPS vacuum, as well as for solitons interpolating between two distinct degenerate vacua. The corresponding energies of these states can be obtained as the eigenvalues of an effective Hamiltonian. The RQP ansatz generalizes constructions used in the Matrix Product State and Continuous Matrix Product State literature. We apply the RQP ansatz to the sine-Gordon model and find good agreement with results from integrability for both the soliton and breather masses. We also apply the RQP ansatz to the $ϕ^4$ theory, in both its $\mathbb Z_2$-preserving and $\mathbb{Z}_2$-broken phases, and determine the spectrum of particles and solitons. This enables us to determine the parameter regime for which multiple stable particles exist.

Supercurrents and (Partial) Supersymmetry in Adjoint QCD$_2$ and Its Generalizations

$1+1$-dimensional $SU(N)$ gauge theory coupled to an adjoint Majorana fermion, also known as adjoint QCD$_2$, has the surprising feature that at fermion mass $\sqrt{\frac{g^2 N}{2 π}}$ it exhibits supersymmetry. In this paper, we obtain a deeper insight into how the supersymmetry works by constructing the gauge invariant, Lorentz covariant supercurrent $j_{μA}$. Its conservation relies crucially on the presence of a quantum anomaly. We generalize this construction to a class of models where, in addition to an adjoint Majorana fermion of an appropriate mass, the gauge theory is coupled to some collection of massless fermions ($SU(N)$ may be replaced by a more general gauge group). In general, these models have a supersymmetric massive sector and a non-supersymmetric CFT sector [arXiv:2202.04017], but there are cases in which both sectors are supersymmetric. An example of such a gapless, fully supersymmetric model is $SU(N)$ gauge theory coupled to three adjoint Majorana fermions, of which two are massless and the third has mass $\sqrt{\frac{3g^2 N}{2π}}$.

The two-flavor Schwinger model at 50: Solving Coleman's puzzles

In his 1976 paper "More about the massive Schwinger model", Coleman introduced $1+1$-dimensional Quantum Electrodynamics coupled to two charged massive fermions. By applying Abelian bosonization, he elucidated much of the physics of this two-flavor Schwinger model, but he listed three puzzles at the end of his paper. We present new analytical and numerical calculations to solve Coleman's three puzzles and thereby deepen our understanding of this model. These puzzles pertain to the theory with equal fermion masses at $θ= 0$ and at $θ= π$, as well as the size of isospin-breaking effects when the fermion masses are unequal. For the puzzle at $θ= π$, the solution is related to the structure of the zero-temperature phase diagram arXiv:2305.04437: for equal fermion masses $m$, the model exhibits spontaneous breaking of charge conjugation symmetry and absence of confinement for any value of the gauge coupling $g$, so that there is a smooth interpolation from weak to strong coupling. Using two-loop Renormalization Group and integrability methods, we show that the mass gap behaves as $\sim m e^{-0.111 g^2/m^2}$ in the strong coupling regime $m\ll g$. Our numerical results using the lattice Hamiltonian are in good agreement with this behavior. For the puzzle at $θ= 0$, the solution is related to a level crossing between two isosinglet particles with different discrete quantum numbers; we demonstrate the necessity of such a crossing by comparing integrability and weak coupling calculations, and we also exhibit the crossing numerically. Finally, we provide a new estimate for the size of isospin-breaking effects caused by different fermion masses at strong coupling.

Infinite matrix product states for $(1+1)$-dimensional gauge theories

We present a matrix product operator construction that allows us to represent the lattice Hamiltonians of (abelian or non-abelian) gauge theories in a local and manifestly translation-invariant form. In particular, we use symmetric matrix product states and introduce link-enhanced matrix product operators (LEMPOs) that can act on both the physical and virtual spaces of the matrix product states. This construction allows us to study Hamiltonian lattice gauge theories on infinite lattices. As examples, we show how to implement this method to study the massless and massive one-flavor Schwinger model and adjoint QCD$_2$.

Integral constraints for $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills from a squashed sphere

Supersymmetric localization and Ward identities have been used in the past several years to derive two integral constraints on the four-point function of the stress-tensor multiplet in $\mathcal{N} = 4$ super-Yang-Mills theory. These constraints are powerful tools for studying the theory, especially when used in tandem with analytic and/or numerical bootstrap techniques. In this paper, we consider three additional integral constraints that can be derived starting from the $\mathcal{N} = 4$ super-Yang-Mills theory placed on a squashed four-sphere. These constraints are technically much more challenging to derive than the ones in the literature, and much of the paper is devoted to developing techniques to make this computation tractable. Our end result is that these three constraints are implied by the two constraints already appearing in the literature.

Vacuum structure of gapped QCD$_2$ theories from the infinite Hamiltonian lattice

Gapped two-dimensional gauge theories with massless fermions generically have rich vacuum structures consisting of many degenerate vacua related by the action of topological line operators. The algebra of such operators has been used to calculate ratios of vacuum expectation values of local operators and to predict nontrivial particle-soliton degeneracies. In this paper, we use recently-developed tensor network methods to study several examples of such theories via their Hamiltonian lattice descriptions. Our lattice results agree with all previously-made predictions. Furthermore, we identify the lattice strong-coupling states that can be adiabatically continued to the degenerate vacua in the continuum limit. We conjecture a procedure, referred to as a lattice decay rule, for how this identification works in general. This rule allows us to compute the continuum vacuum degeneracy by studying the lattice Hamiltonian in the strong-coupling limit.

Conformal collider bootstrap in ${\mathcal N}=4$ SYM

We use a combination of perturbation theory, holography, supersymmetric localization, integrability, and numerical conformal bootstrap methods to constrain the energy-energy correlator in $\text{SU}(N_c)$ ${\mathcal N}=4$ SYM at finite coupling. For finite $N_c$, we derive lower bounds on the second and fourth multipoles of the energy-energy correlator at different couplings, along with a smeared energy-energy correlator as a function of the angle between the two detectors. We present evidence that our lower bounds on the multipoles are nearly saturated by the ${\cal N} = 4$ SYM theory. In the planar limit, we further use dispersive functionals to obtain tight two-sided bounds on both the first three non-trivial multipoles and on the angular dependence of the energy-energy correlator. As the coupling is varied from weak to strong, the energy-energy correlator exhibits a transition from single-trace to double-trace operator dominance in the collinear limit, which we characterize quantitatively. A similar phenomenon occurs in QCD, where a parton-hadron transition is observed as detectors are brought closer together.

Bootstrapping M-theory Orbifolds

We analyze correlation functions of $SU(k) \times SU(2)_F$ flavor currents in a family of three-dimensional ${\cal N}=4$ superconformal field theories, combining analytic bootstrap methods with input from supersymmetric localization. Via holographic duality, we extract gluon and graviton scattering amplitudes of M-theory on ${\rm AdS}_4\times S^7/\mathbb{Z}_k$ which contains a $\mathbb{C}^2/\mathbb{Z}_{k}$ orbifold singularity. From these results, we derive aspects of the effective description of M-theory on the orbifold singularity beyond its leading low energy limit. We also determine a threshold correction to the holographic correlator, which vanishes due to equal and opposite contributions from the two-loop gluon and the tree-level bulk graviton exchange.

More About the Lattice Hamiltonian for Adjoint QCD$_2$

In our earlier work arXiv:2311.09334, we introduced a lattice Hamiltonian for Adjoint QCD$_2$ using staggered Majorana fermions. We found the gauge invariant space of states explicitly for the gauge group $\text{SU}(2)$ and used them for numerical calculations of observables, such as the spectrum and the expectation value of the fermion bilinear. In this paper, we carry out a more in-depth study of our lattice model, extending it to any compact and simply-connected gauge group $G$. We show how to find the gauge invariant space of states and use it to study various observables. We also use the lattice model to calculate the mixed 't Hooft anomalies of Adjoint QCD$_2$ for arbitrary $G$. We show that the matrix elements of the lattice Hamiltonian can be expressed in terms of the Wigner 6$j$-symbols of $G$. For $G = \text{SU}(3)$, we perform exact diagonalization for lattices of up to six sites and study the low-lying spectrum, the fermion bilinear condensate, and the string tension. We also show how to write the lattice strong coupling expansion for ground state energies and operator expectation values in terms of the Wigner 6$j$-symbols. For $\text{SU}(3)$ we carry this out explicitly and find good agreement with the exact diagonalizations, and for $\text{SU}(4)$ we give expansions that can be compared with future numerical studies.

Higher-derivative corrections in M-theory from precision numerical bootstrap

We study higher-derivative corrections to the graviton scattering amplitude in M-theory, via the stress tensor correlator of 3d $\mathcal{N} =8$ $\text{U}(N)_k\times \text{U}(N)_{-k}$ ABJM theory (dual to graviton scattering in M-theory on $\text{AdS}_4\times S^7/\mathbb{Z}_k$). We use the conformal bootstrap combined with an integral constraint derived from supersymmetric localization in order to constrain semishort OPE coefficients appearing in the stress tensor correlator. We obtain islands that are significantly more precise than those in previous studies that did not use the integral constraint. Using these islands, we can estimate the powers and coefficients in a large central charge expansion. This allows us to accurately read off the N$^3$LO contribution, from the protected $D^6 R^4$ correction, and also estimate the N$^4$LO contribution, from the unprotected $D^8 R^4$ correction.

Small Circle Expansion for Adjoint QCD$_2$ with Periodic Boundary Conditions

We study $1+1$-dimensional $\text{SU}(N)$ gauge theory coupled to one adjoint multiplet of Majorana fermions on a small spatial circle of circumference $L$. Using periodic boundary conditions, we derive the effective action for the quantum mechanics of the holonomy and the fermion zero modes in perturbation theory up to order $(gL)^3$. When the adjoint fermion mass-squared is tuned to $g^2 N/(2π)$, the effective action is found to be an example of supersymmetric quantum mechanics with a nontrivial superpotential. We separate the states into the $\mathbb{Z}_N$ center symmetry sectors (universes) labeled by $p=0, \ldots, N-1$ and show that in one of the sectors the supersymmetry is unbroken, while in the others it is broken spontaneously. These results give us new insights into the $(1,1)$ supersymmetry of adjoint QCD$_2$, which has previously been established using light-cone quantization. When the adjoint mass is set to zero, our effective Hamiltonian does not depend on the fermions at all, so that there are $2^{N-1}$ degenerate sectors of the Hilbert space. This construction appears to provide an explicit realization of the extended symmetry of the massless model, where there are $2^{2N-2}$ operators that commute with the Hamiltonian. We also generalize our results to other gauge groups $G$, for which supersymmetry is found at the adjoint mass-squared $g^2 h^\vee/(2π)$, where $h^\vee$ is the dual Coxeter number of $G$.

Global Symmetry and Integral Constraint on Superconformal Lines in Four Dimensions

We study properties of point-like impurities preserving flavor symmetry and supersymmetry in four-dimensional ${\cal N} = 2$ field theories. At large distances, such impurities are described by half-BPS superconformal line defects. By working in the $\text{AdS}_2\times \text{S}^2$ conformal frame, we develop a novel and simpler way of deriving the superconformal Ward identities relating the various two-point functions of flavor current multiplet operators in the presence of the defect. We use these relations to simplify a certain integrated two-point function of flavor current multiplet operators that, in Lagrangian theories, can be computed using supersymmetric localization. The simplification gives an integral constraint on the two-point function of the flavor current multiplet superconformal primary with trivial integration measure in the $\text{AdS}_2\times \text{S}^2$ conformal frame. We provide several consistency checks on our Ward identities.

Lattice Hamiltonian for Adjoint QCD$_2$

We introduce a Hamiltonian lattice model for the $(1+1)$-dimensional $\text{SU}(N_c)$ gauge theory coupled to one adjoint Majorana fermion of mass $m$. The discretization of the continuum theory uses staggered Majorana fermions. We analyze the symmetries of the lattice model and find lattice analogs of the anomalies of the corresponding continuum theory. An important role is played by the lattice translation by one lattice site, which in the continuum limit involves a discrete axial transformation. On a lattice with periodic boundary conditions, the Hilbert space breaks up into sectors labeled by the $N_c$-ality $p=0, \ldots N_c-1$. Our symmetry analysis implies various exact degeneracies in the spectrum of the lattice model. In particular, it shows that, for $m=0$ and even $N_c$, the sectors $p$ and $p'$ are degenerate if $|p-p'| = N_c/2$. In the $N_c = 2$ case, we explicitly construct the action of the Hamiltonian on a basis of gauge-invariant states, and we perform both a strong coupling expansion and exact diagonalization for lattices of up to $12$ lattice sites. Upon extrapolation of these results, we find good agreement with the spectrum computed previously using discretized light-cone quantization. One of our new results is the first numerical calculation of the fermion bilinear condensate.

Level Repulsion in $\mathcal{N} = 4$ super-Yang-Mills via Integrability, Holography, and the Bootstrap

We combine supersymmetric localization with the numerical conformal bootstrap to bound the scaling dimension and OPE coefficient of the lowest-dimension operator in $\mathcal{N} = 4$ $\text{SU}(N)$ super-Yang-Mills theory for a wide range of $N$ and Yang-Mills couplings $g_\text{YM}$. We find that our bounds are approximately saturated by weak coupling results at small $g_\text{YM}$. Furthermore, at large $N$ our bounds interpolate between integrability results for the Konishi operator at small $g_\text{YM}$ and strong-coupling results, including the first few stringy corrections, for the lowest-dimension double-trace operator at large $g_\text{YM}$. In particular, our scaling dimension bounds describe the level splitting between the single- and double-trace operators at intermediate coupling.

Phase Diagram of the Two-Flavor Schwinger Model at Zero Temperature

We examine the phase structure of the two-flavor Schwinger model as a function of the $θ$-angle and the two masses, $m_1$ and $m_2$. In particular, we find interesting effects at $θ=π$: along the $SU(2)$-invariant line $m_1 = m_2 = m$, in the regime where $m$ is much smaller than the charge $g$, the theory undergoes logarithmic RG flow of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless type. As a result, in this regime there is a non-perturbatively small mass gap $\sim e^{- A g^2/m^2}$. The $SU(2)$-invariant line lies within a region of the phase diagram where the charge conjugation symmetry is spontaneously broken and whose boundaries we determine numerically. Our numerical results are obtained using the Hamiltonian lattice gauge formulation that includes the mass shift $m_\text{lat} = m- g^2 a/4$ dictated by the discrete chiral symmetry.

Scattering From $(p,q)$-Strings in $\text{AdS}_5 \times \text{S}^5$

Motivated by understanding the scattering of gravitons and their superpartners from extended $(p, q)$-strings in type IIB string theory via AdS/CFT, we study an integrated two-point function of stress tensor multiplet operators in the presence of a half-BPS line defect in ${\cal N} = 4$ $SU(N)$ super-Yang-Mills theory. We determine this integrated correlator at the five lowest non-trivial orders in $1/\sqrt{N}$ at fixed Yang-Mills coupling and $θ$ angle. Our calculations are performed explicitly when the line defect is a Wilson line, in which case we find a finite number of perturbative contributions at each order in $1/\sqrt{N}$, as well as instanton contributions. Using $SL(2, \mathbb{Z})$ transformations, our results can also be applied to Wilson-'t Hooft line defects dual to extended $(p, q)$-strings in the bulk. We analyze features of these integrated correlators in the weak coupling expansion by comparing with open-closed amplitudes of type IIB string theory on $\text{AdS}_5\times \text{S}^5$, as well as in its flat space limit. We predict new higher-derivative interaction vertices on the D1-brane and, more generally, on $(p,q)$-strings.

Discrete Chiral Symmetry and Mass Shift in Lattice Hamiltonian Approach to Schwinger Model

We revisit the lattice formulation of the Schwinger model using the Kogut-Susskind Hamiltonian approach with staggered fermions. This model, introduced by Banks et al., contains the mass term $m_{\rm lat} \sum_{n} (-1)^{n} χ^\dagger_n χ_n$, and setting it to zero is often assumed to provide the lattice regularization of the massless Schwinger model. We instead argue that the relation between the lattice and continuum mass parameters should be taken as $m_{\rm lat}=m- \frac 18 e^2 a$. The model with $m=0$ is shown to possess a discrete chiral symmetry that is generated by the unit lattice translation accompanied by the shift of the $θ$-angle by $π$. While the mass shift vanishes as the lattice spacing $a$ approaches zero, we find that including this shift greatly improves the rate of convergence to the continuum limit. We demonstrate the faster convergence using both numerical diagonalizations of finite lattice systems, as well as extrapolations of the lattice strong coupling expansions.

Adjoint Majorana QCD$_2$ at Finite $N$

The mass spectrum of $1+1$-dimensional $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ gauge theory coupled to a Majorana fermion in the adjoint representation has been studied in the large $N$ limit using Light-Cone Quantization. Here we extend this approach to theories with small values of $N$, exhibiting explicit results for $N=2, 3$, and $4$. In the context of Discretized Light-Cone Quantization, we develop a procedure based on the Cayley-Hamilton theorem for determining which states of the large $N$ theory become null at finite $N$. For the low-lying bound states, we find that the squared masses divided by $g^2 N$, where $g$ is the gauge coupling, have very weak dependence on $N$. The coefficients of the $1/N^2$ corrections to their large $N$ values are surprisingly small. When the adjoint fermion is massless, we observe exact degeneracies that we explain in terms of a Kac-Moody algebra construction and charge conjugation symmetry. When the squared mass of the adjoint fermion is tuned to $g^2 N / π$, we find evidence that the spectrum exhibits boson-fermion degeneracies, in agreement with the supersymmetry of the model at any value of $N$.
