Convergence Properties of Dynamic String Averaging Projection Methods in the Presence of Perturbations

Assuming that the absence of perturbations guarantees weak or strong convergence to a common fixed point, we study the behavior of perturbed products of an infinite family of nonexpansive operators. Our main result indicates that the convergence rate of unperturbed products is essentially preserved in the presence of perturbations. This, in particular, applies to the linear convergence rate of dynamic string averaging projection methods, which we establish here as well. Moreover, we show how this result can be applied to the superiorization methodology.

A note on alternating projections in Hilbert space

We provide a direct proof of a result regarding the asymptotic behavior of alternating nearest point projections onto two closed and convex sets in a Hilbert space. Our arguments are based on nonexpansive mapping theory.

Porosity Results for Sets of Strict Contractions on Geodesic Metric Spaces

We consider a large class of geodesic metric spaces, including Banach spaces, hyperbolic spaces and geodesic $\mathrm{CAT}(κ)$-spaces, and investigate the space of nonexpansive mappings on either a convex or a star-shaped subset in these settings. We prove that the strict contractions form a negligible subset of this space in the sense that they form a $σ$-porous subset. For separable metric spaces we show that a generic nonexpansive mapping has Lipschitz constant one at typical points of its domain. These results contain the case of nonexpansive self-mappings and the case of nonexpansive set-valued mappings as particular cases.

Outer Approximation Methods for Solving Variational Inequalities in Hilbert Space

In this paper we study variational inequalities in a real Hilbert space, which are governed by a strongly monotone and Lipschitz continuous operator $F$ over a closed and convex set $C$. We assume that the set $C$ can be outerly approximated by the fixed point sets of a sequence of certain quasi-nonexpansive operators called cutters. We propose an iterative method the main idea of which is to project at each step onto a particular half-space constructed by using the input data. Our approach is based on a method presented by Fukushima in 1986, which has recently been extended by several authors. In the present paper we establish strong convergence in Hilbert space. We emphasize that to the best of our knowledge, Fukushima's method has so far been considered only in the Euclidean setting with different conditions on $F$. We provide several examples for the case where $C$ is the common fixed point set of a finite number of cutters with numerical illustrations of our theoretical results.

Growth Estimates for the Numerical Range of Holomorphic Mappings and Applications

The numerical range of holomorphic mappings arises in many aspects of nonlinear analysis, finite and infinite dimensional holomorphy, and complex dynamical systems. In particular, this notion plays a crucial role in establishing exponential and product formulas for semigroups of holomorphic mappings, the study of flow invariance and range conditions, geometric function theory in finite and infinite dimensional Banach spaces, and in the study of complete and semi-complete vector fields and their applications to starlike and spirallike mappings, and to Bloch (univalence) radii for locally biholomorphic mappings. In the present paper we establish lower and upper bounds for the numerical range of holomorphic mappings in Banach spaces. In addition, we study and discuss some geometric and quantitative analytic aspects of fixed point theory, nonlinear resolvents of holomorphic mappings, Bloch radii, as well as radii of starlikeness and spirallikeness.

The asymptotic behavior of a class of nonlinear semigroups in Hadamard spaces

We study a nonlinear semigroup associated to a nonexpansive mapping on a Hadamard space and establish its weak convergence to a fixed point. A discrete-time counterpart of such a semigroup, the proximal point algorithm, turns out to have the same asymptotic behavior. This complements several results in the literature -- both classical and more recent ones. As an application, we obtain a new approach to heat flows in singular spaces for discrete, as well as continuous times.

Optimal pricing for optimal transport

Suppose that $c(x,y)$ is the cost of transporting a unit of mass from $x\in X$ to $y\in Y$ and suppose that a mass distribution $μ$ on $X$ is transported optimally (so that the total cost of transportation is minimal) to the mass distribution $ν$ on $Y$. Then, roughly speaking, the Kantorovich duality theorem asserts that there is a price $f(x)$ for a unit of mass sold (say by the producer to the distributor) at $x$ and a price $g(y)$ for a unit of mass sold (say by the distributor to the end consumer) at $y$ such that for any $x\in X$ and $y\in Y$, the price difference $g(y)-f(x)$ is not greater than the cost of transportation $c(x,y)$ and such that there is equality $g(y)-f(x)=c(x,y)$ if indeed a nonzero mass was transported (via the optimal transportation plan) from $x$ to $y$. We consider the following optimal pricing problem: suppose that a new pricing policy is to be determined while keeping a part of the optimal transportation plan fixed and, in addition, some prices at the sources of this part are also kept fixed. From the producers' side, what would then be the highest compatible pricing policy possible? From the consumers' side, what would then be the lowest compatible pricing policy possible? In the framework of $c$-convexity theory, we have recently introduced and studied optimal $c$-convex $c$-antiderivatives and explicit constructions of these optimizers were presented. In the present paper we employ optimal $c$-convex $c$-antiderivatives and conclude that these are natural solutions to the optimal pricing problems mentioned above. This type of problems drew attention in the past and existence results were previously established in the case where $X=Y=R^n$ under various specifications. We solve the above problem for general spaces $X,Y$ and real-valued, lower semicontinuous cost functions $c$.

Abstract convex optimal antiderivatives

Having studied families of antiderivatives and their envelopes in the setting of classical convex analysis, we now extend and apply these notions and results in settings of abstract convex analysis. Given partial data regarding a c-subdifferential, we consider the set of all c-convex c-antiderivatives that comply with the given data. Under a certain assumption, this set is not empty and contains both its lower and upper envelopes. We represent these optimal antiderivatives by explicit formulae. Some well known functions are, in fact, optimal c-convex c-antiderivatives. In one application, we point out a natural minimality property of the Fitzpatrick function of a c-monotone mapping, namely that it is a minimal antiderivative. In another application, in metric spaces, a constrained Lipschitz extension problem fits naturally the convexity notions we discuss here. It turns out that the optimal Lipschitz extensions are precisely the optimal antiderivatives. This approach yields explicit formulae for these extensions, the most particular case of which recovers the well known extensions due to McShane and Whitney.

An algorithm for solving the variational inequality problem over the fixed point set of a quasi-nonexpansive operator in Euclidean space

This paper is concerned with the variational inequality problem (VIP) over the fixed point set of a quasi-nonexpansive operator. We propose, in particular, an algorithm which entails, at each step, projecting onto a suitably chosen half-space, and prove that the sequences it generates converge to the unique solution of the VIP. We also present an application of our result to a hierarchical optimization problem.

The Split Common Null Point Problem

We introduce and study the Split Common Null Point Problem (SCNPP) for set-valued maximal monotone mappings in Hilbert spaces. This problem generalizes our Split Variational Inequality Problem (SVIP) [Y. Censor, A. Gibali and S. Reich, Algorithms for the split variational inequality problem, Numerical Algorithms 59 (2012), 301--323]. The SCNPP with only two set-valued mappings entails finding a zero of a maximal monotone mapping in one space, the image of which under a given bounded linear transformation is a zero of another maximal monotone mapping. We present four iterative algorithms that solve such problems in Hilbert spaces, and establish weak convergence for one and strong convergence for the other three.

A von Neumann Alternating Method for Finding Common Solutions to Variational Inequalities

Modifying von Neumann's alternating projections algorithm, we obtain an alternating method for solving the recently introduced Common Solutions to Variational Inequalities Problem (CSVIP). For simplicity, we mainly confine our attention to the two-set CSVIP, which entails finding common solutions to two unrelated variational inequalities in Hilbert space.

Algorithms for the Split Variational Inequality Problem

We propose a prototypical Split Inverse Problem (SIP) and a new variational problem, called the Split Variational Inequality Problem (SVIP), which is a SIP. It entails finding a solution of one inverse problem (e.g., a Variational Inequality Problem (VIP)), the image of which under a given bounded linear transformation is a solution of another inverse problem such as a VIP. We construct iterative algorithms that solve such problems, under reasonable conditions, in Hilbert space and then discuss special cases, some of which are new even in Euclidean space.

Zone diagrams in compact subsets of uniformly convex normed spaces

A zone diagram is a relatively new concept which has emerged in computational geometry and is related to Voronoi diagrams. Formally, it is a fixed point of a certain mapping, and neither its uniqueness nor its existence are obvious in advance. It has been studied by several authors, starting with T. Asano, J. Matousek and T. Tokuyama, who considered the Euclidean plane with singleton sites, and proved the existence and uniqueness of zone diagrams there. In the present paper we prove the existence of zone diagrams with respect to finitely many pairwise disjoint compact sites contained in a compact and convex subset of a uniformly convex normed space, provided that either the sites or the convex subset satisfy a certain mild condition. The proof is based on the Schauder fixed point theorem, the Curtis-Schori theorem regarding the Hilbert cube, and on recent results concerning the characterization of Voronoi cells as a collection of line segments and their geometric stability with respect to small changes of the corresponding sites. Along the way we obtain the continuity of the Dom mapping as well as interesting and apparently new properties of Voronoi cells.

Zone and double zone diagrams in abstract spaces

A zone diagram is a relatively new concept which was first defined and studied by T. Asano, J. Matousek and T. Tokuyama. It can be interpreted as a state of equilibrium between several mutually hostile kingdoms. Formally, it is a fixed point of a certain mapping. These authors considered the Euclidean plane and proved the existence and uniqueness of zone diagrams there. In the present paper we generalize this concept in various ways. We consider general sites in m-spaces (a simple generalization of metric spaces) and prove several existence and (non)uniqueness results in this setting. In contrast to previous works, our (rather simple) proofs are based on purely order theoretic arguments. Many explicit examples are given, and some of them illustrate new phenomena which occur in the general case. We also re-interpret zone diagrams as a stable configuration in a certain combinatorial game, and provide an algorithm for finding this configuration in a particular case.

Linearization models for parabolic dynamical systems via Abel's functional equation

We study linearization models for continuous one-parameter semigroups of parabolic type. In particular, we introduce new limit schemes to obtain solutions of Abel's functional equation and to study asymptotic behavior of such semigroups. The crucial point is that these solutions are univalent functions convex in one direction. In a parallel direction, we find analytic conditions which determine certain geometric properties of those functions, such as the location of their images in either a half-plane or a strip, and their containing either a half-plane or a strip. In the context of semigroup theory these geometric questions may be interpreted as follows: is a given one-parameter continuous semigroup either an outer or an inner conjugate of a group of automorphisms? In other words, the problem is finding a fractional linear model of the semigroup which is defined by a group of automorphisms of the open unit disk. Our results enable us to establish some new important analytic and geometric characteristics of the asymptotic behavior of one-parameter continuous semigroups of holomorphic mappings, as well as to study the problem of existence of a backward flow invariant domain and its geometry.

A rigidity theorem for holomorphic generators on the Hilbert ball

We present a rigidity property of holomorphic generators on the open unit ball $\mathbb{B}$ of a Hilbert space $H$. Namely, if $f\in\Hol (\mathbb{B},H)$ is the generator of a one-parameter continuous semigroup ${F_t}_{t\geq 0}$ on $\mathbb{B}$ such that for some boundary point $τ\in \partial\mathbb{B}$, the admissible limit $K$-$\lim\limits_{z\toτ}\frac{f(x)}{\|x-τ\|^{3}}=0$, then $f$ vanishes identically on $\mathbb{B}$.

Commuting semigroups of holomorphic mappings

Let $S_{1}=\left\{F_t\right\}_{t\geq 0}$ and $S_{2}=\left\{G_t\right\}_{t\geq 0}$ be two continuous semigroups of holomorphic self-mappings of the unit disk $Δ=\{z:|z|<1\}$ generated by $f$ and $g$, respectively. We present conditions on the behavior of $f$ (or $g$) in a neighborhood of a fixed point of $S_{1}$ (or $S_{2}$), under which the commutativity of two elements, say, $F_1$ and $G_1$ of the semigroups implies that the semigroups commute, i.e., $F_{t}\circ G_{s}=G_{s}\circ F_{t}$ for all $s,t\geq 0$. As an auxiliary result, we show that the existence of the (angular or unrestricted) $n$-th derivative of the generator $f$ of a semigroup $\left\{F_t\right\}_{t\geq 0}$ at a boundary null point of $f$ implies that the corresponding derivatives of $F_{t}$, $t\geq 0$, also exist, and we obtain formulae connecting them for $n=2,3$.
