Equivalent Theory and Retrieval of Effective Metamaterials Parameters

We apply the equivalent theory to orthorhombic anisotropic materials and provide a general unit-cell design criterion for achieving a length-independent retrieval of the effective material parameters from a single layer of unit cells. We introduce a graphical retrieval method and phase unwrapping techniques. The graphical method utilizes the linear regression technique. Our method can reduce the uncertainty of experimental measurements and the ambiguity of phase unwrapping. Moreover, the graphical method can simultaneously determine the bulk values of the six effective material parameters, permittivity and permeability tensors, from a single layer of unit cells.

Mode Bifurcation and Fold Points of Complex Dispersion Curves for the Metamaterial Goubau Line

In this paper the complex dispersion curves of the four lowest-order transverse magnetic modes of a dielectric Goubau line ($ε>0, μ>0$) are compared with those of a dispersive metamaterial Goubau line. The vastly different dispersion curve structure for the metamaterial Goubau line is characterized by unusual features such as mode bifurcation, complex fold points, both proper and improper complex modes, and merging of complex and real modes.

Exotic Grazing Resonances in Nanowires

We investigate electromagnetic scattering from nanoscale wires and reveal for the first time, the emergence of a family of exotic resonances, or enhanced fields, for source waves close to grazing incidence. These grazing resonances can have a much higher Q factor, broader bandwidth, and are much less susceptible to material losses than the well known surface plasmon resonances found in metal nanowires. Contrary to surface plasmon resonances however, these grazing resonances can be excited in both dielectric and metallic nanowires and are insensitive to the polarization state of the incident wave. This peculiar resonance effect originates from the excitation of long range guided surface waves through the interplay of coherently scattered continuum modes coupled with the azimuthal first order propagating mode of the cylindrical nanowire. The nanowire resonance phenomenon revealed here can be utilized in broad scientific areas, including: metamaterial designs, nanophotonic integration, nanoantennas, and nanosensors.

Resonant Transmission of Electromagnetic Fields through Subwavelength Zero-$ε$ Slits

We theoretically investigate the transmission of electromagnetic radiation through a metal plate with a zero-$ε$ metamaterial slit, where the permittivity tends towards zero over a given bandwidth. Our analytic results demonstrate that the transmission coefficient can be substantial for a broad range of slit geometries, including subwavelength widths that are many wavelengths long. This novel resonant effect has features quite unlike the Fabry-Pérot-like resonances that have been observed in conductors with deep channels. We further reveal that these high impedance ultranarrow zero-$ε$ channels can have significantly {\it greater} transmission compared to slits with no wave impedance difference across them.

Guided Modes of Elliptical Metamaterial Waveguides

The propagation of guided electromagnetic waves in open elliptical metamaterial waveguide structures is investigated. The waveguide contains a negative-index media core, where the permittivity, $ε$ and permeability $μ$ are negative over a given bandwidth. The allowed mode spectrum for these structures is numerically calculated by solving a dispersion relation that is expressed in terms of Mathieu functions. By probing certain regions of parameter space, we find the possibility exists to have extremely localized waves that transmit along the surface of the waveguide.

Parametrically Shielding Electromagnetic Fields by Nonlinear Metamaterials

An analytical theory is developed for parametric interactions in metamaterial multilayer structures with simultaneous nonlinear electronic and magnetic responses and with near-zero refractive-index. We demonstrate theoretically that electromagnetic fields of certain frequencies can be parametrically shielded by a nonlinear left-handed material slab, where the permittivity and permeability are both negative. The skin depth is tunable, and even in the absence of material absorption, can be much less than the wavelength of the electromagnetic field being shielded. This exotic behavior is a consequence of the intricate nonlinear response in the left-handed materials and vanishing optical refractive-index at the pump frequency.

Subwavelength fractional Talbot effect in layered heterostructures of composite metamaterials

We demonstrate that under certain conditions, fractional Talbot revivals can occur in heterostructures of composite metamaterials, such as multilayer positive and negative index media, metallodielectric stacks, and one-dimensional dielectric photonic crystals. Most importantly, without using the paraxial approximation we obtain Talbot images for the feature sizes of transverse patterns smaller than the illumination wavelength. A general expression for the Talbot distance in such structures is derived, and the conditions favorable for observing Talbot effects in layered heterostructures is discussed.

Transparent photonic band in metallodielectric nanostructures

Under certain conditions, a transparent photonic band can be designed into a one-dimensional metallodielectric nanofilm structure. Unlike conventional pass bands in photonic crystals, where the finite thickness of the structure affects the transmission of electromagnetic fields having frequency within the pass band, the properties of the transparent band are almost unaffected by the finite thickness of the structure. In other words, an incident field at a frequency within the transparent band exhibits 100% transmission independent of the number of periods of the structure. The transparent photonic band corresponds to excitation of pure eigenstate modes across the entire Bloch band in structures possessing mirror symmetry. The conditions to create these modes and thereby to lead to a totally transparent band phenomenon are discussed.
