Measurement of the helicity-dependent response in quasi-elastic proton knockout from $^{40}{\rm Ca}$

The role of the electron-helicity-dependent cross-section term and the structure function $f^{\prime}_{01}$ in the quasi-elastic $A(\vec{e}, e^{\prime}p)$ process was studied. The $f^{\prime}_{01}$ was measured for proton knockout from the $1\mathrm{d}_{3/2}$ shell in $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$ via the $^{40}{\rm Ca}(\vec{e},e' p)^{39}{\rm K}_{\rm g.s.}$ reaction, leaving the residual nucleus in a well-defined state. It requires a longitudinally polarized electron beam and out-of-plane proton detection. This structure function vanishes in the absence of final-state interactions (FSI) involving the ejected proton. Presented are the dependencies of $f^{\prime}_{01}$ on the missing momentum (closely related to the initial proton's Fermi momentum) and the angle between the knocked-out proton and the virtual photon momenta. The role of the spin-orbit interaction in FSI through the $\vec{L}\cdot \vec{S}$ term in a nuclear optical potential is discussed.

Single-pion contribution to the Gerasimov--Drell--Hearn sum rule and related integrals

Phenomenological amplitudes obtained in partial-wave analyses (PWA) of single-pion photoproduction are used to evaluate the contribution of this process to the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH), Baldin and Gell-Mann-Goldberger-Thirring (GGT) sum rules, by integrating up to 2 GeV in photon energy. Our study confirms that the single-pion contribution to all these sum rules converges even before the highest considered photon energy, but the levels of saturation are very different in the three cases. Single-pion production almost saturates the GDH sum rule for the proton, while a large fraction is missing in the neutron case. The Baldin integrals for the proton and the neutron are both saturated to about four fifths of the predicted total strength. For the GGT sum rule, the wide variability in predictions precludes any definitive statement.

Measurements of the electron-helicity asymmetry in the quasi-elastic ${\rm A}(\vec{e},e' p)$ process

We present measurements of the electron helicity asymmetry in quasi-elastic proton knockout from $^{2}$H and $^{12}$C nuclei by polarized electrons. This asymmetry depends on the fifth structure function, is antisymmetric with respect to the scattering plane, and vanishes in the absence of final-state interactions, and thus it provides a sensitive tool for their study. Our kinematics cover the full range in off-coplanarity angle $ϕ_{pq}$, with a polar angle $θ_{pq}$ coverage up to about 8 degrees. The missing energy resolution enabled us to determine the asymmetries for knock-out resulting in different states of the residual $^{11}$B system. We find that the helicity asymmetry for $p$-shell knockout from $^{12}$C depends on the final state of the residual system and is relatively large (up to $\approx 0.16$), especially at low missing momentum. It is considerably smaller (up to $\approx 0.01$) for $s$-shell knockout from both $^{12}$C and $^2$H. The data for $^2$H are in very good agreement with theoretical calculations, while the predictions for $^{12}$C exhibit differences with respect to the data.

Precision measurements of A=3 nuclei in Hall B

We propose a high-statistics measurement of few body nuclear structure and short range correlations in quasi-elastic scattering at 6.6 GeV from $^2$H, $^3$He and $^3$H targets in Hall B with the CLAS12 detector. We will measure absolute cross sections for $(e,e'p)$ and $(e,e'pN)$ quasi-elastic reaction channels up to a missing momentum $p_{miss} \approx 1$ GeV/c over a wide range of $Q^2$ and $x_B$ and construct the isoscalar sum of $^3$H and $^3$He. We will compare $(e,e'p)$ cross sections to nuclear theory predictions using a wide variety of techniques and $NN$ interactions in order to constrain the $NN$ interaction at short distances. We will measure $(e,e'pN)$ quasi-elastic reaction cross sections and $(e,e'pN)/(e,e'p)$ ratios to understand short range correlated (SRC) $NN$ pairs in the simplest non-trivial system. $^3$H and $^3$He, being mirror nuclei, exploit the maximum available isospin asymmetry. They are light enough that their ground states are readily calculable, but they already exhibit complex nuclear behavior, including $NN$ SRCs. We will also measure $^2$H$(e,e'p)$ in order to help theorists constrain non-quasielastic reaction mechanisms in order to better calculate reactions on $A=3$ nuclei. Measuring all three few body nuclei together is critical, in order to understand and minimize different reaction effects, such as single charge exchange final state interactions, in order to test ground-state nuclear models. We will also measure the ratio of inclusive $(e,e')$ quasi-elastic cross sections (integrated over $x_B$) from $^3$He and $^3$H in order to extract the neutron magnetic form factor $G_M^n$ at small and moderate values of $Q^2$. We will measure this at both 6.6 GeV and 2.2 GeV.

Measurements of the induced polarization in the quasi-elastic $A(e,e'\vec p\,)$ process in non-coplanar kinematics

We report measurements of the induced polarization $\vec P$ of protons knocked out from $^2$H and $^{12}$C via the $A(e,e'\vec p\,)$ reaction. We have studied the dependence of $\vec P$ on two kinematic variables: the missing momentum $p_{\rm miss}$ and the "off-coplanarity" angle $ϕ_{pq}$ between the scattering and reaction planes. For the full 360$\degree$ range in $ϕ_{pq}$, both the normal ($P_y$) and, for the first time, the transverse ($P_x$) components of the induced polarization were measured with respect to the coordinate system associated with the scattering plane. $P_x$ vanishes in coplanar kinematics, however in non-coplanar kinematics, it is on the same scale as $P_y$. We find that the dependence on $ϕ_{pq}$ is sine-like for $P_x$ and cosine-like for $P_y$. For carbon, the magnitude of the induced polarization is especially large when protons are knocked out from the $p_{3/2}$ shell at very small $p_{\rm miss}$. For the deuteron, the induced polarization is near zero at small $|p_{\rm miss}|$, and its magnitude increases with $|p_{\rm miss}|$. For both nuclei such behavior is reproduced qualitatively by theoretical results, driven largely by the spin-orbit part of the final-state interactions. However, for both nuclei, sizeable discrepancies exist between experiment and theory.

Polarization transfer to bound protons measured by quasi-elastic electron scattering on $^{12}$C

We report the measurements of the transverse ($P'x$) and longitudinal ($P'z$) components of the polarization transfer to a bound proton in carbon via the quasi-free $^{12}{\rm C}(\vec e,e'\vec p)$ reaction, over a wide range of missing momenta. We determine these polarization-transfers separately for protons knocked out from the $s$- and $p$-shells. The electron-beam polarization was measured to determine the individual components with systematic uncertainties which allow a detailed comparison with theoretical calculations.

Quasi-elastic polarization-transfer measurements on the deuteron in anti-parallel kinematics

We present measurements of the polarization-transfer components in the $^2$H$(\vec e,e'\vec p)$ reaction, covering a previously unexplored kinematic region with large positive (anti-parallel) missing momentum, $p_{\rm miss}$, up to 220 MeV$/c$, and $Q^2=0.65$ $({\rm GeV}/c)^2$. These measurements, performed at the Mainz Microtron (MAMI), were motivated by theoretical calculations which predict small final-state interaction (FSI) effects in these kinematics, making them favorable for searching for medium modifications of bound nucleons in nuclei. We find in this kinematic region that the measured polarization-transfer components $P_x$ and $P_z$ and their ratio agree with the theoretical calculations, which use free-proton form factors. Using this, we establish upper limits on possible medium effects that modify the bound proton's form factor ratio $G_E/G_M$ at the level of a few percent. We also compare the measured polarization-transfer components and their ratio for $^2$H to those of a free (moving) proton. We find that the universal behavior of $^2$H, $^4$He and $^{12}$C in the double ratio $\frac{(P_x/P_z)^A}{(P_x/P_z)^{^1\rm H}}$ is maintained in the positive missing-momentum region.

The proton charge radius extracted from the Initial State Radiation experiment at MAMI

We report on a comprehensive reinterpretation of the existing cross-section data for elastic electron-proton scattering obtained by the initial-state radiation technique, resulting in a significantly improved accuracy of the extracted proton charge radius. By refining the external energy corrections we have achieved an outstanding description of the radiative tail, essential for a detailed investigation of the proton finite-size effects on the measured cross-sections. This development, together with a novel framework for determining the radius, based on a regression analysis of the cross-sections employing a polynomial model for the form factor, led us to a new value for the charge radius, which is $(0.870 \pm 0.014_\mathrm{stat.}\pm 0.024_\mathrm{sys.} \pm 0.003_\mathrm{mod.})\,\mathrm{fm}$.

Puzzles in eta photoproduction: the 1685~MeV narrow peak

We claim that a narrow peak in the cross section near 1685~MeV in the $γn\to ηn$ channel can be explained through a peculiar radial behaviour of the $p$-wave quark states with $j=1/2$ and $j=3/2$ in the low lying S11 resonances and the opening of the $KΣ$ threshold rather than by an exotic resonance. We explain the mechanism of its formation in the framework of a coupled channel formalism which incorporates quasi-bound quark-model states corresponding to the two low lying resonances in the S11 partial wave. A relation to the Single Quark Transition Model is pointed out.

Eta and kaon production in a chiral quark model

We apply a coupled-channel formalism incorporating quasi-bound quark-model states to calculate pion scattering into eta N, K Lambda and K Sigma channels, as well eta p, eta n, K+Lambda, and K0Sigma+ photo-production processes. The meson-baryon and photon-baryon vertices are determined in a SU(3) version of the Cloudy Bag Model. Our model predicts sizable amplitudes in the P11, P13, P33 and S11 partial waves in agreement with the latest MAID isobar model and the recent partial-wave analyses of the Bonn-Gatchina group. We are able to give a quark-model explanation for the apparent resonance at 1685 MeV in the eta n channel.

A chiral quark model for meson electro-production in the S11 partial wave

We calculate the meson scattering and electro-production amplitudes in the S11 partial wave in a coupled-channel approach that incorporates quasi-bound quark-model states. Using the quark wave functions and the quark-meson interaction from the Cloudy Bag Model, we obtain a good overall agreement with the available experimental results for the partial widths of the N(1535) and the N(1650) resonances as well as for the pion, eta and kaon electro-production amplitudes. Our model is consistent with the N(1535) resonance being dominantly a genuine three-quark state rather than a quasi-bound state of mesons and baryons.

Neutral pion threshold production at Q^2=0.05 GeV^2/c^2 and Chiral Perturbation Theory

New data are presented on the p(e,e'p)π^0 reaction at threshold at a four-momentum transfer of Q^2=0.05 GeV^2/c^2. The data were taken with the three-spectrometer setup of the A1 Collaboration at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. The complete center of mass solid angle was covered up to a center of mass energy of 4 MeV above threshold. Combined with measurements at three different values of the virtual photon polarization ε, the structure functions σ_T, σ_L, σ_{TT}, and σ_{TL} are determined. The results are compared with calculations in Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory and with a phenomenological model. The measured cross section is significantly smaller than both predictions.

Coherent π^0 threshold production from the deuteron at Q^2 = 0.1 GeV^2/c^2

First data on coherent threshold π^0 electroproduction from the deuteron taken by the A1 Collaboration at the Mainz Microtron MAMI are presented. At a four-momentum transfer of q^2=-0.1 GeV^2/c^2 the full solid angle was covered up to a center-of-mass energy of 4 MeV above threshold. By means of a Rosenbluth separation the longitudinal threshold s wave multipole and an upper limit for the transverse threshold s wave multipole could be extracted and compared to predictions of Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory.
