Slow relaxation and diffusion in holographic quantum critical phases

The dissipative dynamics of strongly interacting systems are often characterised by the timescale set by the inverse temperature $τ_P\sim\hbar/(k_BT)$. We show that near a class of strongly interacting quantum critical points that arise in the infra-red limit of translationally invariant holographic theories, there is a collective excitation (a quasinormal mode of the dual black hole spacetime) whose lifetime $τ_{eq}$ is parametrically longer than $τ_P$: $τ_{eq}\gg T^{-1}$. The lifetime is enhanced due to its dependence on a dangerously irrelevant coupling that breaks the particle-hole symmetry and the invariance under Lorentz boosts of the quantum critical point. The thermal diffusivity (in units of the butterfly velocity) is anomalously large near the quantum critical point and is governed by $τ_{eq}$ rather than $τ_P$. We conjecture that there exists a long-lived, propagating collective mode with velocity $v_s$, and in this case the relation $D=v_s^2τ_{eq}$ holds exactly in the limit $Tτ_{eq}\gg1$. While scale invariance is broken, a generalised scaling theory still holds provided that the dependence of observables on the dangerously irrelevant coupling is incorporated. Our work further underlines the connection between dangerously irrelevant deformations and slow equilibration.

Impact of irrelevant deformations on thermodynamics and transport in holographic quantum critical states

We study thermodynamic and transport observables of quantum critical states that arise in the infra-red limit of holographic renormalisation group flows. Although these observables are expected to exhibit quantum critical scaling, there are a number of cases in which their frequency and temperature dependences are in apparent contradiction with scaling theories. We study two different classes of examples, and show in both cases that the apparent breakdown of scaling is a consequence of the dependence of observables on an irrelevant deformation of the quantum critical state. By assigning scaling dimensions to the near-horizon observables, we formulate improved scaling theories that are completely consistent with all explicit holographic results once the dependence on the dangerously irrelevant coupling is properly accounted for. In addition to governing thermodynamic and transport phenomena in these states, we show that the dangerously irrelevant coupling also controls late-time equilibration, which occurs at a rate parametrically slower than the temperature $1/τ_{eq}\ll T$. At very late times, transport is diffusion-dominated, with a diffusivity that can be written simply in terms of $τ_{eq}$ and the butterfly velocity, $D\sim v_B^2τ_{eq}$. We conjecture that in such cases there exists a long-lived, propagating collective mode with velocity $v_s$, and in this case the relation $D=v_s^2τ_{eq}$ holds exactly in the limit $τ_{eq} T\gg1$.

Lifshitz entanglement entropy from holographic cMERA

We study entanglement entropy in free Lifshitz scalar field theories holographically by employing the metrics proposed by Nozaki, Ryu and Takayanagi in \cite{Nozaki:2012zj} obtained from a continuous multi-scale entanglement renormalisation ansatz (cMERA). In these geometries we compute the minimal surface areas governing the entanglement entropy as functions of the dynamical exponent $z$ and we exhibit a transition from an area law to a volume law analytically in the limit of large $z$. We move on to explore the effects of a massive deformation, obtaining results for any $z$ in arbitrary dimension. We then trigger a renormalisation group flow between a Lifshitz theory and a conformal theory and observe a monotonic decrease in entanglement entropy along this flow. We focus on strip regions but also consider a disc in the undeformed theory.

Holographic entanglement and causal information in coherent states

Scalar solitons in global AdS4 are holographically dual to coherent states carrying a non-trivial condensate of a scalar operator. We study the holographic information content of these states, focusing on a particular spatial region, by examining the entanglement entropy and causal holographic information. We show generically that whenever the dimension of the condensed operator is sufficiently low (characterized by the double-trace operator becoming relevant), such coherent states have lower entanglement and causal holographic information than the vacuum state of the system, despite having greater energy. We also use these geometries to illustrate the fact that causal wedges associated with a simply-connected boundary region can have non-trivial topology even in causally trivial spacetimes.

Holographic entanglement entropy of surface defects

We calculate the holographic entanglement entropy in type IIB supergravity solutions that are dual to half-BPS disorder-type surface defects in ${\cal N}=4$ Super Yang-Mills theory. The entanglement entropy is calculated for a ball-shaped region bisected by a surface defect. Using the bubbling supergravity solutions we also compute the expectation value of the defect operator. Combining our result with the previously-calculated one-point function of the stress tensor in the presence of the defect, we adapt the calculation of Lewkowycz and Maldacena to obtain a second expression for the entanglement entropy. Our two expressions agree up to an additional term, whose possible origin and significance is discussed

On the reconstruction of Lifshitz spacetimes

We consider the reconstruction of a Lifshitz spacetime from three perspectives: differential entropy (or "hole-ography"), causal wedges and entanglement wedges. We find that not all time-varying bulk curves in vacuum Lifshitz can be reconstructed via the differential entropy approach, adding a caveat to the general analysis of \cite{Headrick:2014eia}. We show that the causal wedge for Lifshitz spacetimes degenerates, while the entanglement wedge requires the additional consideration of a set of boundary-emanating light-sheets. The need to include bulk surfaces with no clear field theory interpretation in the differential entropy construction and the change in the entanglement wedge formation both serve as warnings against a naive application of holographic entanglement entropy proposals in Lifshitz spacetimes.

Drude in D major

We study holographic momentum relaxation in the limit of a large number of spacetime dimensions D. For an axion model we find that momentum conservation is restored as D becomes large. To compensate we scale the strength of the sources with D so that momentum is relaxed even at infinite D. We analytically obtain the quasi-normal modes which control electric and heat transport, and give their frequencies in a 1/D expansion. We also obtain the AC thermal conductivity as an expansion in 1/D, which at leading order takes Drude form. To order 1/D our analytical result provides a reasonable approximation to the AC conductivity even at D=4, establishing large D as a practical method in this context. As a further application, we discuss the signature of the transition from coherent to incoherent behaviour known to exist in the system for finite D.

Entanglement entropy of Wilson surfaces from bubbling geometries in M-theory

We consider solutions of eleven-dimensional supergravity constructed in [1,2] that are half-BPS, locally asymptotic to $AdS_7\times S^4$ and are the holographic dual of heavy Wilson surfaces in the six-dimensional $(2,0)$ theory. Using these bubbling solutions we calculate the holographic entanglement entropy for a spherical entangling surface in the presence of a planar Wilson surface. In addition, we calculate the holographic stress tensor and, by evaluating the on-shell supergravity action, the expectation value of the Wilson surface operator.

Relaxed superconductors

Momentum relaxation can be built into many holographic models without sacrificing homogeneity of the bulk solution. In this paper we study two such models: one in which translational invariance is broken in the dual theory by spatially-dependent sources for massless scalar fields and another that features an additional neutral scalar field. We turn on a charged scalar field in order to explore the condensation of a charged scalar operator in the dual theories. After demonstrating that the relaxed superconductors we construct are thermodynamically relevant, we find that the finite DC electrical conductivity of the normal phase is replaced by a superfluid pole in the broken phase. Moreover, when the normal phase possesses a Drude behaviour at low frequencies, the optical conductivity of the broken phase at low frequencies can be described by a two-fluid model that is a sum of a Drude peak and a superfluid pole, as was found recently for inhomogeneous holographic superconductors. We also study cases in which this low-frequency behavior does not hold. We find that the Drude description is accurate when the retarded current-current correlator has a purely-dissipative pole that is well-separated from the rest of the excitations.

Entanglement entropy of Wilson loops: Holography and matrix models

A half-BPS circular Wilson loop in $\mathcal{N}=4$ $SU(N)$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in an arbitrary representation is described by a Gaussian matrix model with a particular insertion. The additional entanglement entropy of a spherical region in the presence of such a loop was recently computed by Lewkowycz and Maldacena using exact matrix model results. In this note we utilize the supergravity solutions that are dual to such Wilson loops in a representation with order $N^2$ boxes to calculate this entropy holographically. Employing the matrix model results of Gomis, Matsuura, Okuda and Trancanelli we express this holographic entanglement entropy in a form that can be compared with the calculation of Lewkowycz and Maldacena. We find complete agreement between the matrix model and holographic calculations.

Collective Excitations of Holographic Quantum Liquids in a Magnetic Field

We use holography to study N=4 supersymmetric SU(Nc) Yang-Mills theory in the large-Nc and large-coupling limits coupled to a number Nf << Nc of (n+1)-dimensional massless supersymmetric hypermultiplets in the Nc representation of SU(Nc), with n=2,3. We introduce a temperature T, a baryon number chemical potential mu, and a baryon number magnetic field B, and work in a regime with mu >> T,\sqrt{B}. We study the collective excitations of these holographic quantum liquids by computing the poles in the retarded Green's function of the baryon number charge density operator and the associated peaks in the spectral function. We focus on the evolution of the collective excitations as we increase the frequency relative to T, i.e. the hydrodynamic/collisionless crossover. We find that for all B, at low frequencies the tallest peak in the spectral function is associated with hydrodynamic charge diffusion. At high frequencies the tallest peak is associated with a sound mode similar to the zero sound mode in the collisionless regime of a Landau Fermi liquid. The sound mode has a gap proportional to B, and as a result for intermediate frequencies and for B sufficiently large compared to T the spectral function is strongly suppressed. We find that the hydrodynamic/collisionless crossover occurs at a frequency that is approximately B-independent.

Superconducting instabilities of R-charged black branes

We explore superconducting instabilities of black branes in SO(6) gauged supergravity at finite temperature and finite R-charge densities. We compute the critical temperatures for homogeneous neutral and superconducting instabilities in a truncation of 20 scalars and 15 gauge fields as a function of the chemical potentials conjugate to the three U(1) charges in SO(6). We find that despite the imbalance provided by multiple chemical potentials there is always at least one superconducting black brane branch, emerging at a temperature where the normal phase is locally thermodynamically stable. We emphasise that the three-equal charge solution, Reissner-Nordstrom, is subdominant to a thermodynamically unstable black brane at sufficiently low temperatures --- a feature which is hidden in an equal charge truncation.

A soliton menagerie in AdS

We explore the behaviour of charged scalar solitons in asymptotically global AdS4 spacetimes. This is motivated in part by attempting to identify under what circumstances such objects can become large relative to the AdS length scale. We demonstrate that such solitons generically do get large and in fact in the planar limit smoothly connect up with the zero temperature limit of planar scalar hair black holes. In particular, for given Lagrangian parameters we encounter multiple branches of solitons: some which are perturbatively connected to the AdS vacuum and surprisingly, some which are not. We explore the phase space of solutions by tuning the charge of the scalar field and changing scalar boundary conditions at AdS asymptopia, finding intriguing critical behaviour as a function of these parameters. We demonstrate these features not only for phenomenologically motivated gravitational Abelian-Higgs models, but also for models that can be consistently embedded into eleven dimensional supergravity.

Shear channel correlators from hot charged black holes

We compute numerically the full retarded Green's functions for conserved currents in the shear channel of a (2+1)-dimensional field theory at non-zero temperature and density. This theory is assumed to be holographically dual to a non-extremal, electric Reissner-Nordstr\om AdS4 black hole with planar horizon. Using the holographic description we obtain results for arbitrary frequencies and momenta and survey the detailed structure of these correlators. In particular, we demonstrate the `repulsion' and `clover-leaf crossing' of their poles and stress the importance of the residues at the poles beyond the hydrodynamic regime. As a consistency check, we show that our results agree precisely with existing literature for the appropriate quasinormal frequencies of the bulk theory.
