Carleson measure estimates for caloric functions and parabolic uniformly rectifiable sets

Let $E \subset \mathbb R^{n+1}$ be a parabolic uniformly rectifiable set. We prove that every bounded solution $u$ to $$\partial_tu- Δu=0, \quad \text{in} \quad \mathbb R^{n+1}\setminus E$$ satisfies a Carleson measure estimate condition. An important technical novelty of our work is that we develop a corona domain approximation scheme for $E$ in terms of regular Lip(1/2,1) graph domains. This approximation scheme has an analogous elliptic version which is an improvement of the known results in that setting.

On Big Pieces approximations of parabolic hypersurfaces

Let $Σ$ be a closed subset of $\mathbb{R}^ {n+1}$ which is parabolic Ahlfors-David regular and assume that $Σ$ satisfies a 2-sided corkscrew condition. Assume, in addition, that $Σ$ is either time-forwards Ahlfors-David regular, time-backwards Ahlfors-David regular, or parabolic uniform rectifiable. We then first prove that $Σ$ satisfies a {\it weak synchronized two cube condition}. Based on this we are able to revisit the argument in \cite{NS} and prove that $Σ$ contains {\it uniform big pieces of Lip(1,1/2) graphs}. When $Σ$ is parabolic uniformly rectifiable the construction can be refined and in this case we prove that $Σ$ contains {\it uniform big pieces of regular parabolic Lip(1,1/2) graphs}. Similar results hold if $Ω\subset\mathbb R^{n+1}$ is a connected component of $\mathbb R^{n+1}\setminusΣ$ and in this context we also give a parabolic counterpart of the main result in \cite{AHMNT} by proving that if $Ω$ is a one-sided parabolic chord arc domain, and if $Σ$ is parabolic uniformly rectifiable, then $Ω$ is in fact a parabolic chord arc domain. Our results give a flexible parabolic version of the classical (elliptic) result of G. David and D. Jerison concerning the existence of uniform big pieces of Lipschitz graphs for sets satisfying a two disc condition.

Two Phase Free Boundary Problem for Poisson Kernels

We provide a potential theoretic characterization of vanishing chord-arc domains under minimal assumptions. In particular we show that, if a domain has Ahlfors regular boundary, the oscillation of the logarithm of the interior and exterior Poisson kernels yields a great deal of geometric information about the domain. We use techniques from the classical calculus of variations, potential theory, quantitative geometric measure theory to accomplish this. One feature of this work, compared to Bortz-Hofmann PAMS 16 and Kenig-Toro Crelle 06, is that a priori we only require that the domains in question are connected.

Coronizations and big pieces in metric spaces

We prove that coronizations with respect to arbitrary d-regular sets (not necessarily graphs) imply big pieces squared of these (approximating) sets. This is known (and due to David and Semmes in the case of sufficiently large co-dimension, and to Azzam and Schul in general) in the (classical) setting of Euclidean spaces with Hausdorff measure of integer dimension, where the approximating sets are Lipschitz graphs. Our result is a far reaching generalization of these results and we prove that coronizations imply big pieces squared is a generic property. In particular, our result applies, when suitably interpreted, in metric spaces having a fixed positive (perhaps non-integer) dimension, equipped with a Borel regular measure and with arbitrary approximating sets. As a novel application we highlight how to utilize this general setting in the context of parabolic uniform rectifiability.

Sobolev contractivity of gradient flow maximal functions

We prove that the energy dissipation property of gradient flows extends to the semigroup maximal operators in various settings. In particular, we show that the vertical maximal function relative to the $p$-parabolic extension does not increase the $\dot{W}^{1,p}$ norm of $\dot{W}^{1,p}(\mathbb{R}^n) \cap L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ functions when $p > 2$. We also obtain analogous results in the setting of uniformly parabolic and elliptic equations with bounded, measurable, real and symmetric coefficients, where the solutions do not have a representation formula via a convolution.

Rectifiability, interior approximation and Harmonic Measure

We prove a structure theorem for any $n$-rectifiable set $E\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, $n\ge 1$, satisfying a weak version of the lower ADR condition, and having locally finite $H^n$ ($n$-dimensional Hausdorff) measure. Namely, that $H^n$-almost all of $E$ can be covered by a countable union of boundaries of bounded Lipschitz domains contained in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}\setminus E$. As a consequence, for harmonic measure in the complement of such a set $E$, we establish a non-degeneracy condition which amounts to saying that $H^n|_E$ is "absolutely continuous" with respect to harmonic measure in the sense that any Borel subset of $E$ with strictly positive $H^n$ measure has strictly positive harmonic measure in some connected component of $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}\setminus E$. We also provide some counterexamples showing that our result for harmonic measure is optimal. Moreover, we show that if, in addition, a set $E$ as above is the boundary of a connected domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ which satisfies an infinitesimal interior thickness condition, then $H^n|_{\partialΩ}$ is absolutely continuous (in the usual sense) with respect to harmonic measure for $Ω$. Local versions of these results are also proved: if just some piece of the boundary is $n$-rectifiable then we get the corresponding absolute continuity on that piece. As a consequence of this and recent results by Azzam-Hofmann-Martell-Mayboroda-Mourgoglou-Tolsa-Volberg, we can decompose the boundary of any open connected set satisfying the previous conditions in two disjoint pieces: one that is $n$-rectifiable where Hausdorff measure is absolutely continuous with respect to harmonic measure and another purely $n$-unrectifiable piece having vanishing harmonic measure.

Non-local Gehring lemmas in spaces of homogeneous type and applications

We prove a self-improving property for reverse H{ö}lder inequalities with non-local right hand side. We attempt to cover all the most important situations that one encounters when studying elliptic and parabolic partial differential equations as well as certain fractional equations. We also consider non-local extensions of A$\infty$ weights. We write our results in spaces of homogeneous type.

$\varepsilon$-Approximability of Harmonic Functions in $L^p$ Implies Uniform Rectifiability

Suppose that $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, $n \ge 2$, is an open set satisfying the corkscrew condition with an $n$-dimensional ADR boundary, $\partial Ω$. In this note, we show that if harmonic functions are $\varepsilon$-approximable in $L^p$ for any $p > n/(n-1)$, then $\partial Ω$ is uniformly rectifiable. Combining our results with those in [HT] (Hofmann-Tapiola) gives us a new characterization of uniform rectifiability which complements the recent results in [HMM] (Hofmann-Martell-Mayboroda), [GMT] (Garnett-Mourgoglou-Tolsa) and [AGMT] (Azzam-Garnett-Mourgoglou-Tolsa).

Reifenberg Flatness and Oscillation of the Unit Normal Vector

We show (under mild topological assumptions) that small oscillation of the unit normal vector implies Reifenberg flatness. We then apply this observation to the study of chord-arc domains and to a quantitative version of a two-phase free boundary problem for harmonic measure previously studied by Kenig-Toro.

Non-local self-improving properties: A functional analytic approach

A functional analytic approach to obtaining self-improving properties of solutions to linear non-local elliptic equations is presented. It yields conceptually simple and very short proofs of some previous results due to Kuusi-Mingione-Sire and Bass-Ren. Its flexibility is demonstrated by new applications to non-autonomous parabolic equations with non-local elliptic part and questions related to maximal regularity

A Singular Integral approach to a Two Phase Free Boundary Problem

We present an alternative proof of a result of Kenig and Toro, which states that if $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ is a two sided NTA domain, with Ahlfors-David regular boundary, and the $\log$ of the Poisson kernel associated to $Ω$ as well as the $\log$ of the Poisson kernel associated to ${Ω_{\rm ext}}$ are in VMO, then the outer unit normal $ν$ is in VMO . Our proof exploits the usual jump relation formula for the non-tangential limit of the gradient of the single layer potential. We are also able to relax the assumptions of Kenig and Toro in the case that the pole for the Poisson kernel is finite: in this case, we assume only that $\partialΩ$ is uniformly rectifiable, and that $\partialΩ$ coincides with the measure theoretic boundary of $Ω$ a.e. with respect to Hausdorff $H^n$ measure.

Harmonic measure and approximation of uniformly rectifiable sets

Let $E\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, $n\ge 1$, be a uniformly rectifiable set of dimension $n$. We show $E$ that has big pieces of boundaries of a class of domains which satisfy a 2-sided corkscrew condition, and whose connected components are all chord-arc domains (with uniform control of the various constants). As a consequence, we deduce that $E$ has big pieces of sets for which harmonic measure belongs to weak-$A_\infty$
