Virtually abelian symmetry groups of hyperbolic lattices

We give a classification of integral lattices with virtually abelian symmetry group. As a consequence, we complete the classification of K3 surfaces with virtually abelian automorphism group. In the appendix we formulate an algorithm for weak approximation in orthogonal groups and use it to determine if two indefinite lattices are isometric.

Idoneal genera and K3 surfaces covering an Enriques surface

Idoneal genera are a generalization of Euler's idoneal numbers. We enumerate all idoneal genera by means of the Smith--Minkowski--Siegel mass formula. As an application, we classify transcendental lattices of K3 surfaces covering an Enriques surface.

Automorphisms of Nikulin-type orbifolds

Nikulin-type orbifolds are certain singular 4-dimensional irreducible holomorphic symplectic varieties. We show that the monodromy group of Nikulin-type orbifolds is maximal and classify finite order symplectic automorphisms up to deformation in terms of their action on the second integral cohomology group.

527 elliptic fibrations on Enriques surfaces

Barth and Peters showed that a general complex Enriques surface has exactly 527 isomorphism classes of elliptic fibrations. We show that every Enriques surface has precisely 527 isomorphism classes of elliptic fibrations when counted with the appropriate multiplicity. Their reducible singular fibers and the multiplicities can be calculated explicitly. The same statements hold over any algebraically closed field of characteristic not two. To explain these results, we construct a moduli space of complex elliptic Enriques surfaces and study the ramification behavior of the forgetful map to the moduli space of unpolarized Enriques surfaces. Curiously, the ramification indices of a similar map compute the hyperbolic volume of the rational polyhedral fundamental domain appearing in the Morrison-Kawamata cone conjecture.

Elliptic Fibrations on Vinberg's Most Algebraic K3 Surface

We explain how to use the computer algebra system OSCAR to find all elliptic fibrations (up to automorphism) on a given surface and compute their Weierstrass models. This is illustrated for Vinberg's most algebraic K3 surface, the unique K3 surface of Picard rank 20 and discriminant 3.

Hensel lifting algorithms for quadratic forms

We provide an algorithm to compute generators of the orthogonal group of the discriminant group associated to an integral quadratic lattice over the integers. We give a closed formula for its order.

Finite subgroups of automorphisms of K3 surfaces

We give a complete classification of finite subgroups of automorphisms of K3 surfaces up to deformation. The classification is in terms of Hodge theoretic data associated to certain conjugacy classes of finite subgroups of the orthogonal group of the K3 lattice. The moduli theory of K3 surfaces, in particular the surjectivity of the period map and the strong Torelli theorem allow us to interpret this datum geometrically. Our approach is computer aided and involves hermitian lattices over number fields.

Borcherds lattices and K3 surfaces of zero entropy

Let $L$ be an even, hyperbolic lattice with infinitely many simple $(-2)$-roots. We call $L$ a Borcherds lattice if it admits an isotropic vector with bounded inner product with all the simple $(-2)$-roots. We show that this is the case if and only if $L$ has zero entropy, or equivalently if and only if all symmetries of $L$ preserve some isotropic vector. We obtain a complete classification of Borcherds lattices, consisting of $194$ lattices. In turn this provides a classification of hyperbolic lattices of rank $\ge 5$ with virtually solvable symmetry group. Finally, we apply these general results to the case of K3 surfaces. We obtain a classification of Picard lattices of K3 surfaces of zero entropy and infinite automorphism group, consisting of $193$ lattices. In particular we show that all Kummer surfaces, all supersingular K3 surfaces and all K3 surfaces covering an Enriques surface (with one exception) admit an automorphism of positive entropy.

Equations for a K3 Lehmer map

McMullen proved that there exists an automorphism of minimal topological entropy on a projective K3 surface. We derive equations for the surface and its automorphism. We reconstruct the surface and its automorphism from the Hodge theoretic model provided by McMullen. The approach is computer aided and relies on finite non-symplectic automorphisms, $p$-adic lifting, elliptic fibrations and the Kneser neighbor method for integer lattices.

Generation of Local Unitary Groups

Let $E$ be a two-dimensional étale algebra over a non-Archimedean local field $K$ of characteristic zero. We show that the unitary group of a non-degenerate hermitian lattice over $E$ is generated by symmetries and rescaled Eichler isometries. In the appendix we show that unless $E/K$ is a ramified dyadic field extension and the residue field has two elements, symmetries suffice.

Automorphism groups of certain Enriques surfaces

We calculate the automorphism group of certain Enriques surfaces. The Enriques surfaces that we investigate include very general $n$-nodal Enriques surfaces and very general cuspidal Enriques surfaces. We also describe the action of the automorphism group on the set of smooth rational curves and on the set of elliptic fibrations.

Borcherds' method for Enriques surfaces

We classify all primitive embeddings of the lattice of numerical equivalence classes of divisors of an Enriques surface with the intersection form multiplied by 2 into an even unimodular hyperbolic lattice of rank 26. These embeddings have a property that facilitates the computation of the automorphism group of an Enriques surface by Borcherds' method.

Extensions of maximal symplectic actions on K3 surfaces

We classify pairs $(X,G)$ consisting of a complex K3 surface $X$ and a finite group $G \leq Aut(X)$ such that the subgroup $G_s \lneq G$ consisting of symplectic automorphisms is among the $11$ maximal symplectic ones as classified by Mukai.
