Spacelike thermal correlators are almost time-independent

We show that, in relativistic field theories, the thermal correlation function of N bosonic operators at sufficiently spacelike-separated points shows exponentially weak dependence on the time variables t_1,...,t_N, when the space separations are held fixed. For classical thermal field theory, the time dependence vanishes when all points are spacelike separated

Detectors in weakly-coupled field theories

We initiate a study of asymptotic detector operators in weakly-coupled field theories. These operators describe measurements that can be performed at future null infinity in a collider experiment. In a conformal theory they can be identified with light-ray operators, and thus have a direct relation to the spectrum of the theory. After a general discussion of the underlying physical picture, we show how infrared divergences of general detector operators can be renormalized in perturbation theory, and how they give rise to detector anomalous dimensions. We discuss in detail how this renormalization can be performed at the intersections of the Regge trajectories where non-trivial mixing occurs, which is related to the poles in anomalous dimensions at special values of spin. Finally, we discuss novel horizontal trajectories in scalar theories and show how they contribute to correlation functions. Our calculations are done in the example of $ϕ^4$ theory in $d=4-ε$ dimensions, but the methods are applicable more broadly. At the Wilson-Fisher fixed point our results include an explicit expression for the Pomeron light-ray operator at two loops, as well as a prediction for the value of the Regge intercept at five loops.

Bootstrapping $\mathcal{N}=4$ sYM correlators using integrability

How much spectral information is needed to determine the correlation functions of a conformal theory? We study this question in the context of planar supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, where integrability techniques accurately determine the single-trace spectrum at finite 't Hooft coupling. Corresponding OPE coefficients are constrained by dispersive sum rules, which implement crossing symmetry. Focusing on correlators of four stress-tensor multiplets, we construct combinations of sum rules which determine one-loop correlators, and we study a numerical bootstrap problem that nonperturbatively bounds planar OPE coefficients. We observe interesting cusps at the location of physical operators, and we obtain a nontrivial upper bound on the OPE coefficient of the Konishi operator outside the perturbative regime.

Graviton partial waves and causality in higher dimensions

Do gravitational interactions respect the basic principles of relativity and quantum mechanics? We show that any graviton S-matrix that satisfies these assumptions cannot significantly differ from General Relativity at low energies. We provide sharp bounds on the size of potential corrections in terms of the mass M of new higher-spin states, in spacetime dimensions D>=5 where the S-matrix does not suffer from infrared ambiguities. The key novel ingredient is the full set of SO(D-1) partial waves for this process, which we show how to efficiently compute with Young tableau manipulations. We record new bounds on the central charges of holographic conformal theories.

Duals of Feynman Integrals, 2: Generalized Unitarity

The first paper of this series introduced objects (elements of twisted relative cohomology) that are Poincaré dual to Feynman integrals. We show how to use the pairing between these spaces -- an algebraic invariant called the intersection number -- to express a scattering amplitude over a minimal basis of integrals, bypassing the generation of integration-by-parts identities. The initial information is the integrand on cuts of various topologies, computable as products of on-shell trees, providing a systematic approach to generalized unitarity. We give two algorithms for computing the multi-variate intersection number. As a first example, we compute 4- and 5-point gluon amplitudes in generic spacetime dimension. We also examine the 4-dimensional limit of our formalism and provide prescriptions for extracting rational terms.

Causality constraints on corrections to Einstein gravity

We study constraints from causality and unitarity on $2\to2$ graviton scattering in four-dimensional weakly-coupled effective field theories. Together, causality and unitarity imply dispersion relations that connect low-energy observables to high-energy data. Using such dispersion relations, we derive two-sided bounds on gravitational Wilson coefficients in terms of the mass $M$ of new higher-spin states. Our bounds imply that gravitational interactions must shut off uniformly in the limit $G \to 0$, and prove the scaling with $M$ expected from dimensional analysis (up to an infrared logarithm). We speculate that causality, together with the non-observation of gravitationally-coupled higher spin states at colliders, severely restricts modifications to Einstein gravity that could be probed by experiments in the near future.

AdS Bulk Locality from Sharp CFT Bounds

It is a long-standing conjecture that any CFT with a large central charge and a large gap $Δ_{\text{gap}}$ in the spectrum of higher-spin single-trace operators must be dual to a local effective field theory in AdS. We prove a sharp form of this conjecture by deriving numerical bounds on bulk Wilson coefficients in terms of $Δ_{\text{gap}}$ using the conformal bootstrap. Our bounds exhibit the scaling in $Δ_{\text{gap}}$ expected from dimensional analysis in the bulk. Our main tools are dispersive sum rules that provide a dictionary between CFT dispersion relations and S-matrix dispersion relations in appropriate limits. This dictionary allows us to apply recently-developed flat-space methods to construct positive CFT functionals. We show how AdS$_{4}$ naturally resolves the infrared divergences present in 4D flat-space bounds. Our results imply the validity of twice-subtracted dispersion relations for any S-matrix arising from the flat-space limit of AdS/CFT.

Ten dimensional symmetry of N=4 SYM correlators

We consider four-point correlation functions of protected single-trace scalar operators in planar N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM). We conjecture that all loop corrections derive from an integrand which enjoys a ten-dimensional symmetry. This symmetry combines spacetime and R-charge transformations. By considering a 10D light-like limit, we extend the correlator/amplitude duality by equating large R-charge octagons with Coulomb branch scattering amplitudes. Using results from integrability, this predicts new finite amplitudes as well as some Feynman integrals.

Helicity basis for three-dimensional conformal field theory

Three-point correlators of spinning operators admit multiple tensor structures compatible with conformal symmetry. For conserved currents in three dimensions, we point out that helicity commutes with conformal transformations and we use this to construct three-point structures which diagonalize helicity. In this helicity basis, OPE data is found to be diagonal for mean-field correlators of conserved currents and stress tensor. Furthermore, we use Lorentzian inversion formula to obtain anomalous dimensions for conserved currents at bulk tree-level order in holographic theories, which we compare with corresponding flat-space gluon scattering amplitudes.

Extremal Effective Field Theories

Effective field theories (EFT) parameterize the long-distance effects of short-distance dynamics whose details may or may not be known. It is known that EFT coefficients must obey certain positivity constraints if causality and unitarity are satisfied at all scales. We explore those constraints from the perspective of 2 to 2 scattering amplitudes of a light real scalar field, using semi-definite programming to carve out the space of allowed EFT coefficients for a given mass threshold M. We point out that all EFT parameters are bounded both below and above, effectively showing that dimensional analysis scaling is a consequence of causality. This includes the coefficients of four- and six-derivative interactions. We present simple extremal amplitudes which realize, or "rule in", kinks in coefficient space and whose convex hull span a large fraction of the allowed space.

Sharp Boundaries for the Swampland

We reconsider the problem of bounding higher derivative couplings in consistent weakly coupled gravitational theories, starting from general assumptions about analyticity and Regge growth of the S-matrix. Higher derivative couplings are expected to be of order one in the units of the UV cutoff. Our approach justifies this expectation and allows to prove precise bounds on the order one coefficients. Our main tool are dispersive sum rules for the S-matrix. We overcome the difficulties presented by the graviton pole by measuring couplings at small impact parameter, rather than in the forward limit. We illustrate the method in theories containing a massless scalar coupled to gravity, and in theories with maximal supersymmetry.

Dispersive CFT Sum Rules

We give a unified treatment of dispersive sum rules for four-point correlators in conformal field theory. We call a sum rule dispersive if it has double zeros at all double-twist operators above a fixed twist gap. Dispersive sum rules have their conceptual origin in Lorentzian kinematics and absorptive physics (the notion of double discontinuity). They have been discussed using three seemingly different methods: analytic functionals dual to double-twist operators, dispersion relations in position space, and dispersion relations in Mellin space. We show that these three approaches can be mapped into one another and lead to completely equivalent sum rules. A central idea of our discussion is a fully nonperturbative expansion of the correlator as a sum over Polyakov-Regge blocks. Unlike the usual OPE sum, the Polyakov-Regge expansion utilizes the data of two separate channels, while having (term by term) good Regge behavior in the third channel. We construct sum rules which are non-negative above the double-twist gap; they have the physical interpretation of a subtracted version of superconvergence sum rules. We expect dispersive sum rules to be a very useful tool to study expansions around mean-field theory, and to constrain the low-energy description of holographic CFTs with a large gap. We give examples of the first kind of applications, notably, we exhibit a candidate extremal functional for the spin-two gap problem.

Duals of Feynman Integrals, I: Differential Equations

We elucidate the vector space (twisted relative cohomology) that is Poincaré dual to the vector space of Feynman integrals (twisted cohomology) in general spacetime dimension. The pairing between these spaces - an algebraic invariant called the intersection number - extracts integral coefficients for a minimal basis, bypassing the generation of integration-by-parts identities. Dual forms turn out to be much simpler than their Feynman counterparts: they are supported on maximal cuts of various sub-topologies (boundaries). Thus, they provide a systematic approach to generalized unitarity, the reconstruction of amplitudes from on-shell data. In this paper, we introduce the idea of dual forms and study their mathematical structures. As an application, we derive compact differential equations satisfied by arbitrary one-loop integrals in non-integer spacetime dimension. A second paper of this series will detail intersection pairings and their use to extract integral coefficients.

Multi-Regge Limit of the Two-Loop Five-Point Amplitudes in $\mathcal{N} = 4$ Super Yang-Mills and $\mathcal{N} = 8$ Supergravity

In previous work, the two-loop five-point amplitudes in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory and $\mathcal{N}=8$ supergravity were computed at symbol level. In this paper, we compute the full functional form. The amplitudes are assembled and simplified using the analytic expressions of the two-loop pentagon integrals in the physical scattering region. We provide the explicit functional expressions, and a numerical reference point in the scattering region. We then calculate the multi-Regge limit of both amplitudes. The result is written in terms of an explicit transcendental function basis. For certain non-planar colour structures of the $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills amplitude, we perform an independent calculation based on the BFKL effective theory. We find perfect agreement. We comment on the analytic properties of the amplitudes.

Conformal Regge Theory at Finite Boost

The Operator Product Expansion is a useful tool to represent correlation functions. In this note we extend Conformal Regge theory to provide an exact OPE representation of Lorenzian four-point correlators in conformal field theory, valid even away from Regge limit. The representation extends convergence of the OPE by rewriting it as a double integral over continuous spins and dimensions, and features a novel "Regge block". We test the formula in the conformal fishnet theory, where exact results involving nontrivial Regge trajectories are available.

The leading trajectory in the 2+1D Ising CFT

We study the scattering of lumps in the 2+1-dimensional Ising CFT, indirectly, by analytically continuing its spectrum using the Lorentzian inversion formula. We find evidence that the intercept of the model is below unity: $j_*\approx 0.8$, indicating that scattering is asymptotically transparent corresponding to a negative Lyapunov exponent. We use as input the precise spectrum obtained from the numerical conformal bootstrap. We show that the truncated spectrum allows the inversion formula to reproduce the properties of the spin-two stress tensor to $10^{-4}$ accuracy and we address the question of whether the spin-0 operators of the model lie on Regge trajectories. This hypothesis is further supported by analytics in the large-N O(N) model. Finally, we show that anomalous dimensions of heavy operators decrease with energy at a rate controlled by $(j_*-1)$, implying regularity of the heavy spectrum.

A Conformal Dispersion Relation: Correlations from Absorption

We introduce the analog of Kramers-Kronig dispersion relations for correlators of four scalar operators in an arbitrary conformal field theory. The correlator is expressed as an integral over its 'absorptive part', defined as a double discontinuity, times a theory-independent kernel which we compute explicitly. The kernel is found by resumming the data obtained by the Lorentzian inversion formula. For scalars of equal scaling dimensions, it is a remarkably simple function (elliptic integral function) of two pairs of cross-ratios. We perform various checks of the dispersion relation (generalized free fields, holographic theories at tree-level, 3D Ising model), and get perfect matching. Finally, we derive an integral relation that relates the 'inverted' conformal block with the ordinary conformal block.

Two-parton scattering amplitudes in the Regge limit to high loop orders

We study two-to-two parton scattering amplitudes in the high-energy limit of perturbative QCD by iteratively solving the BFKL equation. This allows us to predict the imaginary part of the amplitude to leading-logarithmic order for arbitrary $t$-channel colour exchange. The corrections we compute correspond to ladder diagrams with any number of rungs formed between two Reggeized gluons. Our approach exploits a separation of the two-Reggeon wavefunction, performed directly in momentum space, between a soft region and a generic (hard) region. The former component of the wavefunction leads to infrared divergences in the amplitude and is therefore computed in dimensional regularization; the latter is computed directly in two transverse dimensions and is expressed in terms of single-valued harmonic polylogarithms of uniform weight. By combining the two we determine exactly both infrared-divergent and finite contributions to the two-to-two scattering amplitude order-by-order in perturbation theory. We study the result numerically to 13 loops and find that finite corrections to the amplitude have a finite radius of convergence which depends on the colour representation of the $t$-channel exchange.
