Metal-insulator transition and magnetism of SU(3) fermions in the square lattice

We study the SU(3) symmetric Fermi-Hubbard model (FHM) in the square lattice at $1/3$-filling using numerically exact determinant quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) and numerical linked-cluster expansion (NLCE) techniques. We present the different regimes of the model in the $T-U$ plane, which are characterized by local and short-range correlations, and capture signatures of the metal-insulator transition and magnetic crossovers. These signatures are detected as the temperature scales characterizing the rise of the compressibility, and an interaction-dependent change in the sign of the diagonal spin-spin correlation function. The analysis of the compressibility estimates the location of the metal-insulator quantum critical point at $U_c/t \sim 6$, and provides a temperature scale for observing Mott physics at finite-$T$. Furthermore, from the analysis of the spin-spin correlation function we observe that for $U/t \gtrsim6$ and $T \sim J = 4t^2/U$ there is a development of a short-range two sublattice (2-SL) antiferromagnetic structure, as well as an emerging three sublattice (3-SL) antiferromagnetic structure as the temperature is lowered below $T/J \lesssim 0.57$. This crossover from 2-SL to 3-SL magnetic ordering agrees with Heisenberg limit predictions, and has observable effects on the density of on-site pairs. Finally, we describe how the features of the regimes in the $T$-$U$ plane can be explored with alkaline-earth-like atoms in optical lattices with currently-achieved experimental techniques and temperatures. The results discussed in this manuscript provide a starting point for the exploration of the SU(3) FHM upon doping.

Equation of State and Thermometry of the 2D SU($N$) Fermi-Hubbard Model

We characterize the equation of state (EoS) of the SU($N>2$) Fermi-Hubbard Model (FHM) in a two-dimensional single-layer square optical lattice. We probe the density and the site occupation probabilities as functions of interaction strength and temperature for $N = 3, 4$ and 6. Our measurements are used as a benchmark for state-of-the-art numerical methods including determinantal quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) and numerical linked cluster expansion (NLCE). By probing the density fluctuations, we compare temperatures determined in a model-independent way by fitting measurements to numerically calculated EoS results, making this a particularly interesting new step in the exploration and characterization of the SU($N$) FHM.

Probing transport and slow relaxation in the mass-imbalanced Fermi-Hubbard model

Constraints in the dynamics of quantum many-body systems can dramatically alter transport properties and relaxation timescales even in the absence of static disorder. Here, we report on the observation of such constrained dynamics arising from the distinct mobility of two species in the one-dimensional mass-imbalanced Fermi-Hubbard model, realized with ultracold ytterbium atoms in a state-dependent optical lattice. By displacing the trap potential and monitoring the subsequent dynamical response of the system, we identify suppressed transport and slow relaxation with a strong dependence on the mass imbalance and interspecies interaction strength, consistent with eventual thermalization for long times. Our observations demonstrate the potential for quantum simulators to provide insights into unconventional relaxation dynamics arising from constraints.

Quasiparticle lifetime of the repulsive Fermi polaron

We investigate the metastable repulsive branch of a mobile impurity coupled to a degenerate Fermi gas via short-range interactions. We show that the quasiparticle lifetime of this repulsive Fermi polaron can be experimentally probed by driving Rabi oscillations between weakly and strongly interacting impurity states. Using a time-dependent variational approach, we find that we can accurately model the impurity Rabi oscillations that were recently measured for repulsive Fermi polarons in both two and three dimensions. Crucially, our theoretical description does not include relaxation processes to the lower-lying attractive branch. Thus, the theory-experiment agreement demonstrates that the quasiparticle lifetime is determined by many-body dephasing within the upper repulsive branch rather than by the metastability of the upper branch itself. Our findings shed light on recent experimental observations of persistent repulsive correlations, and have important consequences for the nature and stability of the strongly repulsive Fermi gas.

Clock-line photoassociation of strongly bound dimers in a magic-wavelength lattice

We report on the direct optical production and spectroscopy of $^1\mathrm{S}_0\mbox{-}^3\mathrm{P}_0$ molecules with large binding energy using the clock transition of $^{171}\mathrm{Yb}$, and on the observation of the associated orbital Feshbach resonance near $1300\,\mathrm{G}$. We measure the magnetic field dependence of the closed-channel dimer and of the open-channel pair state energy via clock-line spectroscopy in a deep optical lattice. In addition, we show that the free-to-bound transition into the dimer can be made first-order insensitive to the trap depth by choice of the lattice wavelength. Finally, we determine the fundamental intra- and interorbital scattering lengths and probe the stability of the corresponding pair states, finding long lifetimes in both interorbital interaction channels. These results are promising both for molecular clocks and for the preparation of strongly-interacting multiorbital Fermi gases.

Observation of coherent multiorbital polarons in a two-dimensional Fermi gas

We report on the experimental observation of multiorbital polarons in a two-dimensional Fermi gas of $^{173}\mathrm{Yb}$ atoms formed by mobile impurities in the metastable $^3\mathrm{P}_0$ orbital and a Fermi sea in the ground-state $^1\mathrm{S}_0$ orbital. We spectroscopically probe the energies of attractive and repulsive polarons close to an orbital Feshbach resonance and characterize their coherence by measuring the quasiparticle residue. For all probed interaction parameters, the repulsive polaron is a long-lived quasiparticle with a decay rate more than 2 orders of magnitude below its energy. We formulate a many-body theory, which accurately treats the interorbital interactions in two dimensions and agrees well with the experimental results. Our work paves the way for the investigation of many-body physics in multiorbital ultracold Fermi gases.

Localized magnetic moments with tunable spin exchange in a gas of ultracold fermions

We report on the experimental realization of a state-dependent lattice for a two-orbital fermionic quantum gas with strong interorbital spin exchange. In our state-dependent lattice, the ground and metastable excited electronic states of $^{173}$Yb take the roles of itinerant and localized magnetic moments, respectively. Repulsive on-site interactions in conjunction with the tunnel mobility lead to spin exchange between mobile and localized particles, modeling the coupling term in the well-known Kondo Hamiltonian. In addition, we find that this exchange process can be tuned resonantly by varying the on-site confinement. We attribute this to a resonant coupling to center-of-mass excited bound states of one interorbital scattering channel.

Exploring the Kondo model in and out of equilibrium with alkaline-earth atoms

We propose a scheme to realize the Kondo model with tunable anisotropy using alkaline-earth atoms in an optical lattice. The new feature of our setup is Floquet engineering of interactions using time-dependent Zeeman shifts, that can be realized either using state-dependent optical Stark shifts or magnetic fields. The properties of the resulting Kondo model strongly depend on the anisotropy of the ferromagnetic interactions. In particular, easy-plane couplings give rise to Kondo singlet formation even though microscopic interactions are all ferromagnetic. We discuss both equilibrium and dynamical properties of the system that can be measured with ultracold atoms, including the impurity spin susceptibility, the impurity spin relaxation rate, as well as the equilibrium and dynamical spin correlations between the impurity and the ferromagnetic bath atoms. We analyze the non-equilibrium time evolution of the system using a variational non-Gaussian approach, which allows us to explore coherent dynamics over both short and long timescales, as set by the bandwidth and the Kondo singlet formation, respectively. In the quench-type experiments, when the Kondo interaction is suddenly switched on, we find that real-time dynamics shows crossovers reminiscent of poor man's renormalization group flow used to describe equilibrium systems. For bare easy-plane ferromagnetic couplings, this allows us to follow the formation of the Kondo screening cloud as the dynamics crosses over from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic behavior. On the other side of the phase diagram, our scheme makes it possible to measure quantum corrections to the well-known Korringa law describing the temperature dependence of the impurity spin relaxation rate. Theoretical results discussed in our paper can be measured using currently available experimental techniques.

Direct probing of the Mott crossover in the SU($N$) Fermi-Hubbard model

The Fermi-Hubbard model (FHM) is a cornerstone of modern condensed matter theory. Developed for interacting electrons in solids, which typically exhibit SU($2$) symmetry, it describes a wide range of phenomena, such as metal to insulator transitions and magnetic order. Its generalized SU($N$)-symmetric form, originally applied to multi-orbital materials such as transition-metal oxides, has recently attracted much interest owing to the availability of ultracold SU($N$)-symmetric atomic gases. Here we report on a detailed experimental investigation of the SU($N$)-symmetric FHM using local probing of an atomic gas of ytterbium in an optical lattice to determine the equation of state through different interaction regimes. We prepare a low-temperature SU($N$)-symmetric Mott insulator and characterize the Mott crossover, representing important steps towards probing predicted novel SU($N$)-magnetic phases.

Quantum Noise Correlation Experiments with Ultracold Atoms

Noise correlation analysis is a detection tool for spatial structures and spatial correlations in the in-trap density distribution of ultracold atoms. In this book chapter, we discuss the implementation, properties and limitations of the method applied to ensembles of ultracold atoms in optical lattices, and describe some instances where it has been applied.

Quantum Spin Dynamics of Mode-Squeezed Luttinger Liquids in Two-Component Atomic Gases

We report on the observation of the phase dynamics of interacting one-dimensional ultracold bosonic gases with two internal degrees of freedom. By controlling the non-linear atomic interactions close to a Feshbach resonance we are able to induce a phase diffusive many-body spin dynamics. We monitor this dynamical evolution by Ramsey interferometry, supplemented by a novel, many-body echo technique. We find that the time evolution of the system is well described by a Luttinger liquid initially prepared in a multimode squeezed state. Our approach allows us to probe the non-equilibrium evolution of one-dimensional many-body quantum systems.
