Entanglement and Correlations near Extremality: CFTs dual to Reissner-Nordström AdS${}_5$

We use the AdS/CFT correspondence to study models of entanglement and correlations between two $d=4$ CFTs in thermofield double states at finite chemical potential. Our bulk spacetimes are planar Reissner-Nordström AdS black holes. We compute both thermo-mutual information and the two-point correlators of large-dimension scalar operators, focussing on the small-temperature behavior -- an infrared limit with behavior similar to that seen at large times. The interesting feature of this model is of course that the entropy density remains finite as $T \rightarrow 0$ while the bulk geometry develops an infinite throat. This leads to a logarithmic divergence in the scale required for non-zero mutual information between equal-sized strips in the two CFTs, though the mutual information between one entire CFT and a finite-sized strip in the other can remain non-zero even at $T=0$. Furthermore, despite the infinite throat, there can be extremally charged operators for which the two-point correlations remain finite as $T \rightarrow 0$. This suggests an interestingly mixed picture in which some aspects of the entanglement remain localized on scales set by the chemical potential, while others shift to larger and larger scales. We also comment on implications for the localized-quasiparticle picture of entanglement.

Extending the nonsingular hyperscaling violating spacetimes

Lifshitz and hyperscaling violating geometries, which provide a holographic description of non-relativistic field theories, generically have a singularity in the infrared region of the geometry, where tidal forces for freely falling observers diverge, but there is a special class of hyperscaling violating geometries where this tidal force divergence does not occur. We explicitly construct a smooth extension of the spacetime in this case, and explore the structure of the spacetime. We find that the spacetime has two disconnected boundaries, as in AdS$_2$. We also consider the behaviour of finite-energy excitations of the spacetime at the horizon, arguing that they will have some divergence there.

A strongly coupled zig-zag transition

The zig-zag symmetry transition is a phase transition in 1D quantum wires, in which a Wigner lattice of electrons transitions to two staggered lattices. Previous studies model this transition as a Luttinger liquid coupled to a Majorana fermion. The model exhibits interesting RG flows, involving quenching of velocities in subsectors of the theory. We suggest an extension of the model which replaces the Majorana fermion by a more general CFT; this includes an experimentally realizable case with two Majorana fermions. We analyse the RG flow both in field theory and using AdS/CFT techniques in the large central charge limit of the CFT. The model has a rich phase structure with new qualitative features, already in the two Majorana fermion case. The AdS/CFT calculation involves considering back reaction in space-time to capture subleading effects.

Boundary conditions for metric fluctuations in Lifshitz

We consider the quantisation of linearised fluctuations of the metric and matter fields about a Lifshitz background, exploring the possibility of alternative boundary conditions, allowing the slow fall-off modes to fluctuate. We find that for $z >2$, slow fall-off modes for some of the linearised fluctuations are normalizable, which opens up the possibility of considering alternative boundary conditions. Analysing stability, we find that alternative boundary conditions for the momentum density are allowed, but alternative boundary conditions for the energy density lead to an instability of the type we recently discovered in a similar analysis for scalar fields on a fixed Lifshitz background. Our investigation is in the context of the simple massive vector model, but we would expect the conclusions to be more general.

Boundary conditions for scalars in Lifshitz

We consider the quantisation of scalar fields on a Lifshitz background, exploring the possibility of alternative boundary conditions, allowing the slow falloff mode to fluctuate. We show that the scalar field with alternative boundary conditions is normalizable for a larger range of masses than in the AdS case. However, we then find a new instability for alternative boundary conditions, implying that the range of masses where alternative boundary conditions define a well-behaved dual theory is $m_{BF}^2 < m^2 < m^2_{BF} +1$, analogously to the AdS case. The instability is of a novel type, with modes of arbitrarily large momentum which grow exponentially in time; it is therefore essentially a UV effect, and implies that the dual field theory is simply not defined where it appears. We discuss the interpretation in the dual field theory, and give a proposed lower bound on the dimension of scalar operators.

Flows involving Lifshitz solutions

We construct gravity solutions describing renormalization group flows relating relativistic and non-relativistic conformal theories. We work both in a simple phenomenological theory with a massive vector field, and in an N=4, d=6 gauged supergravity theory, which can be consistently embedded in string theory. These flows offer some further insight into holography for Lifshitz geometries: in particular, they enable us to give a description of the field theory dual to the Lifshitz solutions in the latter theory. We also note that some of the AdS and Lifshitz solutions in the N=4, d=6 gauged supergravity theory are dynamically unstable.

States of a chiral 2d CFT

We study the dual description of the self-dual orbifold, a locally AdS_3 spacetime which is a circle fibration over AdS_2 and arises as the near-horizon limit of the extreme BTZ black hole. The geometry has two boundaries; we argue that this should correspond to a saddle-point for two copies of a chiral CFT living on these two boundaries in an entangled state. This picture arises naturally in the near-horizon limit, but there is a potential inconsistency with the bulk physics because of causal connections between the boundaries. We discuss a possible resolution of this puzzle. We also construct geometries which asymptotically approach the self-dual orbifold on a single boundary. These geometries (which contain mild singularities) enable us to explore other states of the dual chiral CFT. One of the geometries corresponds to the ground state of this CFT and can be obtained as a particular near-horizon limit of the BTZ M=0 black hole. The self-dual orbifold is a finite temperature version of this geometry.

Black holes and black strings in plane waves

We investigate the construction of black holes and black strings in vacuum plane wave spacetimes using the method of matched asymptotic expansions. We find solutions of the linearised equations of motion in the asymptotic region for a general source on a plane wave background. We observe that these solutions do not satisfy our previously defined conditions for being asymptotically plane wave. Hence, the space of asymptotically plane wave solutions is restricted. We consider the solution in the near region, treating the plane wave as a perturbation of a black object, and find that there is a regular black string solution but no regular black hole solution.

Spectral Flow of the Non-Supersymmetric Microstates of the D1-D5-KK System

We show that a realisation of spectral flow as a coordinate transformation for asymptotically four-dimensional solutions can be extended to the non-supersymmetric case. We apply this transformation to smooth geometries describing microstates of the D1-D5-KK monopole system in type IIB supergravity compactified on a six-torus, and obtain solutions with an additional momentum charge. We study the supersymmetric and near-core limits of this construction.

Holographic stress tensor for non-relativistic theories

We discuss the calculation of the field theory stress tensor from the dual geometry for two recent proposals for gravity duals of non-relativistic conformal field theories. The first of these has a Schrodinger symmetry including Galilean boosts, while the second has just an anisotropic scale invariance (the Lifshitz case). For the Lifshitz case, we construct an appropriate action principle. We propose a definition of the non-relativistic stress tensor complex for the field theory as an appropriate variation of the action in both cases. In the Schrodinger case, we show that this gives physically reasonable results for a simple black hole solution and agrees with an earlier proposal to determine the stress tensor from the familiar AdS prescription. In the Lifshitz case, we solve the linearised equations of motion for a general perturbation around the background, showing that our stress tensor is finite on-shell.

Dynamical black holes and expanding plasmas

We analyse the global structure of time-dependent geometries dual to expanding plasmas, considering two examples: the boost invariant Bjorken flow, and the conformal soliton flow. While the geometry dual to the Bjorken flow is constructed in a perturbation expansion at late proper time, the conformal soliton flow has an exact dual (which corresponds to a Poincare patch of Schwarzschild-AdS). In particular, we discuss the position and area of event and apparent horizons in the two geometries. The conformal soliton geometry offers a sharp distinction between event and apparent horizon; whereas the area of the event horizon diverges, that of the apparent horizon stays finite and constant. This suggests that the entropy of the corresponding CFT state is related to the apparent horizon rather than the event horizon.

Strings in extremal BTZ black holes

We study the spectrum of the worldsheet theory of the bosonic closed string in the massless and extremal rotating BTZ black holes. We use a hyperbolic Wakimoto representation of the SL(2,R) currents to construct vertex operators for the string modes on these backgrounds. We argue that there are tachyons in the twisted sector, but these are not localised near the horizon. We study the relation to the null orbifold in the limit of vanishing cosmological constant. We also discuss the problem of extending this analysis to the supersymmetric case.

Conformal non-relativistic hydrodynamics from gravity

We show that the recently constructed holographic duals of conformal non-relativistic theories behave hydrodynamically at long distances, and construct the gravitational dual of fluid flows in a long-wavelength approximation. We compute the thermal conductivity of the holographic conformal non-relativistic fluid. The corresponding Prandtl number is equal to one.

Heating up Galilean holography

We embed a holographic description of a quantum field theory with Galilean conformal invariance in string theory. The key observation is that such field theories may be realized as conventional superconformal field theories with a known string theory embedding, twisted by the R-symmetry in a light-like direction. Using the Null Melvin Twist, we construct the appropriate dual geometry and its non-extremal generalization. From the nonzero temperature solution we determine the equation of state. We also discuss the hydrodynamic regime of these non-relativistic plasmas and show that the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio takes the universal value one over four pi typical of strongly interacting field theories with gravity duals.

Asymptotically Plane Wave Spacetimes and their Actions

We propose a definition of asymptotically plane wave spacetimes in vacuum gravity in terms of the asymptotic falloff of the metric, and discuss the relation to previously constructed exact solutions. We construct a well-behaved action principle for such spacetimes, using the formalism developed by Mann and Marolf. We show that this action is finite on-shell and that the variational principle is well-defined for solutions of vacuum gravity satisfying our asymptotically plane wave falloff conditions.

Classical and quantum gravity of brane black holes

We test the holographic conjecture for brane black holes: that a full classical 5D solution will correspond to a quantum corrected 4D black hole. We show that a Schwarzschild-AdS black string in the bulk can be consistently interpreted as a quantum-corrected black hole on the brane, but the form of the quantum corrections is unlike what we would expect. The stress tensor extracted from the bulk solution does not have a thermal component corresponding to Hawking radiation outside the black hole. We compare this strong coupling prediction to a weak coupling calculation to study the differences in detail. We comment on implications for asymptotically flat black holes and for black holes localised in the extra dimension.

Winding tachyons in BTZ

Analysing closed string tachyon condensation will improve our understanding of spacetime in string theory. We study the string spectrum on a BTZ black hole spacetime supported by NS-NS flux, which provides a calculable example where we would expect to find a quasi-localised tachyon. We find that there is a winding tachyon when the black hole horizon is smaller than the string scale, as expected. However, due to effects of the NS-NS B field, this tachyon is not localised in the region where the spatial circle is string scale. We also discuss the relation to the Milne orbifold in the limit near the singularity.

Non-supersymmetric microstates of the D1-D5-KK system

We construct a discrete family of smooth non-supersymmetric three charge geometries carrying D1 brane, D5 brane and Kaluza-Klein monopole charges in Type IIB supergravity compactified on a six-torus, which can be interpreted as the geometric description of some special states of the brane system. These solutions are asymptotically flat in four dimensions, and generalise previous supersymmetric solutions. The solutions have a qualitatively similar structure to previous non-supersymmetric smooth solutions carrying D1 and D5 brane charges in five dimensions, and indeed can be viewed as the five-dimensional system placed at the core of a Kaluza-Klein monopole. The geometries are smooth, free of horizons and do not have closed timelike curves. One notable difference from the five-dimensional case is that the four-dimensional geometry has no ergoregion.
