Optical study of lithographically defined, subwavelength plasmonic wires and their coupling to embedded quantum emitters

We present an optical investigation of surface plasmon polaritons propagating along nanoscale Au-wires, lithographically defined on GaAs substrates. A two-axis confocal microscope was used to perform spatially and polarization resolved measurements in order to confirm the guiding of surface plasmon polaritons over lengths ranging from $5-20 \mu m$ along nanowires with a lateral dimension of only $\approx 100 nm$. Finite difference time domain simulations are used to corroborate our experimental observations and highlight the potential to couple proximal quantum dot emitters to propagating plasmon modes in such extreme sub-wavelength devices. Our findings are of strong relevance for the development of semiconductor based integrated plasmonic and active quantum plasmonic nanosystems that merge quantum emitters with nanoscale plasmonic elements.

Voltage Induced Hidden Symmetry and Photon Entanglement Generation in a Single, Site-Selected Quantum Dot

Present proposals for the realisation of entangled photon pair sources using the radiative decay of the biexciton in semiconductor quantum dots are limited by the need to enforce degeneracy of the two intermediate, single exciton states. We show how this requirement is lifted if the biexciton binding energy can be tuned to zero and we demonstrate this unbinding of the biexciton in a single, pre-positioned InAs quantum dot subject to a lateral electric field. Full Configuration-Interaction calculations are presented that reveal how the biexciton is unbound through manipulation of the electron-hole Coulomb interaction and the consequent introduction of Hidden Symmetry.

Second-order nonlinear mixing in planar photonic crystal microcavities

Second-harmonic and sum-frequency mixing phenomena associated with 3D-localized photonic modes are studied in InP-based planar photonic crystal microcavities excited by short-pulse radiation near 1550 nm. Three-missing-hole microcavities that support two closely-spaced modes exhibit rich second-order scattering spectra that reflect intra- and inter-mode mixing via the bulk InP chi(2) during ring-down after excitation by the broadband, resonant pulse. Simultaneous excitation with a non-resonant source results in tunable second-order radiation from the microcavity.

Second-Order Nonlinear Mixing of Two Modes in a Planar Photonic Crystal Microcavity

Polarization-resolved second-harmonic spectra are obtained from the resonant modes of a two-dimensional planar photonic crystal microcavity patterned in a free-standing InP slab. The photonic crystal microcavity is comprised of a single missing-hole defect in a hexagonal photonic crystal host formed with elliptically-shaped holes. The cavity supports two orthogonally-polarized resonant modes split by 60 wavenumbers. Sum-frequency data are reported from the nonlinear interaction of the two coherently excited modes, and the polarization dependence is explained in terms of the nonlinear susceptibility tensor of the host InP.
