Assessing Regulatory Risk in Personal Financial Advice Documents: a Pilot Study

Assessing regulatory compliance of personal financial advice is currently a complex manual process. In Australia, only 5%- 15% of advice documents are audited annually and 75% of these are found to be non-compliant(ASI 2018b). This paper describes a pilot with an Australian government regulation agency where Artificial Intelligence (AI) models based on techniques such natural language processing (NLP), machine learning and deep learning were developed to methodically characterise the regulatory risk status of personal financial advice documents. The solution provides traffic light rating of advice documents for various risk factors enabling comprehensive coverage of documents in the review and allowing rapid identification of documents that are at high risk of non-compliance with government regulations. This pilot serves as a case study of public-private partnership in developing AI systems for government and public sector.

Branching Brownian motion in strip: survival near criticality

We consider a branching Brownian motion with linear drift in which particles are killed on exiting the interval (0,K) and study the evolution of the process on the event of survival as the width of the interval shrinks to the critical value at which survival is no longer possible. We combine spine techniques and a backbone decomposition to obtain exact asymptotics for the near-critical survival probability. This allows us to deduce the existence of a quasi-stationary limit result for the process conditioned on survival which reveals that the backbone thins down to a spine as we approach criticality. This paper is motivated by recent work on survival of near critical branching Brownian motion with absorption at the origin by Aidekon and Harris as well as the work of Berestycki, Berestycki and Schweinsberg.

Branching Brownian motion: Almost sure growth along scaled paths

We give a proof of a result on the growth of the number of particles along chosen paths in a branching Brownian motion. The work follows the approach of classical large deviations results, in which paths in $C[0,1]$ are rescaled onto $C[0,T]$ for large $T$. The methods used are probabilistic and take advantage of modern spine techniques.

Measure changes with extinction

We consider a change of measure by a martingale $Z_t$ and clarify that in general $1/Z_t$ is only a supermartingale under the changed measure. We then give a necessary and sufficient condition for the event that the limit of the martingale is zero to coincide with the event that the martingale hits zero in finite time (up to a set of zero probability).

Branching Brownian motion: Almost sure growth along unscaled paths

We give new results on the growth of the number of particles in a dyadic branching Brownian motion which follow within a fixed distance of a path $f:[0,\infty)\to \mathbb{R}$. We show that it is possible to count the number of particles without rescaling the paths. Our results reveal that the number of particles along certain paths can oscillate dramatically. The methods used are entirely probabilistic, taking advantage of the spine technique developed by, amongst others, Lyons et al, Kyprianou, and Hardy & Harris.
