Quantum ergodicity in the Benjamini--Schramm limit for locally symmetric spaces

We prove that for almost all symmetric spaces $X$ and for any sequence of compact locally symmetric spaces $Y_n$ which is uniformly discrete, has a uniform spectral gap, and converges in the sense of Benjamini--Schramm to $X$, the joint eigenfunctions of all invariant differential operators on $Y_n$ delocalize on average when their spectral parameters are taken to lie in a fixed spectral window.

Uniform bounds and uncertainty for asymptotics of representations of $p$-adic ${\rm GL}_N$

We prove two results on the growth of dimensions of fixed vectors of representations $\pi$ of $p$-adic ${\rm GL}_N$ under principal congruence subgroups: First, a uniform bound on the growth of fixed vectors in terms of the GK-dimension $\pi$, which we extend to a uniform bound on the Harish-Chandra--Howe coefficients. Second, for $\pi$ unitary, a quantitative relationship between the GK-dimension of $\pi$ and the rate of decay of its matrix coefficients. These results are independent of one another and proved in the framework of the Langlands and Zelevinsky classifications.

On Bounded Advice Classes

Advice classes in computational complexity have frequently been used to model real-world scenarios encountered in cryptography, quantum computing and machine learning, where some computational task may be broken down into a preprocessing and deployment phase, each associated with a different complexity. However, in these scenarios, the advice given by the preprocessing phase must still be generated by some (albeit more powerful) bounded machine, which is not the case in conventional advice classes. To better model these cases we develop `bounded advice classes', where a more powerful Turing machine generates advice for another, less powerful, Turing machine. We then focus on the question of when various classes generate useful advice, to answer this we connect bounded advice to unary languages. This connection allows us to state various conditional and unconditional results on the utility of advice generated by $\mathsf{EXP}$, $\mathsf{NP}$, $\mathsf{BQP}$, $\mathsf{PSPACE}$, and more. We study the relations between bounded advice classes, quantum bounded advice classes, and randomised bounded advice. We also examine how each of these concepts interact with recently introduced classes, like $\mathsf{BPP/samp}$. Our results also improve the state of the art in existing research on the complexity of advice functions.

Petersson norms of Borcherds theta lifts to O(1, 8n+1) with applications to injectivity and sup-norm bounds

We give an explicit formula for the Petersson norms of theta lifts from Maass cusp forms of level one to cusp forms on orthogonal groups O(1,8n+1). Our formula explicitly determines archimedean local factors of the norms. As an application, we obtain the injectivity of the lifting of Maass forms and bounds on the sup-norm of cusp forms on these orthogonal groups in terms of their Laplace eigenvalues.

Subconvexity for $L$-functions on ${\rm U}(n) \times {\rm U}(n+1)$ in the depth aspect

Let $E/F$ be a CM extension of number fields, and let $H < G$ be a unitary Gan--Gross--Prasad pair defined with respect to $E/F$ that is compact at infinity. We consider a family $\mathcal{F}$ of automorphic representations of $G \times H$ that is varying at a finite place $w$ that splits in $E/F$. We assume that the representations in $\mathcal{F}$ satisfy certain conditions, including being tempered and distinguished by the GGP period. For a representation $\pi \times \pi_H \in \mathcal{F}$ with base change $\Pi \times \Pi_H$ to ${\rm GL}_{n+1}(E) \times {\rm GL}_n(E)$, we prove a subconvex bound \[ L(1/2, \Pi \times \Pi_H^\vee) \ll C(\Pi \times \Pi_H^\vee)^{1/4 - \delta} \] for any $\delta < \tfrac{1}{4n(n+1)(2n^2 + 3n + 3)}$. Our proof uses the unitary Ichino--Ikeda period formula to relate the central $L$-value to an automorphic period, before bounding that period using the amplification method of Iwaniec--Sarnak.

Concentration properties of theta lifts on orthogonal groups

Let $n>m\geqslant 1$ be integers with $n+m\geqslant 4$ even. We prove the existence of Maass forms with large sup norms on anisotropic ${\rm O}(n,m)$, by combining a counting argument with a new period relation showing that a certain orthogonal period on ${\rm O}(n,m)$ distinguishes theta lifts from ${\rm Sp}_{2m}$. This generalizes a method of Rudnick and Sarnak in the rank one case, when $m = 1$. Our lower bound is naturally expressed as a ratio of the Plancherel measures for the groups ${\rm O}(n,m)$ and ${\rm Sp}_{2m}(\mathbb{R})$, up to logarithmic factors, and strengthens the lower bounds of our previous paper for such groups. In the case of odd-dimensional hyperbolic spaces, the growth exponent we obtain improves on a result of Donnelly, and is optimal under the purity conjecture of Sarnak.

Lower bounds for Maass forms on semisimple groups

Let $G$ be an anisotropic semisimple group over a totally real number field $F$. Suppose that $G$ is compact at all but one infinite place $v_0$. In addition, suppose that $G_{v_0}$ is $\mathbb{R}$-almost simple, not split, and has a Cartan involution defined over $F$. If $Y$ is a congruence arithmetic manifold of non-positive curvature associated to $G$, we prove that there exists a sequence of Laplace eigenfunctions on $Y$ whose sup norms grow like a power of the eigenvalue.

Asymptotic trace formula for the Hecke operators

Given integers $m$, $n$ and $k$, we give an explicit formula with an optimal error term (with square root cancelation) for the Petersson trace formula involving the $m$-th and $n$-th Fourier coefficients of an orthonormal basis of $S_k(N)^*$ (the weight $k$ newforms with fixed square-free level $N$) provided that $|4 \pi \sqrt{mn}- k|=o(k^{\frac{1}{3}})$. Moreover, we establish an explicit formula with a power saving error term for the trace of the Hecke operator $\mathcal{T}_n^*$ on $S_k(N)^*$ averaged over $k$ in a short interval. By bounding the second moment of the trace of $\mathcal{T}_{n}$ over a larger interval, we show that the trace of $\mathcal{T}_n$ is unusually large in the range $|4 \pi \sqrt{n}- k| = o(n^{\frac{1}{6}})$. As an application, for any fixed prime $p$ with $\gcd(p,N)=1$, we show that there exists a sequence $\{k_n\}$ of weights such that the error term of Weyl's law for $\mathcal{T}_p$ is unusually large and violates the prediction of arithmetic quantum chaos. In particular, this generalizes the result of Gamburd, Jakobson and Sarnak~\cite[Theorem 1.4]{Gamburd} with an improved exponent.

Endoscopy and cohomology of U(n,1)

By assuming the endoscopic classification of automorphic representations on inner forms of unitary groups, which is currently work in progress by Kaletha, Minguez, Shin, and White, we bound the growth of cohomology in congruence towers of locally symmetric spaces associated to $U(n,1)$. In the case of lattices arising from Hermitian forms, we conjecture that the growth exponents we obtain are sharp in all degrees.

On the number of harmonic frames

There is a finite number $h_{n,d}$ of tight frames of $n$ distinct vectors for $\mathbb{C}^d$ which are the orbit of a vector under a unitary action of the cyclic group $\mathbb{Z}_n$. These cyclic harmonic frames (or geometrically uniform tight frames) are used in signal analysis and quantum information theory, and provide many tight frames of particular interest. Here we investigate the conjecture that $h_{n,d}$ grows like $n^{d-1}$. By using a result of Laurent which describes the set of solutions of algebraic equations in roots of unity, we prove the asymptotic estimate $$ h_{n,d} \approx {n^d \over φ(n)}\ge n^{d-1}, \qquad n\to\infty. $$ By using a group theoretic approach, we also give some exact formulas for $h_{n,d}$, and estimate the number of cyclic harmonic frames up to projective unitary equivalence.

Endoscopy and cohomology of a quasi-split U(4)

We prove asymptotic upper bounds for the $L^2$ Betti numbers of the locally symmetric spaces associated to a quasi-split $U(4)$. These manifolds are 8-dimensional, and we prove bounds in degrees 2 and 3, with the behaviour in the other degrees being well understood. In degree 3, we conjecture that these bounds are sharp. Our main tool is the endoscopic classification of automorphic representations of U(N) by Mok.

$L^p$ norms of higher rank eigenfunctions and bounds for spherical functions

We prove almost sharp upper bounds for the $L^p$ norms of eigenfunctions of the full ring of invariant differential operators on a compact locally symmetric space, as well as their restrictions to maximal flat subspaces. Our proof combines techniques from semiclassical analysis with harmonic theory on reductive groups, and makes use of new asymptotic bounds for spherical functions that are of independent interest.

Local bounds for $L^p$ norms of Maass forms in the level aspect

We apply techniques from harmonic analysis to study the $L^p$ norms of Maass forms of varying level on a quaternion division algebra. Our first result gives a candidate for the local bound for the sup norm in terms of the level, which is new when the level is not squarefree. The second result is a bound for $L^p$ norms in the level aspect that is analogous to Sogge's theorem on $L^p$ norms of Laplace eigenfunctions.

Geodesic restrictions of arithmetic eigenfunctions

Let X be an arithmetic hyperbolic surface, ψa Hecke-Maass form, and l a geodesic segment on X. We obtain a power saving over the local bound of Burq-Gérard-Tzvetkov for the L^2 norm of ψrestricted to l, by extending the technique of arithmetic amplification developed by Iwaniec and Sarnak. We also improve the local bounds for various Fourier coefficients of ψalong l.
