Multi-species breath biomarker profiling with an ultra-broadband (2.9-11.5 μm) spectroscopic platform

Online, comprehensive molecular profiling of exhaled breath provides a non-invasive window into human metabolism, yet current optical platforms are restricted by narrow instantaneous spectral coverage. Here, we present a novel ultra-broadband mid-infrared spectroscopic platform that enables simultaneous, high-sensitivity detection of a comprehensive profile of breath biomarkers. By integrating an intrapulse difference-frequency generation (IDFG) supercontinuum source spanning 2.9-11.5 $μ$m (2580 cm$^{-1}$) with a custom-built Fourier transform spectrometer, we achieve a spectral resolution of 0.1 cm$^{-1}$ - surpassing current laser-based approaches. Combined with a standardized online sampling system, the platform achieves sensitivities in the tens of parts per billion over three minutes, resolving dynamic metabolic changes of ammonia, methane, isoprene, acetone, carbon monoxide, and nitrous oxide. We demonstrate the system's utility through proof-of-concept case studies tracking responses to fasting, protein intake, and smoking. This calibration-free platform establishes a powerful and versatile tool for online breath analysis, with broad potential in clinical diagnostics and exposure monitoring.

Long-wave infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy with enhanced and scalable sensitivity

We report a broadband long-wave infrared Fourier transform spectrometer with sensitivity exceeding that of previously reported direct-detection implementations. The system combines dual-comb spectroscopy with electro-optic sampling, multi-channel parallel near-infrared detection using InGaAs photodiodes, and real-time GPU-based computational corrections of multiple spectroscopy signals. Detection limits of 0.3 ppb for NH$_{3}$ and 2 ppb for C$_{2}$H$_{4}$ are achieved in 500 s, corresponding to 20x and 40x sensitivity improvements over earlier LWIR demonstrations, while maintaining high 0.0027 cm$^{-1}$ spectral resolution and broad spectral coverage. The architecture supports scalable sensitivity through increased detector count and enables rapid multispecies analysis of complex gas mixtures.

Time-resolved mid-infrared dual-comb spectroscopy

Dual-comb spectroscopy can provide broad spectral bandwidth and high spectral resolution in a short acquisition time, enabling time-resolved measurements. Specifically, spectroscopy in the mid-infrared wavelength range is of particular interest, since most of the molecules have their strongest rotational-vibrational transitions in this "fingerprint" region. Here we report time-resolved mid-infrared dual-comb spectroscopy for the first time, covering ~300 nm bandwidth around 3.3 μm with 6 GHz spectral resolution and 20 μs temporal resolution. As a demonstration, we study a CH4/He gas mixture in an electric discharge, while the discharge is modulated between dark and glow regimes. We simultaneously monitor the production of C2H6 and the vibrational excitation of CH4 molecules, observing the dynamics of both processes. This approach to broadband, high-resolution, and time-resolved mid-infrared spectroscopy provides a new tool for monitoring the kinetics of fast chemical reactions, with potential applications in various fields such as physical chemistry and plasma/combustion analysis.

Vernier effect within a versatile femtosecond optical parametric oscillator for broad-tunable, high-repetition-rate oscillator

Within a synchronously pumped optical parametric oscillator (SPOPO), the inherent synchronism between the pump and the resonating signal is the magic to partly transfer the coherence property of the pump to the signal. In our demonstration, Vernier effect is observed within a femtosecond SPOPO by simply detuning the FSR of the cavity, generating signal pulses at tunable repetition rate from several GHz to 1 THz with a maximum 22.58 nm full width half maximum (FWHM) bandwidth supporting 160 fs pulses covering the C- and L-bands of the telecom wavelength region. This technique offers a simple method of active filtering of dense frequency comb lines instead of using Fabry-Pérot (FP) cavities with complex locking system for astro-comb generation. Beside, as a promising source for frequency combs with tunable and large comb-spacing, it offers potential opportunities for applications such as high speed coherent data transmission, line-by-line pulse shaping, optical clocks and precision metrology.

Broadly, independent-tunable, dual-wavelength mid-infrared ultrafast optical parametric oscillator

We demonstrate a two-crystal mid-infrared dual-wavelength optical parametric oscillator, synchronously pumped by a high power femtosecond Yb:fiber laser. The singly-resonant ring cavity, containing two periodically poled lithium niobate crystals, is capable of generating two synchronized idler wavelengths, independently tunable over 30 THz in the 2.9 - 4.2 μm wavelength region, due to the cascaded quadratic nonlinear effect. The independent tunability of the two idlers makes the optical parametric oscillator a promising source for ultrafast pulse generation towards the THz wavelength region, based on different frequency generation. In addition, the observed frequency doubled idler within the crystal indicates the possibility to realize a broadband optical self-phase locking between pump, signal, idler and higher order generated parametric lights.
