Quantum control and long-range quantum correlations in dynamical Casimir arrays

The recent observation of the dynamical Casimir effect in a modulated superconducting waveguide, coronating thirty years of world-wide research, empowered the quantum technology community with a powerful tool to create entangled photons on-chip. In this work we show how, going beyond the single waveguide paradigm using a scalable array, it is possible to create multipartite nonclassical states, with the possibility to control the long-range quantum correlations of the emitted photons. In particular, our finite-temperature theory shows how maximally entangled $NOON$ states can be engineered in a realistic setup. The results here presented open the way to new kinds of quantum fluids of light, arising from modulated vacuum fluctuations in linear systems.

Light-matter decoupling and $A^2$ term detection in superconducting circuits

We study the spontaneous emission of a qubit interacting with a one-dimensional waveguide through a realistic minimal-coupling interaction. We show that the diamagnetic term $A^2$ leads to an effective decoupling of a single qubit from the electromagnetic field. This effects is observable at any range of qubit-photon couplings. For this we study a setup consisting of a transmon that is suspended over a transmission line. We prove that the relative strength of the $A^2$ term is controlled with the qubit-line separation and show that, as a consequence, the spontaneous emission rate of the suspended transmon onto the line can increase with such separation, instead of decreasing.

Terahertz emission from AC Stark-split asymmetric intersubband transitions

Transitions between the two states of an AC Stark-split doublet are forbidden in centro-symmetric systems, and thus almost impossible to observe in experiments performed with atomic clouds. However, electrons trapped in nanoscopic heterostructures can behave as artificial atoms, with the advantage that the wavefunction symmetry can be broken by using asymmetric confining potentials. Here we develop the many-body theory describing the intra-doublet emission of a resonantly pumped intersubband transition in a doped asymmetric quantum well, showing that in such a system the intra-doublet emission can be orders of magnitude higher than in previously studied systems. This emission channel, which lies in the terahertz range, and whose frequency depends upon the pump power, opens the way to the realization of a new class of monolithic and tunable terahertz emitters.

Radical-pair model of magnetoreception with spin-orbit coupling

The mechanism used by migratory birds to orientate themselves using the geomagnetic field is still a mystery in many species. The radical pair mechanism, in which very weak magnetic fields can influence certain types of spin-dependent chemical reactions, leading to biologically observable signals, has recently imposed itself as one of the most promising candidates for certain species. This is thanks both to its extreme sensitivity and its capacity to reproduce results from behavioral studies. Still, in order to gain a directional sensitivity, an anisotropic mechanism is needed. Recent proposals have explored the possibility that such an anisotropy is due to the electron-nucleus hyperfine interaction. In this work we explore a different possibility, in which the anisotropy is due to spin-orbit coupling between the electron spin and its angular momentum. We will show how a spin-orbit-coupling-based magnetic compass can have performances comparable with the usually-studied nuclear-hyperfine based mechanism. Our results could thus help researchers actively looking for candidate biological molecules which may host magnetoreceptive functions, both to describe magnetoreception in birds as well as to develop artificial chemical compass systems.

Comment on "System-environment coupling derived by Maxwell's boundary conditions from the weak to the ultrastrong light-matter coupling regime"

In a recent work [arXiv:1301.3960], Bamba and Ogawa developed a microscopic model describing the field of a photonic cavity coupled to a matter exciton-like resonance. One of the results they obtain studying such a model is that, in the ultrastrong coupling regime, usually safe approaches can give wrong results for the dissipation rates of the polaritonic excitations. In particular the dissipation rates calculated applying the rotating wave approximation on the system-environment coupling qualitatively differ from the ones calculated using a microscopic theory based on the quantum electrodynamics for dielectric media. Here I show that this result is an artifact, caused by an inconsistent application of the rotating wave approximation and by a questionable parameter choice.

Terahertz lasing from intersubband polariton-polariton scattering in asymmetric quantum wells

Electric dipole transitions between different cavity polariton branches or between dressed atomic states with the same excitation number are strictly forbidden in centro-symmetric systems. For doped quantum wells in semiconductor microcavities, the strong coupling between an intersubband transition in the conduction band and a cavity mode produces two branches of intersubband cavity polaritons, whose normal-mode energy splitting is tunable and can be in the terahertz region. Here, we show that, by using asymmetric quantum wells, it is possible to have allowed dipolar transitions between different polaritonic branches, leading to the emission of terahertz photons. We present a quantum field theory for such a system and predict that high-efficiency, widely tunable terahertz lasing can be obtained.

Quantum phases of a multimode bosonic field coupled to flat electronic bands

We investigate the quantum phases of systems in which a multimode bosonic field is coupled to the transitions between two flat electronic bands. In the literature, such systems are usually modeled using a single or multimode Dicke model, leading to the prediction of superradiant quantum phase transitions for large enough couplings. We show that the physics of these systems is remarkably richer than previously expected, with the system continuously interpolating between a Dicke model exhibiting a superradiant quantum phase transition and a quantum Rabi model with no phase transition.

Ultra-Strong Light-Matter Coupling Regime with Polariton Dots

The regime of ultrastrong light-matter interaction has been investigated theoretically and experimentally, using zero-dimensional electromagnetic resonators coupled with an electronic transition between two confined states of a semiconductor quantum well. We have measured a splitting between the coupled modes that amounts to 48% of the energy transition, the highest ratio ever observed in a light-matter coupled system. Our analysis, based on a microscopic quantum theory, shows that the nonlinear polariton splitting, a signature of this regime, is a dynamical effect arising from the self-interaction of the collective electronic polarization with its own emitted field.

Many-body physics of intersubband polaritons

Intersubband polaritons are light-matter excitations originating from the strong coupling between an intersubband quantum well electronic transition and a microcavity photon mode. In this paper we study how the Coulomb electron-electron interaction and the Pauli saturation of the electronic transitions affect the physics of intersubband polaritons. We develop a microscopic many-body theory for the physics of such composite bosonic excitations in a microcavity-embedded two-dimensional electron gas. As a first application, we calculate the modification of the depolarization shifts and the efficiency of intersubband polariton-polariton scattering processes.

Ultrastrong coupling of the cyclotron transition of a two-dimensional electron gas to a THz metamaterial

Artificial cavity photon resonators with ultrastrong light-matter interactions are attracting interest both in semiconductor and superconducting systems, due to the possibility of manipulating the cavity quantum electrodynamic ground state with controllable physical properties. We report here experiments showing ultrastrong light-matter coupling in a terahertz metamaterial where the cyclotron transition of a high mobility two-dimensional electron gas is coupled to the photonic modes of an array of electronic split-ring resonators. We observe a normalized coupling ratio $\fracΩ{ω_c}=0.58$ between the vacuum Rabi frequency $Ω$ and the cyclotron frequency $ω_c$. Our system appears to be scalable in frequency and could be brought to the microwave spectral range with the potential of strongly controlling the magnetotransport properties of a high-mobility 2DEG.

Quantum theory of intersubband polarons

We present a microscopic quantum theory of intersubband polarons, quasiparticles originated from the coupling between intersubband transitions and longitudinal optical phonons. To this aim we develop a second quantized theory taking into account both the Fröhlich interaction between phonons and intersubband transitions and the Coulomb interaction between the intersubband transitions themselves. Our results show that the coupling between the phonons and the intersubband transitions is extremely intense, thanks both to the collective nature of the intersubband excitations and to the natural tight confinement of optical phonons. Not only the coupling is strong enough to spectroscopically resolve the resonant splitting between the modes (strong coupling regime), but it can become comparable to the bare frequency of the excitations (ultrastrong coupling regime). We thus predict the possibility to exploit intersubband polarons both for applied optoelectronic research, where a precise control of the phonon resonances is needed, and also to observe fundamental quantum vacuum physics, typical of the ultrastrong coupling regime.

Carnot's theorem for nonthermal stationary reservoirs

Carnot's theorem poses a fundamental limit on the maximum efficiency achievable from an engine that works between two reservoirs at thermal equilibrium. We extend this result to the case of arbitrary nonthermal stationary reservoirs, even with quantum coherence. In order to do this we prove that a single nonthermal reservoir is formally equivalent to multiple equilibrium ones. Finally, we discuss the possibility of realizing an engine that works at unit efficiency by exploiting quantum coherence present in the reservoir.

Quantum Szilard Engine

The Szilard engine (SZE) is the quintessence of Maxwell's demon, which can extract the work from a heat bath by utilizing information. We present the first complete quantum analysis of the SZE, and derive an analytic expression of the quantum-mechanical work performed by a quantum SZE containing an arbitrary number of molecules, where it is crucial to regard the process of insertion or removal of a wall as a legitimate thermodynamic process. We find that more (less) work can be extracted from the bosonic (fermionic) SZE due to the indistinguishability of identical particles.

Quantum limit of photothermal cooling

We study the problem of cooling a mechanical oscillator using the photothermal (bolometric) force. Contrary to previous attempts to model this system, we take into account the noise effects due to the granular nature of photon absorption. This allows us to tackle the cooling problem down to the noise dominated regime and to find reasonable estimates for the lowest achievable phonon occupation in the cantilever.

Ultrastrong coupling between a cavity resonator and the cyclotron transition of a 2D electron gas in the case of integer filling factor

We investigate theoretically the coupling between a cavity resonator and the cyclotron transition of a two dimensional electron gas under an applied perpendicular magnetic field. We derive and diagonalize an effective quantum Hamiltonian describing the magnetopolariton excitations of the two dimensional electron gas for the case of integer filling factors. The limits of validity of the present approach are critically discussed. The dimensionless vacuum Rabi frequency $Ω_0/ω_0$ (i.e., normalized to the cyclotron frequency $ω_0$) is shown to scale as $\sqrt{α\: n_{QW} ν}$, where $α$ is the fine structure constant, $n_{QW}$ is the number of quantum wells and $ν$ is the filling factor in each well. We show that with realistic parameters of a high-mobility semiconductor two dimensional electron gas, the dimensionless coupling $Ω_0/ω_0$ can be much larger than 1 in the case of $ν\gg 1$, the latter condition being typically realized for cyclotron transitions in the microwave range. Implications of such ultrastrong coupling regime are discussed.

Extracavity quantum vacuum radiation from a single qubit

We present a theory of the quantum vacuum radiation that is generated by a fast modulation of the vacuum Rabi frequency of a single two-level system strongly coupled to a single cavity mode. The dissipative dynamics of the Jaynes-Cummings model in the presence of anti-rotating wave terms is described by a generalized master equation including non-Markovian terms. Peculiar spectral properties and significant extracavity quantum vacuum radiation output are predicted for state-of-the-art circuit cavity quantum electrodynamics systems with superconducting qubits.

Light-matter excitations in the ultra-strong coupling regime

In a microcavity, light-matter coupling is quantified by the vacuum Rabi frequency $Ω_R$. When $Ω_R$ is larger than radiative and non-radiative loss rates, the system eigenstates (polaritons) are linear superposition of photonic and electronic excitations, a condition actively investigated in diverse physical implementations. Recently, a quantum electrodynamic regime (ultra-strong coupling) was predicted when $Ω_R$ becomes comparable to the transition frequency. Here we report unambiguous signatures of this regime in a quantum-well intersubband microcavity. Measuring the cavity-polariton dispersion in a room-temperature linear optical experiment, we directly observe the anti-resonant light-matter coupling and the photon-energy renormalization of the vacuum field.

Quantum theory of electron tunneling into intersubband cavity polariton states

Through a non-perturbative quantum theory, we investigate how the quasi-electron excitations of a two-dimensional electron gas are modified by strong coupling to the vacuum field of a microcavity. We show that the electronic dressed states originate from a Fano-like coupling between the bare electron states and the continuum of intersubband cavity polariton excitations. In particular, we calculate the electron spectral function modified by light-matter interactions and its impact on the electronic injection of intersubband cavity polaritons. The domain of validity of the present theoretical results is critically discussed. We show that resonant electron tunneling from a narrow-band injector can selectively excite superradiant states and produce efficient intersubband polariton electroluminescence.
