Action versus energy ground states in nonlinear Schrödinger equations

We investigate the relations between normalized critical points of the nonlinear Schrödinger energy functional and critical points of the corresponding action functional on the associated Nehari manifold. Our first general result is that the ground state levels are strongly related by the following duality result: the (negative) energy ground state level is the Legendre-Fenchel transform of the action ground state level. Furthermore, whenever an energy ground state exists at a certain frequency, then all action ground states with that frequency have the same mass and are energy ground states too. We prove that the converse is in general false and that the action ground state level may fail to be convex. Next we analyze the differentiability of the ground state action level and we provide an explicit expression involving the mass of action ground states. Finally we show that similar results hold also for local minimizers.

New regularity results for scalar conservation laws, and applications to a source-destination model for traffic flows on networks

We focus on entropy admissible solutions of scalar conservation laws in one space dimension and establish new regularity results with respect to time. First, we assume that the flux function $f$ is strictly convex and show that, for every $ x \in \mathbb{R}$, the total variation of the composite function $f \circ u(\cdot, x)$ is controlled by the total variation of the initial datum. Next, we assume that $f$ is monotone and, under no convexity assumption, we show that, for every $x$, the total variation of the left and right trace $u(\cdot, x^\pm)$ is controlled by the total variation of the initial datum. We also exhibit a counter-example showing that in the first result the total variation bound does not extend to the function $u$, or equivalently that in the second result we cannot drop the monotonicity assumption. We then discuss applications to a source-destination model for traffic flows on road networks. We introduce a new approach, based on the analysis of transport equations with irregular coefficients, and, under the assumption that the network only contains so-called T-junctions, we establish existence and uniqueness results for merely bounded data in the class of solutions where the traffic is not congested. Our assumptions on the network and the traffic congestion are basically necessary to obtain well-posedness in view of a counter-example due to Bressan and Yu. We also establish stability and propagation of $BV$ regularity, and this is again interesting in view of recent counter-examples.

Initial-boundary value problems for merely bounded nearly incompressible vector fields in one space dimension

We establish existence and uniqueness results for initial-boundary value problems for transport equations in one space dimension with nearly incompressible velocity fields, under the sole assumption that the fields are bounded. In the case where the velocity field is either nonnegative or nonpositive, one can rely on similar techniques as in the case of the Cauchy problem. Conversely, in the general case we introduce a new and more technically demanding construction, which heuristically speaking relies on a "lagrangian formulation" of the problem, albeit in a highly irregular setting. We also establish stability of the solution in weak and strong topologies, and propagation of the $BV$ regularity. In the case of either nonnegative or nonpositive velocity fields we also establish a $BV$-in-time regularity result, and we exhibit a counterexample showing that the result is false in the case of sign-changing vector fields. To conclude, we establish a trace renormalization property.

Solutions to a cubic Schrödinger system with mixed attractive and repulsive forces in a critical regime

We study the existence of solutions to the cubic Schrödinger system $$ -Δu_i = \sum_{j =1}^m β_{ij} u_j^2u_i + λ_i u_i\ \hbox{in}\ Ω,\ u_i=0\ \hbox{on}\ \partialΩ,\ i =1,\dots,m, $$ when $Ω$ is a bounded domain in $\mathbb R^4, $ $λ_i$ are positive small numbers, $β_{ij}$ are real numbers so that $β_{ii}>0$ and $β_{ij}=β_{ji}$, $i\neq j$. We assemble the components $u_i$ in groups so that all the interaction forces $β_{ij}$ among components of the same group are attractive, i.e. $β_{ij}>0$, while forces among components of different groups are repulsive or weakly attractive, i.e. $β_{ij}<\overlineβ$ for some $\overlineβ$ small. We find solutions such that each component within a given group blows-up around the same point and the different groups blow-up around different points, as all the parameters $λ_i$'s approach zero.

Prescribed mass ground states for a doubly nonlinear Schrödinger equation in dimension one

We investigate the problem of existence and uniqueness of ground states at fixed mass for two families of focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equations on the line. The first family consists of NLS with power nonlinearities concentrated at a point. For such model, we prove existence and uniqueness of ground states at every mass when the nonlinearity power is $L^2-$subcritical and at a threshold value of the mass in the $L^2-$critical regime. The second family is obtained by adding a standard power nonlinearity to the previous setting. In this case, we prove existence and uniqueness at every mass in the doubly subcritical case, namely when both the powers related to the pointwise and the standard nonlinearity are subcritical. If only one power is critical, then existence and uniqueness hold only at masses lower than the critical mass associated to the critical nonlinearity. Finally, in the doubly critical case ground states exist only at critical mass, whose value results from a non--trivial interplay between the two nonlinearities.

Competing nonlinearities in NLS equations as source of threshold phenomena on star graphs

We investigate the existence of ground states for the nonlinear Schrödinger Equation on star graphs with two subcritical focusing nonlinear terms: a standard power nonlinearity, and a delta-type nonlinearity located at the vertex. We find that if the standard nonlinearity is stronger than the pointwise one, then ground states exist for small mass only. On the contrary, if the pointwise nonlinearity prevails, then ground states exist for large mass only. All ground states are radial, in the sense that their restriction to each half-line is always the same function, and coincides with a soliton tail. Finally, if the two nonlinearities are of the same size, then the existence of ground states is insensitive to the value of the mass, and holds only on graphs with a small number of half-lines. Furthermore, we establish the orbital stability of the branch of radial stationary states to which the ground states belong, also in the mass regimes in which there is no ground state.

Uniqueness and non-uniqueness of prescribed mass NLS ground states on metric graphs

We consider the problem of uniqueness of ground states of prescribed mass for the Nonlinear Schrödinger Energy with power nonlinearity on noncompact metric graphs. We first establish that the Lagrange multiplier appearing in the NLS equation is constant on the set of ground states of mass $μ$, up to an at most countable set of masses. Then we apply this result to obtain uniqueness of ground states on two specific noncompact graphs. Finally we construct a graph that admits at least two ground states with the same mass having different Lagrange multipliers. Our proofs are based on careful variational arguments and rearrangement techniques, and hold both for the subcritical range $p\in(2,6)$ and in the critical case $p = 6$.

Peaked and low action solutions of NLS equations on graphs with terminal edges

We consider the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with focusing power-type nonlinearity on compact graphs with at least one terminal edge, i.e. an edge ending with a vertex of degree 1. On the one hand, we introduce the associated action functional and we provide a profile description of positive low action solutions at large frequencies, showing that they concentrate on one terminal edge, where they coincide with suitable rescaling of the unique solution to the corresponding problem on the real line. On the other hand, a Ljapunov-Schmidt reduction procedure is performed to construct one-peaked and multipeaked positive solutions with sufficiently large frequency, exploiting the presence of one or more terminal edges.

$L^2$-critical NLS on noncompact metric graphs with localized nonlinearity: topological and metric features

Carrying on the discussion initiated in (Dovetta-Tentarelli'18), we investigate the existence of ground states of prescribed mass for the $L^2$-critical NonLinear Schrödinger Equation (NLSE) on noncompact metric graphs with localized nonlinearity. Precisely, we show that the existence (or nonexistence) of ground states mainly depends on a parameter called reduced critical mass, and then we discuss how the topological and metric features of the graphs affect such a parameter, establishing some relevant differences with respect to the case of the extended nonlinearity studied by (Adami-Serra-Tilli'17). Our results rely on a thorough analysis of the optimal constant of a suitable variant of the $L^2$-critical Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality.

NLS ground states on metric trees: existence results and open questions

We consider the minimization of the NLS energy on a metric tree, either rooted or unrooted, subject to a mass constraint. With respect to the same problem on other types of metric graphs, several new features appear, such as the existence of minimizers with positive energy, and the emergence of unexpected threshold phenomena. We also study the problem with a radial symmetry constraint that is in principle different from the free problem due to the failure of the Pólya-Szegő inequality for radial rearrangements. A key role is played by a new Poincaré inequality with remainder.

Quantum graphs and dimensional crossover: the honeycomb

We summarize features and results on the problem of the existence of Ground States for the Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation on doubly-periodic metric graphs. We extend the results known for the two--dimensional square grid graph to the honeycomb, made of infinitely-many identical hexagons. Specifically, we show how the coexistence between one--dimensional and two--dimensional scales in the graph structure leads to the emergence of threshold phenomena known as dimensional crossover.

Mass-constrained ground states of the stationary NLSE on periodic metric graphs

We investigate the existence of ground states with fixed mass for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a pure power nonlinearity on periodic metric graphs. Within a variational framework, both the $L^2$-subcritical and critical regimes are studied. In the former case, we establish the existence of global minimizers of the NLS energy for every mass and every periodic graph. In the critical regime, a complete topological characterization is derived, providing conditions which allow or prevent ground states of a certain mass from existing. Besides, a rigorous notion of periodic graph is introduced and discussed.

One-dimensional versions of three-dimensional system: Ground states for the NLS on the spatial grid

We investigate the existence of ground states for the focusing Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation on the infinite three-dimensional cubic grid. We extend the result found for the analogous two-dimensional grid by proving an appropriate Sobolev inequality giving rise to a family of critical Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities that hold for every nonlinearity power from $10/3$ and $6$, namely, from the $L^2$-critical power for the same problem in $\mathbb{R}^3$ to the critical power for the same problem in $\mathbb{R}$. Given the Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality, the problem of the existence of ground state can be treated as already done for the two-dimensional grid.

Variational and stability properties of constant solutions to the NLS equation on compact metric graphs

We consider the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with pure power nonlinearity on a general compact metric graph, and in particular its stationary solutions with fixed mass. Since the graph is compact, for every value of the mass there is a constant solution. Our scope is to analyze (in dependence of the mass) the variational properties of this solution, as a critical point of the energy functional: local and global minimality, and (orbital) stability. We consider both the subcritical regime and the critical one, in which the features of the graph become relevant. We describe how the above properties change according to the topology and the metric properties of the graph.

$Γ$-limit of the cut functional on dense graph sequences

A sequence of graphs with diverging number of nodes is a dense graph sequence if the number of edges grows approximately as for complete graphs. To each such sequence a function, called graphon, can be associated, which contains information about the asymptotic behavior of the sequence. Here we show that the problem of subdividing a large graph in communities with a minimal amount of cuts can be approached in terms of graphons and the $Γ$-limit of the cut functional, and discuss the resulting variational principles on some examples. Since the limit cut functional is naturally defined on Young measures, in many instances the partition problem can be expressed in terms of the probability that a node belongs to one of the communities. Our approach can be used to obtain insights into the bisection problem for large graphs, which is known to be NP-complete.

Dimensional crossover with a continuum of critical exponents for NLS on doubly periodic metric graphs

We investigate the existence of ground states for the focusing nonlinear Schroedinger equation on a prototypical doubly periodic metric graph. When the nonlinearity power is below 4, ground states exist for every value of the mass, while, for every nonlinearity power between 4 (included) and 6 (excluded), a mark of $L^2$-criticality arises, as ground states exist if and only if the mass exceeds a threshold value that depends on the power. This phenomenon can be interpreted as a continuous transition from a two-dimensional regime, for which the only critical power is 4, to a one-dimensional behavior, in which criticality corresponds to the power 6. We show that such a dimensional crossover is rooted in the coexistence of one-dimensional and two-dimensional Sobolev inequalities, leading to a new family of Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities that account for this continuum of critical exponents.

Existence of infinite stationary solutions of the $L^2$-subcritical and critical NLSE on compact metric graphs

We investigate the existence of stationary solutions for the Nonlinear Schrödinger equation on compact metric graphs. In the L2-subcritical setting, we prove the existence of an infinite number of such solutions, for every value of the mass. In the critical regime, this infinity of solutions is established to exists if and only if the mass is lower or equal to a threshold value. Moreover, the relation between this threshold and the topology of the graph is characterized. The investigation is based on variational techniques and some new versions of Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities.
