5d and 4d SCFTs: Canonical Singularities, Trinions and S-Dualities

Canonical threefold singularities in M-theory and Type IIB string theory give rise to superconformal field theories (SCFTs) in 5d and 4d, respectively. In this paper, we study canonical hypersurface singularities whose resolutions contain residual terminal singularities and/or 3-cycles. We focus on a certain class of `trinion' singularities which exhibit these properties. In Type IIB, they give rise to 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs that we call $D_p^b(G)$-trinions, which are marginal gaugings of three SCFTs with $G$ flavor symmetry. In order to understand the 5d physics of these trinion singularities in M-theory, we reduce these 4d and 5d SCFTs to 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ theories, thus determining the electric and magnetic quivers (or, more generally, quiverines). In M-theory, residual terminal singularities give rise to free sectors of massless hypermultiplets, which often are discretely gauged. These free sectors appear as `ugly' components of the magnetic quiver of the 5d SCFT. The 3-cycles in the crepant resolution also give rise to free hypermultiplets, but their physics is more subtle, and their presence renders the magnetic quiver `bad'. We propose a way to redeem the badness of these quivers using a class $\mathcal{S}$ realization. We also discover new S-dualities between different $D_p^b(G)$-trinions. For instance, a certain $E_8$ gauging of the $E_8$ Minahan-Nemeschansky theory is S-dual to an $E_8$-shaped Lagrangian quiver SCFT.

New aspects of Argyres--Douglas theories and their dimensional reduction

Argyres-Douglas (AD) theories constitute an infinite class of superconformal field theories in four dimensions with a number of interesting properties. We study several new aspects of AD theories engineered in $A$-type class $\mathcal{S}$ with one irregular puncture of Type I or Type II and also a regular puncture. These include conformal manifolds, structures of the Higgs branch, as well as the three dimensional gauge theories coming from the reduction on a circle. The latter admit a description in terms of a linear quiver with unitary and special unitary gauge groups, along with a number of twisted hypermultiplets. The origin of these twisted hypermultiplets is explained from the four dimensional perspective. We also propose the three dimensional mirror theories for such linear quivers. These provide explicit descriptions of the magnetic quivers of all AD theories in question in terms of quiver diagrams with unitary gauge groups, together with a collection of free hypermultiplets. A number of quiver gauge theories presented in this paper are new and have not been studied elsewhere in the literature.

More on $\mathcal{N} =2$ S-folds

We carry out a systematic study of 4d $\mathcal{N} = 2$ preserving S-folds of F-theory 7-branes and the worldvolume theories on D3-branes probing them. They consist of two infinite series of theories, which we denote following the original papers by $\mathcal{S}^{(r)}_{G,\ell}$ for $\ell = 2,3,4$ and $\mathcal{T}^{(r)}_{G,\ell}$ for $\ell = 2,3,4,5,6$. Their distinction lies in the discrete torsion carried by the S-fold and in the difference in the asymptotic holonomy of the gauge bundle on the 7-brane. We study various properties of these theories, using diverse field theoretical and string theoretical methods.

S-fold magnetic quivers

Magnetic quivers and Hasse diagrams for Higgs branches of rank $r$ 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs arising from $\mathbb{Z}_{\ell}$ $\mathcal{S}$-fold constructions are discussed. The magnetic quivers are derived using three different methods: 1) Using clues like dimension, global symmetry, and the folding parameter $\ell$ to guess the magnetic quiver. 2) From 6d $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ SCFTs as UV completions of 5d marginal theories, and specific FI deformations on their magnetic quiver, which is further folded by $\mathbb{Z}_{\ell}$. 3) From T-duality of Type IIA brane systems of 6d $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ SCFTs and explicit mass deformation of the resulting brane web followed by $\mathbb{Z}_{\ell}$ folding. A choice of the ungauging scheme, either on a long node or on a short node, yields two different moduli spaces related by an orbifold action, thus suggesting a larger set of SCFTs in four dimensions than previously expected.

New N=2 superconformal field theories from S-folds

We study the four-dimensional N=2 superconformal field theories that describe D3-branes probing the recently constructed N=2 S-folds in F-theory. We introduce a novel, infinite class of superconformal field theories related to S-fold theories via partial Higgsing. We determine several properties of both the S-fold models and this new class of theories, including their central charges, Coulomb branch spectrum, and moduli spaces of vacua, by bringing to bear an array of field-theoretical techniques, to wit, torus-compactifications of six-dimensional N=(1,0) theories, class S technology, and the SCFT/VOA correspondence.

4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ S-folds

We propose a generalization of S-folds to 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories. This construction is motivated by the classification of rank one 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ super-conformal field theories (SCFTs), which we reproduce from D3-branes probing a configuration of $\mathcal{N}=2$ S-folds combined with 7-branes. The main advantage of this point of view is that realizes both Coulomb and Higgs branch flows and allows for a straight forward generalization to higher rank theories.

3d mirrors of the circle reduction of twisted $A_{2N}$ theories of class $\mathsf{S}$

Mirror symmetry has proven to be a powerful tool to study several properties of higher dimensional superconformal field theories upon compactification to three dimensions. We propose a quiver description for the mirror theories of the circle reduction of twisted $A_{2N}$ theories of class $\mathsf{S}$ in four dimensions. Although these quivers bear a resemblance to the star-shaped quivers previously studied in the literature, they contain unitary, symplectic and special orthogonal gauge groups, along with hypermultiplets in the fundamental representation. The vacuum moduli spaces of these quiver theories are studied in detail. The Coulomb branch Hilbert series of the mirror theory can be matched with that of the Higgs branch of the corresponding four dimensional theory, providing a non-trivial check of our proposal. Moreover various deformations by mass and Fayet-Iliopoulos terms of such quiver theories are investigated. The fact that several of them flow to expected theories also gives another strong support for the proposal. Utilising the mirror quiver description, we discover a new supersymmetry enhancement renormalisation group flow.

The Geometry of SUSY Enhancement

We provide a precise geometric picture that demystifies the phenomenon of supersymmetry enhancement along certain RG flows of four-dimensional field theories, recently discovered by Maruyoshi and Song. It applies to theories of arbitrary rank and it is based on a hyperkähler-structure restoration on the moduli space of solutions of (twisted) Hitchin systems, which underly the class-S construction we use as an engineering tool. Along the way, we formulate a necessary algebraic condition for supersymmetry enhancement, and, when enhancement occurs, we are able to derive the Seiberg-Witten geometry and all conformal dimensions of Coulomb-branch operators for the infrared theory, without using a-maximization.

Dualities for adjoint SQCD in three dimensions and emergent symmetries

In this paper we study dualities for $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauge theories in three dimensions with matter in the fundamental and adjoint representation. The duality we propose, analogous to mirror symmetry, is obtained starting from $\mathcal{N}=4$ mirror theories and turning on a certain superpotential deformation involving monopole operators. We study the role of emergent symmetries in the dual theory, focusing on the case of models with gauge symmetry $U(2)$ or $SU(2)$. We find that $SU(2)$ adjoint SQCD with one flavor and zero superpotential is dual to SQED with two flavors and three singlets. As a byproduct, we recover several dualities for theories with $\mathcal{N}=2$ and $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetry, including the duality appetizer of Jafferis and Yin.

SUSY enhancement from T-branes

We use the F-theoretic engineering of four-dimensional rank-one superconformal field theories to provide a geometric understanding of the phenomenon of supersymmetry enhancement along the RG flow, recently observed by Maruyoshi and Song. In this context, the superpotential deformations responsible for such flows are interpreted as T-brane backgrounds and encoded in the geometry of elliptically-fibered fourfolds. We formulate a simple algebraic criterion to select all supersymmetry-enhancing flows and, without any maximization process, derive the main features of the corresponding N=2 theories in the infrared.

Infrared enhancement of supersymmetry in four dimensions

We study a recently-found class of RG flows in four dimensions exhibiting enhancement of supersymmetry in the infrared, which provides a lagrangian description of several strongly-coupled N=2 SCFTs. The procedure involves starting from a N=2 SCFT, coupling a chiral multiplet in the adjoint representation of the global symmetry to the moment map of the SCFT and turning on a nilpotent expectation value for this chiral. In this note we show that, combining considerations based on 't Hooft anomaly matching and basic results about the N=2 superconformal algebra, it is possible to understand in detail the mechanism underlying this phenomenon and formulate a simple criterion for supersymmetry enhancement which allows us to bypass the analysis with a-maximization. As a byproduct, we propose an algorithm to identify a lagrangian UV completion of a given N=2 SCFT under an RG flow of this type, provided there is one.

RG flows with supersymmetry enhancement and geometric engineering

In this paper we study a class of $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs with ADE global symmetry defined via Type IIB compactification on a class of hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{C}^3\times\mathbb{C}^*$. These can also be constructed by compactifying the 6d (2,0) theory of type ADE on a sphere with an irregular and a full punctures. When we couple to the ADE moment map a chiral multiplet in the adjoint representation and turn on a (principal) nilpotent vev for it, all the theories in this family display enhancement of supersymmetry in the infrared. We observe that all known examples of lagrangian theories which flow, upon the same type of deformation, to strongly coupled $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories fit naturally in our framework, thus providing a new perspective on this topic. We propose an infrared equivalence between this RG flow and a manifestly $\mathcal{N}=2$ preserving one and, as a byproduct, we extract a precise prescription to relate the SW curves describing the UV and IR fixed points for all theories with A or D global symmetry. We also find, for a certain subclass, a simple relation between UV and IR theories at the level of chiral algebras.

Mirror theories of 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SQCD

Using a recently proposed duality for $U(N)$ supersymmetric QCD (SQCD) in three dimensions with monopole superpotential, in this paper we derive the mirror dual description of $\mathcal{N}=2$ SQCD with unitary gauge group, generalizing the known mirror dual description of abelian gauge theories. We match the chiral ring of the dual theories and their partition functions on the squashed sphere. We also conjecture a generalization for SQCD with orthogonal and symplectic gauge groups.

T-branes, monopoles and S-duality

M2 branes probing T-brane backgrounds in M-theory with ADE surface singularities perceive deformations on their worldvolume superpotentials by monopole operators. The dynamics and moduli spaces of the resulting theories can be studied using a dual description involving conventional superpotential terms and (the dimensional reduction of) class S trinion theories. By using the S-dual description of N=2 SU(N) SQCD with 2N flavors in four dimensions, we are able to study T-branes corresponding to all minimal nilpotent orbits for the whole ADE series. Our proposed dualities are supported by the match in squashed sphere partition functions.

Lagrangians for generalized Argyres-Douglas theories

We continue the study of Lagrangian descriptions of $\mathcal{N}=2$ Argyres-Douglas theories. We use our recent interpretation in terms of sequential confinement to guess the Lagrangians of all the Argyres-Douglas models with Abelian three dimensional mirror. We find classes of four dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ quivers that flow in the infrared to generalized Argyres-Douglas theories, such as the $(A_k,A_{kN+N-1})$ models. We study in detail how the $\mathcal{N}=1$ chiral rings map to the Coulomb and Higgs Branches of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ CFT's. The three dimensional mirror RG flows are shown to land on the $\mathcal{N}=4$ complete graph quivers. We also compactify to three dimensions the gauge theory dual to $(A_1,D_4)$, and find the expected Abelianization duality with $\mathcal{N}=4$ SQED with $3$ flavors.

Abelianization and Sequential Confinement in $2+1$ dimensions

We consider the lagrangian description of Argyres-Douglas theories of type $A_{2N-1}$, which is a $SU(N)$ gauge theory with an adjoint and one fundamental flavor. An appropriate reformulation allows us to map the moduli space of vacua across the duality, and to dimensionally reduce. Going down to three dimensions, we find that the adjoint SQCD "abelianizes": in the infrared it is equivalent to a $\mathcal{N}=4$ linear quiver theory. Moreover, we study the mirror dual: using a monopole duality to "sequentially confine" quivers tails with balanced nodes, we show that the mirror RG flow lands on $\mathcal{N}=4$ SQED with $N$ flavors. These results provide a physical derivation of previous proposals for the three dimensional mirror of AD theories.

Supersymmetric gauge theories with decoupled operators and chiral ring stability

We propose a general way to complete supersymmetric theories with operators below the unitarity bound, adding gauge-singlet fields which enforce the decoupling of such operators. This makes it possible to perform all usual computations, and to compactify on a circle. We concentrate on a duality between an $\mathcal{N}=1$ $SU(2)$ gauge theory and the $\mathcal{N}=2$ $A_3$ Argyres-Douglas [1,2], mapping the moduli space and chiral ring of the completed $\mathcal{N}=1$ theory to those of the $A_3$ model. We reduce the completed gauge theory to $3d$, finding a $3d$ duality with $\mathcal{N}=4$ SQED with two flavors. The naive dimensional reduction is instead $\mathcal{N}=2$ SQED. Crucial is a concept of chiral ring stability, which modifies the superpotential and allows for a $3d$ emergent global symmetry.

$\mathcal{N} = 1$ superconformal theories with $D_N$ blocks

We study the chiral ring of four-dimensional superconformal field theories obtained by wrapping M5-branes on a complex curve inside a Calabi-Yau three-fold. We propose a field theoretic construction of all the theories found by Bah, Beem, Bobev and Wecht by introducing new building blocks, and prove several $\mathcal{N} = 1$ dualities featuring the latter. We match the central charges with those computed from the M5-brane anomaly polynomial, perform the counting of relevant operators and analyze unitarity bound violations. As a byproduct, we compute the exact dimension of "heavy operators" obtained by wrapping an M2-brane on the complex curve.
