Lepton-pair scattering with an off-shell and an on-shell photon at two loops in massless QED

We compute the two-loop QED helicity amplitudes for the scattering of a lepton pair with an off-shell and an on-shell photon, $0\to\ell\bar\ellγγ^*$, using the approximation of massless leptons. We express all master integrals relevant for the scattering of four massless particles with a single external off-shell leg up to two loops in a basis of algebraically independent multiple polylogarithms, which guarantees an efficient numerical evaluation and compact analytic representations of the amplitudes. Analytic forms of the amplitudes are reconstructed from numerical evaluations over finite fields. Our results complete the amplitude-level ingredients contributing to the N$^3$LO predictions of electron-muon scattering $eμ\to eμ$, which are required to meet the precision goal of the future MUonE experiment.

Two-loop five-particle scattering amplitudes

I discuss the recent advances in the computation of two-loop scattering amplitudes for five-particle processes. The latter are fundamental ingredients to obtain predictions at the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in QCD for many interesting LHC processes. I discuss the state-of-the-art technology for computing scattering amplitudes analytically, and present new results relevant for the LHC phenomenology.

Isolated photon production in association with a jet pair through next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD

In this work, we provide a comprehensive set of differential cross-section distributions for photon + di-jet production in proton-proton collisions with next-to-next-to-leading order precision in massless QCD. The event selection corresponds to recent measurements by the ATLAS collaboration. We observe an improved description of data in comparison to lower-order calculations in the case of observables that are expected to be well described by perturbation theory. The results also show better agreement with data than parton-shower-matched and multi-jet-merged predictions generated for the ATLAS analysis using the \textsc{Sherpa} Monte Carlo. A particular highlight of our study is the use of exact five-point two-loop virtual amplitudes. This is the first calculation of a complete two-to-three hadron-collider process at next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD that does not rely on the leading-colour approximation at two loops. We demonstrate, nevertheless, that the sub-leading-colour effects present in the infrared- and ultraviolet-finite double-virtual contributions are negligible in view of the remaining scale uncertainties.

Anomalous Ward identities for on-shell amplitudes at the conformal fixed point

Conformal symmetry underlies many massless quantum field theories, but little is known about the consequences of this powerful symmetry for on-shell scattering amplitudes. Working in a dimensionally-regularised $ϕ^3$ model at the conformal fixed point, we show that the on-shell renormalised amplitudes satisfy anomalous conformal Ward identities. Each external on-shell state contributes two terms to the anomaly. The first term is proportional to the elementary field anomalous dimension, and thus involves only lower-loop information. We show that the second term can be given as the convolution of a universal collinear function and lower-order amplitudes. The computation of the conformal anomaly is therefore simpler than that of the amplitude at the same perturbative order, which gives our anomalous conformal Ward identities a strong predictive power in perturbation theory. Finally, we show that our result is also of practical importance for dimensionally-regularised amplitudes away from the conformal fixed point.

Flavour anti-$k_\text{T}$ algorithm applied to $Wb\bar{b}$ production at the LHC

We apply the recently proposed flavoured anti-$k_{\text{T}}$ jet algorithm to $Wb\bar{b}$ production at the Large Hadron Collider at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV. We present results for the total cross section and differential distributions at the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in QCD. We discuss the effects of the remaining parametric freedom in the flavoured anti-$k_{\text{T}}$ prescription, and compare it against the standard flavour-$k_{\text{T}}$ algorithm. We compare the total cross section results against the CMS data, finding good agreement. The NNLO QCD corrections are significant, and their inclusion substantially improves the agreement with the data.

NNLO QCD corrections to $Wb\bar{b}$ production at the LHC

We compute theoretical predictions for the production of a W-boson in association with a bottom-quark pair at hadron colliders at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in QCD, including the leptonic decay of the W-boson, while treating the bottom quark as massless. This calculation constitutes the very first $2 \to 3$ process with a massive external particle to be studied at such a perturbative order. We derive an analytic expression for the required two-loop five-particle amplitudes in the leading colour approximation employing finite-field methods. Numerical results for the cross section and differential distributions are presented for the Large Hadron Collider at $\sqrt{s} = 8$ TeV. We observe an improvement of the perturbative convergence for the inclusive case and for the prediction with a jet veto upon the inclusion of the NNLO QCD corrections.

Pentagon Functions for One-Mass Planar Scattering Amplitudes

We present analytic results for all planar two-loop Feynman integrals contributing to five-particle scattering amplitudes with one external massive leg. We express the integrals in terms of a basis of algebraically-independent transcendental functions, which we call one-mass pentagon functions. We construct them by using the properties of iterated integrals with logarithmic kernels. The pentagon functions are manifestly free of unphysical branch cuts, do not require analytic continuation, and can be readily evaluated over the whole physical phase space of the massive particle production channel. We develop an efficient algorithm for their numerical evaluation and present a public implementation suitable for direct phenomenological applications.

Two-loop leading colour helicity amplitudes for $W^\pmγ+j$ production at the LHC

We present the two-loop leading colour QCD helicity amplitudes for the process $pp\to W(\to lν)γ+j$. We implement a complete reduction of the amplitudes, including the leptonic decay of the $W$-boson, using finite field arithmetic, and extract the analytic finite remainders using a recently identified basis of special functions. Simplified analytic expressions are obtained after considering permutations of a rational kinematic parametrisation and multivariate partial fractioning. We demonstrate efficient numerical evaluation of the two-loop colour and helicity summed finite remainders for physical kinematics, and hence the suitability for phenomenological applications.

Two-loop QCD corrections to $Wb\bar{b}$ production at hadron colliders

We present an analytic computation of the two-loop QCD corrections to $u\bar{d}\to W^+b\bar{b}$ for an on-shell $W$-boson using the leading colour and massless bottom quark approximations. We perform an integration-by-parts reduction of the unpolarised squared matrix element using finite field reconstruction techniques and identify an independent basis of special functions that allows an analytic subtraction of the infrared and ultraviolet poles. This basis is valid for all planar topologies for five-particle scattering with an off-shell leg.

Two-loop leading-colour QCD helicity amplitudes for Higgs boson production in association with a bottom-quark pair at the LHC

We compute the two-loop QCD helicity amplitudes for the production of a Higgs boson in association with a bottom-quark pair at a hadron collider. We take the approximations of leading colour and work in the five flavour scheme, where the bottom quarks are massless while the Yukawa coupling is non-zero. We extract analytic expressions from multiple numerical evaluations over finite fields and present the results in terms of an independent set of special functions that can be reliably evaluated over the full phase space.

Virtual QCD corrections to gluon-initiated diphoton plus jet production at hadron colliders

We present an analytic computation of the gluon-initiated contribution to diphoton plus jet production at hadron colliders up to two loops in QCD. We reconstruct the analytic form of the finite remainders from numerical evaluations over finite fields including all colour contributions. Compact expressions are found using the pentagon function basis. We provide a fast and stable implementation for the colour- and helicity-summed interference between the one-loop and two-loop finite remainders in C++ as part of the NJet library.

Multi-Regge Limit of the Two-Loop Five-Point Amplitudes in $\mathcal{N} = 4$ Super Yang-Mills and $\mathcal{N} = 8$ Supergravity

In previous work, the two-loop five-point amplitudes in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory and $\mathcal{N}=8$ supergravity were computed at symbol level. In this paper, we compute the full functional form. The amplitudes are assembled and simplified using the analytic expressions of the two-loop pentagon integrals in the physical scattering region. We provide the explicit functional expressions, and a numerical reference point in the scattering region. We then calculate the multi-Regge limit of both amplitudes. The result is written in terms of an explicit transcendental function basis. For certain non-planar colour structures of the $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills amplitude, we perform an independent calculation based on the BFKL effective theory. We find perfect agreement. We comment on the analytic properties of the amplitudes.

Conformal Invariance of the One-Loop All-Plus Helicity Scattering Amplitudes

The massless QCD Lagrangian is conformally invariant and, as a consequence, so are the tree-level scattering amplitudes. However, the implications of this powerful symmetry at loop level are only beginning to be explored systematically. Even for finite loop amplitudes, the way conformal symmetry manifests itself may be subtle, e.g. in the form of anomalous conformal Ward identities. As they are finite and rational, the one-loop all-plus and single-minus amplitudes are a natural first step towards understanding the conformal properties of Yang-Mills theory at loop level. Remarkably, we find that the one-loop all-plus amplitudes are conformally invariant, whereas the single-minus are not. Moreover, we present a formula for the one-loop all-plus amplitudes where the symmetry is manifest term by term. Surprisingly, each term transforms covariantly under directional dual conformal variations. We prove the formula directly using recursive techniques, and check that it has the correct physical factorisations.

Conformal Symmetry and Feynman Integrals

Singularities hidden in the collinear region around an external massless leg may lead to conformal symmetry breaking in otherwise conformally invariant finite loop momentum integrals. For an $\ell$-loop integral, this mechanism leads to a set of linear $2$nd-order differential equations with a non-homogeneous part. The latter, due to the contact nature of the anomaly in momentum space, is determined by $(\ell-1)$-loop information. Solving such differential equations in general is an open problem. In the case of 5-particle amplitudes up to two loops, the function space is known, and we can thus follow a bootstrap approach to write down the solution. As a first application of this method, we bootstrap the 6D penta-box integral.

High Energy Resummation of Jet Observables

In this paper we investigate the extension of high energy resummation at LLx accuracy to jet observables. In particular, we present the high energy resummed expression of the transverse momentum distribution of the outgoing parton in the general partonic process $g(q) + g(q) \to g(q) + X$. In order to reach this result, several new ideas are introduced and exploited. First we prove that LLx resummation is achieved by dressing with hard radiation an off-shell gluon initiated LO process even if its on-shell limit is vanishing or trivial. Then we present a gauge-invariant framework where these calculations can be performed by using the modern helicity techniques. Finally, we show a possible way to restore gluon indistinguishability in the final state, which is otherwise lost in the resummation procedure, at all orders in $α_s$ at LLx. All partonic channels are then resummed and cross-checked against fixed-order calculations up to $\mathcal{O}(α_s^3)$
