Can $f(R)$ gravity isotropize a pre-bounce contracting universe?

We address the important issue of isotropisation of a pre-bounce contracting phase in $f(R)$ gravity, which would be relevant to construct any viable nonsingular bouncing scenario in $f(R)$ gravity. The main motivation behind this work is to investigate whether the $f(R)$ gravity, by itself, can isotropise a contracting universe starting initially with small anisotropy without incorporating a super-stiff or non-ideal fluid, that is impossible in general relativity. Considering Bianchi I cosmology and employing a dynamical system analysis, we see that this is not possible for $R^n$ ($n>1$) and $R+αR^2$ ($α>0$) theory, but possible for $\frac{1}αe^{αR}$ ($α>0$) theory. On the other hand, if one does not specify an $f(R)$ theory a priori but demands a cosmology smoothly connecting an ekpyrotic contraction phase to a nonsingular bounce, the ekpyrotic phase \emph{may} not fulfil the condition for isotropisation and physically viability simultaneously.

Impact of curvature based geometric constraints on $F(R)$ theory

Theories of gravity are fundamentally a relation between matter and the geometric structure of the underlying spacetime. So once we put some additional restrictions on the spacetime geometry, the theory of gravity is bound to get the impact, irrespective of whether it is general relativity or the modified theories of gravity. In the present article, we consider two curvature-based constraints, namely the almost pseudo-Ricci symmetric and weakly Ricci symmetric condition. As a novel result, such spacetimes with non-null associated vectors are entirely classified, and then applying the obtained results, we investigate these spacetimes as solutions of the $F(R)$-gravity theory. The modified Friedmann equations are derived and analysed in a model-independent way first. Finally, two $F(R)$ gravity models are examined for recent observational constrained values of the deceleration, jerk, and Hubble parameters. We further discuss the behavior of energy conditions.

Muon ($g-2$) and W-boson mass Anomaly in a Model Based on $Z_4$ Symmetry with Vector like Fermion

The latest results of CDF-II collaboration show a discrepancy of $7σ$ with standard model expectations. There is, also, a $4.2σ$ discrepancy in the measurement of muon magnetic moment reported by Fermilab. We study the connection between neutrino masses, dark matter, muon ($g-2$) and W-boson mass anomaly within a single coherent framework based on $Z_{4}$ extension of the scotogenic model with vector like lepton (VLL). Neutrino masses are generated at one loop level. The inert doublet, also, provide a solution to W-boson mass anomaly through correction in oblique parameters $S$, $T$ and $U$. The coupling of VLL triplet $ψ_T$ to inert doublet $η$ provides positive contribution to muon anomalous magnetic moment. In the model, the VLL triplet provides a lepton portal to dark matter ($η_R^0$). The model predicts a lower bound $m_{ee}>0.025$ eV at 3$σ$, which is well within the sensitivity reach of the $0νββ$ decay experiments. The model explains muon anomalous magnetic moment $Δa_μ$ for $1.3<y_ψ<2.8$ and mass of DM candidate in the range $152\text{ GeV}<M_{η_{R}^{0}}<195\text{ GeV}$. The explanation of W-boson mass anomaly, further, constrain the mass of DM candidate, $M_{η_{R}^{0}}$, in the range $154\text{ GeV}<M_{η_{R}^{0}}<174\text{ GeV}$.

On the Opportunities and Risks of Foundation Models

AI is undergoing a paradigm shift with the rise of models (e.g., BERT, DALL-E, GPT-3) that are trained on broad data at scale and are adaptable to a wide range of downstream tasks. We call these models foundation models to underscore their critically central yet incomplete character. This report provides a thorough account of the opportunities and risks of foundation models, ranging from their capabilities (e.g., language, vision, robotics, reasoning, human interaction) and technical principles(e.g., model architectures, training procedures, data, systems, security, evaluation, theory) to their applications (e.g., law, healthcare, education) and societal impact (e.g., inequity, misuse, economic and environmental impact, legal and ethical considerations). Though foundation models are based on standard deep learning and transfer learning, their scale results in new emergent capabilities, and their effectiveness across so many tasks incentivizes homogenization. Homogenization provides powerful leverage but demands caution, as the defects of the foundation model are inherited by all the adapted models downstream. Despite the impending widespread deployment of foundation models, we currently lack a clear understanding of how they work, when they fail, and what they are even capable of due to their emergent properties. To tackle these questions, we believe much of the critical research on foundation models will require deep interdisciplinary collaboration commensurate with their fundamentally sociotechnical nature.

Muon ($g-2$) in $U(1)_{L_μ-L_τ}$ Scotogenic Model Extended with Vector like Fermion

The latest results of anomalous muon magnetic moment at Fermilab show a discrepancy of 4.2 $σ$ between the Standard Model (SM) prediction and experimental value. In this work, we revisit $U(1)_{L_μ-L_τ}$ symmetry with in the paradigm of scotogenic model which explains muon ($g-2$) and neutrino mass generation, simultaneously. The mass of new gauge boson $M_{Z_{μτ}}$ generated after the spontaneous symmetry breaking of $U(1)_{L_μ-L_τ}$ is constrained, solely, in light of the current neutrino oscillation data to explain muon ($g-2$). In particular, we have obtained two regions I and II, around 150 MeV and 500 MeV, respectively, in $M_{Z_{μτ}}-g_{μτ}$ plane which explain the neutrino phenomenology. Region I is found to be consistent with muon neutrino trident (MNT) bound ($g_{μτ}$ $\leq$ $10^{-3}$) to explain muon ($g-2$), however, region II violates it for mass range $M_{Z_{μτ}}>300$ MeV. We, then, extend the minimal gauged scotogenic model by a vector like lepton (VLL) triplet $ψ_T$. The mixing of $ψ_T$ with inert scalar doublet $η$ leads to chirally enhanced positive contribution to muon anomalous magnetic moment independent of $Z_{μτ}$ mass. Furthermore, we have, also, investigated the implication of the model for $0νββ$ decay and $CP$ violation. The non-observation of $0νββ$ decay down to the sensitivity of 0.01 eV shall refute the model. The model, in general,is found to be consistent with both $CP$ conserving and $CP$ violating solutions.

Generalized Chaplygin gas and accelerating universe in $f(Q,T)$ gravity

The generalized Chaplygin gas (GCG), which has an unusual perfect fluid equation of state, is another promising candidate for dark energy. We investigate the GCG scenario coupled with a baryonic matter in a newly suggested $f(Q,T)$ gravity, an arbitrary function of non-metricity $Q$ and the trace of energy-momentum tensor $T$. We consider the functional form of $f(Q, T)$ as a linear combination of $Q$ and an arbitrary function of $T$, denoted by $h(T)$. Furthermore, we obtain two different functional forms of the $f(Q,T)$ model under high pressure and high-density scenarios of GCG. We also test each model with the recent Pantheon supernovae data set of 1048 data points, Hubble data set of 31 points, and baryon acoustic oscillations. The deceleration parameter is constructed using $OHD+SNeIa+BAO$, predicting a transition from decelerated to accelerated phases of the universe expansion. Also, the equation of state parameter acquires a negative behavior depicting acceleration. Finally, we analyze the statefinder diagnostic to discriminate between the GCG and other dark energy models.

Crossing phantom divide in $f(Q)$ gravity

We investigate the possibility of crossing a phantom divide line in the extension of symmetric teleparallel gravity or the $f(Q)$ gravity, where $Q$ is the non-metricity. We study the cosmic evolution of the effective equation of state parameter for dark energy considering exponential, logarithmic, and combined $f(Q)$ theories. Moreover, the exponential model behaves like the $Λ$CDM at high redshifts before deviating to $ω_{eff}<-1$ or $ω_{eff}>-1$, respectively, depending on the value of model parameter. It also approaches a de-sitter phase asymptotically. However, the crossing of the phantom divide line, i.e., $ω= -1$, is realized in the combined $f(Q)$ theory. Furthermore, statefinder diagnostics are studied in order to differentiate between several dark energy models. To ensure the three model's stability, we employ the stability analysis using linear perturbations. We demonstrate how to reassemble $f(Q)$ via a numerical inversion approach based on existing observational constraints on cosmographic parameters and the potential of bridging the phantom divide in the resulting model. It explicitly demonstrates that future crossings of the phantom dividing line are a generic feature of feasible $f(Q)$ gravity models.

Reasoning over Public and Private Data in Retrieval-Based Systems

Users and organizations are generating ever-increasing amounts of private data from a wide range of sources. Incorporating private data is important to personalize open-domain applications such as question-answering, fact-checking, and personal assistants. State-of-the-art systems for these tasks explicitly retrieve relevant information to a user question from a background corpus before producing an answer. While today's retrieval systems assume the corpus is fully accessible, users are often unable or unwilling to expose their private data to entities hosting public data. We first define the PUBLIC-PRIVATE AUTOREGRESSIVE INFORMATION RETRIEVAL (PAIR) privacy framework for the novel retrieval setting over multiple privacy scopes. We then argue that an adequate benchmark is missing to study PAIR since existing textual benchmarks require retrieving from a single data distribution. However, public and private data intuitively reflect different distributions, motivating us to create ConcurrentQA, the first textual QA benchmark to require concurrent retrieval over multiple data-distributions. Finally, we show that existing systems face large privacy vs. performance tradeoffs when applied to our proposed retrieval setting and investigate how to mitigate these tradeoffs.

Energy Conditions in Non-minimally Coupled $f(R,T)$ Gravity

In today's scenario, going beyond Einstein's theory of gravity leads us to some more complete and modified gravity theories. One of them is the $f(R,T)$ gravity in which $ R $ is the Ricci scalar, and $ T $ is the trace of the energy-momentum tensor. Using a well-motivated linear $f(R,T)$ gravity model with a single parameter, we studied the strong energy condition (SEC), the weak energy condition (WEC), the null energy condition (NEC), and the dominant energy condition (DEC) under the simplest non-minimal matter geometry coupling with a perfect fluid distribution. The model parameter is constrained by energy conditions and a single parameter proposed equation of state (EoS), resulting in the compatibility of the $f(R,T)$ models with the accelerated expansion of the universe. It is seen that the EoS parameter illustrate the quintessence phase in a dominated accelerated phase, pinpoint to the cosmological constant yields as a prediction the phantom era. Also, the present values of the cosmological constant and the acceleration of the universe are used to check the viability of our linear $f(R,T)$ model of gravity. It is observed that the positive behavior of DEC and WEC indicates the validation of the model. In contrast, SEC is violating the condition resulting in the accelerated expansion of the universe.

Viscous cosmology in the Weyl-type $f(Q,T)$ gravity

Bulk viscosity is the only viscous influence that can change the background dynamics in a homogeneous and isotropic universe. In the present work, we analyze the bulk viscous cosmological model with the bulk viscosity coefficient of the form $ξ=ξ_0+ξ_1H+ξ_2\left(\frac{\dot{H}}{H}+H\right)$ where, $ξ_0$, $ξ_1$ and $ξ_2$ are bulk viscous parameters, and $H$ is the Hubble parameter. We investigate the impact of the bulk viscous parameter on dynamics of the universe in the recently proposed Weyl type $f(Q, T)$ gravity, where $Q$ is the non-metricity, and $T$ is the trace of the matter energy-momentum tensor. The exact solutions to the corresponding field equations are obtained with the viscous fluid and the linear gravity model of the form $f(Q, T)=αQ+\fracβ{6κ^2}T$, where $α$ and $β$ are model parameters. Further, we constrain the model parameters using the $57$ points Hubble dataset and recently released 1048 points Pantheon sample, which shows our model is good congeniality with observations. We study the possible scenarios and the evolution of the universe through the deceleration parameter, the statefinder diagnostics, the Om diagnostics. It is observed that the universe exhibits a transition from a decelerated to an accelerated phase of the universe under certain constraints of model parameters.

Metadata Shaping: Natural Language Annotations for the Tail

Language models (LMs) have made remarkable progress, but still struggle to generalize beyond the training data to rare linguistic patterns. Since rare entities and facts are prevalent in the queries users submit to popular applications such as search and personal assistant systems, improving the ability of LMs to reliably capture knowledge over rare entities is a pressing challenge studied in significant prior work. Noticing that existing approaches primarily modify the LM architecture or introduce auxiliary objectives to inject useful entity knowledge, we ask to what extent we could match the quality of these architectures using a base LM architecture, and only changing the data? We propose metadata shaping, a method in which readily available metadata, such as entity descriptions and categorical tags, are appended to examples based on information theoretic metrics. Intuitively, if metadata corresponding to popular entities overlap with metadata for rare entities, the LM may be able to better reason about the rare entities using patterns learned from similar popular entities. On standard entity-rich tasks (TACRED, FewRel, OpenEntity), with no changes to the LM whatsoever, metadata shaping exceeds the BERT-baseline by up to 5.3 F1 points, and achieves or competes with state-of-the-art results. We further show the improvements are up to 10x larger on examples containing tail versus popular entities.

Bulk viscous matter and the cosmic acceleration of the universe in $f(Q,T)$ gravity

We have studied bulk viscosity in the modified $f(Q, T)$ gravity theory formalism, where $Q$ represents the non-metricity and $T$ denotes the trace of energy-momentum tensor within a flat Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker metric (FLRW). Here, we have explicitly considered the effective equation of state, which includes a bulk viscosity term, and obtained the exact solutions by assuming a specific form of $f(Q, T)=αQ+βT$, where $α$ and $β$ are constants. Furthermore, we have found constraints on the model parameters with some external datasets, such as the revised Hubble datasets consisting of 57 data points, Baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) datasets, and the newly published Pantheon samples with 1048 points to obtain the best fitting values of the model parameters. The obtained model is found to be in good agreement with observations. In addition, we have analyzed the cosmological behavior of the density parameter, the equation of state (EoS) parameter ($ω$), and the deceleration parameter ($q$). The results are satisfying to the standard scenario of recent findings of cosmology. The universe appears to be evolving from a decelerated to an accelerated phase. The EoS parameter is further in the quintessence phase, indicating that the universe is accelerating. Finally, we can deduce that the accumulation of bulk viscosity as effective dark energy supports the current accelerated expansion of the universe.

Power-law cosmology in Weyl-type $f(Q,T)$ gravity

Gravity is attributed to the spacetime curvature in classical General Relativity (GR). But, other equivalent formulation or representations of GR, such as torsion or non-metricity have altered the perception. We consider the Weyl-type $f(Q, T)$ gravity, where $Q$ represents the non-metricity and $T$ is the trace of energy momentum temsor, in which the vector field $ω_μ$ determines the non-metricity $Q_{μνα}$ of the spacetime. In this work, we employ the well-motivated $f(Q, T)= αQ+ \fracβ{6k^{2}} T$, where $α$ and $β$ are the model parameters. Furthermore, we assume that the universe is dominated by the pressure-free matter, i.e. the case of dust ($p=0$). We obtain the solution of field equations similar to a power-law in Hubble parameter $H(z)$. We investigate the cosmological implications of the model by constraining the model parameter $α$ and $β$ using the recent 57 points Hubble data and 1048 points Pantheon supernovae data. To study various dark energy models, we use statefinder analysis to address the current cosmic acceleration. We also observe the $Om$ diagnostic describing various phases of the universe. Finally, it is seen that the solution which mimics the power-law fits well with the Pantheon data better than the Hubble data.

A complete study of conformally flat pseudo-symmetric spacetimes in the theory of F(R)-gravity

We investigate the geometrical and physical structures of a pseudo-symmetric spacetime $(PS)_4$ with timelike vector under the condition of conformal flatness. We classify it into two possible types: constant Ricci scalar and closed velocity vector. We further study this spacetime as a solution of $F(R)$-gravity theory and show that the pressure and energy density of the effective cosmological perfect fluid separately possess certain typical relations with the geometry and the gravity sector of the theory. Based on this result, some observational and cosmological analyses are done for the $F(R)$-gravity model and the energy conditions are investigated, supporting the accelerated expansion of the universe.

Constraining effective equation of state in $f(Q,T)$ gravity

New high-precision observations are now possible to constrain different gravity theories. To examine the accelerated expansion of the Universe, we used the newly proposed $f(Q,T)$ gravity, where $Q$ is the non-metricity, and $T$ is the trace of the energy-momentum tensor. The investigation is carried out using a parameterized effective equation of state with two parameters, $m$ and $n$. We have also considered the linear form of $f(Q,T)= Q+bT$, where $b$ is constant. By constraining the model with the recently published 1048 Pantheon sample, we were able to find the best fitting values for the parameters $b$, $m$, and $n$. The model appears to be in good agreement with the observations. Finally, we analyzed the behavior of the deceleration parameter and equation of state parameter. The results support the feasibility of $f(Q,T)$ as a promising theory of gravity, illuminating a new direction towards explaining the Universe's dark sector.

Late-time acceleration with a scalar field source: Observational constraints and statefinder diagnostics

This article discusses a dark energy cosmological model in the standard theory of gravity - general relativity with a broad scalar field as a source. Exact solutions of Einstein's field equations are derived by considering a particular form of deceleration parameter $q$, which shows a smooth transition from decelerated to accelerated phase in the evolution of the universe. The external datasets such as Hubble ($H(z)$) datasets, Supernovae (SN) datasets, and Baryonic Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) datasets are used for constraining the model par parameters appearing in the functional form of $q$. The transition redshift is obtained at $% z_{t}=0.67_{-0.36}^{+0.26}$ for the combined data set ($H(z)+SN+BAO$), where the model shows signature-flipping and is consistent with recent observations. Moreover, the present value of the deceleration parameter comes out to be $q_{0}=-0.50_{-0.11}^{+0.12}$ and the jerk parameter $% j_{0}=-0.98_{-0.02}^{+0.06}$ (close to 1) for the combined datasets, which is compatible as per Planck2018 results. The analysis also constrains the omega value i.e., $Ω_{m_{0}}\leq 0.269$ for the smooth evolution of the scalar field EoS parameter. It is seen that energy density is higher for the effective energy density of the matter field than energy density in the presence of a scalar field. The evolution of the physical and geometrical parameters is discussed in some details with the model parameters' numerical constrained values. Moreover, we have performed the state-finder analysis to investigate the nature of dark energy.

Energy conditions for a $(WRS)_4$ spacetime in $F(R)$-gravity

The objective of the present paper is to study 4-dimensional weakly Ricci symmetric spacetimes $(WRS)_4$ with non-zero constant Ricci scalar. We prove that such a $(WRS)_4$ satisfying $F(R)$-gravity field equations represents a perfect fluid with vanishing vorticity. Some energy conditions are studied under the current setting to constrain the functional form of $F(R)$. We examine a couple of popular toy models in $F(R)$-gravity, $F(R)=e^{αR}$ where $α$ is constant and $F(R)=R-β\tanh(R)$, $β$ is a constant. We also find that the equation of state parameter (EoS) in both models supports the universe's accelerating behavior, i.e., $ω=-1$. According to the recently suggested observations of accelerated expansion, both cases define that the null, weak, and dominant energy conditions justify their requirements while the strong energy conditions violate them.

Constraining $f(Q,T)$ gravity from energy conditions

We are living in a golden age for experimental cosmology. New experiments with high accuracy precision are been used to constrain proposals of several theories of gravity, as it has been never done before. However, important roles to constrain new theories of gravity in a theoretical perspective are the energy conditions. Throughout this work, we carefully constrained some free parameters of two different families of $f(Q,T)$ gravity using different energy conditions. This theory of gravity combines the gravitation effects through the non-metricity scalar function $Q$, and manifestations from the quantum era of the Universe in the classical theory (due to the presence of the trace of the energy-momentum tensor $T$). Our investigation unveils the viability of $f(Q,T)$ gravity to describe the accelerated expansion our Universe passes through. Besides, one of our models naturally provides a phantom regime for dark energy and satisfies the dominant energy condition. The results here derived strength the viability of $f(Q,T)$ as a promising complete theory of gravity, lighting a new path towards the description of the dark sector of the Universe.
