Resonances in QCD

We report on the EMMI Rapid Reaction Task Force meeting 'Resonances in QCD', which took place at GSI October 12-14, 2015. A group of 26 people met to discuss the physics of resonances in QCD. The aim of the meeting was defined by the following three key questions: What is needed to understand the physics of resonances in QCD? Where does QCD lead us to expect resonances with exotic quantum numbers? What experimental efforts are required to arrive at a coherent picture? For light mesons and baryons only those with ${\it up}$, ${\it down}$ and ${\it strange}$ quark content were considered. For heavy-light and heavy-heavy meson systems, those with ${\it charm}$ quarks were the focus. This document summarizes the discussions by the participants, which in turn led to the coherent conclusions we present here.

Quark-gluon plasma phenomenology from the lattice

The FASTSUM Collaboration has calculated several quantities relevant for QCD studies at non-zero temperature using the lattice technique. We report here our results for the (i) interquark potential in charmonium; (ii) bottomonium spectral functions; and (iii) electrical conductivity. All results were obtained with 2+1 flavours of dynamical fermions on an anisotropic lattice which allows greater resolution in the temporal direction.

Exploring the Spectrum of QCD using the Lattice

The calculation of the spectrum of QCD is key to an understanding of the strong interactions, and vital if we are to capitalize on the experimental study of the spectrum. In this paper, we describe progress towards understanding the spectrum of resonances of both mesons and baryons from lattice QCD, focusing in particular on the resonances of the $I=1/2$ nucleon states, and of charmonium mesons composed of the heavy charmed quarks.

Heavy quark physics from lattice QCD

I review the current status of lattice calculations of heavy quark quantities. Particular emphasis is placed on leptonic and semileptonic decay matrix elements.

Lattice determinations of the strange quark mass

Lattice calculations of the mass of the strange quark are reviewed. In particular, the reason for the spread in values is explained with emphasis on the effects that recently implemented improvements have had on the lattice determinations.

Progress in leptonic and semileptonic decays in lattice QCD

The status of lattice calculations of heavy quark phenomenology is reviewed. Particular emphasis is placed on the understanding and control of the calculational uncertainties. The ensuing implications for constraining the CKM matrix elements are discussed.
