Skeleton based simulation of turbidite channels system

A new approach to model turbidite channels using training images is presented, it is called skeleton based simulation. This is an object based model that uses some elements of multipoint geostatistics. The main idea is to simplify the representation of the training image by a one-dimensional object called training skeleton. From this new object, information about the direction and length of the channels is extracted and it is used to simulate others skeletons. These new skeletons are used to create a 3D model of channels inside a turbidite lobe.

Centroaffine Duality for Spatial Polygons

In this paper, we discuss centroaffine geometry of polygons in $3$-space. For a polygon $X$ that is locally convex with respect to an origin together with a transversal vector field $U$, we define the centroaffine dual pair $(Y,V)$ similarly to [6]. We prove that vertices of $(X,U)$ correspond to flattening points for $(Y,V)$ and also that constant curvature polygons are dual to planar polygons. As an application, we give a new proof of a known $4$ flattening points theorem for spatial polygons.

Vector Field-based Simulation of Tree-Like Non-Stationary Geostatistical Models

In this work, a new non-stationary multiple point geostatistical algorithm called vector field-based simulation is proposed. The motivation behind this work is the modeling of a certain structures that exhibit directional features with branching, like a tree, as can be frequently found in fan deltas or turbidity channels. From an image construction approach, the main idea of this work is that instead of using the training image as a source of patterns, it may be used to create a new object called a training vector field (TVF). This object assigns a vector to each point in the reservoir within the training image. The vector represents the direction in which the reservoir develops. The TVF is defined as an approximation of the tangent line at each point in the contour curve of the reservoir. This vector field has a great potential to better capture the non-stationary nature of the training image since the vector not only gives information about the point where it was defined but naturally captures the local trend near that point.

Simplified Graph-based Visualization for Scientific Publication

Understanding citations to scientific publications is a task of vital importance in the academic world. This task can be supported by appropriate data structures and visualization mechanisms. One challenge is the amount of existing relationships and the difficulty of determining which of the references of a document are considered the most potentially relevant to it. In this paper, we propose a simplified visualization of the relationships between scientific publications, in the form of a directed acyclic graph. From a given document, it is possible to visualize a path of references in which each step corresponds to the main citation of the previous one. A methodology is proposed in order to build this graph based in the opinion of the authors of scientific articles and an editorial board.

Affine geometry of equal-volume polygons in 3-space

Equal-volume polygons are obtained from adequate discretizations of curves in 3-space, contained or not in surfaces. In this paper we explore the similarities of these polygons with the affine arc-length parameterized smooth curves to develop a theory of discrete affine invariants. Besides obtaining discrete affine invariants, equal-volume polygons can also be used to estimate projective invariants of a planar curve. This theory has many potential applications, among them evaluation of the quality and computation of affine invariants of silhouette curves.
