Electron-hole Hybridization in Bilayer Graphene

Band structure determines the motion of electrons in a solid, giving rise to exotic phenomena when properly engineered. Drawing an analogy between electrons and photons, artificially designed optical lattices indicate the possibility of a similar band modulation effect in graphene systems. Yet due to the fermionic nature of electrons, modulated electronic systems promise far richer categories of behaviors than those found in optical lattices. Here, we uncovered a strong modulation of electronic states in bilayer graphene subject to periodic potentials. We observed for the first time the hybridization of electron and hole sub-bands, resulting in local band gaps at both primary and secondary charge neutrality points. Such hybridization leads to the formation of flat bands, enabling the study of correlated effects in graphene systems. This work may also offer a viable platform to form and continuously tune Majorana zero modes, which is important to the realization of topological quantum computation.

Test of validity of the force-field approximation with AMS-02 and PAMELA monthly fluxes

Galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) entering the heliosphere are disturbed by the magnetic field of the Sun, which varies the shape and intensity of their local interstellar spectrum. The force-field approximation is a popular way of dealing with solar modulation, especially for studies focused on galactic transport of cosmic rays. The validity of this approach to reproduce the modulated GCR fluxes at Earth is tested using monthly proton fluxes measured by PAMELA between July 2006 and January 2014 and monthly proton and helium fluxes measured by AMS-02 between May 2011 and May 2017. We show that the precision of the new AMS-02 data requires a rigidity-dependent modification of the force-field approximation.

Time dependence of the p/He ratio in cosmic rays according to the force-field approximation

We study the predictions for the p/He ratio in galactic cosmic rays according to the force-field approximation. The dependence of the time variation of p/He on the local interstellar spectrum (LIS) shape and on the mass-to-charge ratio, A/Z, is analyzed in detail. We find that, depending on the rigidity range and the sign of the spectral index of the p/He LIS ratio, the p/He time variation can be correlated or anti-correlated with the phase of the solar cycle. We show that the A/Z dependence is the most probable cause for the p/He decrease recently observed by AMS-02 after 2015 between 2 and 3 GV.

A Deep Reinforcement Learning Based Approach for Optimal Active Power Dispatch

The stochastic and dynamic nature of renewable energy sources and power electronic devices are creating unique challenges for modern power systems. One such challenge is that the conventional mathematical systems models-based optimal active power dispatch (OAPD) method is limited in its ability to handle uncertainties caused by renewables and other system contingencies. In this paper, a deep reinforcement learning-based (DRL) method is presented to provide a near-optimal solution to the OAPD problem without system modeling. The DRL agent undergoes offline training, based on which, it is able to obtain the OAPD points under unseen scenarios, e.g., different load patterns. The DRL-based OAPD method is tested on the IEEE 14-bus system, thereby validating its feasibility to solve the OAPD problem. Its utility is further confirmed in that it can be leveraged as a key component for solving future model-free AC-OPF problems.

Observation of Rydberg exciton polaritons and their condensate in a perovskite cavity

The condensation of half-light half-matter exciton polaritons in semiconductor optical cavities is a striking example of macroscopic quantum coherence in a solid state platform. Quantum coherence is possible only when there are strong interactions between the exciton polaritons provided by their excitonic constituents. Rydberg excitons with high principle value exhibit strong dipole-dipole interactions in cold atoms. However, polaritons with the excitonic constituent that is an excited state, namely Rydberg exciton polaritons (REPs), have not yet been experimentally observed. Here, for the first time, we observe the formation of REPs in a single crystal CsPbBr3 perovskite cavity without any external fields. These polaritons exhibit strong nonlinear behavior that leads to a coherent polariton condensate with a prominent blue shift. Furthermore, the REPs in CsPbBr3 are highly anisotropic and have a large extinction ratio, arising from the perovskite's orthorhombic crystal structure. Our observation not only sheds light on the importance of many-body physics in coherent polariton systems involving higher-order excited states, but also paves the way for exploring these coherent interactions for solid state quantum optical information processing.

BEBP: An Poisoning Method Against Machine Learning Based IDSs

In big data era, machine learning is one of fundamental techniques in intrusion detection systems (IDSs). However, practical IDSs generally update their decision module by feeding new data then retraining learning models in a periodical way. Hence, some attacks that comprise the data for training or testing classifiers significantly challenge the detecting capability of machine learning-based IDSs. Poisoning attack, which is one of the most recognized security threats towards machine learning-based IDSs, injects some adversarial samples into the training phase, inducing data drifting of training data and a significant performance decrease of target IDSs over testing data. In this paper, we adopt the Edge Pattern Detection (EPD) algorithm to design a novel poisoning method that attack against several machine learning algorithms used in IDSs. Specifically, we propose a boundary pattern detection algorithm to efficiently generate the points that are near to abnormal data but considered to be normal ones by current classifiers. Then, we introduce a Batch-EPD Boundary Pattern (BEBP) detection algorithm to overcome the limitation of the number of edge pattern points generated by EPD and to obtain more useful adversarial samples. Based on BEBP, we further present a moderate but effective poisoning method called chronic poisoning attack. Extensive experiments on synthetic and three real network data sets demonstrate the performance of the proposed poisoning method against several well-known machine learning algorithms and a practical intrusion detection method named FMIFS-LSSVM-IDS.

Magnetically-defined topological edge plasmons in edgeless electron gas

Topological materials bear gapped excitations in bulk yet protected gapless excitations at boundaries. Magnetoplasmons (MPs), as high-frequency density excitations of two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in a perpendicular magnetic field, embody a prototype of band topology for bosons. The time-reversal-breaking magnetic field opens a topological gap for bulk MPs up to the cyclotron frequency; topologically-protected edge magnetoplasmons (EMPs) bridge the bulk gap and propagate unidirectionally along system's boundaries. However, all the EMPs known to date adhere to physical edges where the electron density terminates abruptly. This restriction has made device application extremely difficult. Here we demonstrate a new class of topological edge plasmons -- domain-boundary magnetoplasmons (DBMPs), within a uniform edgeless 2DEG. Such DBMPs arise at the domain boundaries of an engineered sign-changing magnetic field and are protected by the difference of gap Chern numbers (+/-1) across the magnetic domains. They propagate unidirectionally along the domain boundaries and are immune to domain defects. Moreover, they exhibit wide tunability in the microwave frequency range under an applied magnetic field or gate voltage. Our study opens a new direction to realize high-speed reconfigurable topological devices.

Cyber-Physical Testbed for Power System Wide-Area Measurement-Based Control Using Open-Source Software

The electric power system is a cyber-physical system with power flow in the physical system and information flow in the cyber. Simulation is crucial to understanding the dynamics and control of electric power systems yet the underlying communication system has historically been ignored in these studies. This paper aims at meeting the increasing needs to simulate the operations of a real power system including the physical system, the energy management system, the communication system, and the emerging wide-area measurement-based controls. This paper proposes a cyber-physical testbed design and implementation for verifying and demonstrating wide-area control methods based on streaming telemetry and phasor measurement unit data. The proposed decoupled architecture is composed of a differential algebraic equation based physical system simulator, a software-defined network, a scripting language environment for prototyping an EMS system and a control system, all of which are integrated over industry-standard communication protocols. The proposed testbed is implemented using open-source software packages managed by a Python dispatcher. Finally, demonstrations are presented to show two wide-area measurement-based controls - system separation control and hierarchical voltage control, in the implemented testbed.

Quantitative Control Approach for Wind Turbine Generators to Provide Fast Frequency Response with Guarantee of Rotor Security

Wind generation is expected to reach substantially higher levels of penetration in the near future. With the converter interface, the rotor inertia of doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) based wind turbine generator is effectively decoupled from the system, causing a reduction in inertial response. This can be compensated by enabling the DFIG to provide fast frequency response. This paper proposes a quantitative control approach for DFIG to deliver fast frequency response in the inertial response time scale. A supplementary power surge function is added to the active power reference of DFIG. The exact amount of power surge that is available from DFIG-based wind turbine is quantified based on estimation of maximum extractable energy. Moreover, the operational constraints such as rotor limits and converter over-load limit are considered at the same time. Thus, the proposed approach not only provides adequate inertial response but also ensures the rotor speed is kept within a specified operating range. Rotor safety is guaranteed without the need for an additional rotor speed protection scheme.
