Deep Representation Decomposition for Rate-Invariant Speaker Verification

While promising performance for speaker verification has been achieved by deep speaker embeddings, the advantage would reduce in the case of speaking-style variability. Speaking rate mismatch is often observed in practical speaker verification systems, which may actually degrade the system performance. To reduce intra-class discrepancy caused by speaking rate, we propose a deep representation decomposition approach with adversarial learning to learn speaking rate-invariant speaker embeddings. Specifically, adopting an attention block, we decompose the original embedding into an identity-related component and a rate-related component through multi-task training. Additionally, to reduce the latent relationship between the two decomposed components, we further propose a cosine mapping block to train the parameters adversarially to minimize the cosine similarity between the two decomposed components. As a result, identity-related features become robust to speaking rate and then are used for verification. Experiments are conducted on VoxCeleb1 data and HI-MIA data to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed approach.

The universality in urban commuting across and within cities

Commuting is a key mechanism that governs the dynamics of cities. Despite its importance, very little is known of the properties and mechanisms underlying this crucial urban process. Here, we capitalize on $\sim$ 50 million individuals' smartphone data from 234 Chinese cities to show that urban commuting obeys remarkable regularities. These regularities can be generalized as two laws: (i) the scale-invariance of the average commuting distance across cities, which is a long-awaited validation of Marchetti's constant conjecture, and (ii) a universal inverted U-shape of the commuting distance as a function of the distance from the city centre within cities, indicating that the city centre's attraction is bounded. Motivated by such empirical findings, we develop a simple urban growth model that connects individual-level mobility choices with macroscopic urban spatial structure and faithfully explains both commuting laws. Our results further show that the scale-invariants of human mobility will ultimately lead to the polycentric transition in cities, which could be used to better inform urban development strategies.

Reformulating Speaker Diarization as Community Detection With Emphasis On Topological Structure

Clustering-based speaker diarization has stood firm as one of the major approaches in reality, despite recent development in end-to-end diarization. However, clustering methods have not been explored extensively for speaker diarization. Commonly-used methods such as k-means, spectral clustering, and agglomerative hierarchical clustering only take into account properties such as proximity and relative densities. In this paper we propose to view clustering-based diarization as a community detection problem. By doing so the topological structure is considered. This work has four major contributions. First it is shown that Leiden community detection algorithm significantly outperforms the previous methods on the clustering of speaker-segments. Second, we propose to use uniform manifold approximation to reduce dimension while retaining global and local topological structure. Third, a masked filtering approach is introduced to extract "clean" speaker embeddings. Finally, the community structure is applied to an end-to-end post-processing network to obtain diarization results. The final system presents a relative DER reduction of up to 70 percent. The breakdown contribution of each component is analyzed.

Graph Convolutional Network Based Semi-Supervised Learning on Multi-Speaker Meeting Data

Unsupervised clustering on speakers is becoming increasingly important for its potential uses in semi-supervised learning. In reality, we are often presented with enormous amounts of unlabeled data from multi-party meetings and discussions. An effective unsupervised clustering approach would allow us to significantly increase the amount of training data without additional costs for annotations. Recently, methods based on graph convolutional networks (GCN) have received growing attention for unsupervised clustering, as these methods exploit the connectivity patterns between nodes to improve learning performance. In this work, we present a GCN-based approach for semi-supervised learning. Given a pre-trained embedding extractor, a graph convolutional network is trained on the labeled data and clusters unlabeled data with "pseudo-labels". We present a self-correcting training mechanism that iteratively runs the cluster-train-correct process on pseudo-labels. We show that this proposed approach effectively uses unlabeled data and improves speaker recognition accuracy.

Speaker Embedding-aware Neural Diarization: an Efficient Framework for Overlapping Speech Diarization in Meeting Scenarios

Overlapping speech diarization has been traditionally treated as a multi-label classification problem. In this paper, we reformulate this task as a single-label prediction problem by encoding multiple binary labels into a single label with the power set, which represents the possible combinations of target speakers. This formulation has two benefits. First, the overlaps of target speakers are explicitly modeled. Second, threshold selection is no longer needed. Through this formulation, we propose the speaker embedding-aware neural diarization (SEND) framework, where a speech encoder, a speaker encoder, two similarity scorers, and a post-processing network are jointly optimized to predict the encoded labels according to the similarities between speech features and speaker embeddings. Experimental results show that SEND has a stable learning process and can be trained on highly overlapped data without extra initialization. More importantly, our method achieves the state-of-the-art performance in real meeting scenarios with fewer model parameters and lower computational complexity.

Spatial distribution of HOCN around Sagittarius B2

HOCN and HNCO abundance ratio in molecular gas can tell us the information of their formation mechanism. We performed high-sensitivity mapping observations of HOCN, HNCO, and HNC$^{18}$O lines around Sagittarius B2 (Sgr B2) with IRAM 30m telescope at 3-mm wavelength. HNCO 4$_{04}$-3$_{03}$ and HOCN 4$_{04}$-3$_{03}$ are used to obtain the abundance ratio of HNCO to HOCN. The ratio of HNCO 4$_{04}$-3$_{03}$ to HNC$^{18}$O 4$_{04}$-3$_{03}$ is used to calculate the optical depth of HNCO 4$_{04}$-3$_{03}$. The abundance ratio of HOCN and HNCO is observed to range from 0.4% to 0.7% toward most positions, which agrees well with the gas-grain model. However, the relative abundance of HOCN is observed to be enhanced toward the direction of Sgr B2 (S), with HOCN to HNCO abundance ratio of $\sim$ 0.9%. The reason for that still needs further investigation.Based on the intensity ratio of HNCO and HNC$^{18}$O lines, we updated the isotopic ratio of $^{16}$O/$^{18}$O to be 296 $\pm$ 54 in Sgr B2.

M2MeT: The ICASSP 2022 Multi-Channel Multi-Party Meeting Transcription Challenge

Recent development of speech processing, such as speech recognition, speaker diarization, etc., has inspired numerous applications of speech technologies. The meeting scenario is one of the most valuable and, at the same time, most challenging scenarios for the deployment of speech technologies. Specifically, two typical tasks, speaker diarization and multi-speaker automatic speech recognition have attracted much attention recently. However, the lack of large public meeting data has been a major obstacle for the advancement of the field. Therefore, we make available the AliMeeting corpus, which consists of 120 hours of recorded Mandarin meeting data, including far-field data collected by 8-channel microphone array as well as near-field data collected by headset microphone. Each meeting session is composed of 2-4 speakers with different speaker overlap ratio, recorded in rooms with different size. Along with the dataset, we launch the ICASSP 2022 Multi-channel Multi-party Meeting Transcription Challenge (M2MeT) with two tracks, namely speaker diarization and multi-speaker ASR, aiming to provide a common testbed for meeting rich transcription and promote reproducible research in this field. In this paper we provide a detailed introduction of the AliMeeting dateset, challenge rules, evaluation methods and baseline systems.

Speaker Embedding-aware Neural Diarization for Flexible Number of Speakers with Textual Information

Overlapping speech diarization is always treated as a multi-label classification problem. In this paper, we reformulate this task as a single-label prediction problem by encoding the multi-speaker labels with power set. Specifically, we propose the speaker embedding-aware neural diarization (SEND) method, which predicts the power set encoded labels according to the similarities between speech features and given speaker embeddings. Our method is further extended and integrated with downstream tasks by utilizing the textual information, which has not been well studied in previous literature. The experimental results show that our method achieves lower diarization error rate than the target-speaker voice activity detection. When textual information is involved, the diarization errors can be further reduced. For the real meeting scenario, our method can achieve 34.11% relative improvement compared with the Bayesian hidden Markov model based clustering algorithm.

BeamTransformer: Microphone Array-based Overlapping Speech Detection

We propose BeamTransformer, an efficient architecture to leverage beamformer's edge in spatial filtering and transformer's capability in context sequence modeling. BeamTransformer seeks to optimize modeling of sequential relationship among signals from different spatial direction. Overlapping speech detection is one of the tasks where such optimization is favorable. In this paper we effectively apply BeamTransformer to detect overlapping segments. Comparing to single-channel approach, BeamTransformer exceeds in learning to identify the relationship among different beam sequences and hence able to make predictions not only from the acoustic signals but also the localization of the source. The results indicate that a successful incorporation of microphone array signals can lead to remarkable gains. Moreover, BeamTransformer takes one step further, as speech from overlapped speakers have been internally separated into different beams.

Propionamide (C2H5CONH2): The largest peptide-like molecule in space

Peptide bonds, as the molecular bridges that connect amino acids, are crucial to the formation of proteins. Searches and studies of molecules with embedded peptide-like bonds are thus important for the understanding of protein formation in space. Here we report the first tentative detection of propionamide (C2H5CONH2), the largest peptide-like molecule detected in space toward Sagittarius B2(N1) at a position called N1E that is slightly offset from the continuum peak. A new laboratory measurements of the propionamide spectrum were carried out in the 9-461 GHz, which provide good opportunity to check directly for the transition frequencies of detected interstellar lines of propionamide. Our observing result indicates that propionamide emission comes from the warm, compact cores in Sagittarius B2, in which massive protostellars are forming. The column density of propionamide toward Sgr B2(N1E) was derived to be 1.5\times 10^{16} cm^-2, which is three fifths of that of acetamide, and one nineteenth of that of formamide. This detection suggests that large peptide-like molecules can form and survive during star-forming process and may form more complex molecules in the interstellar medium. The detection of propionamide bodes well for the presence of polypeptides, as well as other complex prebiotic molecules in the interstellar medium.

Measuring daily-life fear perception change: a computational study in the context of COVID-19

COVID-19, as a global health crisis, has triggered the fear emotion with unprecedented intensity. Besides the fear of getting infected, the outbreak of COVID-19 also created significant disruptions in people's daily life and thus evoked intensive psychological responses indirect to COVID-19 infections. Here, we construct an expressed fear database using 16 million social media posts generated by 536 thousand users between January 1st, 2019 and August 31st, 2020 in China. We employ deep learning techniques to detect the fear emotion within each post and apply topic models to extract the central fear topics. Based on this database, we find that sleep disorders ("nightmare" and "insomnia") take up the largest share of fear-labeled posts in the pre-pandemic period (January 2019-December 2019), and significantly increase during the COVID-19. We identify health and work-related concerns are the two major sources of fear induced by the COVID-19. We also detect gender differences, with females generating more posts containing the daily-life fear sources during the COVID-19 period. This research adopts a data-driven approach to trace back public emotion, which can be used to complement traditional surveys to achieve real-time emotion monitoring to discern societal concerns and support policy decision-making.

A Real-time Speaker Diarization System Based on Spatial Spectrum

In this paper we describe a speaker diarization system that enables localization and identification of all speakers present in a conversation or meeting. We propose a novel systematic approach to tackle several long-standing challenges in speaker diarization tasks: (1) to segment and separate overlapping speech from two speakers; (2) to estimate the number of speakers when participants may enter or leave the conversation at any time; (3) to provide accurate speaker identification on short text-independent utterances; (4) to track down speakers movement during the conversation; (5) to detect speaker change incidence real-time. First, a differential directional microphone array-based approach is exploited to capture the target speakers' voice in far-field adverse environment. Second, an online speaker-location joint clustering approach is proposed to keep track of speaker location. Third, an instant speaker number detector is developed to trigger the mechanism that separates overlapped speech. The results suggest that our system effectively incorporates spatial information and achieves significant gains.

Estimating air quality co-benefits of energy transition using machine learning

Estimating health benefits of reducing fossil fuel use from improved air quality provides important rationales for carbon emissions abatement. Simulating pollution concentration is a crucial step of the estimation, but traditional approaches often rely on complicated chemical transport models that require extensive expertise and computational resources. In this study, we develop a novel and succinct machine learning framework that is able to provide precise and robust annual average fine particle (PM2.5) concentration estimations directly from a high-resolution fossil energy use data set. The accessibility and applicability of this framework show great potentials of machine learning approaches for integrated assessment studies. Applications of the framework with Chinese data reveal highly heterogeneous health benefits of reducing fossil fuel use in different sectors and regions in China with a mean of \$34/tCO2 and a standard deviation of \$84/tCO2. Reducing rural and residential coal use offers the highest co-benefits with a mean of \$360/tCO2. Our findings prompt careful policy designs to maximize cost-effectiveness in the transition towards a carbon-neutral energy system.
