Pre-equalization Design for ISAC-OTFS Air-Ground Transmission: A Deep Learning Approach

Despite the strong Doppler resilience capability, orthogonal time-frequency space (OTFS) modulation suffers from high channel estimation and equalization complexity at the receiver, hindering its applicability in air-ground transmission. In this paper, we propose a pre-equalization-based integrated sensing and communications-OTFS downlink transmission framework in which the terrestrial access point executes pre-equalization using the predicted channel state information (CSI), so that the unmanned aerial vehicle can perform direct symbol detection without channel equalization. In particular, the mean square error of OTFS symbol demodulation and Cramer-Rao lower bound of sensing parameter estimation are considered, with their weighted sum utilized as the metric for optimizing the pre-equalization matrix. To address the time-varying CSI, we develop a deep learning based framework composed of channel prediction and pre-equalization. In particular, a parameter-level channel prediction module is utilized to decouple OTFS channel parameters, and a low-dimensional prediction network is leveraged to correct outdated CSI, which is then used to initialize the input of the pre-equalization module. Finally, a dual-branch residual-structured deep neural network is cascaded to execute pre-equalization. Simulation results show that the proposed channel prediction-based pre-equalization framework significantly reduces receiver complexity and pilot overhead while achieving symbol detection performance close to minimum mean square error equalization with perfect CSI under high mobility, as well as substantially improving sensing accuracy.

Learning Truthful Mechanisms without Discretization

This paper introduces TEDI (Truthful, Expressive, and Dimension-Insensitive approach), a discretization-free algorithm to learn truthful and utility-maximizing mechanisms. Existing learning-based approaches often rely on discretization of outcome spaces to ensure truthfulness, which leads to inefficiency with increasing problem size. To address this limitation, we formalize the concept of pricing rules, defined as functions that map outcomes to prices. Based on this concept, we propose a novel menu mechanism, which can be equivalent to a truthful direct mechanism under specific conditions. The core idea of TEDI lies in its parameterization of pricing rules using Partial GroupMax Network, a new network architecture designed to universally approximate partial convex functions. To learn optimal pricing rules, we develop novel training techniques, including covariance trick and continuous sampling, to derive unbiased gradient estimators compatible with first-order optimization. Theoretical analysis establishes that TEDI guarantees truthfulness, full expressiveness, and dimension-insensitivity. Experimental evaluation in the studied auction setting demonstrates that TEDI achieves strong performance, competitive with or exceeding state-of-the-art methods. This work presents the first approaches to learn truthful mechanisms without outcome discretization, thereby enhancing algorithmic efficiency. The proposed concepts, network architecture, and learning techniques might offer potential value and provide new insights for automated mechanism design and differentiable economics.

Mutual Information-oriented ISAC Beamforming Design for Large Dimensional Antenna Array

Existing integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) beamforming design were mostly designed under perfect instantaneous channel state information (CSI), limiting their use in practical dynamic environments. In this paper, we study the beamforming design for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) ISAC systems based on statistical CSI, with the weighted mutual information (MI) comprising sensing and communication perspectives adopted as the performance metric. In particular, the operator-valued free probability theory is utilized to derive the closed-form expression for the weighted MI under statistical CSI. Subsequently, an efficient projected gradient ascent (PGA) algorithm is proposed to optimize the transmit beamforming matrix with the aim of maximizing the weighted MI.Numerical results validate that the derived closed-form expression matches well with the Monte Carlo simulation results and the proposed optimization algorithm is able to improve the weighted MI significantly. We also illustrate the trade-off between sensing and communication MI.

Analysis and Optimization of Multiple-STAR-RIS Assisted MIMO-NOMA with GSVD Precoding: An Operator-Valued Free Probability Approach

Among the key enabling 6G techniques, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and non-orthogonal multiple-access (NOMA) play an important role in enhancing the spectral efficiency of the wireless communication systems. To further extend the coverage and the capacity, the simultaneously transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) has recently emerged out as a cost-effective technology. To exploit the benefit of STAR-RIS in the MIMO-NOMA systems, in this paper, we investigate the analysis and optimization of the downlink dual-user MIMO-NOMA systems assisted by multiple STAR-RISs under the generalized singular value decomposition (GSVD) precoding scheme, in which the channel is assumed to be Rician faded with the Weichselberger's correlation structure. To analyze the asymptotic information rate of the users, we apply the operator-valued free probability theory to obtain the Cauchy transform of the generalized singular values (GSVs) of the MIMO-NOMA channel matrices, which can be used to obtain the information rate by Riemann integral. Then, considering the special case when the channels between the BS and the STAR-RISs are deterministic, we obtain the closed-form expression for the asymptotic information rates of the users. Furthermore, a projected gradient ascent method (PGAM) is proposed with the derived closed-form expression to design the STAR-RISs thereby maximizing the sum rate based on the statistical channel state information. The numerical results show the accuracy of the asymptotic expression compared to the Monte Carlo simulations and the superiority of the proposed PGAM algorithm.

Automated Deterministic Auction Design with Objective Decomposition

Identifying high-revenue mechanisms that are both dominant strategy incentive compatible (DSIC) and individually rational (IR) is a fundamental challenge in auction design. While theoretical approaches have encountered bottlenecks in multi-item auctions, there has been much empirical progress in automated designing such mechanisms using machine learning. However, existing research primarily focuses on randomized auctions, with less attention given to the more practical deterministic auctions. Therefore, this paper investigates the automated design of deterministic auctions and introduces OD-VVCA, an objective decomposition approach for automated designing Virtual Valuations Combinatorial Auctions (VVCAs). Firstly, we restrict our mechanism to deterministic VVCAs, which are inherently DSIC and IR. Afterward, we utilize a parallelizable dynamic programming algorithm to compute the allocation and revenue outcomes of a VVCA efficiently. We then decompose the revenue objective function into continuous and piecewise constant discontinuous components, optimizing each using distinct methods. Extensive experiments show that OD-VVCA achieves high revenue in multi-item auctions, especially in large-scale settings where it outperforms both randomized and deterministic baselines, indicating its efficacy and scalability.

OTFS-based Robust MMSE Precoding Design in Over-the-air Computation

Over-the-air computation (AirComp), as a data aggregation method that can improve network efficiency by exploiting the superposition characteristics of wireless channels, has received much attention recently. Meanwhile, the orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation can provide a strong Doppler resilience and facilitate reliable transmission for high-mobility communications. Hence, in this work, we investigate an OTFS-based AirComp system in the presence of time-frequency dual-selective channels. In particular, we commence from the development of a novel transmission framework for the considered system, where the pilot signal is sent together with data, and the channel estimation is implemented according to the echo from the access point to the sensor, thereby reducing the overhead of channel state information (CSI) feedback. Hereafter, based on the CSI estimated from the previous frame, a robust precoding matrix aiming at minimizing mean square error in the current frame is designed, which takes into account the estimation error from the receiver noise and the outdated CSI. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed robust precoding scheme by comparing it with the non-robust precoding. The performance gain is more obvious in a high signal-to-noise ratio in case of large channel estimation errors.

On the Mutual Information of Multi-RIS Assisted MIMO: From Operator-Valued Free Probability Aspect

The reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is useful to effectively improve the coverage and data rate of end-to-end communications. In contrast to the well-studied coverage-extension use case, in this paper, multiple RIS panels are introduced, aiming to enhance the data rate of multi-input multi-output (MIMO) channels in presence of insufficient scattering. Specifically, via the operator-valued free probability theory, the asymptotic mutual information of the large-dimensional RIS-assisted MIMO channel is obtained under the Rician fading with Weichselberger's correlation structure, in presence of both the direct and the reflected links. Although the mutual information of Rician MIMO channels scales linearly as the number of antennas and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in decibels, numerical results show that it requires sufficiently large SNR, proportional to the Rician factor, in order to obtain the theoretically guaranteed linear improvement. This paper shows that the proposed multi-RIS deployment is especially effective to improve the mutual information of MIMO channels under the large Rician factor conditions. When the reflected links have similar arriving and departing angles across the RIS panels, a small number of RIS panels are sufficient to harness the spatial degree of freedom of the multi-RIS assisted MIMO channels.
