Strong error analysis and first-order convergence of Milstein-type schemes for McKean-Vlasov SDEs with superlinear coefficients

In the study of McKean-Vlasov stochastic differential equations (MV-SDEs), numerical approximation plays a crucial role in understanding the behavior of interacting particle systems (IPS). Classical Milstein schemes provide strong convergence of order one under globally Lipschitz coefficients. Nevertheless, many MV-SDEs arising from applications possess super-linearly growing drift and diffusion terms, where classical methods may diverge and particle corruption can occur. In the present work, we aim to fill this gap by developing a unified class of Milstein-type discretizations handling both super-linear drift and diffusion coefficients. The proposed framework includes the tamed-, tanh-, and sine-Milstein methods as special cases and establishes order-one strong convergence for the associated interacting particle system under mild regularity assumptions, requiring only once differentiable coefficients. In particular, our results complement Chen et al. (Electron. J. Probab., 2025), where a taming-based Euler scheme was only tested numerically without theoretical guarantees, by providing a rigorous convergence theory within a broader Milstein-type framework. The analysis relies on discrete-time arguments and binomial-type expansions, avoiding the continuous-time Itô approach that is standard in the literature. Numerical experiments are presented to illustrate the convergence behavior and support the theoretical findings.

Long time strong convergence analysis of one-step methods for McKean-Vlasov SDEs with superlinear growth coefficients

This paper presents a strong convergence rate analysis of general discretization approximations for McKean-Vlasov SDEs with super-linear growth coefficients over infinite time horizon. Under some specified non-globally Lipschitz conditions, we derive the propagation of chaos, and the mean-square convergence rate over infinite time horizon for general one-step time discretization schemes for the underlying Mckean-Vlasov SDEs. As an application of the general result it is obtained the mean-square convergence rate over infinite time horizon for two numerical schemes: the projected Euler scheme and the backward Euler scheme for Mckean-Vlasov SDEs in non-globally Lipschitz settings. Numerical experiments are provided to validate the theoretical findings.

Euler-type methods for Levy-driven McKean-Vlasov SDEs with super-linear coefficients: mean-square error analysis

We develop and analyze a general class of Euler-type numerical schemes for Levy-driven McKean-Vlasov stochastic differential equations (SDEs), where the drift, diffusion and jump coefficients grow super-linearly in the state variable. These numerical schemes are derived by incorporating projections or nonlinear transformations into the classical Euler method, with the primary objective of establishing moment bounds for the numerical solutions. This class of schemes includes the tanh-Euler, tamed-Euler and sine-Euler schemes as special cases. In contrast to existing approaches that rely on a coercivity condition (e.g., Assumption B-1 in Kumar et al., arXiv:2010.08585), the proposed schemes remove such a restrictive assumption. We provide a rigorous mean-square convergence analysis and establish that the proposed schemes achieve convergence rates arbitrarily close to 1/2 for the interacting particle systems associated with Levy-driven McKean-Vlasov SDEs. Several numerical examples are presented to illustrate the convergence behavior and validate the theoretical results.

Multilevel Monte Carlo methods for positivity-preserving approximations of the Heston 3/2-model

This article is concerned with the multilevel Monte Carlo (MLMC) methods for approximating expectations of some functions of the solution to the Heston 3/2-model from mathematical finance, which takes values in $(0, \infty)$ and possesses superlinearly growing drift and diffusion coefficients. To discretize the SDE model, a new Milstein-type scheme is proposed to produce independent sample paths. The proposed scheme can be explicitly solved and is positivity-preserving unconditionally, i.e., for any time step-size $h>0$. This positivity-preserving property for large discretization time steps is particularly desirable in the MLMC setting. Furthermore, a mean-square convergence rate of order one is proved in the non-globally Lipschitz regime, which is not trivial, as the diffusion coefficient grows super-linearly. The obtained order-one convergence in turn promises the desired relevant variance of the multilevel estimator and justifies the optimal complexity $\mathcal{O}(ε^{-2})$ for the MLMC approach, where $ε> 0$ is the required target accuracy. Numerical experiments are finally reported to confirm the theoretical findings.

First order strong approximation of Ait-Sahalia-type interest rate model with Poisson jumps

For Ait-Sahalia-type interest rate model with Poisson jumps, we are interested in strong convergence of a novel time-stepping method, called transformed jump-adapted backward Euler method (TJABEM). Under certain hypothesis, the considered model takes values in positive domain $(0,\infty)$. It is shown that the TJABEM can preserve the domain of the underlying problem. Furthermore, for the above model with non-globally Lipschitz drift and diffusion coefficients, the strong convergence rate of order one of the TJABEM is recovered with respect to a $L^p$-error criterion. Finally, numerical experiments are given to illustrate the theoretical results.

Numerical approximation of the invariant distribution for a class of stochastic damped wave equations

We study a class of stochastic semilinear damped wave equations driven by additive Wiener noise. Owing to the damping term, under appropriate conditions on the nonlinearity, the solution admits a unique invariant distribution. We apply semi-discrete and fully-discrete methods in order to approximate this invariant distribution, using a spectral Galerkin method and an exponential Euler integrator for spatial and temporal discretization respectively. We prove that the considered numerical schemes also admit unique invariant distributions, and we prove error estimates between the approximate and exact invariant distributions, with identification of the orders of convergence. To the best of our knowledge this is the first result in the literature concerning numerical approximation of invariant distributions for stochastic damped wave equations.

Weak convergence of the backward Euler method for stochastic Cahn--Hilliard equation with additive noise

We prove a weak rate of convergence of a fully discrete scheme for stochastic Cahn--Hilliard equation with additive noise, where the spectral Galerkin method is used in space and the backward Euler method is used in time. Compared with the Allen--Cahn type stochastic partial differential equation, the error analysis here is much more sophisticated due to the presence of the unbounded operator in front of the nonlinear term. To address such issues, a novel and direct approach has been exploited which does not rely on a Kolmogorov equation but on the integration by parts formula from Malliavin calculus. To the best of our knowledge, the rates of weak convergence are revealed in the stochastic Cahn--Hilliard equation setting for the first time.

Strong convergence of the tamed Euler scheme for scalar SDEs with superlinearly growing and discontinuous drift coefficient

In this paper, we consider scalar stochastic differential equations (SDEs) with a superlinearly growing and piecewise continuous drift coefficient. Existence and uniqueness of strong solutions of such SDEs are obtained. Furthermore, the classical $L_p$-error rate 1/2 for all $p\in [1, +\infty)$ is recovered for the tamed Euler scheme. A numerical example is provided to support our conclusion.

Weak convergence rates for an explicit full-discretization of stochastic Allen-Cahn equation with additive noise

We discretize the stochastic Allen-Cahn equation with additive noise by means of a spectral Galerkin method in space and a tamed version of the exponential Euler method in time. The resulting error bounds are analyzed for the spatio-temporal full discretization in both strong and weak senses. Different from existing works, we develop a new and direct approach for the weak error analysis, which does not rely on the use of the associated Kolmogorov equation or Itô's formula and is therefore non-Markovian in nature. Such an approach thus has a potential to be applied to non-Markovian equations such as stochastic Volterra equations or other types of fractional SPDEs, which suffer from the lack of Kolmogorov equations. It turns out that the obtained weak convergence rates are, in both spatial and temporal direction, essentially twice as high as the strong convergence rates. Also, it is revealed how the weak convergence rates depend on the regularity of the noise. Numerical experiments are finally reported to confirm the theoretical conclusion.

A full-discrete exponential Euler approximation of invariant measure for parabolic stochastic partial differential equations

We discrete the ergodic semilinear stochastic partial differential equations in space dimension $d \leq 3$ with additive noise, spatially by a spectral Galerkin method and temporally by an exponential Euler scheme. It is shown that both the spatial semi-discretization and the spatio-temporal full discretization are ergodic. Further, convergence orders of the numerical invariant measures, depending on the regularity of noise, are recovered based on an easy time-independent weak error analysis without relying on Malliavin calculus. To be precise, the convergence order is $1-ε$ in space and $\frac{1}{2}-ε$ in time for the space-time white noise case and $2-ε$ in space and $1-ε$ in time for the trace class noise case in space dimension $d = 1$, with arbitrarily small $ε>0$. Numerical results are finally reported to confirm these theoretical findings.

Mean-square approximations of Lévy noise driven SDEs with super-linearly growing diffusion and jump coefficients

This paper first establishes a fundamental mean-square convergence theorem for general one-step numerical approximations of Lévy noise driven stochastic differential equations with non-globally Lipschitz coefficients. Then two novel explicit schemes are designed and their convergence rates are exactly identified via the fundamental theorem. Different from existing works, we do not impose a globally Lipschitz condition on the jump coefficient but formulate appropriate assumptions to allow for its super-linear growth. However, we require that the Lévy measure is finite. New arguments are developed to handle essential difficulties in the convergence analysis, caused by the super-linear growth of the jump coefficient and the fact that higher moment bounds of the Poisson increments $ \int_t^{t+h} \int_Z \,\bar{N}(\mbox{d}s,\mbox{d}z), t \geq 0, h >0$ contribute to magnitude not more than $O(h)$. Numerical results are finally reported to confirm the theoretical findings.

Symmetric-adjoint and symplectic-adjoint methods and their applications

Symmetric method and symplectic method are classical notions in the theory of Runge-Kutta methods. They can generate numerical flows that respectively preserve the symmetry and symplecticity of the continuous flows in the phase space. Adjoint method is an important way of constructing a new Runge-Kutta method via the symmetrisation of another Runge-Kutta method. In this paper, we introduce a new notion, called symplectic-adjoint Runge-Kutta method. We prove some interesting properties of the symmetric-adjoint and symplectic-adjoint methods. These properties reveal some intrinsic connections among several classical classes of Runge-Kutta methods. In particular, the newly introduced notion and the corresponding properties enable us to develop a novel and practical approach of constructing high-order explicit Runge-Kutta methods, which is a challenging and longly overlooked topic in the theory of Runge-Kutta methods.

The tamed Milstein method for commutative stochastic differential equations with non-globally Lipschitz continuous coefficients

For stochastic differential equations (SDEs) with a superlinearly growing and globally one-sided Lipschitz continuous drift coefficient, the classical explicit Euler scheme fails to converge strongly to the exact solution. Recently, an explicit strongly convergent numerical scheme, called the tamed Euler method, is proposed in [Hutzenthaler, Jentzen & Kloeden, Ann. Appl. Probab., 22 (2012), pp. 1611-1641.] for such SDEs. Motivated by their work, we here introduce a tamed version of the Milstein scheme for SDEs with commutative noise. The proposed method is also explicit and easily implementable, but achieves higher strong convergence order than the tamed Euler method does. In recovering the strong convergence order one of the new method, new difficulties arise and kind of a bootstrap argument is developed to overcome them. Finally, an illustrative example confirms the computational efficiency of the tamed Milstein method compared to the tamed Euler method.

Higher order strong approximations of semilinear stochastic wave equation with additive space-time white noise

Novel fully discrete schemes are developed to numerically approximate a semilinear stochastic wave equation driven by additive space-time white noise. Spectral Galerkin method is proposed for the spatial discretization, and exponential time integrators involving linear functionals of the noise are introduced for the temporal approximation. The resulting fully discrete schemes are very easy to implement and allow for higher strong convergence rate in time than existing time-stepping schemes such as the Crank-Nicolson-Maruyama scheme and the stochastic trigonometric method. Particularly, it is shown that the new schemes achieve in time an order of $1- ε$ for arbitrarily small $ε>0$, which exceeds the barrier order $\frac{1}{2}$ established by Walsh. Numerical results confirm higher convergence rates and computational efficiency of the new schemes.

Stability of analytical and numerical solutions of nonlinear stochastic delay differential equations

This paper concerns the stability of analytical and numerical solutions of nonlinear stochastic delay differential equations (SDDEs). We derive sufficient conditions for the stability, contractivity and asymptotic contractivity in mean square of the solutions for nonlinear SDDEs. The results provide a unified theoretical treatment for SDDEs with constant delay and variable delay (including bounded and unbounded variable delays). Then the stability, contractivity and asymptotic contractivity in mean square are investigated for the backward Euler method. It is shown that the backward Euler method preserves the properties of the underlying SDDEs. The main results obtained in this work are different from those of Razumikhin-type theorems. Indeed, our results hold without the necessity of constructing of finding an appropriate Lyapunov functional.

A Runge-Kutta type scheme for nonlinear stochastic partial differential equations with multiplicative trace class noise

In this paper a new Runge-Kutta type scheme is introduced for nonlinear stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) with multiplicative trace class noise. The proposed scheme converges with respect to the computational effort with a higher order than the well-known linear implicit Euler scheme. In comparison to the infinite dimensional analog of Milstein type scheme recently proposed in [Jentzen & Röckner (2012); A Milstein scheme for SPDEs, Arxiv preprint arXiv:1001.2751v4], our scheme is easier to implement and needs less computational effort due to avoiding the derivative of the diffusion function. The new scheme can be regarded as an infinite dimensional analog of Runge-Kutta method for finite dimensional stochastic ordinary differential equations (SODEs). Numerical examples are reported to support the theoretical results.

The improved split-step backward Euler method for stochastic differential delay equations

A new, improved split-step backward Euler (SSBE) method is introduced and analyzed for stochastic differential delay equations(SDDEs) with generic variable delay. The method is proved to be convergent in mean-square sense under conditions (Assumption 3.1) that the diffusion coefficient $g(x,y)$ is globally Lipschitz in both $x$ and $y$, but the drift coefficient $f(x,y)$ satisfies one-sided Lipschitz condition in $x$ and globally Lipschitz in $y$. Further, exponential mean-square stability of the proposed method is investigated for SDDEs that have a negative one-sided Lipschitz constant. Our results show that the method has the unconditional stability property in the sense that it can well reproduce stability of underlying system, without any restrictions on stepsize $h$. Numerical experiments and comparisons with existing methods for SDDEs illustrate the computational efficiency of our method.
