Dynamical effects of electromagnetic flux on Chialvo neuron map: nodal and network behaviors

We consider the dynamical effects of electromagnetic flux on the discrete Chialvo neuron. It is shown that the model can exhibit rich dynamical behaviors such as multistability, firing patterns, antimonotonicity, closed invariant curves, various routes to chaos, fingered chaotic attractors. The system enters chaos via period-doubling cascades, reverse period-doubling route, antimonotonicity, via closed invariant curve to chaos. The results were confirmed using the techniques of bifurcation diagrams, Lyapunov exponent diagram, phase portraits, basins of attraction and numerical continuation of bifurcations. Different global bifurcations are also shown to exist via numerical continuation. After understanding a single neuron model, a network of Chialvo neuron is explored. A ring-star network of Chialvo neuron is considered and different dynamical regimes such as synchronous, asynchronous, chimera states are revealed. Different continuous and piecewise continuous wavy patterns were also found during the simulations for negative coupling strengths.

On the analysis of a time varying noise-modulated heterogeneous coupled network of Chialvo neurons under the influence of electromagnetic flux

We perform a numerical study on the application of electromagnetic flux on a heterogeneous network of Chialvo neurons represented by a ring-star topology. Heterogeneities are realized by introducing additive noise modulations on both the central-peripheral and the peripheral-peripheral coupling links in the topology that not only vary in space but also in time. The variation in time is understood by two coupling probabilities, one for the central-peripheral connections and the other for the peripheral-peripheral connections respectively, that updates the network topology with each iteration in time. We have further reported the rich spatiotemporal patterns like two-cluster states, chimera states, traveling waves, coherent, and asynchronized states that arise throughout the network dynamics. We have also investigated the appearance of a special kind of asynchronization behavior called "solitary nodes" that have wide range of applications pertaining to real-world nervous systems. In order to characterize the behavior of the nodes under the influence of these heterogeneities, we have studied two different metrics called the "cross-correlation coefficient" and the "synchronization error". Additionally, to capture the statistical property of the network, for example, how complex the system behaves, we have also studied a measure called "sample entropy". Various two-dimensional color-coded plots are presented in the study to exhibit how these metrics/measures behave with the variation of parameters. Finally, how the nodes synchronize or asynchronize is shown via one-dimensional bifurcation diagrams of the last instance of the main dynamical variable, i.e., the state variable associated with the membrane potential, against different network parameters.

Dynamical Model of Mild Atherosclerosis: Applied Mathematical Aspects

Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease occurs due to plaque accumulation in the inner artery wall. In atherosclerotic plaque formation monocytes and macrophages play a significant role in controlling the disease dynamics. In the present article, the entire biochemical process of atherosclerotic plaque formation is presented in terms of an autonomous system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations involving concentrations of oxidized low-density lipoprotein (LDL), monocytes, macrophages, and foam cells as the key dependent variables. To observe the capacity of monocytes and macrophages the model has been reduced to a two-dimensional temporal model using quasi steady state approximation theory. Linear stability analysis of the two-dimensional ordinary differential equations (ODEs) model has revealed the stability of the equilibrium points in the system. We have considered both one- and two- parameter bifurcation analysis with respect to parameters associated to the rate at which macrophages phagocytose oxidised LDL and the rate at which LDL enters into the intima. The bifurcation diagrams reveal the oscillating nature of the curves representing concentration of monocytes and macrophages with respect to significant model parameters. We are able to find the threshold values at which the plaque accumulation accelerates in an uncontrollable way. Further to observe the impact of diffusion, a spatiotemporal model has been developed. Numerical investigation of the partial differential equations (PDEs) model reveals the existence of travelling wave in the system which ensures the fact that the development of atherosclerotic plaque formation follows reaction-diffusion wave.

Complex dynamics of a heterogeneous network of Hindmarsh-Rose neurons

In this contribution, we have considered the collective behavior of the two as well as the network of heterogeneous coupled Hindmarsh Rose (HR) neurons. The heterogeneous models were made of a memristive 2D (HR) and the traditional 3D HR neurons. Investigating a model of two coupled neurons through an electrical synapse reveals dissipative properties. When control parameters are varied, the coupled neuron model exhibits rich dynamics, such as the periodic, quasi-periodic, and chaotic dynamics involving either bursting or spiking oscillations. For weak electrical coupling strength, non-synchronized motion is observed. But in the case of higher coupling strength, synchronized cluster states are observed. Besides, ring-star networks of up to 100 under three different heterogeneous topologies are being investigated, and various spatiotemporal patterns are explored. It is found that the spatiotemporal patterns depend on the topology of the heterogeneous network considered. A new clustered chimera state is revealed qualitatively via the recurrence plot. The cluster states are indicated in the ring and star configurations of the heterogeneous network. Single and double-well chimera states have been revealed in the ring and ring-star structures. Finally, an equivalent electronic circuit for the two coupled heterogeneous is designed and investigated in the PSIM simulation environment. A perfect match is observed between the results obtained from the designed analog circuit and the mathematical model of the two coupled neurons, which supports the fact that our obtained results are not related to an artifact.

Numerical bifurcation analysis of improved denatured Morris-Lecar neuron model

It is well-known that the electrical activities of neurons are induced by a wide variety of external factors. This work considers the effect of electromagnetic induction on improved denatured Morris-Lecar neuron model. The dependence of dynamical behaviour of the original denatured Morris-Lecar model on parameters is addressed through numerical bifurcation analysis. This allows us to explore the changes in dynamics of the model qualitatively as parameters are varied. Then we investigate the effects of external periodic current and electromagnetic flux on the dynamical properties of the improved denatured Morris-Lecar neuron model. Different types of dynamical behaviour, ranging from regular periodic spiking to complex bursting, are found when the multiple parameters are varied simultaneously. The improved model could be applied to research where simple models are required for physiological and pathophysiological responses in neurons.

Influence of Sodium Inward Current on Dynamical Behaviour of Modified Morris-Lecar Model

This paper presents a modified Morris-Lecar model by incorporating the sodium inward current. The dynamical behaviour of the model in response to key parameters is investigated. The model exhibits various excitability properties as the values of parameters are varied. We have examined the effects of changes in maximum ion conductances and external current on the dynamics of the membrane potential. A detailed numerical bifurcation analysis is conducted. The bifurcation structures obtained in this study are not present in existing bifurcation studies of original Morris-Lecar model. The results in this study provides the interpretation of electrical activity in excitable cells and a platform for further study.

Unfolding globally resonant homoclinic tangencies

Global resonance is a mechanism by which a homoclinic tangency of a smooth map can have infinitely many asymptotically stable, single-round periodic solutions. To understand the bifurcation structure one would expect to see near such a tangency, in this paper we study one-parameter perturbations of typical globally resonant homoclinic tangencies. We assume the tangencies are formed by the stable and unstable manifolds of saddle fixed points of two-dimensional maps. We show the perturbations display two infinite sequences of bifurcations, one saddle-node the other period-doubling, between which single-round periodic solutions are asymptotically stable. Generically these scale like $|λ|^{2 k}$, as $k \to \infty$, where $-1 < λ< 1$ is the stable eigenvalue associated with the fixed point. If the perturbation is taken tangent to the surface of codimension-one homoclinic tangencies, they instead scale like $\frac{|λ|^k}{k}$. We also show slower scaling laws are possible if the perturbation admits further degeneracies.

Discrete hybrid Izhikevich neuron model: nodal and network behaviours considering electromagnetic flux coupling

We analyse the dynamics of the improved discretised version of the well known Izhikevich neuronmodel under the action of external electromagnetic field. It is found that the three-dimensional IZHmap shows rich dynamics. With the variation of the electromagnetic field, period-doubling routeto chaos in a repeating fashion is observed from the bifurcation diagram. Even the forward andbackward continuation bifurcation diagram which do not completely overlap suggests that there is multistability in the system. The phenomenon of bistability (coexistence of periodic and chaotic attractors) is observed. The presence of periodic and chaotic attractor is aided by the maximal Lyapunov exponent diagram. The Lyapunov phase diagram of electromagnetic field and synapses current shows a large parameter region of chaotic and periodic behaviors with the presence of unbounded regions as well. The IZH map shows a plethora of spiking and bursting patterns such as mixed-mode patterns, tonic spiking, phasic spiking, steady spikes, regular spikes, spike bursting, periodic bursting, phasic bursting, chaotic firing, etc with the variation of electromagnetic coupling strength and the synapses current. We also investigate the presence of chimera states in a ring-star, ring, star network of IZH map neurons. Chimera states are found in the case of ring-star and ring network while synchronised clusters were found in the case of star network and are aided by the spatiotemporal plots, space-time plot, recurrence plots. The rich dynamics shown by the discretised IZH map makes it a promising research model to study about neurodynamics.

Synchronization of wave structures in a heterogeneous multiplex network of 2D vdP lattices with attractive and repulsive intra-layer coupling

We explore numerically the synchronization effects in a heterogeneous two-layer network of two-dimensional (2D) lattices of van der Pol oscillators. The inter-layer coupling of the multiplex network has an attractive character. One layer of 2D lattices is characterized by attractive coupling of oscillators and demonstrates a spiral wave regime for both the local and nonlocal interaction. The oscillators in the second layer are coupled through active elements and the interaction between them has the repulsive character. We show that the lattice with the repulsive type of coupling demonstrates complex spatiotemporal cluster structures, which can be called as labyrinth-like structures. We show for the first time that this multiplex network with fundamentally different types of intra-layer coupling demonstrates the mutual synchronization and a competition between two types of structures. Our numerical study indicates that the synchronization threshold and the type of spatiotemporal patterns in both the layers strongly depend on the ratio of the intra-layer coupling strength of the two lattices. We also analyze the impact of intra-layer coupling ranges on the synchronization effects.
