Routing Unmanned Vehicles in GPS-Denied Environments

Most of the routing algorithms for unmanned vehicles, that arise in data gathering and monitoring applications in the literature, rely on the Global Positioning System (GPS) information for localization. However, disruption of GPS signals either intentionally or unintentionally could potentially render these algorithms not applicable. In this article, we present a novel method to address this difficulty by combining methods from cooperative localization and routing. In particular, the article formulates a fundamental combinatorial optimization problem to plan routes for an unmanned vehicle in a GPS-restricted environment while enabling localization for the vehicle. We also develop algorithms to compute optimal paths for the vehicle using the proposed formulation. Extensive simulation results are also presented to corroborate the effectiveness and performance of the proposed formulation and algorithms.

An Exact Algorithm for a Fuel-Constrained Autonomous Vehicle Path Planning Problem

This paper addresses a fuel-constrained, autonomous vehicle path planning problem in the presence of multiple refueling stations. We are given a set of targets, a set of refueling stations, and a depot where $m$ vehicles are stationed. The vehicles are allowed to refuel at any refueling station, and the objective of the problem is to determine a route for each vehicle starting and terminating at the depot, such that each target is visited by at least one vehicle, the vehicles never run out of fuel while traversing their routes, and the total travel cost of all the routes is a minimum. We present four new mixed-integer linear programming formulations for the problem. These formulations are compared both analytically and empirically, and a branch-and-cut algorithm is developed to compute an optimal solution. Extensive computational results on a large class of test instances that corroborate the effectiveness of the algorithm are also presented.

An Approximation Algorithm for a Shortest Dubins Path Problem

The problem of finding the shortest path for a vehicle visiting a given sequence of target points subject to the motion constraints of the vehicle is an important problem that arises in several monitoring and surveillance applications involving unmanned aerial vehicles. There is currently no algorithm that can find an optimal solution to this problem. Therefore, heuristics that can find approximate solutions with guarantees on the quality of the solutions are useful. The best approximation algorithm currently available for the case when the distance between any two adjacent target points in the sequence is at least equal to twice the minimum radius of the vehicle has a guarantee of 3.04. This article provides a new approximation algorithm which improves this guarantee to 2.04. The developed algorithm is also implemented for hundreds of typical instances involving at most 30 points to corroborate the performance of the proposed approach.

On Tightly Bounding the Dubins Traveling Salesman's Optimum

The Dubins Traveling Salesman Problem (DTSP) has generated significant interest over the last decade due to its occurrence in several civil and military surveillance applications. Currently, there is no algorithm that can find an optimal solution to the problem. In addition, relaxing the motion constraints and solving the resulting Euclidean TSP (ETSP) provides the only lower bound available for the problem. However, in many problem instances, the lower bound computed by solving the ETSP is far below the cost of the feasible solutions obtained by some well-known algorithms for the DTSP. This article addresses this fundamental issue and presents the first systematic procedure for developing tight lower bounds for the DTSP.

Shortest Paths of Bounded Curvature for the Dubins Interval Problem

The Dubins interval problem aims to find the shortest path of bounded curvature between two targets such that the departure angle from the first target and the arrival angle at the second target are constrained to two respective intervals. We propose a new and a simple algorithm to this problem based on the minimum principle of Pontryagin.

Formulations and algorithms for the multiple depot, fuel-constrained, multiple vehicle routing problem

We consider a multiple depot, multiple vehicle routing problem with fuel constraints. We are given a set of targets, a set of depots and a set of homogeneous vehicles, one for each depot. The depots are also allowed to act as refueling stations. The vehicles are allowed to refuel at any depot, and our objective is to determine a route for each vehicle with a minimum total cost such that each target is visited at least once by some vehicle, and the vehicles never run out fuel as it traverses its route. We refer this problem as Multiple Depot, Fuel-Constrained, Multiple Vehicle Routing Problem (FCMVRP). This paper presents four new mixed integer linear programming formulations to compute an optimal solution for the problem. Extensive computational results for a large set of instances are also presented.

Generalized multiple depot traveling salesmen problem - polyhedral study and exact algorithm

The generalized multiple depot traveling salesmen problem (GMDTSP) is a variant of the multiple depot traveling salesmen problem (MDTSP), where each salesman starts at a distinct depot, the targets are partitioned into clusters and at least one target in each cluster is visited by some salesman. The GMDTSP is an NP-hard problem as it generalizes the MDTSP and has practical applications in design of ring networks, vehicle routing, flexible manufacturing scheduling and postal routing. We present an integer programming formulation for the GMDTSP and valid inequalities to strengthen the linear programming relaxation. Furthermore, we present a polyhedral analysis of the convex hull of feasible solutions to the GMDTSP and derive facet-defining inequalities that strengthen the linear programming relaxation of the GMDTSP. All these results are then used to develop a branch-and-cut algorithm to obtain optimal solutions to the problem. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated through extensive computational experiments on several benchmark instances.

A Primal Dual Algorithm for a Heterogeneous Traveling Salesman Problem

Surveillance applications require a collection of heterogeneous vehicles to visit a set of targets. In this article, we consider a fundamental routing problem that arises in these applications involving two vehicles. Specifically, we consider a routing problem where there are two heterogeneous vehicles that start from distinct initial locations, and a set of targets. The objective is to find a tour for each vehicle such that each of the targets is visited at least once by a vehicle and the sum of the distances traveled by the vehicles is a minimum. We present a primal-dual algorithm for a variant of this routing problem that provides an approximation ratio of 2.

Algorithms for Routing an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle in the presence of Refueling Depots

We consider a single Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) routing problem where there are multiple depots and the vehicle is allowed to refuel at any depot. The objective of the problem is to find a path for the UAV such that each target is visited at least once by the vehicle, the fuel constraint is never violated along the path for the UAV, and the total fuel required by the UAV is a minimum. We develop an approximation algorithm for the problem, and propose fast construction and improvement heuristics to solve the same. Computational results show that solutions whose costs are on an average within 1.4% of the optimum can be obtained relatively fast for the problem involving 5 depots and 25 targets.
