Probing scrambling and operator size distributions using random mixed states and local measurements

The dynamical spreading of quantum information through a many-body system, typically called scrambling, is a complex process that has proven to be essential to describe many properties of out-of-equilibrium quantum systems. Scrambling can, in principle, be fully characterized via the use of out-of-time-ordered correlation functions, which are notoriously hard to access experimentally. In this work, we put forward an alternative toolbox of measurement protocols to experimentally probe scrambling by accessing properties of the operator size probability distribution, which tracks the size of the support of observables in a many-body system over time. Our measurement protocols require the preparation of separable mixed states together with local operations and measurements, and combine the tools of randomized operations, a modern development of near-term quantum algorithms, with the use of mixed states, a standard tool in NMR experiments. We demonstrate how to efficiently probe the probability-generating function of the operator distribution and discuss the challenges associated with obtaining the moments of the operator distribution. We further show that manipulating the initial state of the protocol allows us to directly obtain the individual elements of the distribution for small system sizes.

Multispin Clifford codes for angular momentum errors in spin systems

The physical symmetries of a system play a central role in quantum error correction. In this work we encode a qubit in a collection of systems with angular-momentum symmetry (spins), extending the tools developed in Phys. Rev. Lett. 127, 010504 for single large spins. By considering large spins present in atomic systems and focusing on their collective symmetric subspace, we develop new codes with octahedral symmetry capable of correcting errors up to second order in angular-momentum operators. These errors include the most physically relevant noise sources such as microwave control errors and optical pumping. We additionally explore new qubit codes that exhibit distance scaling commensurate with the surface code while permitting transversal single-qubit Clifford operations.

Scrambling and quantum chaos indicators from long-time properties of operator distributions

Scrambling is a key concept in the analysis of nonequilibrium properties of quantum many-body systems. Most studies focus on its characterization via out-of-time-ordered correlation functions (OTOCs), particularly through the early-time decay of the OTOC. However, scrambling is a complex process which involves operator spreading and operator entanglement, and a full characterization requires one to access more refined information on the operator dynamics at several timescales. In this work we analyze operator scrambling by expanding the target operator in a complete basis and studying the structure of the expansion coefficients treated as a coarse-grained probability distribution in the space of operators. We study different features of this distribution, such as its mean, variance, and participation ratio, for the Ising model with longitudinal and transverse fields, kicked collective spin models, and random circuit models. We show that the long-time properties of the operator distribution display common features across these cases, and discuss how these properties can be used as a proxy for the onset of quantum chaos. Finally, we discuss the connection with OTOCs and analyze the cost of probing the operator distribution experimentally using these correlation functions.

Neutral atom entanglement using adiabatic Rydberg dressing

We revisit the implementation of a two-qubit entangling gate, the Mølmer-Sørensen gate, using the adiabatic Rydberg dressing paradigm for neutral atoms as studied in [Phys. Rev. A 101, 030301 (R) (2020)]. We study the implementation of rapid adiabatic passage using a two-photon transition, which does not require the use of an ultra-violet laser, and can be implemented using only amplitude modulation of one field with all laser frequencies fixed. We find that entangling gate fidelities, comparable to the one-photon excitation, are achievable with the two-photon excitation. Moreover, we address how the adiabatic dressing protocol can be used to implement entangling gates outside the regime of a perfect Rydberg blockade. We show that using adiabatic dressing we can achieve scaling of gate fidelity set by the fundamental limits to entanglement generated by the Rydberg interactions while simultaneously retaining a limited population in the doubly-excited Rydberg state. This allows for fast high fidelity gates for atoms separated beyond the blockade radius.

Flavor isospin waves in one-dimensional axisymmetric neutrino gases

Flavor oscillations can occur on very short spatial and temporal scales in the dense neutrino media in a core-collapse supernova (CCSN) or binary neutron star merger (BNSM) event. Although the dispersion relations (DRs) of the fast neutrino oscillations can be obtained by linearizing the equations of motion (EoM) before the emergence of any significant flavor conversion, one largely depends on numerical calculations to understand this interesting phenomenon in the nonlinear regime. In this work we demonstrate that there exist nontrivial solutions to the flavor EoM that govern the fast oscillations in one-dimensional axisymmetric neutrino gases. These solutions represent a coherent flavor isospin wave similar to the magnetic spin wave in a lattice of magnetic dipoles. We also compute the DRs of such waves in some example cases which are closely related to the DRs of the fast neutrino oscillations obtained in the linear regime. This result sheds new light on the long-term behavior of fast neutrino oscillations which can have various implications for the CCSN and BNSM events.

Quantum Optimal Control of Nuclear Spin Qudecimals in $^{87}\text{Sr}$

We study the ability to implement unitary maps on states of the $I=9/2$ nuclear spin in \textsuperscript{87}Sr, a $d=10$ dimensional (qudecimal) Hilbert space, using quantum optimal control. Through a combination of nuclear spin-resonance and a tensor AC-Stark shift, by solely modulating the phase of a radio-frequency magnetic field, the system is quantum controllable. Alkaline earth atoms, such as \textsuperscript{87}Sr, have a very favorable figure-of-merit for such control due to narrow intercombination lines and the large hyperfine splitting in the excited states. We numerically study the quantum speed-limit, optimal parameters, and the fidelity of arbitrary state preparation and full SU(10) maps, including the presence of decoherence due to optical pumping induced by the light-shifting laser. We also study the use of robust control to mitigate some dephasing due to inhomogeneities in the light shift. We find that with an rf-Rabi frequency of $Ω_\text{rf}$ and 0.5\% inhomogeneity in the the light shift we can prepare an arbitrary Haar-random state in a time $T={4.5}π/Ω_\text{rf}$ with average fidelity $\langle \mathcal{F}_ψ\rangle =0.9992$, and an arbitrary Haar-random SU(10) map in a time $T=24π/Ω_\text{rf}$ with average fidelity $\langle \mathcal{F}_U \rangle = 0.9923$.

Quantum walks with quantum chaotic coins: Of the Loschmidt echo, classical limit and thermalization

Coined discrete-time quantum walks are studied using simple deterministic dynamical systems as coins whose classical limit can range from being integrable to chaotic. It is shown that a Loschmidt echo like fidelity plays a central role and when the coin is chaotic this is approximately the characteristic function of a classical random walker. Thus the classical binomial distribution arises as a limit of the quantum walk and the walker exhibits diffusive growth before eventually becoming ballistic. The coin-walker entanglement growth is shown to be logarithmic in time as in the case of many-body localization and coupled kicked rotors, and saturates to a value that depends on the relative coin and walker space dimensions. In a coin dominated scenario, the chaos can thermalize the quantum walk to typical random states such that the entanglement saturates at the Haar averaged Page value, unlike in a walker dominated case when atypical states seem to be produced.

Out-of-time-ordered correlators and quantum walks

Out-of time-ordered correlators (OTOC) have recently attracted significant attention from the physics of many-body systems, to quantum black-holes, with an exponential growth of the OTOC indicating quantum chaos. Here we consider OTOC in the context of coined discrete quantum walks, a very well studied model of quantization of classical random walks with applications to quantum algorithms. Three separate cases of operators, variously localized in the coin and walker spaces, are discussed in this context and it is found that the approximated behavior of the OTOCs is well described by simple algebraic functions in all these three cases with different time scale of growth. The quadratic increase of OTOC signals the absence of quantum chaos in these simplest forms of quantum walks.

Quantum walk on a toral phase space

A quantum walk on a toral phase space involving translations in position and its conjugate momentum is studied in the simple context of a coined walker in discrete time. The resultant walk, with a family of coins parametrized by an angle is such that its spectrum is exactly solvable with eigenangles for odd parity lattices being equally spaced, a feature that is remarkably independent of the coin. The eigenvectors are naturally specified in terms the $q-$Pochhammer symbol, but can also be written in terms of elementary functions, and their entanglement can be analytically found. While the phase space walker shares many features in common with the well-studied case of a coined walker in discrete time and space, such as ballistic growth of the walker position, it also presents novel features such as exact periodicity, and formation of cat-states in phase-space. Participation ratio (PR) a measure of delocalization in walker space is studied in the context of both kinds of quantum walks; while the classical PR increases as $\sqrt{t}$ there is a time interval during which the quantum walks display a power-law growth $\sim t^{0.825}$. Studying the evolution of coherent states in phase space under the walk enables us to identify an Ehrenfest time after which the coin-walker entanglement saturates.
