Aerodynamic Forces on a Wing Surfing in a Two-dimensional Vortex Wake

Inspired by the wake-surfing nature of animals, this study aims to understand the aerodynamic force variation on a wing surfing in an unsteady 2-D wake. Wind tunnel experiments were conducted using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and force measurements with a fixed wing immersed in the wake of a pitching airfoil. The comparison between force and PIV measurements shows that the lift response of the surfing wing is aligned with the impingement of flow structures, and that the dependence of the cycle-averaged lift fluctuations on the upstream flapping kinematics can be scaled as a function of the reduced amplitude and reduced frequency of the flapping motion. Good collapse of the data is found, and deviations from scaling are explained in terms of the wake characteristics. The phase-resolved lift fluctuations on the vortical wake encountering can be effectively predicted using classic unsteady aerodynamics based on measured unsteady local flow conditions (instantaneous angle of attack and speed). The theoretical predictions compare well with direct force sensor measurements.

Upstroke wing clapping in bats and bat-inspired robots improves both lift generation and power economy

Wing articulation is critical for efficient flight of bird- and bat-sized animals. Inspired by the flight of $\textit{Cynopterus brachyotis}$, the lesser short-nosed fruit bat, we built a two-degree-of-freedom flapping wing platform with variable wing folding capability. In late upstroke, the wings "clap" and produce an air jet that significantly increases lift production, with a positive peak matched to that produced in downstroke. Though ventral clapping has been observed in avian flight, potential aerodynamic benefit of this behavior has yet to be rigorously assessed. We used multiple approaches -- quasi-steady modeling, direct force/power measurement, and PIV experiments in a wind tunnel -- to understand critical aspects of lift/power variation in relation to wing folding magnitude over Strouhal numbers between $St = 0.2 - 0.4$. While lift increases monotonically with folding amplitude in that range, power economy (ratio of lift/power) is more nuanced. At $St = 0.2 - 0.3$, it increase with wing folding amplitude monotonically. At $St = 0.3 - 0.4$, it features two maxima -- one at medium folding amplitude ($\sim 30^\circ$), and the other at maximum folding. These findings illuminate two strategies available to flapping wing animals and robots -- symmetry-breaking lift augmentation and appendage-based jet propulsion.

Social Network Datasets on Reddit Financial Discussion

Stock markets are impacted by a large variety of factors including news and discussions among investors about investment opportunities. With the emergence of social media, new opportunities for having financial discussions arose. The market frenzy surrounding GameStop (GME) on the Reddit subreddit Wallstreetbets, caused financial discussion forums to receive widespread attention and it was established that Wallstreetbets played a leading role in the stock market movements of GME. Here, we present a new data set for exploring the effect of social media discussion forums on the stock market. The dataset consists of posts published on various Reddit subreddits concerning the popular meme stocks GameStop (GME), American Multi-Cinema Entertainment Holdings (AMC), and BlackBerry (BB). We document the data collection and processing steps and show that the posts and comments about these meme stocks are related to their market movements.
