EDGE: Experience-Distillation for Guided Exploration in Agentic Reinforcement Learning

Reinforcement learning with outcome-based objectives such as GRPO enables LLM-based agents to solve complex, long-horizon tasks, yet the reusable exploration patterns embedded in interaction trajectories are largely discarded after a single policy update. Existing experience-augmented approaches retrieve historical guidance at inference time, but they apply experiences without accounting for the policy's evolving capability and create persistent dependencies on external retrieval. We propose EDGE (Experience-Distillation for Guided Exploration), a framework that treats retrieved experiences as temporary training-time scaffolds and progressively internalizes their benefits into the parametric policy. Concretely, EDGE partitions each rollout group into experience-conditioned and experience-free trajectories to estimate and admit only positive marginal gains without extra sampling, then distills the induced behavior into the base policy via a reverse-KL objective on its own empirical support. A co-evolutionary experience bank further synthesizes guidance from emerging failure modes and prunes obsolete entries as the policy evolves. Across embodied, web, and search-based QA tasks, EDGE improves over strong RL baselines by up to 12.5 points and remains effective without inference-time scaffolds or a proprietary reflector. The code is available at https://github.com/xvolcano02/EDGE.

TeachBench: A Syllabus-Grounded Framework for Evaluating Teaching Ability in Large Language Models

Large language models (LLMs) show promise as teaching assistants, yet their teaching capability remains insufficiently evaluated. Existing benchmarks mainly focus on problem-solving or problem-level guidance, leaving knowledge-centered teaching underexplored. We propose a syllabus-grounded evaluation framework that measures LLM teaching capability via student performance improvement after multi-turn instruction. By restricting teacher agents to structured knowledge points and example problems, the framework avoids information leakage and enables reuse of existing benchmarks. We instantiate the framework on Gaokao data across multiple subjects. Experiments reveal substantial variation in teaching effectiveness across models and domains: some models perform well in mathematics, while teaching remains challenging in physics and chemistry. We also find that incorporating example problems does not necessarily improve teaching, as models often shift toward example-specific error correction. Overall, our results highlight teaching ability as a distinct and measurable dimension of LLM behavior.

EAPO: Enhancing Policy Optimization with On-Demand Expert Assistance

Large language models (LLMs) have recently advanced in reasoning when optimized with reinforcement learning (RL) under verifiable rewards. Existing methods primarily rely on outcome-based supervision to strengthen internal LLM reasoning, often leading to inefficient exploration and sparse rewards. To mitigate this issue, we propose Expert-Assisted Policy Optimization (EAPO), a novel RL framework that enhances exploration by incorporating multi-turn interactions with external experts during training. Unlike prior methods, where policies reason in isolation, EAPO incentivizes the policy to adaptively determine when and how to consult experts, yielding richer reward signals and more reliable reasoning trajectories. External assistance ultimately internalizes expert knowledge into the policy model, amplifying the model's inherent reasoning capabilities. During evaluation, the policy model has been well-optimized to solve questions independently, producing improved reasoning paths and more accurate solutions. On AIME 2024/2025 and AIMO 2025, EAPO consistently outperforms expert-assisted, expert-distilled, and RL baselines, averaging a 5-point gain over self-exploration RL, and also generalizes to non-math benchmarks, including HumanEval, HLE, GPQA, MMLU, EvalPlus, HotpotQA, and SimpleQA.
