Quantum Dynamics of a Microwave Driven Superconducting Phase Qubit Coupled to a Two-Level System

We present an analytical and comprehensive description of the quantum dynamics of a microwave resonantly driven superconducting phase qubit coupled to a microscopic two-level system (TLS), covering a wide range of the external microwave field strength. Our model predicts several interesting phenomena in such an ac driven four-level bipartite system including anomalous Rabi oscillations, high-contrast beatings of Rabi oscillations, and extraordinary two-photon transitions. Our experimental results in a coupled qubit-TLS system agree quantitatively very well with the predictions of the theoretical model.

Landau-Zener-Stuckelberg interferometry in multilevel superconducting flux qubit

Landau-Zener-Stuckelberg interferometry has been extensively investigated in quantum two-level systems, with particular interests on artificial system such as superconducting flux qubits. With increasing the driving field amplitude, more energy levels will be involved into the quantum evolution, which results in population inversion and many interesting interference patterns. These interference patterns can be used to obtain the parameters characterizing the system and probe dephasing mechanisms of the qubit. Most recently, experiments have been extended to the regime with higher-frequency and larger-amplitude driving field, in which the interference pattern exhibited more complicated characteristics. In this article, we give a universal description of the characteristics observed in both low-frequency and high-frequency regimes. Besides explaining the already observed experimental results, our theoretical model predicted many interesting phenomenon, which can be demonstrated by future experiments.

Population Inversion Induced by Landau-Zener Transition in a Strongly Driven rf-SQUID

Microwave resonances between discrete macroscopically distinct quantum states with single photon and multiphoton absorption are observed in a strongly driven radio frequency superconducting quantum interference device flux qubit. The amplitude of the resonant peaks and dips are modulated by the power of the applied microwave irradiation and a population inversion is generated at low flux bias. These results, which can be addressed with Landau-Zener transition, are useful to develop an alternative means to initialize and manipulate the flux qubit, as well as to do a controllable population inversion used in a micromaser.

Experimental Demonstration of a Robust and Scalable Flux Qubit

A novel rf-SQUID flux qubit that is robust against fabrication variations in Josephson junction critical currents and device inductance has been implemented. Measurements of the persistent current and of the tunneling energy between the two lowest lying states, both in the coherent and incoherent regime, are presented. These experimental results are shown to be in agreement with predictions of a quantum mechanical Hamiltonian whose parameters were independently calibrated, thus justifying the identification of this device as a flux qubit. In addition, measurements of the flux and critical current noise spectral densities are presented that indicate that these devices with Nb wiring are comparable to the best Al wiring rf-SQUIDs reported in the literature thusfar, with a $1/f$ flux noise spectral density at $1 $Hz of $1.3^{+0.7}_{-0.5} μΦ_0/\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$. An explicit formula for converting the observed flux noise spectral density into a free induction decay time for a flux qubit biased to its optimal point and operated in the energy eigenbasis is presented.

A Compound Josephson Junction Coupler for Flux Qubits With Minimal Crosstalk

An improved tunable coupling element for building networks of coupled rf-SQUID flux qubits has been experimentally demonstrated. This new form of coupler, based upon the compound Josephson junction rf-SQUID, provides a sign and magnitude tunable mutual inductance between qubits with minimal nonlinear crosstalk from the coupler tuning parameter into the qubits. Quantitative agreement is shown between an effective one-dimensional model of the coupler's potential and measurements of the coupler persistent current and susceptibility.

Quantum Jumps between Macroscopic Quantum States of a Superconducting Qubit Coupled to a Microscopic Two-Level System

We report the observation of quantum jumps between macroscopic quantum states in a superconducting phase qubit coupled to the two-level systems in the Josephson tunnel junction, and all key features of quantum jumps are confirmed in the experiments. Moreover, quantum jumps can be used to calibrate such two-level systems, which are believed to be one of the main decoherence sources in Josephson devices.

Decoherence of a driven multilevel quantum system interacting with a multi-bath reservoir

A general theory is presented for the treatment of decoherence of a multilevel quantum system (with many degrees of freedom) interacting with multi-bath reservoir and driven by ac fields. In this approach, the system is described by a reduced density operator and the multi-bath reservoir is characterized by a number of spectral densities. The reduced density operator is governed by the master equation in which the effect of ac driving fields and the leakage to non-computational states are included. The theory is applied to the study of decoherence of a two-dimensional (2D) SQUID flux qubit coupled to control and readout circuits. The predicted results are in very good agreement with available experimental results in the absence of driving fields and with the analytic results of a dissipative two-level system in the presence of weak driving fields. The relaxation and decoherence times versus the parameters and temperature of the control and readout circuits are also explored in details to facilitate the optimization of the 2D SQUID qubit.

Relaxation and decoherence in a resonantly driven qubit

Relaxation and decoherence of a qubit coupled to environment and driven by a resonant ac field are investigated by analytically solving Bloch equation of the qubit. It is found that the decoherence of a driven qubit can be decomposed into intrinsic and field-dependent ones. The intrinsic decoherence time equals to the decoherence time of the qubit in free decay while the field-dependent decoherence time is identical with the relaxation time of the qubit in driven oscillation. Analytical expressions of the relaxation and decoherence times are derived and applied to study a microwave-driven SQUID flux qubit. The results are in excellent agreement with those obtained by numerically solving the master equation. The relations between the relaxation and decoherence times of a qubit in free decay and driven oscillation can be used to extract the decoherence and thus dephasing times of the qubit by measuring its population evolution in free decay and resonantly driven oscillation.

Realization of an n-qubit controlled-U gate with superconducting quantum interference devices or atoms in cavity QED

We propose an approach to realize an $n$-qubit controlled-$U$ gate with superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) in cavity QED. In this approach, the two lowest levels of a SQUID represent the two logical states of a qubit while a higher-energy intermediate level serves the gate manipulation. Our method operates essentially by creating a single photon through one of the control SQUIDs and then performing an arbitrary unitrary transformation on the target SQUID with the assistance of the cavity photon. In addition, we show that the method can be applied to implement an $n $% -qubit controlled-$U$ gate with atomic qubits in cavity QED.

Efficient many-party controlled teleportation of multi-qubit quantum information via entanglement

We present a way to teleport multi-qubit quantum information from a sender to a distant receiver via the control of many agents in a network. We show that the original state of each qubit can be restored by the receiver as long as all the agents collaborate. However, even if one agent does not cooperate, the receiver can not fully recover the original state of each qubit. The method operates essentially through entangling quantum information during teleportation, in such a way that the required auxiliary qubit resources, local operation, and classical communication are considerably reduced for the present purpose.

A scheme for the teleportation of multiqubit quantum information via the control of many agents in a network

We present a new scheme for teleporting multiqubit quantum information from a sender to a distant receiver via the control of many agents in a network. We show that the receiver can successfully restore the original state of each qubit as long as all the agents cooperate. However, it is remarkable that for certain type of teleported states, the receiver can not gain any amplitude information even if one agent does not collaborate. In addition, our analysis shows that for general input states of each message qubit, the average fidelity for the output states, when even one agent does not take action, is the same as that for the previous proposals.

Measurement of Dissipation of a Three-Level rf SQUID Qubit

The dissipation-induced relaxation (T_1) time of a macroscopic quantum system - a \{lambda}-type three-level rf SQUID flux qubit weakly coupled to control and readout circuitry (CRC) - is investigated via time-domain measurement. The measured interwell relaxation time of the qubit's first excited state, T_1=3.45+/-0.06 \{mu}s, corresponds to an effective damping resistance of the flux qubit R=1.6+/-0.1 M\{omega} which is much lower than the intrinsic quasiparticle resistance of the Josephson tunnel junction. An analysis of the system shows that although the CRC is very weakly coupled to the qubit it is the primary source of damping. This type of damping can be significantly reduced by the use of more sophisticated circuit design to allow coherent manipulation of qubit states.

A unified approach to realize universal quantum gates in a coupled two-qubit system with fixed always-on coupling

We demonstrate that in a coupled two-qubit system any single-qubit gate can be decomposed into two conditional two-qubit gates and that any conditional two-qubit gate can be implemented by a manipulation analogous to that used for a controlled two-qubit gate. Based on this we present a unified approach to implement universal single-qubit and two-qubit gates in a coupled two-qubit system with fixed always-on coupling. This approach requires neither supplementary circuit or additional physical qubits to control the coupling nor extra hardware to adjust the energy level structure. The feasibility of this approach is demonstrated by numerical simulation of single-qubit gates and creation of two-qubit Bell states in rf-driven inductively coupled two SQUID flux qubits with realistic device parameters and constant always-on coupling.

Rapid optimization of working parameters of microwave-driven multi-level qubits for minimal gate leakage

We propose an effective method to optimize the working parameters (WPs) of microwave-driven quantum logical gates implemented with multi-level physical qubits. We show that by treating transitions between each pair of levels independently, intrinsic gate errors due primarily to population leakage to undesired states can be estimated accurately from spectroscopic properties of the qubits and minimized by choosing appropriate WPs. The validity and efficiency of the approach are demonstrated by applying it to optimize the WPs of two coupled rf SQUID flux qubits for controlled-NOT (CNOT) operation. The result of this independent transition approximation (ITA) is in good agreement with that of dynamic method (DM). Furthermore, the ratio of the speed of ITA to that of DM scales exponentially as 2^n when the number of qubits n increases.

A n-qubit controlled phase gate with superconducting quantum interference devices coupled to a resonator

We present a way to realize a $n$-qubit controlled phase gate with superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) by coupling them to a superconducting resonator. In this proposal, the two logical states of a qubit are represented by the two lowest levels of a SQUID. An intermediate level of each SQUID is utilized to facilitate coherent control and manipulation of quantum states of the qubits. It is interesting to note that a $n$-qubit controlled phase gate can be achieved with $n$ SQUIDs by successively applying a $π/2$ Jaynes-Cummings pulse to each of the $n-1$ control SQUIDs before and after a $π$ Jaynes-Cummings pulse on the target SQUID.

Extracting an arbitrary relative phase from a multiqubit two-component entangled state

We show that an arbitrary relative phase can be extracted from a multiqubit two-component (MTC) entangled state by local Hadamard transformations and measurements along a single basis only. In addition, how to distinguish a MTC entangled state with an arbitrary entanglement degree and relative phase from a class of multiqubit mixed states is discussed.

Efficient scheme for quantum entanglement, quantum information transfer, and quantum gate with three-level SQUID qubits in cavity QED

A novel scheme is proposed for realizing quantum entanglement, quantum information transfer and a set of universal quantum gates with superconducting-quantum-interference-device (SQUID) qubits in cavity QED. In the scheme, the two logical states of a qubit are the two lowest levels of the SQUID. An intermediate level of the SQUID is utilized to facilitate coherent control and manipulation of quantum states of the qubits. The method presented here does not create finite intermediate-level population or cavity-photon population during the operations. Thus, decoherence due to spontaneous decay from the intermediate levels is minimized and the requirement on the quality factor of the cavity is greatly loosened.

An arbitrary-operation gate with a SQUID qubit

A novel approach is proposed for realizing an arbitrary-operation gate with a SQUID qubit via pulsed-microwave manipulation. In this approach, the two logical states of the qubit are represented by the two lowest levels of the SQUID and an intermediate level is utilized for the gate manipulation. The method does not involve population in the intermediate level or tunneling between the two logical qubit states during the gate operation. Morever, we show that the gate can be much faster than the conventional two-level gate. In addition, to take the advantage of geometric quantum computing, we further show how the method can be extended to implement an arbitrary quantum logic operation in a SQUID qubit via geometric manipulation.
